I think it's safe to assume this dude is long gone and not coming back. But may be some one has some ideas how we can get a new moderator. So yahoo will out right refuse to assign a new moderator? I suppose overall the list goes on working pretty well anyway. Only down side is we cannot remove files from files section (if I understand correctly).

Correct, we are flying with noone at the helm. The only way is if the
mod/owner comes back. Other than that. We have to sit here and take the
abuse. Yahoo should have better rules in place.

We could always start a new forum and keep this one as an archive.

Marc,

I'm all for making a new group and using this one for a file and
info archive. Perhaps we can call it the Yamaha DX TX Synthesizer
group. That would make it show up in most any newbie search.

If we made several reputable members moderators and owners no
single person could leave us in the predicament we are in now...

A very considerant individual recently turned over the Alesis QS
Synthesizer to me (he sold his QS) and the first thing I did was find
and appoint a co-owner in the group in case something happens to me.

Let us know if you want to proceed along this avenue, Narfman

that forum sold his equipment. I'm all for being a co owner here as well.

Damn, that makes things far harder, as it seems the domain went away. I
wonder if there's some way to get around that. I'll check into it.

Guys and Gals,

Looking thru the provided info I've started looking around.
The .NL domain is Holland (NetherLands) so my home-turf ;-)

Hence I've started delving into Dutch search-engines and the like (legal ones and, well..).
I *might* repeat *might* have found someone who fits the descriptions 'Joel', 'J.Kolling' AND 'Mango'.

I've sent this person a nice email which came right back since the account was over quota :-/
Alas, at least it exists !

Next thing to do is trying to get a phone-number and go that route.
Walking on the edge of legitimacy again I'll hopefully get somewhere.

I'll keep you posted, not all is lost yet !

Dang I knew someone would help us!!! I unloaded on Yahoo today too!
Not that it will do any good... I noticed Joel became somewhat
unavailable after ordering some 727's? whatever they are. Good luck
and maybe you can save us from the "create another DX group
syndrome"...

Thanks, Fran

So can someone clarify what is going on here. My understanding is that
perhaps we have maxed out our quota in storage and we're looking for
more space and perhaps extras. I understand the old moderator has just
stepped away and thus "there's no one in control". Are we looking to
start a DX-TX group or what was the original problem here?

Sorry to chime in so late. Thank you for doing all this leg work as
this list has been so helpful over the years. \

You guys are the best.

I believe the desire is to take control of THIS group, so as not to have
to make another and get everyone onto it.
Once we have control of this group, we can delete files that are no
longer needed or never belonged, to make room for other files of more
importance.

I think it's safe to assume this dude is long gone and not coming back. But
may be some one has some ideas how we can get a new moderator. So yahoo will
out right refuse to assign a new moderator? I suppose overall the list goes
on working pretty well anyway. Only down side is we cannot remove files from
files section (if I understand correctly).

We lost the list owner. Their account is bouncing, and as such, no one is in
charge of the group. When this happens, Yahoo sets the group to open from
moderation, and anyone can join. Usually spammers follow.

Also, only owners or moderators can remove files from the file section that
anyone put there -- otherwise, the person uploading the file is the only one
who can remove it. So, to clear some room in the files section, we need a
list owner.

So can someone clarify what is going on here. My understanding is that
perhaps we have maxed out our quota in storage and we're looking for more
space and perhaps extras. I understand the old moderator has just stepped
away and thus "there's no one in control". Are we looking to start a DX-TX
group or what was the original problem here?

Sorry to chime in so late. Thank you for doing all this leg work as this

I think there is actually a good argument to keep this group going. It is seen as the main fm synth group on yahoo and to the best of my knowledge THE MAIN fm group for the entire internet. Starting a new group is no guarantee that many people will join it. Think of a person who does a search for fm groups on yahoo. When they see YamahaDX it will show a large membership so they will assume it is the main one and join it. There is virtually no spam (i think because of new anti-spam measures introduction by yahoo), and is a well functioning, long established group.

The only down side is that we can't amend the files section. What I propose is that we start up new a new group only to hold files, and we have several moderators attached to that group to ensure we don't loose control of it. Now there is already a DXfiles group but when that gets full we can just set up DXfiles2, DXfiles3 groups, etc.

What does everyone think???

You'd be surprised at the interest level in older synths. The Kurzweil
1000-1200 series mailing list has managed to get rom images for all the
upgrades so that the group members with chip burners can create upgrade
chips for the instruments at cost of chips for group members, as well as
doing explorations on to exactly what sample file is on what chip, developed
several user repairable strategies to keep the machines running, and have
even talked about sharing songs made exclusively with these machines.

Older synthesizer based mailing lists tend to be the more active ones I see,
as people have actually taken the time to explore what the machines can do
and learn them on a far deeper level than you'll see with 99 percent of the
Fantom and Motif or Triton users.

In the day of all in one be all end all workstations, a lot of character
gets lost because they try to be everything to everyone. That's why I have a
big rack full of synths that each have a defined role in my rig so that I
know where to go to find just the sound I need. It's actually very
refreshing to have these resources at hand and to not have to dig through
the googlemegaomnisynth's sixteen thousand programs to find one bright lead
sound.

Hey RG,

I applaud you for stepping up and doing some footwork to locate this
individual, but I think all of that is overkill. It's real easy for us to
just ramp up a new forum with people in place that can keep it going if one
were to bow out. Who knows why the original owner left... he could be
deceased, in jail, any number of things. maybe he does not want to be
bothered with email which maybe why his email box is full.

Of course, if you want to keep on movin' then by all means do so, but I just
think it's not worth using up your personal time out of your life to search
for this guy. I am a member of a couple forums where the owner has vanished.
they still keep moving albeit with some spam every now and then... but such
is life.

When you track this person down, and get them to reactivate their account
briefly, have them make a half dozen of us owners so that we won't have this
happen again.

Guys and Gals,

Looking thru the provided info I've started looking around.
The .NL domain is Holland (NetherLands) so my home-turf ;-)

Hence I've started delving into Dutch search-engines and the like (legal
ones and, well..).
I *might* repeat *might* have found someone who fits the descriptions
'Joel', 'J.Kolling' AND 'Mango'.

I've sent this person a nice email which came right back since the account
was over quota :-/ Alas, at least it exists !

Next thing to do is trying to get a phone-number and go that route.
Walking on the edge of legitimacy again I'll hopefully get somewhere.

I'll keep you posted, not all is lost yet !

Damn, that makes things far harder, as it seems the domain went away.
I wonder if there's some way to get around that. I'll check into it.

I think it's safe to assume this dude is long gone and not coming
back. But may be some one has some ideas how we can get a new
moderator. So yahoo will out right refuse to assign a new moderator? I
suppose overall the list goes on working pretty well anyway. Only down
side is we cannot remove files from files section (if I understand
correctly).

We can also post in an FAQ any alternative storage sites.

Again, I will be happy to post any/all related information, for FREE for life (mine, not yours). My site is already paid for, and I'm happy to help fellow musicians. I have nearly unlimited storage and bandwidth.

[Storage]
My synthsamples can hold up to 51GB of data by now,
possibly will salvage another 20 gigs when my friends
will clean up their mess... ehm... accounts.
The bandwidth is 56Mbit/s max, divided by up to
8Mbit/s (1Mbyte) per client session (average speeds
450kbyte/s).

The purpose is to store synth demonstrations and sysex
files, though nobody said that no other files can be
stored (if somebody did say that, I'm not denying that
:) ).
Feel free to post your stuff there, some of existing
dirs are purposedly read-only as that's my own crap,
and I don't want it mixed :) (as someones work would
be mistakenly treated as my own).

I finally managed to get someone to assist me with my TX-802 yesterday. (I'm
blind, so it can be problematic dealing with these things, and the manual
from Yamaha is an un-OCR'd PDF)

I found a reference to the Performance Program Change Channel, but am unable
to find out where to set that value. Since I want to use the thing on two
MIDI channels all the time, I'd prefer to set this channel to off.
Otherwise, I'll have to copy my two channel performance to all the program
slots.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If I understand your question, I think you want the System Setup menu,
then option number 3, which is Performance Select, and then Performance
Select Channel which should be the first option. You can set this to Off.

Please let me know if this works for you.

If I understand your question, I think you want the System Setup menu, then
option number 3, which is Performance Select, and then Performance Select
Channel which should be the first option. You can set this to Off.

Please let me know if this works for you.

I finally managed to get someone to assist me with my TX-802
yesterday. (I'm blind, so it can be problematic dealing with these
things, and the manual from Yamaha is an un-OCR'd PDF)
I found a reference to the Performance Program Change Channel, but am
unable to find out where to set that value. Since I want to use the
thing on two MIDI channels all the time, I'd prefer to set this channel to
off.
Post by Nicole Massey
Otherwise, I'll have to copy my two channel performance to all the
program slots.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, I'll give it a try when Iget a sighted
person back here again.
Uhm, sorry for ignorance, I realised now you meant
"blinded" quite literally.

I apologise, "utility" is the rightmost top
key on those above cartridge slot.

Yeah, I'm almost totally blind. Makes gear a challenge sometimes.

Let me be more clear, so that I'm getting the result I want.

I want to turn off program change for the performances, while leaving the
voices to receive program changes. In essence, I want to give this box the
same MIDI response to channels and program changes as a DX7IIFD.

Dang, I made a mistake, I looked again and found out
that it's not "utility" but "system setup", the second
key from right in the top row- sorry about that.

And yes, that should do the trick- I have it "off" and
I can change single patches on MIDI channels, within
one performance.

While digging through another box of stuff I found my old ROM cartridge from
the DX7IIFD. It contains all the factory programs and performance setups on
the machine.

What's it worth these days? I'm thinking of selling it, but I'm not sure of
the value of it.

Hi Nicole, your rom cartridge is a memory card? can i store information from a dx7 mark I ?...if is possible i can buy it.

The other side if your cartridge is only read memory, is limited because in the web you can download a lot of very interesting sounds via midi.

Nope, it's just ROM, so it just has the factory patches. Very useful if,
say, your machine keeps losing them or you've got a dying battery.

I used to have a DX7IIFD. Filthy lowlife slimeballs came into my
home and took it away, along with a lot of other things in my life, back on
Jan1, 2004. I replaced it with a TX802.

However, I have several floppy disks for the DX7IIFD drive that contained a
lot of patches. A lot. Like, possibly about 14,000. I'd like to get them off
these floppies and into something, but I don't know of anything that will
read a DX7IIFD format. Anyone know of anything that can access this format?
Since I'm without the synth, I can't just pop them into the drive.

I'd prefer not to have to go buy one again just to get these files off this
format and into something more universal.

There is a small freeware program for PC called Omniflop, which will
read some non-PC type floopy disks - especially synth and sampler
disks. It has a list of various synth floppys that have been tried
and work on it. The DX isn't on the list, but that may be because it
hasn't been tried. Try it out, it's free:

Well, the easy part is that the DX7IIFD uses a DOS disk format. I have easy
access to the files, I just need some way to open them in something that can
read them and get valid data out of them.

If you had access to the IIFD would you be able to offload them form the
keyboard onto something else? Midi dump perhaps?

Reason I ask this is that I have the IIFD and if I can help you get these
files off loaded then I would be more than happy to do so. Contact me here
or off list and we can try. J

The problem with this is that I purchased these sounds from a sound library,
and as such, I don't feel right just letting them into someone else's hands.
Some I'm not too worried about, like the original patch libraries for the
IIFD or DX5. But others are copyrighted material, and I can't justify just
sending them to someone else.

fm7 for me
I have thousands of dx7 patches I found all over the net
I have a IID here but no floppy
I have been told, the same file you put on that floppy to feed into the synth
is the same, I can not 100% verify this, having no floppy in the synth to check

I can however, see all the settings to each patch and so on in FM7
There are other softsynths out there, some free, that also read the same format
and put up a gui .. I can not say if that would work either with you you have to deal with.

btw, doing the work from home today to cut cost down on gas, so I am switching

Okay. I'm less concerned about the control of the factory presets, as those
are widely available and should be in every machine all the time anyway. I
can send one of those banks out to someone willing to check if their
particular program will read the format.

Sad thing is, if I had the studio machine fully up and running (still trying
to get things back alive, and though the synth rig is mostly working now,
other things are not quite functional as of yet) then I could check it
myself, as I have FM7 and all the files are both on my server and on the
studio machine.

Rick,

First I can vouch for Marc's integrity but of course someone would then
have to vouch for mine....

Secondly if you have the SoundSations library I'm sure John (the owner)
would be glad to give you sysex files for your disk files. He did for
me before I bought the FD. He still lists these patches on Ebay.

Tonight when I get home I'll look at all the DX7IIFD files I have on
disk and see if I can translate them to sysex without using my FD. Many
times the sysex commands are stripped away and the raw data is all
that's needed on the disk. However I have more experience with the
Peavey DPM gear which is quite simple to work with. The DOS format will
help a lot much better than the D-20 I just restored. The D-20 disks
are single sided 3.5" and some proprietary Roland format that can't be
read in a PC or Mac.

The next problem will be the TX802 is not 100% compatible with the
DX7II series. You can load voices but the performances will not work.

proprietary Roland format that can't be read in a PC or Mac.

The next problem will be the TX802 is not 100% compatible with the DX7II
series. You can load voices but the performances will not work.

Narf,

Thank you for the kind words! And I vouch for you! ;-)

Rick,

First I can vouch for Marc's integrity but of course someone would then
have to vouch for mine....

I looked at the FD disk files I have using a Win98SE PC. The last 8192
bytes in every file were the 2 banks of 32 patches (4096 bytes each)
for the DX7IIFD bank that was saved. The performances are the 166 bytes
ahead of the banks. The header data probably has midi and controller
setup info for the synth.

Somewhere I found a utility that will convert these raw 4096 byte files
back to DX7 sysex banks. I think it was Dave Benson's site. Each patch
is 128 bytes with the patch name ascii data for the last 10 bytes.
Midquest will open these raw banks. I'm not sure about other editors
like JSynthLib or DX Manager.

There is a checksum that's needed at the end of the bank sysex so the
converter may be needed to easily calculate the proper value. However
if I remember correctly this older Yamaha gear will accept the patch
and then tell you checksum error. Contrary to a Roland which spits it.

Let me know if this helps, Fran

I have a dead RAM cartridge for my TX-802, so I need another one. It just
needs to hold the 64 programs for the upper cartridge bank, so any one that
will do the job is fine. Anyone got one for sale at a reasonable price?

Hi Nicole,

What is dead about it, maybe we can fix it. I presume it is similar to a RAM
cart for a DX7.

Cheers

She says it's for a TX802. It's the same cartridge used for a DX7mk2.

It's one of the dual bank ones with the switch. It's not doing anything.
Might be the battery or something similar.
