S5E12 The Pandorica Opens

Great opening and great acting by Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Alex
Kingston.

I always had the feeling that the Pandorica might be a trap for Doctor.
Seems like we're going to get a massive reset in part 2 and hopefully the
plastic Daleks will disappear for good as part of it. It also looks like the
Doctor isn't the person that River Song killed since she started the episode
already in prison and she ended it saying goodbye my love, unless she's
referring to the TARDIS.

Good atmospheric build up all the way through to the ending and the stuff
going on with Amy and "Rory" and the revealing what he really is, so why did
they need to have every other alien race in there as well? It would have
worked perfectly well as an Auton story with the "surprise" of them being
allied with the Cybermen, sparing us the 3 plastic Daleks who distinctly
look out of place and out of fashion. They're much too large, friendly
looking and wobbly and you feel cheated by only seeing a few seconds of the
other races which should have been introduced slowly one by one during the
progression of part 2 instead.

If the alliance was formed to stop the Doctor from piloting the TARDIS and
causing it to blow up, why didn't they just take the TARDIS and put it in
the Pandorica. That is what I was hoping would turn up inside, suspended in
the process of exploding, with the alliance trying to use that to their
advantage, instead of the big anticlimax with having the whole universe blow
up and reset button being pressed in part 2.

Or it means either that she killed the Doctor at an earlier point in
her timeline, or that she was in jail for something else at this
point. Pretty lax security if they didn't confiscate her lipstick,
though.

I agree that the Autons were the interesting reveal of the piece, and
a pure Auton story could have worked. With the plot we were given,
though, it would be hard to explain why those two groups specifically
wanted to save the universe rather than everyone. The big reason for
it to be "everyone who hates the Doctor" (plus, for no terribly clear
reason, the Judoon, who have no reason to hate the Doctor - and it was
a waste having them in the final scene when they had no lines since
their speech pattern is what the kids love about them) seemed to be
just to bang home that the Doctor was the Big Bad they were trying to
lock up, but we'd already got that bit by this stage in proceedings.
The Doctor's lines about the fairy tale of the 'nameless' destroyer
were a much cleverer way to do that.

They're much too large, friendly

Why was it that only the "Big Three" (Daleks, Cybermen, Sontarans)
recurring races got any dialogue at all (Autons excepted, of course)?

The Judoon are basically Police - there is surely no greater crime
than destroying the entire [whatever it was in the episode]?
Personally I was much more puzzled by the Draconians...

there is the Time element of it - the Nestene or Cybermen have never
been able to travel in time (yes I know about Attack of the Cybermen
but they didn't know how to operate the Time Ship IIRC) The Daleks
OOTH have had a lot of experience in Time Travel.

Spearhead from Space seemed to suggest the Nestene was a rather more
powerful and advanced intelligence than it seemed to be in Rose - and
since its planets were destroyed in the Time War it's possible the
Nestene were sufficiently advanced to have time travel technology.

It did have an 'old series Cyberman' vibe about it, I felt. It was a
nice sequence - shame it had nothing at all to do with the actual
plot.

Well, when her script was basically "Yes, Doctor, No, Doctor" she
didn't have much opportunity. What you find annoying I find amusing
about her - sadly once she's teamed with the Doctor she seems to fall
into the role of personality-less lackey with occasional sniping that
Amy usually fills. Given the quality of most of the supporting cast
this year, and the fact that I like Smith's performances for the most
part, I'm normally happy with Moffatt's clear intent to turn Dr Who
into the Matt Smith Show, but it's a shame when it overshadows
characters like River.

I disagree. In Spearhead the Nestene didn't even have FTL ships, but
travelled through space in slow-moving plastic meteorites.

Or the Daleks and Time Lords wanted to conquer Nestene planets for a

Just the opposite. This Cyberman was far too powerful to be one of the
useless wimps from the old-series. Compare it to the one that lost its
head in Attack.

(OTOH it was killed by a sword, so maybe it might be wimpy enough to be a
classic Cyberman.)

maybe even the logically-minded Cybermen) saying "Well, we should just
lock up the TARDIS." and the Daleks saying "WE-ARE-COOL-WITH-THIS-PLAN-

I was wondering who the Uber-mind for the Pandorica is. Often when all
the bad guys get together it is because some "smaller player" acts like
they are a go between claiming to have "other significant parties on
board" even when there is nobody at the start. Someone is controlling
the TARDIS (and I don't think it's another case of pollen in the
filter). Could it be that the Daleks, Cybermen and the rest are patsies
for someone else - possibly the Autons. What about that 'blank pink
wall keeping River Song in the TARDIS.

OR since the Judoon are there - maybe it's because he ""stole the
TARDIS"" from the Shadow Proclamation? The red eyed ladies did not
appear to be either the people to cross or none to pleased when he ran
off without them.

Auton Rory seems to know too much for someone wiped from history. It
implies he is still alive but shoved back in time. Are victims of the
crack not just wiped from the present, but rewritten back in the past
(bit like the Angels do) and Rory is an Auton captive?

Actually, was the Cold Blood crack a real one? Note that the Doctor was
able to reach into it, but anyone else getting near gets pulled in...
suspicious or what? He can't be immune to the crack or the Angels would
not have suggested he fell in.

Have the cracks been incorrectly perceived, as mistaken perceptions have
been a theme along with remembering.

Have I spouted enough twaddle...

... I think SO.

And goodnight! ;-)

I imagine that the foundation of this alliance may have involved some
of the races, like the Attraxi, the Judoon and the Draconians (And
maybe even the logically-minded Cybermen) saying "Well, we should just
lock up the TARDIS." and the Daleks saying "WE-ARE-COOL-WITH-THIS-PLAN-
BUT-ONLY-IF-WE-IMPRISON-THE-DOCTOR-INSTEAD", and then everyone sort of
grudgingly nodding and conceding the point.
Shouldn't the Daleks have been demanding the Doctor's death?
Why?
Haven't they always wanted the Doctor dead?

The Pandorica was meant as a tool of execution.
But Amy's body was preserved for 1894 years, and she was revived without a hitch by young Amy's DNA. Why wasn't she executed?

My plan for Daleks: At end of the episode, simply aim weapons at Doctor & disintegrate!
Group decision.
Who says the Daleks must abide by the decisions of non-Daleks?
They do not want t odoom themselves.

How is it that we were able to see all the stars blow up at once, and them disappear?

How is it that we were able to see all the stars blow up at once, and
them disappear?
They all came apart molecularly.
But how could we SEE the LIGHT coming from the destroyed stars and
arriving at Earth ALL AT THE SAME TIME? That is what I am asking, not
HOW the stars got destroyed!
Light accelerator?
But according to the theory of relativity, light only goes at one speed!
You mean maxed!
Light can't go faster than a shade under 300,000 KM/sec. It would take years for the light from an exploding star to reach Earth.

Not with anything the human race has NOW. And I don't see exploding stars being able to break the speed limit.

SF writers evoke such things as warp drives (which shrink the space one must pass through), hyperspace, and wormholes.

But how could we SEE the LIGHT coming from the destroyed stars and
arriving at Earth ALL AT THE SAME TIME? That is what I am asking, not
HOW the stars got destroyed!
Light accelerator?
Make light go faster then light?

How fast is the spped of light?

Good atmospheric build up all the way through to the ending and the stuff
going on with Amy and "Rory" and the revealing what he really is, so why did
they need to have every other alien race in there as well? It would have
worked perfectly well as an Auton story with the "surprise" of them being
allied with the Cybermen, sparing us the 3 plastic Daleks who distinctly
look out of place and out of fashion. They're much too large, friendly
looking and wobbly and you feel cheated by only seeing a few seconds of the
other races which should have been introduced slowly one by one during the
progression of part 2 instead.
With the universe blown up, how would alliance members be introduced?

Yep. The Doctor was not able to save Amy. That is why he kept dreaming about her leaving and coming back, and then later about about an 'impossible girl' who dies numerous times, whom he could not save in the end except in a made up story he told in a diner that did not exist.

... in a diner that didn't exist .... because it's all just a dream ...
that we are still in!!
Which means there is still hope for Agamemnon and the idiot, 'cause the
next Doctor Who may not be a woman!!
BBC ad says DW is a lady!
... but, maybe, Tim, you just dreamed you saw that BBC ad.

When we all wake up, things might be as Agamemnon and the idiot want!

How would they have survived death of universe at end of Pandorica?
It was all a dream. In fact, everything since then has a been a dream.
The real Doctor is still trapped in the Pandorica.
The Doctor in the Tardis doesnt know.
So that (the dream state we are in) would explain why we see Amy getting
out of the Pandorica when we all know it was The Doctor that was locked
in there!
