It was shocking to hear the news that the Herald has
finally succumbed to blackmail of Mr. Manohar Parrikar
and his RSS cohorts to force their editor Mr. Rajan
Narayan to resign. The Herald was the only paper to
bring out the truth on all fronts, and was known for
its reputation for not succumbing to political
pressures. It appears that the pressure was too much
for the CM as all his black lies and communistic
designs were getting exposed. He has taken the final
step to blackmail the owners of Herald to force the
editor to resign.
?
In doing so Mr. Manohar Parrikar has finally dropped
his mask. Everybody should read the message on the
wall. All citizens Hindus Christian and Muslim should
take firm steps individually to throw out this fascist
regime. If we do not do this now, the communal rot
will sink in deeper and Goa our lovely land of
Communal Harmony will be doomed.
?
Let us look at the brighter side of things. Mr. Rajan
Narayan is starting his own newspaper, which will have
no skeletons in the closet. Dedicated people have
volunteered already and others can now join up to
fight the sickness of communalism and other citizen
oriented issues and bring out the truths. The Supreme
Court has indicted the Modi Government in Gujarat IN
THE Best Bakery issue and has openly stated that it
had no faith in the Gujarat Government. This gives a
clear picture of what to expect of Goa with Mr. Modi?s
good friend Mr. Manohar Parrikar. In removing Mr.
Rajan Narayan he has created a third force which the
silenced I repeat silenced citizens of this lovely
state can approach.
?
We hope he and his RSS cohorts will not make him
disappear. Only time will tell.

Mr. Rajan Narayan has opened a new site

further information. Here is an extract of his first
bulletin.

R A T I O N A L E
1. After 20 years with the English edition of the
?Herald? which I started and built up to its present
stature as the no. 1 newspaper in the state of Goa, I
have decided that the time has come for me to start my
own Independent Newspaper.
2. I have been compelled to take this decision because
the present management structure of the ? Herald ? is
no longer conducive to practice and uphold the highest
standards of professionalism and to offer justice to
meet the aspirations and expectations of the residents
of Goa.
?
3. I have decided to start a Broadsheet 16-page weekly
modelled on the one-time highly successful ?Sunday
Observer? in Mumbai. I have deliberately and
consciously opted to start a weekly as I believe that
daily newspapers cannot any longer compete with the
electronic media in terms of pure news . as pointed
out by the Union Minister for Information Technology
and veteran journalist Arun Shourie recently,
newspaper have to re-invent themselves and focus more
on analysis and background rather than hard news. I
believe a weekly offers more scope for in-depth
analysis as one is not bogged down in the exigencies
of running a daily newspaper.
4. The proposed weekly will be Konkan-centric and in
keeping with my historical position, will proactively
and aggressively work to preserve and promote Goa?s
historical tradition of communal harmony and fusion
and the larger ethnic and linguistic entity which
constitutes the Konkani speaking diaspora in the
country and abroad. It will also as I have always done
throughout my 35 years long journalistic career and my
20 years stint at the ?Herald? , put the public
interest above all sectarian, political and even
commercial imperatives and compulsions.
5. Besides the widely read and appreciated weekly
column ?Stray Thoughts? the new weekly will on a
continuous basis provide in-depth analysis on
political, social and economical developments in Goa
and its neighbouring states . Of special interest and
focus will be combating any tendencies towards
communalizing Goan society and vital issues concerning
the ecology and environment of Goa, subjects which
fail to get highlighted in the present media because
of commercial and vested interests.
6. Besides in-depth coverage and analysis by the
weekly?s staff which will consist of the best
reporting talent in the state, it will also have
number of columns by experts in relevant fields. Some
of the noted names who have expressed keenness in
being associated with the weekly are Arvind Bhatikar
(former chairman of the Mormagoa Port Trust) , Norma
Alvares (environmentalist) , Thomazin Cardozo (former
speaker and noted cultural activist), Dr. Sudhir
Kakkar (internationally known socialogist and
psychoanalyast), Ervell Menezes (film critic), Devika
Sequeira (senior journalist) and many others.
7. Every issue would have one or more in-depth
investigative reports on a matter of public concern
and of a topical nature, besides several human
interest stories, since I firmly believe that
magazines and newspapers should become more
people-centric.
8. Every 16-page issue will have a four-page section
in colour which will provide continually update
information for the benefit of tourists on where to
eat, what to see, what facilities exist , what hazards
they may face, events including ethnic an cultural
events that might interest them ? indeed, a complete
regularly updated and comprehensive guide for domestic
and foreign tourist.
9. The Independent Goan Observer will be politically
neutral not in a passive way but will be equally
critical of all political parties and formations
10. The Independent Goan Observer is envisaged as a
media organization which will
be participated and owned by the readers themselves.

It isn't clear if Rajan Narayan was forced to resign
or he resigned because his column, Stray Thoughts, was
stopped by the management.
Is Herald No. 1 paper in the state as Rajan claims? I
always felt that Navhind Times was ahead of Herald in
circulation. If at all Herald is leading, I would be
keen to know since what year.
Are papers in Goa audited by an independent agency or
rely on print runs?
Narayan himself may be guilt of playing politics. Now
that he is a victim of it, I am not sure how many will
rally to his cause.
Why did the Herald management buckle under pressure?
No govt. ads or for some other reasons. I remember
even the Bandodkar govt was not releasing ads to
Uzvadd under Evagrio Jorge. Not sure if Jorge resigned
under pressure or if he was forced out.
Newspapers often come under government pressure,
including here in Canada. When the National Post was
taken over by the CanWest Group, which is supporter of
the Liberals, its editor, Ken Whyte, a right-winger,
faced a dilemma. Ultimately, he was forced out.
The National Post was started by Conrad Black, who
owns The Telegraph in England, and other papers. He is
a Tory. The paper lost lot of money and Black had
little option but to sell.
I hope Narayan succeeds in his new venture. There has
been weeklies in Goa before and most of the went
under. I am not sure if there's one now.
If the government excercises undue power over the
newspapers, it's a bad omen for journalism in the
state. How to fight such intrusion and interference is
a problem for management.
Unfortunately, journalists get sandwiched in between.
Most of them have loyaltiies to the profession. Only a
few are there for reasons other than journalism.
As an editor, the temptation to be wooed by government
officials through their largesse is great. If one
falls for such temptation and makes personal gain,
then the objective of journalism suffers.
How many before Narayan have been subjected to such
pressure and, ultimately, firing should be detailed by
the journalists union. An independent study would also
be welcomed into such incidences.

Fred,
Good evening. Late last night I read your reply where
you wrote:

Could you pelase elaborate on the above. In particular
could you please define what you meant by "the current
dispensation"? Are you speaking about those that
occupy a place in the poltical sphere, other elements
in society, members of the elite class in Goan
society? Who exactly in your opinion is silencing the
media from reporting what is exactly happening in and
around Goa? I'd prefer not to interpret what you've
written. Rather I shall let you delve into the matter
as much as possible to give us readers a view of the
pressures and contraints faced as a journalist
reporting in Goa.

Oh, one last thing. I didn't get a chance to post my
praise earlier in the month. Hell, now's as good as
any. Simply put: I just wanted to offer you (and the
GOANET staff) my thanks and gratitude for your time
and effort in creating this forum. I'm sure all will
agree, it is very much appreciated.

In his posting, Fred says: "A number of journalists have been systematically
sidelined, and find it very difficult to get published." To emphasise this,
he says a few lines below: "There are many other journalists who have been
sidelined, or silenced over the years."

This is indeed terrible, particularly the aspect where Fred says that while
the present regime may be more repressive, the 'crime' has been going on for
some time. Since Fred is in the heart of things, maybe he can name
journalists, other than the brave Rajan, who have been silenced. I call
Rajan brave because he has come out openly and said he is going to do
something about the predicament he finds himself. We on the Goanet need to
support and the others who I hope Fred will identify to help us help them.

Words of Ranjan speaks for the truth. Manohar Parrikar
in his haste to dominate the free press to broadcast
his continous lies and stiffle the voice of the people
is fully exposed, He announces grand plans of power
stations, flyovers etc. etc. and when it comes to
solve problems it is well known his answer "give me 15
days or 5 days etc etc. People should realise that
none of these 15 days or 5 days have come to pass and
he is just using Gobbels theory that if you lie to
people continously then people tend to believe what is
said due to confusion. This theory may work for
sometime but Mr. Parrikar should learn that people are
not fools all the time.

Rajan people are looking to you to bring out the truth
as no paper is worth its mettle today in Goa as they
are a part of the saffron lying machine.

Awaiting your first edition is the people of Goa.

Viva Rajan

Quote

I do not know for sure weather it was Manohar
Parrikar
who was directly responsible for recent unpleasant
events and the
humiliation I was subjected to . But I do know that
the last remaining
bastion of the free press in Goa has succumbed to
pressures from the
Chief
Minister Manohar Parrikar.

Pressures on the press? Systematic sidelining of journalists? "Blocking out
of news from the Goa press"?
Sacking newspaper editors? Is this going on in "democratic" Goa in 2003?
I thought muzzling the press was a feature of dictatorships. What kind of
democracy has room for this subversive development? Isn't a free press
essential to a democratic set up?

Where are all those "freedom fighters", ever so ready and happy to denounce
the evils of the colonial regime of more than 40 years ago? The fight is
over for them? Have they been silenced too, with their "freedom fighter
pensions", college quotas and other privileges? Or perhaps having a free
press was not part of what they "fought" for? And the Goan "intelligentsia"
in Goa - nobody saying anything on this?

R A T I O N A L E
1. After 20 years with the English edition of the
?Herald? which I started and built up to its present
stature as the no. 1 newspaper in the state of Goa,
I
have decided that the time has come for me to start
my
own Independent Newspaper.
2. I have been compelled to take this decision
because
the present management structure of the ? Herald ?
is
no longer conducive to practice and uphold the
highest
standards of professionalism and to offer justice to
meet the aspirations and expectations of the
residents
of Goa.
?
3. I have decided to start a Broadsheet 16-page
weekly
modelled on the one-time highly successful ?Sunday
Observer? in Mumbai. I have deliberately and
consciously opted to start a weekly as I believe
that
daily newspapers cannot any longer compete with the
electronic media in terms of pure news . as pointed
out by the Union Minister for Information Technology
and veteran journalist Arun Shourie recently,
newspaper have to re-invent themselves and focus
more
on analysis and background rather than hard news. I
believe a weekly offers more scope for in-depth
analysis as one is not bogged down in the exigencies
of running a daily newspaper.
4. The proposed weekly will be Konkan-centric and in
keeping with my historical position, will
proactively
and aggressively work to preserve and promote Goa?s
historical tradition of communal harmony and fusion
and the larger ethnic and linguistic entity which
constitutes the Konkani speaking diaspora in the
country and abroad. It will also as I have always
done
throughout my 35 years long journalistic career and
my
20 years stint at the ?Herald? , put the public
interest above all sectarian, political and even
commercial imperatives and compulsions.
5. Besides the widely read and appreciated weekly
column ?Stray Thoughts? the new weekly will on a
continuous basis provide in-depth analysis on
political, social and economical developments in Goa
and its neighbouring states . Of special interest
and
focus will be combating any tendencies towards
communalizing Goan society and vital issues
concerning
the ecology and environment of Goa, subjects which
fail to get highlighted in the present media because
of commercial and vested interests.
Alvares (environmentalist) , Thomazin Cardozo
(former
speaker and noted cultural activist), Dr. Sudhir
Kakkar (internationally known socialogist and
psychoanalyast), Ervell Menezes (film critic),
Devika
Sequeira (senior journalist) and many others.
7. Every issue would have one or more in-depth
investigative reports on a matter of public concern
and of a topical nature, besides several human
interest stories, since I firmly believe that
magazines and newspapers should become more
people-centric.
8. Every 16-page issue will have a four-page section
in colour which will provide continually update
information for the benefit of tourists on where to
eat, what to see, what facilities exist , what
hazards
they may face, events including ethnic an cultural
events that might interest them ? indeed, a complete
regularly updated and comprehensive guide for
domestic
and foreign tourist.
9. The Independent Goan Observer will be politically
neutral not in a passive way but will be equally
critical of all political parties and formations
10. The Independent Goan Observer is envisaged as a
media organization which will
be participated and owned by the readers themselves.

R A T I O N A L E
1. After 20 years with the English edition of the
?Herald? which I started and built up to its present
stature as the no. 1 newspaper in the state of Goa,
I
have decided that the time has come for me to start
my
own Independent Newspaper.
2. I have been compelled to take this decision
because
the present management structure of the ? Herald ?
is
no longer conducive to practice and uphold the
highest
standards of professionalism and to offer justice to
meet the aspirations and expectations of the
residents
of Goa.
?
3. I have decided to start a Broadsheet 16-page
weekly
modelled on the one-time highly successful ?Sunday
Observer? in Mumbai. I have deliberately and
consciously opted to start a weekly as I believe
that
daily newspapers cannot any longer compete with the
electronic media in terms of pure news . as pointed
out by the Union Minister for Information Technology
and veteran journalist Arun Shourie recently,
newspaper have to re-invent themselves and focus
more
on analysis and background rather than hard news. I
believe a weekly offers more scope for in-depth
analysis as one is not bogged down in the exigencies
of running a daily newspaper.
4. The proposed weekly will be Konkan-centric and in
keeping with my historical position, will
proactively
and aggressively work to preserve and promote Goa?s
historical tradition of communal harmony and fusion
and the larger ethnic and linguistic entity which
constitutes the Konkani speaking diaspora in the
country and abroad. It will also as I have always
done
throughout my 35 years long journalistic career and
my
20 years stint at the ?Herald? , put the public
interest above all sectarian, political and even
commercial imperatives and compulsions.
5. Besides the widely read and appreciated weekly
column ?Stray Thoughts? the new weekly will on a
continuous basis provide in-depth analysis on
political, social and economical developments in Goa
and its neighbouring states . Of special interest
and
focus will be combating any tendencies towards
communalizing Goan society and vital issues
concerning
the ecology and environment of Goa, subjects which
fail to get highlighted in the present media because
of commercial and vested interests.
Alvares (environmentalist) , Thomazin Cardozo
(former
speaker and noted cultural activist), Dr. Sudhir
Kakkar (internationally known socialogist and
psychoanalyast), Ervell Menezes (film critic),
Devika
Sequeira (senior journalist) and many others.
7. Every issue would have one or more in-depth
investigative reports on a matter of public concern
and of a topical nature, besides several human
interest stories, since I firmly believe that
magazines and newspapers should become more
people-centric.
8. Every 16-page issue will have a four-page section
in colour which will provide continually update
information for the benefit of tourists on where to
eat, what to see, what facilities exist , what
hazards
they may face, events including ethnic an cultural
events that might interest them ? indeed, a complete
regularly updated and comprehensive guide for
domestic
and foreign tourist.
9. The Independent Goan Observer will be politically
neutral not in a passive way but will be equally
critical of all political parties and formations
10. The Independent Goan Observer is envisaged as a
media organization which will
be participated and owned by the readers themselves.

Eugene Correia

Fred,

And the Goan "intelligentsia"
in Goa - nobody saying anything on this?

of journalists have been systematically sidelined, and find it very
difficult to get published.
The pressures on the press, particularly under the current dispensation,

Viva Rajan

One would guess that as editor of the Herald for the last 20 years, Rajan

Viva Rajan

and his RSS cohorts to force their editor Mr. Rajan
Narayan to resign. The Herald was the only paper to
bring out the truth on all fronts, and was known for
its reputation for not succumbing to political
pressures. It appears that the pressure was too much
for the CM as all his black lies and communistic
designs were getting exposed. He has taken the final
step to blackmail the owners of Herald to force the
editor to resign.
?
In doing so Mr. Manohar Parrikar has finally dropped
his mask. Everybody should read the message on the
wall. All citizens Hindus Christian and Muslim
should
take firm steps individually to throw out this
fascist
regime. If we do not do this now, the communal rot
will sink in deeper and Goa our lovely land of
Communal Harmony will be doomed.
?
Let us look at the brighter side of things. Mr.
Rajan
Narayan is starting his own newspaper, which will
have
no skeletons in the closet. Dedicated people have
volunteered already and others can now join up to
fight the sickness of communalism and other citizen
oriented issues and bring out the truths. The
Supreme
Court has indicted the Modi Government in Gujarat IN
THE Best Bakery issue and has openly stated that it
had no faith in the Gujarat Government. This gives a
clear picture of what to expect of Goa with Mr.
Modi?s
good friend Mr. Manohar Parrikar. In removing Mr.
Rajan Narayan he has created a third force which the
silenced I repeat silenced citizens of this lovely
state can approach.
?
We hope he and his RSS cohorts will not make him
disappear. Only time will tell.
?
Mr. Rajan Narayan has opened a new site
http://rajannarayan.com please visit this site for
further information. Here is an extract of his first
bulletin.
?
R A T I O N A L E
1. After 20 years with the English edition of the
?Herald? which I started and built up to its present
stature as the no. 1 newspaper in the state of Goa,
I
have decided that the time has come for me to start
my
own Independent Newspaper.
2. I have been compelled to take this decision
because
the present management structure of the ? Herald ?
is
no longer conducive to practice and uphold the
highest
standards of professionalism and to offer justice to
meet the aspirations and expectations of the
residents
of Goa.
?
3. I have decided to start a Broadsheet 16-page
weekly
modelled on the one-time highly successful ?Sunday
Observer? in Mumbai. I have deliberately and
consciously opted to start a weekly as I believe
that
daily newspapers cannot any longer compete with the
electronic media in terms of pure news . as pointed
out by the Union Minister for Information Technology
and veteran journalist Arun Shourie recently,
newspaper have to re-invent themselves and focus
more
on analysis and background rather than hard news. I
believe a weekly offers more scope for in-depth
analysis as one is not bogged down in the exigencies
of running a daily newspaper.
4. The proposed weekly will be Konkan-centric and in
keeping with my historical position, will
proactively
and aggressively work to preserve and promote Goa?s
historical tradition of communal harmony and fusion
and the larger ethnic and linguistic entity which
constitutes the Konkani speaking diaspora in the
country and abroad. It will also as I have always
done
throughout my 35 years long journalistic career and
my
20 years stint at the ?Herald? , put the public
interest above all sectarian, political and even
commercial imperatives and compulsions.
5. Besides the widely read and appreciated weekly
column ?Stray Thoughts? the new weekly will on a
continuous basis provide in-depth analysis on
political, social and economical developments in Goa
and its neighbouring states . Of special interest
and
focus will be combating any tendencies towards
communalizing Goan society and vital issues
concerning
the ecology and environment of Goa, subjects which
fail to get highlighted in the present media because
of commercial and vested interests.
Alvares (environmentalist) , Thomazin Cardozo
(former
speaker and noted cultural activist), Dr. Sudhir
Kakkar (internationally known socialogist and
psychoanalyast), Ervell Menezes (film critic),
Devika
Sequeira (senior journalist) and many others.
7. Every issue would have one or more in-depth
investigative reports on a matter of public concern
and of a topical nature, besides several human
interest stories, since I firmly believe that
magazines and newspapers should become more
people-centric.
8. Every 16-page issue will have a four-page section
in colour which will provide continually update
information for the benefit of tourists on where to
eat, what to see, what facilities exist , what
hazards
they may face, events including ethnic an cultural
events that might interest them ? indeed, a complete
regularly updated and comprehensive guide for
domestic
and foreign tourist.
9. The Independent Goan Observer will be politically
neutral not in a passive way but will be equally
critical of all political parties and formations
10. The Independent Goan Observer is envisaged as a
media organization which will
be participated and owned by the readers themselves.
