I suggest sending *two* posts when you post a program description. One
in the description thread and one in the discussion thread so people can
post their comments about the app.

Like so:

Subject: PL2007 Program Descriptions: MyFavoriteProgram
(The program description post should have ONLY the description for the
web page.)

Subject: [PL] PL2007 Discussion: MyFavoriteProgram
(The discussion thread can have any other info and comments you care to
add.)

I've used Anti-Vir in it's earlier versions and found that it was
pretty goog. It does have some problems with false-positives from time
to time. This is a function attributable to the heuristic engine, or so
I beleive. Overall, I prefer it to AVG and Avast.

The description needs no changes.

Well, I switched to Avast. I really don't like the registration part,
but that is a very small inconvenience that I'm willing to make every
14 months (what it said after my 60 day registration expired).

We're really lucky in the domain of freeware anti-viral programs!

Yes, indeed we are. I'm quite pleased that there are several good
programs available. Not to mention the fact that one program may not
suit individual users preferences.

I had a motherboard go bad and I had to do a clean install. This is
when I tried Avast, and I really like it. At that time, Avira AntiVir
really had a tough time in updating. Have they addressed this issue
yet?

I was using the incremental updating version. It was beta for awhile,
and I'm not sure if it went on to a good working alpha version or not.

I did like it very much as an AV.

I don't know if they have or not. I'm not running an AV on this
particular box at the moment.

I appreciate your check of the description. :) :) :)

"industrial-strength" is a quote from info on one of the GParted web
pages - I'm reluctant to change it. Most authors have a blurb that can
be copied and pasted (this app's description was a challenge).

Note: PAD files often contain both long and short paragraph descriptions
of the program and a lot of other useful info. You can search for pad
files here (and/or use Google):

I realize that most folks from North America probably would not have

Gparted is a challenging program by itself so it's no wonder that
describing it is also a challenge.

That description *was* a challenge. :)

Once a description is uploaded for discussion *everybody* can
review/check it and let me know if it needs corrections and/or updating.

Often information is NOT readily available online - info about the less
desirable "ware types", whether or not *free* is limited to personal use
only etc. IOW I need all the help I can get. . .

folder irrespective of changing operating systems or changes in
registry.

I installed it and a few weeks later my operating system crashed. I
installed win 2000 pro again, and this program ran without any
complaints in the new operating system. So it is of the same type as
Opera browser and Pixia, it runs happily from its own folder in any
environment after the initial installation.

It is not dependent on registry entries, so it would probably run from
an usb-memory too.
.........

As this is the discussion thread, let me add that I am very impressed
by the smoothness of the brushes, how the paint is laid on when you
move a brush. One of the best paint programs in that respect I have
ever tried. And that is the most important function in a paint program.

The user interface is the best I have ever seen in a paint program, it
is very easy to understand and control the brush size, density,
luminence and opacity, nice big sliders which are easy to move with the
mouse.

The color is also very easy to change with big sliders for small
changes in the nuance, one slider for each of the three colors red,
blue and green, plus a color selector for big changes, like from red to
blue.

The settings for brush type and subsettings for brushes are easily
available under the canvas settings. The author of this program has
really thought a lot about the user interface and has created the best
user interface I have seen in a paint program.

Something I often miss in other paint programs is the ability to
quickly save a brush with all its characteristics, like size, type and
color. That is very easy to do in Twisted Brush.

5*12 saved brushes are immediately available, and you can easily switch
between 8 such sets of 60 saved brushes because the save box has 8 tabs
you can click on to switch to another set of 5*12 brushes.

The first 7 sets of saved brushes are already preset to a multitude of
different brushes of many different types, the number 8 tab has 60
empty unset brush places.
You can rightclick on a saved brush mark to set the color to the one
you are using.

In the filter menu it has image processing filters and adjustments
which is similar in function and numbers to the image processing
functions in Photofiltre.

The most amazing and mindblowing feature of this program is when you
start to explore the brush effects panel. Last icon in the toolbar,
toggle effects panel off or on.

You can apply one or more effects to a brush, in addition to the basic
settings, and it can produce the most strange and fantastic effects.

If you turn on too many effects on the same brush it will become slow,
but it also starts behaving like a psychedelic screensaver all on its
own. It is simply mindblowing how many different effects and
combinations of effects that can be applied to a brush.

I know enough about math to understand that all these possibilities
multiplied with each other make the possible variations of brush
effects into a huge number, like a billion different combinations or
more.

You can save the painting in bmp, jpg, and png formats.

You can import pictures in TIF, TGA, BMP, JPEG, PNG formats.

The program has many more features like scripting, saving art sets,
masks, having several paintings open simultaneously organized in pages
and books, different canvases.

Zooming in and out is easy with menu selections and keyboard shortcuts.
The right mouse button can be used for different functions, for example
as color picker.

....

about the GIF format:

Twisted Brush (freeware) cannot import or write to gif format, probably
because gif is a format which you have to pay licences to use. I just
checked with Pixia (freeware), it has even more import formats but not
gif.
I checked in Paintshop pro 7 (payware), and it can import gif files. So
Psp has probably paid for using gif files.

I checked Artweaver (newly updated freeware), and it can open gif
files.

Maybe the status of gif files have changed lately, so older freeware
programs have not used it but newer paint programs have started using
the gif format.

Yes, a quick search confirms my hunch, from a web page:

"1. We were able to search the patent databases of the USA, Canada,
Japan, and the European Union. The Unisys patent expired on 20 June
2003 in the USA, in Europe it expired on 18 June 2004, in Japan the
patent expired on 20 June 2004 and in Canada it expired on 7 July 2004.
The U.S. IBM patent expired 11 August 2006, The Software Freedom Law
Center says that after 1 October 2006, there will be no significant
patent claims interfering with employment of the GIF format."

NetMeter is a small, customizable network bandwidth monitoring program.
The graph shows in real time what is happening on your internet
connection.
A perfect download looks like a solid red rectangle moving to the left.
Pauses or disturbings in the transmissions or lower speeds are easy to
see.

Features

Netmeter can be customized in many ways, the title line and text line
can be disabled leaving only a rectangle diagram. The possible top
speed of your connection can be set up to be at the top of the diagram.
The graph window can be dimensioned and moved easily to any size, shape
and position. Rightclicking on the tray icon shows a menu with
functions like options and statistics for daily, weekly and monthly up
and download totals.

07a (Notes)

There are two versions of the program available. If the latest causes
any problems you can try the older version. Both are called beta
versions but work very well and have been recommended by several people
in ACF.

.........

This is the network monitor program which many think is the best in its
category, better than all freeware and payware alternatives.
It has all the natural features you can think of.
For example clicking on its tray icon hides or unhides the graph.
It can be set to be transparent on later windows versions.
If you want to study very slow traffic you can pull down the lower box
border to make the graph very high and you can see very slow traffic at
the bottom of the graph.

The graph window can be placed anywhere on the screen but I think it
fits well on the title line and the menu line of a maximized program,
to the right of the center, where titles and menus usually leave some
free space.

Several people have recommended this program so I think it will be easy
to get it nominated.

Yes ... Locate32 can create multiple databases, with each one indexing a
different subset of files.

Also, on further reflection, the index also stores other details besides
filename and pathname. The index also stores date/time and file size
information. This is obvious when you do a search on file size alone, or on
date/time alone ... the results are still lightning quick.

Also, a detail I omitted ... directory names are indexed in addition to the
filenames. So Locate32 is great for finding directories as well as files.

The above would require a complete restructuring of the Pricelessware

Ideally the program descriptions will be submitted in the *exact* same

the amount of work I have to do).

Do we have to write descriptions of old and well known programs like
Pixia and Opera browser as well as new and less known programs, or are
those old programs automatically nominated/described somehow?

It seems natural to me that the programs that were described last year
are automatically added this year so we can vote for them, but I am not
sure about how it works.

Please clarify the situation to us.

Okay. This is going to be a lot of work.
Do you have some file, or web page, we can look in for the old program
descriptions?

I mean it would be easier to revise an old description than to write a
new one from scratch for all the programs which were described last

*** NO programs are added automatically. ***
"Program descriptions must be posted for ALL candidate programs."
ALL description may need revision (the last check of *everything* in the
PL2007 description was done a year ago). Program versions change. Links
change. Ware types change. Supported OS change. etc. etc. etc.
*** The nominations list is NOT created automatically. ***
October 1 - October 24, 2006 - Program description submittals.
Okay. This is going to be a lot of work.
Do you have some file, or web page, we can look in for the old program
descriptions?
I mean it would be easier to revise an old description than to write a
new one from scratch for all the programs which were described last
year.
Yup. Much easier! and if a program was on the PL or listed for
nomination in the last several years there *IS* an existing description.
:) The most *recent* description is linked on the ACF pages. The brief
description on the ACF pages may be more up to date (if the program
name, home page, ware type etc. have changed since the PL description
was written).

Below is a repeat of the info that was in the first post in the Program
Description thread:

The most recent program description (if one exists) can be found by
going to the brief program descriptions on the ACF program information
pages and following the link that is shown there. Those descriptions
should be revised/updated as needed before you post them. Changes should
be noted. If no changes are required please note that too. (If there is
no existing program description you'll have to start from scratch. If
the program is not shown on the ACF program information pages include
the category and subcategory for the program.)
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/P_ProgramIndex.php

see the Review Procedures web page for more information (the rules for
program eligibility etc.):

(I read the first messages very carefully, but in this thread, not in

I looked for the description of Opera, and it has a link to a
description, but the link doesn't work fully, it took me to the right
file, where the descriptions are:

http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/P_programs.php#3087

but Opera has no entry there so it left me at the beginning of the web
page.
The description for Opera must have disappeared somehow.

Anyhow, I am happy I have found the descriptions page, that is the url
I need most:

http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/P_programs.php

The url http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/P_ProgramIndex.php is also
very useful, to find a link to the program on the web.

I can only hope this information is of use to others beside me who have
missed the info earlier so I didn't take up your time only for my own
sake.

hmmm. . . . that's the link below Opera - the link for SeaMonkey - and
it doesn't work properly because I changed SeaMonkey's ID number. The
program description page hasn't been updated since that happened.
I will revise. FWIW I think you may have found the ONlY program link
that doesn't work. ;)

Getting back to the problem at hand - Opera is here

and in the description column (desc) it links to the PL06 description
(the most *recent* description):

It seems natural to me that the programs that were described last year
are automatically added this year so we can vote for them, but I am not
sure about how it works.
< snip >

Having to nominate programs that are already PL ones is a complete
waste of everyone's time. There are far too many to list individually.

It is easy enough to have two threads :

(1) Programs nominated that aren't already on the PL list.

(2) Programs currently on the PL list/or nominated that should now
be removed.

At a much later date if it turns out that some "new" winners add too
many in a category then a "final" vote could be done for that category
eg. "The following 7 newsreaders have been nominated.
Please list ONLY the ones you want to vote for. Maximum 3."

I'm not entirely clear on what you're suggesting but it sounds more
complicated than the present process. . .

We will have a single list for program nominations - with the same
format as the final ballot. Nominations and seconds are easy to make and
track when we do it that way.

ATM we're not *nominating* programs - we're creating a list of programs
that have *verified* program descriptions.

If a program is on PL2006 the first step is a copy and paste of the
PL2006 description. If revisions are needed they are noted. If no
changes are needed that is noted - as Whirled Peas did just now when he
posted the description for OpenOffice.org - "No changes made from 2006
listing."

How hard is that? ;)

dunno why more PL2006 programs haven't been posted - maybe people don't
want most PL2006 programs on PL2007. . .

Maybe most people simply assume that they're already there, so why
bother again? Perhaps you haven't been emphatic enough in pointing
out that the previous listings need to be verified, if nothing else.
So in a way people are agreeing with John in practice.

I tend to agree with you, Susie, that the old ones do need to be
checked out to confirm links and such, and to be sure they haven't
dropped off the twig or been upgraded or whatever in the past year.

Cheers, Phred.

This makes me think about how it could be organized in a way that
simplifies this procedure. If we had a wiki with one program per page,
with a description at the top and some comments below, (discussions on
the discussion page that belong to each wiki page) it could be revised
continously during the year, so we can assume that all descriptions are
correct at voting time. Then we would not have to re-enter all programs
each year, just add new ones.

People who have no experience with wikis do not understand how that
could work, it would be so easy to vandalize any page, but it works
quite well in wikipedia and other wikis because there are people who
keep an eye on their favorite pages, and revert vandalism and fix
errors.

Such a wiki system could relieve Susan from a lot of work and
distribute the work among the participators better. Each participator
keeps an eye on his favorite program pages and makes sure the
information is updated and correct.

It is, of course, too late to change anything this year, but it is an
idea for the future.

hmmm. . .

I added (part of) Treepad's description to the wiki's page for Treepad:

http://acfwiki.pbwiki.com/0790-PW

Then I tried bringing that into the program description web page (I
omitted the other descriptions temporarily). The results are visible here:

http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2007/P_programs.php

dunno if there's an easy way to get rid of the extra "stuff" PBwiki adds
to a web page - it might be time to move the wiki to the PWH web site.

Eureka! The solution is to upload an "HTML" page to the wiki site and
link to that: http://acfwiki.pbwiki.com/f/0790-PW.htm

Now the Pricelessware page looks the way it should (at this point).

The contents of the "HTML" file are:

---------

Windows OS: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
Other OS: Linux
Languages: English
Description: TreePad Lite and TreePad Asia are very intuitive, small yet
powerful personal database programs. They allow you to store all your
notes, emails, texts, hyperlinks, etc. into one or multiple databases.
With the look and feel of the familiar Windows explorer, editing,
storing, browsing, searching and retrieving your data can not be easier!
TreePad can be run directly from a floppy, if necessary, including data.
To find any article you previously created or imported, you can browse
the tree, in the same way as you browse directories/folders in the
Windows explorer. You can also use the internal search engine to find
any piece of information swiftly. While TreePad Asia supports
non-western/Asian fonts through the Windows IME system, TreePad Lite is
made for Western users.

This url becomes very unformatted in my browser. A tight block of text
which seems to lack any line breaks.

Maybe it would be better to add blank lines between sections in the
page and hope these blank lines keep the different sections separated
and make it look more structured.

Possibly each page could go through some processing, scripting, to add
blank lines between sections, or maybe between each line, to preserve
the structure in the original.

Or leave that task to the volunteers who are interested in the program
:-)

There should be a guideline or a master page which shows how the
description should be formatted to make a standard. If templates are
supported in the wiki the html pages could maybe be exported into a
template, or leave it up to the volunteers to make all descriptions
formatted similarly.

Getting the information into the wiki is the important first step,
that's good enough, if that can be done in an automated way.

Hit the reload button. ;)

The columns on the program index page for "OS(Win)", OS(other), and
"DescRev" will be omitted. Otherwise the PL2007 web pages will look and
work the same as the PL2006 pages - with the possible exception of the
"body" of the program descriptions - the part *other* volunteers will
prepare.

Details to follow. . .

I look at the listing of all pages in the wiki, sorted by date, to see
the latest pages.

The 0790-PW page looks good, the formatting is good.
This wiki has not been used so much, the total number of pages is still
fairly low.

On the login page are instructions for how to create notes pages for
programs listed on the pricelesswarehome site. Not too difficult, not
too easy. It looks like it would be possible to use this solution, if
the participators accept to learn to handle the wiki instead of writing
descriptions in messages.

Go for it Susan!
I wonder if Susan can import the descriptions from the wiki to to the
PL site, if needed, to create the ISO listing, for example.
Some routines which were defined before would have to be changed. It's
up to Susan to decide if she can work with the wiki solution. Now or
later.
The wiki solution must fit into her routines in several ways to save
work for her instead of creating more work than before.

And thanks for the idea Roger!
Thanks.

The start of a new Pricelessware year is the *perfect* time to make this
kind of change and I think we might be able to do it - I'm going to try
a few things. . .

Wiiki pages do NOT work (as I said in an earlier message). If I try to
use a wiki page it brings in the *entire* page -> WYSIWYG. HTML pages DO
work (pbwiki does not add code to those pages).

I'm not sure what you mean by "ISO listing". . . I won't need to import
anything for the web pages. I don't put PHP files on the Pricelessware
CD. The online pages are downloaded with HTTRACK - everything that's
shown on the web pages is in the HTML web pages that are downloaded.

I will need a list of the files that are to be included on the CD - that
can be done in the wiki (by other volunteers). I haven't looked at the
web page that shows the list of files yet. Coordinating the files and
the web pages is a real PITA. . . having many people watching for last
minute changes in versions should help.

I uploaded more HTML files to the wiki. Go to the nominations page and
try the program descriptions links if you want to see the more or less
finished product (I haven't included the author and ware info).

We can do even better with MediaWiki
<http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki>
with the Semantic MediaWiki extension
<http://wiki.ontoworld.org/index.php/Main_Page> and
<http://wiki.ontoworld.org/wiki/Semantic_MediaWiki>.

Imagine a free form database with dynamic searches
<http://wiki.ontoworld.org/wiki/Help:Inline_queries>

Ex: <http://ontoworld.org/wiki/Python>

I'm already this myself. Using this combination to create a database of
software that I download and test and is fantastic and incredibly flexible.

For example: for this year listing we would create a page with the
following search

<ask>[[Release date:2007]] [[Category:Freeware]]</ask>

and the page would be populated with every application released in 2007
that is Freeware. No more retyping. Create *One Time* reuse *Everywhere*.

We can create this on Wikia <http://www.wikia.com/wiki/Wikia>.

This sounds fairly easy to set up when you describe it with your
knowledge.

Could you set up a demo system of this type, so we can see how it would
work?

If you need database files containing for example last year's
descriptions I am sure you can get those files from Susan. As far as I
understand she uses a spreadsheet system as the basis for her work, and
spreadsheet files can probably be used as database files, with maybe
some conversion involved.

If you set up an alternative system in parallell to the one we are
trying to create on pbwiki we can then decide which system works best.

Personally I am worried about the account type we have on pbwiki, it
looks like everybody have admin/owner level rights, which means big
risks for the whole wiki.

I have set up a few wikis myself, and in those wikis there is a big
difference between owner level, admin level, users with limited rights,
and read-only rights for visitors.

The procedure for entering new pages in this pbwiki system we are now
contemplating is also very complicated, where authors must create html
files and upload them, instead of editing the wiki pages in a normal
manner.
And there are issues we have not investigated, for example if one
person uploads a html description, and then another person edits that
wiki page, does the format stay html or is it converted to wiki format?

It would be very valuable if you could set up an alternative system on
Wikia so we can see how it works. If it is as easy as you make it sound
it shouldn't require so much work :-)

I'm not that knowledgeable. I've no experience managing web sites. My
experience refers only to setting up mediawiki based systems on my own
computer. This fairly easy.

To set up a demo system on wikia we need to know if they (wikia) allows
us to install the Semantic Mediawiki extension. This could be a starting
point <http://www.wikia.com/wiki/Technical_support>
If this is possible, i would then create a few demo pages for you to see
if it's worth it.

If that's not possible we need a host with apache, mysql and php support.

If that's not possible someone could set up one with XAMPP.

As I've not programming experience I can't help importing the data in
automatic way.

We could set up different level rights and freeze pages so that they
cannot be hijacked.

It seems that you have more knowledge than me at setting up wikis and
web sites.

I once set up a local mediawiki system on my computer, with an sql
server, and a mediawiki system. But I don't know anything about using a
database connected to a wiki and what is really possible, I just tested
using it as a simple wiki system such as wikipedia.

Several alternatives, obviously. Do we know somebody who can satisfy
any of these requirements? (question to the newsgroup)
But, you know, such a system must be able to connect easily with the
system we already have at the pricelessware site. We cannot start over
from scratch, there are years of old data which need to be incorporated
into any new solution.

Yes, a mediawiki system could probably be much safer and if it was
connected so we could import and export to database files it could be a
much better solution.

But I guess we will have to do the best we can with the resources we
actually have already, Susan's spreadsheet files, a newsgroup and a
pbwiki system.

during the last 24 hours.

portable. If someone wants try something new I'll be happy to furnish

You have previously done a list of PL programs. Did you lose it ?
We have also read the msg from spoon2001 in the other thread:

"One has to find the instructions, read and comprehend them. One has
to find
the existing program description on the ACF website, and then submit
any
required changes. A lot of cross-referencing is required. A lot of
searching is required to fill in the fields of the Program Description.

Most people just aren't going to jump through these hoops. The process
has
to be simplified somehow, to induce people to participate."

And I agree. The ambition level has maybe been raised a bit too high.
I think we should be able to nominate programs just by name, if the
program is well known, for example "Opera, web browser".
Maybe others can reply to that message and both add the url, license
and support the nomination, if needed.

We can continue with this system of newsgroup messages and maybe lower
the requirements for an entry. A message with only the words "Opera,
opera.com" would be accepted.
But that leaves Susan in the position of having to copy info from
newsgroup messages.
It works as long as she wants to do all that work and maybe also
research the info needed to complete the description.

The question is if we can find a way to automate the process, make the
other participators do more of the work needed to uphold this standard
to relieve Susan of all the work she is doing now. Or lower the
standard, maybe wait with complete descriptions until a later stage.
Maybe use the descriptions from the last year unless somebody points
out something that needs changing, and he asks Susan to change it and
she does the work.

Again the problem is that we cannot easily go into the pricelessware
web site and change descriptions, like we could if we had a wiki
system.

Automatically accept the descriptions of all programs from last year ?

The wiki idea would have been great if we could really have used it as
a wiki, like read and add a page without logging in, and Susan could
have imported that automatically somehow.

A wiki that works like wikipedia is easy to use, and the first person
can write only the program name and an url, another reader adds some
other info, and by time it would grow and become more and more
complete.

But that only works if we find a wiki which uses html formatted pages,
or if Susan can import data from a wiki page as it is.

Maybe it could be imported from any wiki system if we decide on a
standard, like write the program name on a line beginning with certain
keywords:

Program name: Opera
URL: opera.com
Description: Web browser.

Maybe that could be imported even if it is not in html format?
Some people who know scripting could help by giving Susan a script that
finds and imports the info from any kind of wiki page.

Find text line that begins with "Program name", import the words after
the : character.
Etc..

A wiki system would also have the advantage that it continues to work
if/when Susan gets tired of this work. Once set up it would remain.
Backed up it can be restored at a new wiki with the same system, and
mediawiki is the most common wiki system.
Many of us already know how to handle the system at wikipedia.

A web site like the pricelessware site must be maintained by a certain
person, or a few, who knows the password and can handle the html format
and everything else a web site maintainer needs to know and handle.
A wiki site is a lot easier to maintain by a big group of volunteers,
anybody who wants to contribute can do it easily.

In the longer perspective I still think that a wiki is a good idea, but
we have to take our time, find a good way of incorporating a wiki in
the process, a wiki that in the longer run can take over more of the
work. I doubt that the pbwiki system is the most suitable wiki system,
but that is what we have right now.

So I think we should continue as before, accept more or less complete
descriptions in the newsgroup, and the pages uploaded to the wiki, and
I suggest that we should use the description for a program from last
year if no new description has arrived.

Loosen up on the formalities, this is no united nations security
council session, we are just voting for the best freeware programs in
each category.

when we began the PL2004 selection process, the PL2005 selection process
and the PL2006 process. . .
This is what I DO volunteer to do re PL2007;

1.list the programs that are eligible for nomination To do that I need
this information:
a. category
b. subcategory
c. program name
d. company
e. author's name
f. ware description

2.count the nominations and seconds.
3. create the PL ballot and the PL ware ballot
4. count the votes to determine the winners (subject to final discussion)
6. prepare Pricelessware web pages with the following information:
a. category
b. subcategory
c. program name
d. company
e. author's name
f. ware description

g. OTHER INFORMATION - IF AVAILABLE

I have created the web pages for PL2003, PL2004, PL2005 and PL2006. I'm
more than ready to turn the job over to someone else. Are there any
volunteers?

If not then we should discuss WHAT should be done by others re "other
information". IOW are full descriptions necessary or optional?

I hope you don't mind that I am (and others are) trying to find a
better way to work which would allow many participators to help out in
keeping program descriptions updated.

The games people want to create a games section of pricelessware, and I
hope they realize that it is too much work for one web site maintainer
to do all the work, no matter if they set up a new web site or it is
placed on the same site as the current PL site.

If we do the program descriptions in a wiki instead, and take that load
of work off the web site maintainer it could allow us to update the
descriptions continuously during the whole year, and we wouldn't have
to worry about that when it is time to vote.

We could nominate programs with only the name and a link to the program
page in the wiki.

I am not sure the pbwiki system is the best to use for the future,
maybe we should think about the possibilities to set up a new wiki for
program descriptions which would work like wikipedia, which uses the
most common wiki system wikimedia, and most of us are already familiar
with how such a system works.

Maybe we should start a new thread about how we could reform the way it
works, or maybe it is okay to continue this discussion here in the
program discussion thread.
I don't know, what do others think?
Very few are involved in the discussion, that is positive in one way,
it doesn't take much place, it is negative in the way that it would be
nice if more people were interested.

It's like the world in general, most people don't have time or energy
for any reforms, they want everything to continue as before. :-)

with how such a system works.
The PHP pages can incorporate HTNL pages (as you already know). I don't
know if I can incorporate any and all wiki pages into the Pricelessware
pages (the coding used in the wiki might be a problem) - but for sure I
could show a link to a wiki page that has the program description.
Post by Roger Johansson
Maybe we should start a new thread about how we could reform the way it
works, or maybe it is okay to continue this discussion here in the
program discussion thread.
I don't know, what do others think?
IMO the big question ATM is whether or not a program description is
going to be *required*. If it is we need a deadline for the descriptions
- otherwise programs may be selected for the PL and then have to be
removed.

Once a link check has been done then a list of existing programs could
be made. One program per line.
Made by who?
You have previously done a list of PL programs. Did you lose it ?

You're the one that staged a coup here. You're the one lied and cheated her way to the top. You're the one that wanted to be Queen of ACF. You're the one that has to deal with the duties that come with the office. You don't like it? Then step down.

Thanks, Susan.

I just tested the link to Buzzy's review, it doesn't work, 404, file
not found.

Aha, looking for better reviews of Netmeter I found Buzzy's newer site,
with a long review of Netmeter and many screenshots:

I suggest you replace the old, nonworking link with this one.

The only thing I miss in Buzzy's review is a screenshot of Netmeter
without the title line and text line below, with just the graph window,
which is my favorite configuration.
If you fix the top speed of the graph to the highest speed possible in
your internet connection (in the settings of Netmeter) you can easily
see how fast a transfer is relative to your top speed without having a
text line below the graph.

[PL] PL2007 Discussion: General Discussion
October 1 - October 24, 2006 - Program description submittals. Discussion.
Starting now we're going to use a different method for program
description submittals. A program description will have two parts - the
*body* of the description will be uploaded as an HTML file to the ACF
wiki by the person who submits the program description. (That HTML file
will be called by PHP scripting in the Pricelessware files and shown on
the Pricelessware web pages in the same place we display that
information now.)

Existing descriptions can be cut and pasted into the HTML files - look
at the page source (PL2006 pages or the ACF descriptions page) and copy
the part of the description you need.

The nominations "description" page has already been recoded to call the
HTML files it needs and the files have been uploaded to the wiki. See:
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2007/P_programs.php
As new program descriptions are submitted the PHP file will be revised
to include the names of the new HTML files. If they exist the web page
will show them.

This is part one of a typical program description:

-------------

TreePad Lite and TreePad Asia
Company: -- Author: Henk Hagedoorn
(Liteware) (free)

--------------

All the information in part one is shown on the ACF web pages (if the
program is one of the 4200+ programs that are listed). If you agree with
the description on the ACF page all you need to post in the PL2007
program description thread is the name of the program and the link to
its brief description. That link is shown on the Program Index page.
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/P_ProgramIndex.php
If the program is not listed on the ACF pages you will need to furnish
the ACF description information.

This is part two of a typical program description (the part that is
uploaded to the wiki).

Questions? Comments?
We cannot use the composition window in the wiki to create a
description, instead we should use a program like Abiword and export
the description text as a html file.(?)

I just tried copying and pasting the description of Treepad above into
Abiword, as if I had written it myself, and then exported it as a html
file.

I had several choices to make about the format, html 4.01 or xhtml,
etc..

The resulting html file looked like the text I copied. But it contained
a lot of font settings and such which depend on how I have set my
programs.
If we do not have detailed specifications of the html file we will end
up with hundreds of different types of html files, fonts, colors,
embedded css, etc..

The procedure for creating descriptions is a bit unclear.
I tried something like this:

Start by looking at
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/P_ProgramIndex.php
if the program is present there, follow the link into
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/P_ORGANIZERS.php#0790-PW
for example (for Treepad), try the notes link to see if somebody has
already
submitted a description.

If not you have to create a html file with a file description.
Give it a carefully crafted file name, with the right number and
according to the naming standard for such files. This is not easy.

Log into the wiki, using the password you can find somewhere.
Upload the html file you have created.

Weaknesses with this system:

It is a rather complicated procedure.
The one who is writing a descr must be able to create html files.
The html files from different people can look very different.

The password to the wiki seems to be the admin password, so anybody who
has it can change the whole wiki in significant ways, like change the
skin, delete pages en masse, or delete the whole wiki(?) This wiki
account type seems to be a bit unsafe.

Well, those are only a few reflections, comments, questions, which show
up in my head.
I have probably misunderstood some or not fully understood some.

ISTM that's pretty much a moot point so far - to date only a few

I thought about that earlier too, we actually need full descriptions

On the other hand, it is nice to have updated descriptions so we can
look up reviews that actually exist, for example, before the votings.

Yes, we need some kind of template, so we can write the descriptions in
simple text editors, but save them as html.
Using a program like Abiword added so much unnecessary stuff in the
html file.
Publishing a template in the newsgroup could help.

One problem is naming the html files correctly before upload.

"The link to Treepad's description is:
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/P_ORGANIZERS.php#0790-PW

The part after the # sign is the program's ID number. The HTML file
that's uploaded to the wiki must use the program's ID in the name =>
Treepad's wiki file is named "0790-PW.htm""

How to name a program which does not already have an ID number?

How to upload, what is the url of the upload page, how to log in to the
wiki so you can upload, what is the password?

I think we need a detailed how-to explanation to such questions before
more people start uploading descriptions in this way.

I agree. :) It's nice to know what we're voting for. . .

That's a lot of work. (Where have I heard that before?) IOW so far I
