What Did You Watch? 2019-08-09 (Friday)

I watched:

CHIPS:
"Ice Cream Man". An ex-CHIP sergeant who was convicted of grand theft
and resembles Nicolas Hammond shows up as an ice cream man to clear his
name, send his former crime boss to jail, and reconcile with his wife
who told their son he died in a shootout apprehending a criminal.
Meanwhile, a skunk takes up residence in the stationhouse garage. I am
not sure the mere presence of a skunk makes things smell bad; don't
they have to spray their musk?

CHIPS:
"Overload". Computer parts theives looks for a spunky old lady who saw
them after a specctacular multiple car wreck because when she
investigated their truck, the guy hiding in the back shined his
spotlight into her eyes, briefly heepnotizing her or soemthing. Hey,
it's one of the Baldwin Sisters! Meanwhile, a pre-trope computer
malfunction frustrates everyone after it loses the contents of Ponch's
"little black bok" (how exactly did he enter it?) and zeroes out
everyone's bank accounts, howver that happened.

CHIPS:
"K-9-1".While robbers dressed up as cowboys rob casino buses; two
competing canine-unit trainers with heavy sexual tension compete to
survive a budget cut. When the girl's dog goes is blinded by a bomb,
Ponch and Jon prove the dog can still function, so they never really
resolved the issue of which one got laid off.

HEEPNOTIZE ME:
"Around the World". The premiere of the game show in which contestants
put their skills to the test and take a trip around the world as they
are challenged to complete simple tasks while hypnotized. I'm on the
fence about hypnosis, but this show was surprisingly tedious.

THE UNXPLAINED:
"Unnatural Nature". Many mysteries of planet Earth are far from
understood. This episode will try to find out how the Devil's Tower was
formed and other unsolved mysteries of the planet earth. Is this a new
show or a repackaged one? The show lost a lot opf credability with me
when they stated no one knows how Devil's Tower was formed.

My freshman year of college, I lived in the dorms. To entertain us they
brought in a hypnotist. He selected a few people to be "hypnotized" and
join him on stage. But first he did a mass test to see who was
susceptible. I was *not* susceptible. Those who were, were those who
are obviously willing to play along. I was not amused.


This is a two day catch up. I watched:


Elementary - "Reichenbach Falls" - Already covered.


Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (theatrical) horror film based on a
children's book series of the same name. Set in 1968 on Halloween, a
group of teens decide to break into an old house with a history. The
family that lived there were rich, but kept their daughter locked in the
basement. The daughter was blamed for a bunch of deaths before being
shipped off to an asylum. The teens find the daughter's book which is
full of scary stories. But soon new scary stories start to be written
and the new stories come to life. The movie sort of reminded me of a
horror anthology, except although the monsters/kills were all different
the overall movie had the same core group of characters following a
common plot. I guess the movie was OK. It had some pretty good scares
for a PG-13 horror flick. And off the top of my head, I can't think of
anything overtly stupid that a character did. That's always a plus!
But overall, it could have been better. Actually, it reminded me of
when "Jeepers Creepers" came out and the overall consensus seemed to be
the "psychic" character ruined the movie for some. This movie had a
similar character with a similar effect. But overall it's worth at
least a rental. And I wouldn't mind the obvious sequel they set up.

room for a sequel. Either that or the comic left room for a sequel. A
couple of minor issues aside, it's worth checking out.

The Kitchen definitely gives off Widows vibes! Right down to I
constantly kept wondering if Moss was one of the actresses from Widows.

Yeah. That's pretty much what P&T say. But there's a great moment when they
have an interview with a woman who takes money to hypnotize people to lose
weight of some such and Penn flips saying something like "Debbie seems like
such a nice lady and all EXCEPT I WANT TO PUNCH HER FUCKING FACE IN" :D

I read the comic. In it, the three women are white (Irish and maybe an
Italian); I can understand why they changed that for the film.

I didn't like the comic enough to seek out the film. BTW the comic had
an ending.

That is pretty much the impression I got. This woman was sppsd to think she
was cresting a rollercoaster every time they answered right but she seemed to
be enjoying it while another woman who thought the men in the audience were
naked was shrieking and hiding her eyes like some sort of ingenuine.

What did you watch?

Two-day catch-up:

THUR:

The Worst Witch (Netflix) - "The Owl and the Pussycat" (ep. #3.5). And
finally a season #3 episode that features Enid and Maud! Meanwhile, the
'B' story focused on second year Beatrice who is now working for Miss
Tapioca as a cook.... The driver of the action was a "Wise Owl"
(basically an owl with magical properties) that Enid summons (in order
to help Maud whose familiar kitty is turning invisible!), and that
Beatrice recovers a feather from.
I like how in this episode, Ethel Hallow has already forgotten her
lesson from the previous episode, and is right back to being mostly
EVOL!!1!

Killjoys (recorded) - "Three Killjoys and a Lady" (ep. #5.3). You know
a Skiffy show is pretty good when it can get you "choked up" about the
"death" of a ship A.I. but this episode managed exactly that. I'm also
releaved that it didn't turn out to be an "it was all a dream!!"
episode like I feared it would.
But it was mostly for naught - while Dutch, D'Av and Johnny escape
from The Lady's captivity, she captures them again by the end, and then
sends them all off to a SuperMax!! prison... Still, in the meantime,
Dutch does come up with an "endgame plan" for how to deal with The
Lady, so, progress... And Khlyen talks a good enough game to keep
himself alive.
Sidenote: No Zeph, Pree, or Delle Sayah & Jaq this epie.

Guidance (recorded off TeenNick) - Ep's #2.10 & 2.11. Just as with
season #1 this ended weak - though, frankly, I think season #2 ended
even *weaker* than season #1 did... :( - including not one but *two*
"time jumps". The first "time jump" tooks us from the dance shooting
aftermath (without properly resolving that scene, IMO) to "one week
later". In the week later time, Alana the guidance counsellor gets the
actual shooter to confess, and gets her mentor, the principal, to
resign when she discovers that he pawned off the original Mr. Ridley
"case" involving Polly to her incompetent predecessor. Then they do a
"six months later" which I think is supposed to be post-grad for an
awkward (and unconvincing) "happy" ending.
It appears for all intents and purposes that TeenNick has ended its
airing of AwesomenessTV stuff, so it looks like I will have to watch
the third season of "Guidance" off Hulu... :/ (It looks like the
first couple of seasons of "Betch" are also on Hulu...)


FRI:

Pandora (recorded) - "Masters of War" (ep. #3). This episode actually
qualified as an "improvement" - in that I was able to actually follow
the action in this one. It also had better guest-stars - Ben Cross
(chewing scenery as the show's 'Big Bad'...) and Johann Urb.
However, the "science" and "space" stuff in this show is still
execrable, and the show is still awful.
Worse - this episode killed off THE ONLY PERSON IN THE CAST ANY OF
US EVEN KNEW. >:/
So I expect the show will get even worse from here.

Wu Assassins (The Netflix) - The first two episodes. This was mostly
set-up, but I'm interested enough to stick with it, and the
"chop-socky" segments are pretty solid (me like-y). I do like how Kai's
(Iko Uwais) trainer to be the Wu Assassin, Ying Ying (Celia Au), is a
total B-word!! ;) Meanwhile, Katheryn Winnick plays an undercover cop
here, though it's unclear what her role will be, and Byron Mann plays
Kai's adoptive "uncle", the head of San Fran's triad, and the 'Big Bad'
of the show.
This show is apparently filmed in Alberta (they give Winnick's
character a line that winks at this), with Calgary(?) unconvincingly
standing in for San Francisco.

The Outpost (recorded) - "The Blade of The Three" (ep. #2.5). The
non-Garret parts of season #2 continue to be decent - in this one,
Gwynn struggles to keep her Kingdom afloat, esp. after declining the
buffon Tobin's marriage proposal, and is only rescued when Elinor
decides she wants "legitimacy" (and thus "power") and uses her own
funds to restart the economy of the Outpost for Gwynn. Talon decides to
keep the new Blackblood, Zed, a secret from Gwynn. And Fred called it -
Naya finally makes a move on Janzo.
However, the Garret parts of this season are literally *killing* the
show. >:/ I can only guess that Andrew Howard wanted off the show
(probably esp. after the production moved to Belgrade), but killing his
character off (esp. with how it was done) was a grievous mistake - at
this point, the only acceptable outcome is Garret's death as well. I am
*really* unhappy with this turn of events.

Deadly Influencer (LMN) - Morgan Taylor Campbell got the correct 'note'
for a role like this, and played it completely
to-the-hilt/over-the-top, which mostly worked here. The problem was
that her character was a *complete psychopath* without any redeeming
qualities, and that makes flicks like this less interesting. Meanwhile,
Abby Ross was decent here, and this must have been filmed before Anne
Dudek did "The InBetween", because her face seemed to be mostly "fine"
here...

All I See Is You (recorded off Showtime Next) - A really weird, mostly
annoying flick. It was mostly well-cast - Jason Clarke, Yvonne
Strahovski, even Danny Huston (and it features Wes Chatham from "The
Expanse" as well!!). But I really don't get the point. :/ P.S.
Ironically, Blake Lively actually looks much better as a brunette than
as a blonde.

Drive Angry (Showtime 2) - I had never seen this all the way through.
For a "low budget actioner", it's actually pretty darn fun. :)


Both:

soaps: DOOL - Hope is starting to make progress into her
"investigation". Stefan confronts Gabi (who doesn't back down). Rex
intends to leave town, as Eric's and Sarah's carrying on is pissing
others off.
GH - They do the "memory transfer" on Franco, but it's unclear
what's happened yet. Shiloh gets arrested again, and this time I think
it's gotta "stick". Cassandra Pierce has given Sasha a really nasty
strain of the flu, but it's unclear what will happen. Lulu freaks out
Willow about Chase's job as a cop.

KILLJOYS / 5x04 / Ship Outta Luck

[The Killjoy trio must figure out a way to breakout from an inescapable
maximum security prison.]

"I was under the influence of a military mind control device. I'm better
now."

"It's possible that you are stuck in a false memory. Have you
experienced loss of time? Nose bleeds? Strange things that you can't
fully explain?"
"Other than this conversation?"

"I love it when men explain things to me."

"I can't believe I sacrificed one of my precious apples for that. Not
only didn't you find out who's behind the hit, but you managed to make
sure every asshole in here wants you dead."
"Oh, it's our process. It looks like we're failing until we don't."

"I honestly thought that we'd be cleaning up pieces of you out of the
floor grids by now."

This episode came with 25 instances of the word "shit," plus the title
reference. Maybe it's just me, but that seems to be a tad excessive. I
don't know why a show with so much fun dialogue (all of the above being
just a relatively small sampling) has to resort to such crudeness on a
regular basis. Beyond that, the story is making progress and the team is
up to six members now, including some glorious (if greasy) hair. So
there's that.

Grade: B

I keep seeing shows that think they're clever by having the woman complain
about mansplaining, and the writers are clearly missing the irony that the
female characters don't have the information the men are now giving them.
