itunes will never delete anything unless you tell it to.

however, if you mistakenly do delete something, you can restore from a

itunes will never delete anything unless you tell it to.
however, if you mistakenly do delete something, you can restore from a
backup and/or redownload apps.

depends on the version of itunes. that changed with itunes 11 and now
it' has install and uninstall buttons and a horrible mess for
organizing the apps.

regardless, you just find the app you want in the app list of the
device, not the main app library, and there will be an option to
install it.

No, apps are removed from the store either by the developer or by Apple.
Most apps that are removed are removed by the developer or because the
developer no longer has an active developer account, some are removed by
Apple for other reasons.

For example, a bitcoin app was recently removed from the store by Apple.
If you had that app it would still be on your device, and you could
still install it on other devices for as long as the app continued to
work. But if you had removed it from your devices AND from iTunes before
Apple removed it from the store you would *not* be able to reinstall it.

Brian, you have by now got a lot of useful replies. Here's what I do (I
have a Mac, so details will be slightly different as you have a PC).

All the apps I purchase are bought on my Mac. They livwe in
~/Music/iTunes?Mobile Applications.

When I syn my iPad I can choose whether or not to install particular
apps. But, beyond that, if there are apps I rarely use (such as a guide
to a foreign city I am not going to visit soon) I just move them to
another folder that I name sensibly. That way iTunes won't sync them
until I move them back to the main folder, but I still have them safe.

Brian, you have by now got a lot of useful replies. Here's what I do (I

until I can clear some space on my iPad. I don't use all the apps on the
iPad and many are useful when I need to use them at some stage. I collected

I can turn them off in iTunes without losing them and put them back, the
kind may make a difference. If they have content that isn't backed up
somewhere you might lose that.

I do have the database Bento with data I have entered so I will be careful
with what I remove. Thanks for the reminder.

I don't think there is anyway of backing up data from Bento as I have a PC

If you manually delete Bento from the iPad, all the data stored in Bento
is deleted from the iPad along with the app.

If you then do a backup to iTunes, that backup will NOT contain any
Bento data, because Bento isn't on the iPad any more. If iTunes
previously had the only backup of your Bento data, then you will
permanently lose all your data from Bento at this point, since the new
backup replaces the old one.

(If an earlier backup made by iTunes had been copied elsewhere, e.g. if
you have something else backing up everything on your computer, then you
could theoretically get the Bento data out of that earlier backup. I'm
not aware of any way of selectively restoring part of an iTunes backup,
so the only easy way to restore Bento and its data in this case would be
to restore everything on the iPad using the older backup, which would
revert a lot of other things on the iPad to an earlier point in time.)

Bento for the iPad has no export mechanism. The only way to get data out
of it is to sync it with Bento for the Mac, which does have a (somewhat
limited) export mechanism. Recent versions of FileMaker Pro can import
data from Bento on a Mac.

As you don't have a Mac, you have no easy way to get data out of Bento
on the iPad, so you must not delete that app from the iPad if you want
to preserve the data it contains.

Since Bento has been discontinued and may turn out to be incompatible
with future iOS updates, you would be wise to start planning some way to

to release Filemaker Pro v.13 this year which claims it will have a
greatly expanded web and iThingy interface. The specifics have not been
announced, but you might want to wait to convert your Bento databases
until you know FMP v.13 won't do what you want.

what they claim they're going to offer and its real import may vary
substantially. Unless one has just a very casual database of a few
things, it might be worthwhile to spend the money on v.14, IF it lives
up to the cagey, veiled hype that Filemaker has been circulating to
their developers.

programme get to find out about it (via a webinar and a prerelease
copy), but any such information is under non-disclosure. FileMaker Inc.

Major developers or partners might get earlier notice, but mere mortals
don't.

If you've seen something claiming what FileMaker 14 will do, it is

Actually a friend of mine who went to the last Filemaker Devcon told me.
He _is_ under an NDA and told me no more, but it's a logical
extrapolation of what Filemaker has been doing. However, as with
anything the company does, the proof is in what actually gets released.

Ah, the developer conference could well cover future directions in more
detail than the developer programme. I've never been to one, as I'm only
a casual FileMaker user/developer and can't justify the time let alone
the fees or international travel and accomodation cost.

It is a pity that FileMaker Inc. doesn't make that sort of information
available (under suitable NDA) to those unable to attend (or maybe they
do and I just haven't found it).

Apple has been doing a better job along those lines with a lot of WWDC
videos being distributed at no cost to members of their developer
programmes who are under NDA.

In any case, even with the changes you suggest are being planned for
version 14, it almost certainly won't help Brian (or other Bento users),
because FileMaker will still be too expensive and complex compared to a
Bento-like database on an iOS device.

I'm also keeping an eye out for Bento alternatives (must have automated
sync to a Mac, so FileMaker is out). I'm trying some specialised ones
for managing particular types of collections, but haven't started
looking for a general purpose and customizable one, as Bento still works
for me.

there won't be a future update since the product is no more.
your copy will continue to work for now, but it may stop working with a
future version of ios firmware and/or ios hardware.

Maybe I should start looking for another Database.
I liked Bento as you could custom it to your own personal use.

Do you know if there is a PC computer updated version of this program and
will it also be an app for the iPod?
I did try Filemaker Pro a few years ago but liked Bento better as it was
easy to use and you could quickly create your own custom database.
