Discussion:
safely removing apps from an iPad
(too old to reply)

I have an 64 Gb iPad2 which has a lot of apps installed on it leaving me
with on about 2 Gb of memory space which stops me from adding more apps
until I can clear some space on my iPad. I don't use all the apps on the
iPad and many are useful when I need to use them at some stage. I collected
a lot of apps when they had dropped to a special price for a few days by
watching for specials over a period of time.

What I need to how is...

1 how do I safety remove an app from the iPad and not completely remove it
from my computer (PC computer) using iTunes as I may want to use the app
again in the future and I've paid for many of my apps?

2 how do I stop the removed app re-installing itself on my iPad every time
I connect my iPad to my computer and use iTunes? I have an iPod touch that
keeps installing apps that I have on my iPad every time the iPod touch
connects to the internet which is not what I want.

3 If I need the deleted app in the future when how do I reinstall it to my
iPad, would I drag it to my iPad using iTunes or download it again from the
store? I don't want to pay for something I had already brought.

I have this fear that if I do something wrong then iTunes will delete all
the apps on my iPad or I may not be able to add a deleted app in the
future.

I welcome your help please.

tap any app and hold until they jiggle, then tap the little x in the
corner. poof, it's gone.

the app is still on your computer and you can reinstall at any time.

you can also redownload apps without incurring any charges since it
knows you paid for it already.

you have it set to auto-download all new apps. turn that off in cloud
settings.

either go to the app store and redownload it (no charge) or connect the
ipad to the computer, select the apps you want to reinstall and then
sync.

itunes will never delete anything unless you tell it to.

however, if you mistakenly do delete something, you can restore from a
backup and/or redownload apps.

To select apps to be reinstalled do I place a tick next to them or some
other way to mark them as apps to be reinstalled?

depends on the version of itunes. that changed with itunes 11 and now
it' has install and uninstall buttons and a horrible mess for
organizing the apps.

regardless, you just find the app you want in the app list of the
device, not the main app library, and there will be an option to
install it.

from the app store again, or add it to the list of installed apps in
iTunes.

No, apps are removed from the store either by the developer or by Apple.
Most apps that are removed are removed by the developer or because the
developer no longer has an active developer account, some are removed by
Apple for other reasons.

For example, a bitcoin app was recently removed from the store by Apple.
If you had that app it would still be on your device, and you could
still install it on other devices for as long as the app continued to
work. But if you had removed it from your devices AND from iTunes before
Apple removed it from the store you would *not* be able to reinstall it.

Brian, you have by now got a lot of useful replies. Here's what I do (I
have a Mac, so details will be slightly different as you have a PC).

All the apps I purchase are bought on my Mac. They livwe in
~/Music/iTunes?Mobile Applications.

When I syn my iPad I can choose whether or not to install particular
apps. But, beyond that, if there are apps I rarely use (such as a guide
to a foreign city I am not going to visit soon) I just move them to
another folder that I name sensibly. That way iTunes won't sync them
until I move them back to the main folder, but I still have them safe.

I can turn them off in iTunes without losing them and put them back, the
kind may make a difference. If they have content that isn't backed up
somewhere you might lose that.

when you sync with itunes, all app data is backed up, including bento,
regardless of mac or pc.

some apps may have additional ways to back up their data, such as via
dropbox, icloud or creating their own mini web server so you can copy
it yourself.

that depends how you restore it.

if it's from a backup, you get your backed up data. this is the ideal
solution.

if you redownload an app, you don't get your data. it's the same as the
first day you used the app.

however, in the latter case, if the app stores the data external to the
device, such as in icloud, dropbox, their own server, etc., then you
just need to link to that service and the data is available.

also, if the app has the ability to export/import data, then you can
save/restore your data that way, but that's something you would have to
do before deleting the app.

If you manually delete Bento from the iPad, all the data stored in Bento
is deleted from the iPad along with the app.

If you then do a backup to iTunes, that backup will NOT contain any
Bento data, because Bento isn't on the iPad any more. If iTunes
previously had the only backup of your Bento data, then you will
permanently lose all your data from Bento at this point, since the new
backup replaces the old one.

(If an earlier backup made by iTunes had been copied elsewhere, e.g. if
you have something else backing up everything on your computer, then you
could theoretically get the Bento data out of that earlier backup. I'm
not aware of any way of selectively restoring part of an iTunes backup,
so the only easy way to restore Bento and its data in this case would be
to restore everything on the iPad using the older backup, which would
revert a lot of other things on the iPad to an earlier point in time.)

Bento for the iPad has no export mechanism. The only way to get data out
of it is to sync it with Bento for the Mac, which does have a (somewhat
limited) export mechanism. Recent versions of FileMaker Pro can import
data from Bento on a Mac.

As you don't have a Mac, you have no easy way to get data out of Bento
on the iPad, so you must not delete that app from the iPad if you want
to preserve the data it contains.

Since Bento has been discontinued and may turn out to be incompatible
with future iOS updates, you would be wise to start planning some way to
migrate your data out of Bento to something which is still supported.
That may require assistance from someone with a Mac who can run the Mac
version of Bento, sync data from your iPad, and then export it from
Bento to something else.

you have something else backing up everything on your computer, then you
could theoretically get the Bento data out of that earlier backup. I'm
not aware of any way of selectively restoring part of an iTunes backup,
so the only easy way to restore Bento and its data in this case would be
to restore everything on the iPad using the older backup, which would
revert a lot of other things on the iPad to an earlier point in time.)
It sounds like Bento needs some extra features added to it. Maybe in a
future update I hope.

there won't be a future update since the product is no more.

your copy will continue to work for now, but it may stop working with a
future version of ios firmware and/or ios hardware.

That sounds like a couple software programs I used to like that I've lost
to "up"grades.

Bento was a Filemaker sub-app. Yes, Bento is dead, but Filemaker is set
to release Filemaker Pro v.13 this year which claims it will have a
greatly expanded web and iThingy interface. The specifics have not been
announced, but you might want to wait to convert your Bento databases
until you know FMP v.13 won't do what you want.

FileMaker Pro 13 was released last December, along with version 13 of
FileMaker Server and FileMaker Mobile.

FileMaker Pro (or FileMaker Mobile) is not a cost effective solution for
a simple personal database, as it costs a few hundred dollars for the
FileMaker Pro application on Mac or Windows, and you need that to create
a database you can use in FileMaker Mobile.

Oops, I meant v.14, or rather actual version #3.7.4 if you follow the
very slow progression of actual features. So I have trouble keeping
their official versions straight. One of these days we might actually
get the editing features of TextEdit in Filemaker text fields. Imagine
that!

Certainly true, but v.14 is supposed to make great strides in web and
iThingy interfaces. The standard warning about Filemaker applies here:
what they claim they're going to offer and its real import may vary
substantially. Unless one has just a very casual database of a few
things, it might be worthwhile to spend the money on v.14, IF it lives
up to the cagey, veiled hype that Filemaker has been circulating to
their developers.

Based on the timeline of recent updates, the earliest I'd expect to see
FileMaker 14 is early 2015, and it is more likely to be late 2015.

Correcting my own post: the iPhone/iPad product is called "FileMaker Go"
(FileMaker Mobile was several versions ago and a substantially different
product).

Cite? I've never seen any public announcement from FileMaker Inc. which
even acknowledges the existence of an unreleased version, let alone what
features it might have.

Shortly before the release of a new version, members of the developer
programme get to find out about it (via a webinar and a prerelease
copy), but any such information is under non-disclosure. FileMaker Inc.
even go as far as deleting any discussions on their developer forum
which mention the existence of the new version.

Major developers or partners might get earlier notice, but mere mortals
don't.

If you've seen something claiming what FileMaker 14 will do, it is
rumour, speculation or a wish list.

I could tell you, but them I'd have to kill ya. It's right there in the
NDA.

Actually a friend of mine who went to the last Filemaker Devcon told me.
He _is_ under an NDA and told me no more, but it's a logical
extrapolation of what Filemaker has been doing. However, as with
anything the company does, the proof is in what actually gets released.

Yes, I'm well aware of that having been party to several NDAs.

Ah, the developer conference could well cover future directions in more
detail than the developer programme. I've never been to one, as I'm only
a casual FileMaker user/developer and can't justify the time let alone
the fees or international travel and accomodation cost.

It is a pity that FileMaker Inc. doesn't make that sort of information
available (under suitable NDA) to those unable to attend (or maybe they
do and I just haven't found it).

Apple has been doing a better job along those lines with a lot of WWDC
videos being distributed at no cost to members of their developer
programmes who are under NDA.

Yep.

In any case, even with the changes you suggest are being planned for
version 14, it almost certainly won't help Brian (or other Bento users),
because FileMaker will still be too expensive and complex compared to a
Bento-like database on an iOS device.

I'm also keeping an eye out for Bento alternatives (must have automated
sync to a Mac, so FileMaker is out). I'm trying some specialised ones
for managing particular types of collections, but haven't started
looking for a general purpose and customizable one, as Bento still works
for me.

Expanding on my previous parallel followup (I got the name wrong for the
iPad product).

FileMaker Pro is a Mac/Windows application. Version 13 was released last
December: it requires Mac OS X 10.7 or later, or Windows 7 or later.

FileMaker Go is the corresponding product for the iPhone, iPod Touch and
iPad. Version 13 was released last December: it requires iOS 6 or later.

FileMaker Pro costs US$329 (NZ$439), and is required if you want to use
FileMaker Go. FileMaker Go is free.

In short, there are two ways of using FileMaker Go. In either case you
need FileMaker Pro to create the database.

(a) Copy the database from FileMaker Pro to FileMaker Go. This allows
you to use the database on the iPad even without an Internet connection,
but there is no mechanism to sync changes between the iPad and computer
- you can copy the entire database, but you have to keep track of where
it was most recently modified (or write scripts to handle that).

(b) Host the database on FileMaker Pro or FileMaker Server (even more
expensive but more robust and scales to more clients) and access it from
FileMaker Go either over a local network or over the Internet. The
database only exists in one place (on the server) so no syncing is
required, but the computer needs to be running FileMaker Pro/Server any
time you want to be able to access the database, and it can only be
accessed from the iPad while the iPad has a WiFi or cellular connection
which allows a connection to the server.
