Discussion:
I'm considering buying the Smart Wifi Instant Pot. What do I need to know?

I've heard about the accessiblity problems with the new app for this version of the Instant Pot. What's the issue? Are there unlabeled buttons or spots where the app is entirely unusable by a VO user?

I wonder how long it would take for the company to fix their app. Is it being developed by the same people (I'm assuming it's the actual company) who developed the first app for the bluetooth model? Has anyone contacted the company about the issues they're facing with the new app?

Basically, I'm trying to figure out if I should get this new model. I've never had an Instant Pot, so I'm a completely new user. It's such a steal at $90 right now! I'm so tempted, but I'm also worried about being able to use the thing when I get it.

Thanks,
Ari

It is an excellent price which is what drew me and got me to order one. Also the accessibility isn't horrible. If you are determined to be able to use this instant pot you could probably do it. With some exploring around and a little guesswork it is most likely useable by a blind person.

You do want to be sure to get the app that says instant pot and not the one that says instant pot smart cooker. That was my first mistake and the root of most of my frustration. With the correct app, the pairing is pretty straightforward and works much like the pairing of amazon's echo devices.

Another thing to be aware of is the number of buttons on the front of the pot. There are two virtical rows of six buttons and two virtical rows of three buttons. I can't tell you what most of them do as I didn't really get that far with my pot before packing it back in the box. I can tell you the pairing button is the top button in the second column from the left. You will want to press that one when the app prompts you and hold it for a couple seconds.

If you do decide to get an instant pot, I wish you the best and many happy hours of cooking.

Just a little input from a bluetooth user and perhaps something to keep in mind for those dealing with the wifi app issues.

While the bluetooth app is completely accessible, the reason why I think I at least and other blind owners of this device like it so much is not necessarily because every button and function is accessible, but the fact that particular information such as temperature, time remaining and keep warm time are easily reviewable. Along with the ability to set the timers and start/stop the process.

All the recipes and presets like beans, meat, rice, etc. with maybe the exceptions of yogurt and saute really are kind of superfluous since you’ll more often than not be going off of recipes that will simply require the manual function. Even then, saute is a turn on/ turn off type of deal. I’m guessing that’s a physical button they left on the new hardware design.

Indeed, I think Instantpot recognized this reality with the newer models by doing away with a lot of those preset buttons since everyone basically just uses manual

So, I have no idea on how the app for the new wifi model is structured and since I’ve already got the bluetooth model, I have no need to get the wifi version, but if this basic info of time remaining/keep warm and the ability to set the cooking/saute time is VO accessible, the other stuff is really kind of ancillary and not essential to using the pressure cooker.

There are a ton of resources out there with an endless supply of instant pot recipes, tweaks and hacks that if you can access this info, you’re going to be fine.

IF this info in the app is in fact not VO accessible, then yeah, complain day and night to Instant Pot

So, what is the link for the new app. I have the Bluetooth app and agree
that it is very accessible. I would be happy to play with this new app with
my Bluetooth Instant pot and see how accessible it is. I also hear that
this new app has many more recipes and will happily look them over to see
how usable they are. The Smart cooker app really doesn't have that many.

Just search for Instant Pot. You will get the Smart Cooker and Instant
Pot apps as a result of that search. You want the app called Instant
Pot for the new cooker although it appears to support the old one as
well.

Just a little input from a bluetooth user and perhaps something to keep in
mind for those dealing with the wifi app issues.
While the bluetooth app is completely accessible, the reason why I think I
at least and other blind owners of this device like it so much is not
necessarily because every button and function is accessible, but the fact
that particular information such as temperature, time remaining and keep
warm time are easily reviewable. Along with the ability to set the timers
and start/stop the process.
All the recipes and presets like beans, meat, rice, etc. with maybe the
exceptions of yogurt and saute really are kind of superfluous since you'll
more often than not be going off of recipes that will simply require the
manual function. Even then, saute is a turn on/ turn off type of deal. I'm
guessing that's a physical button they left on the new hardware design.
Indeed, I think Instantpot recognized this reality with the newer models by
doing away with a lot of those preset buttons since everyone basically just
uses manual
So, I have no idea on how the app for the new wifi model is structured and
since I've already got the bluetooth model, I have no need to get the wifi
version, but if this basic info of time remaining/keep warm and the ability
to set the cooking/saute time is VO accessible, the other stuff is really
kind of ancillary and not essential to using the pressure cooker.
There are a ton of resources out there with an endless supply of instant pot
recipes, tweaks and hacks that if you can access this info, you're going
to
be fine.
IF this info in the app is in fact not VO accessible, then yeah, complain

It is an excellent price which is what drew me and got me to order one. Also
the accessibility isn't horrible. If you are determined to be able to use
this instant pot you could probably do it. With some exploring around and
a
little guesswork it is most likely useable by a blind person.
You do want to be sure to get the app that says instant pot and not the one
that says instant pot smart cooker. That was my first mistake and the root
of most of my frustration. With the correct app, the pairing is pretty
straightforward and works much like the pairing of amazon's echo devices.
Another thing to be aware of is the number of buttons on the front of the
pot. There are two virtical rows of six buttons and two virtical rows of
three buttons. I can't tell you what most of them do as I didn't really get
that far with my pot before packing it back in the box. I can tell you the
pairing button is the top button in the second column from the left. You
will want to press that one when the app prompts you and hold it for a
couple seconds.
If you do decide to get an instant pot, I wish you the best and many happy
hours of cooking.

I've heard about the accessiblity problems with the new app for this version
of the Instant Pot. What's the issue? Are there unlabeled buttons or spots
where the app is entirely unusable by a VO user?
I wonder how long it would take for the company to fix their app. Is it
being developed by the same people (I'm assuming it's the actual company)
who developed the first app for the bluetooth model? Has anyone contacted
the company about the issues they're facing with the new app?
Basically, I'm trying to figure out if I should get this new model. I've
never had an Instant Pot, so I'm a completely new user. It's such a steal
at
$90 right now! I'm so tempted, but I'm also worried about being able to use
the thing when I get it.
Thanks,
Ari

Where did you get the idea that the new app support the old cooker? I don’t think it does. I actually had it on my phone for a little bit. It did not seem to have any way of connecting to my Bluetooth pot, which isn’t surprising.

I haven't done this yet, but when I downloaded the app for the wireles
version, I see that the BT version is one of the options you could
select for setting up. So some of us might want to do that and report
back because I totally agree with the comments here about much of the
app being superfluous at best. In fact, while i think the BT app is
very useable, the app layout is pretty wonky because the buttons are
out of order. They make much more sense on the pot itself. But once
you know htis, it's a snap to use. So since the BT can be set up in
the new app, that might be fun to try and I will when I have a bit

Indeed, I think Instantpot recognized this reality with the newer models by
doing away with a lot of those preset buttons since everyone basically just
uses manual

Mary,

I downloaded the newer Instant Pot app yesterday even though I don't have one and was taken through a setup where you first indicate your Instant Pot model and I'm pretty sure I heard the Bluetooth model as being one of the choices. They next prompted me to set up an account and since I don't even have one of the pots, I bailed and uninstalled the app.

When you begin the setup process you must choose which product you are
setting up. The BT model is the last model on the list. Every pot
they've made that has any connectivity is on that list and some others
which I htink you set up for the recipes only. But the BT model is
there so I plan to see if it allows me to set it up.

manual function. Even then, saute is a turn on/ turn off type of deal. I'm
guessing that's a physical button they left on the new hardware design.
Indeed, I think Instantpot recognized this reality with the newer
models
by
doing away with a lot of those preset buttons since everyone basically just
There are a ton of resources out there with an endless supply of
instant
pot
recipes, tweaks and hacks that if you can access this info, you're going
to
be fine.
IF this info in the app is in fact not VO accessible, then yeah, complain

the accessibility isn't horrible. If you are determined to be able to use

You do want to be sure to get the app that says instant pot and not

straightforward and works much like the pairing of amazon's echo devices.
Another thing to be aware of is the number of buttons on the front of the
pot. There are two virtical rows of six buttons and two virtical rows of
three buttons. I can't tell you what most of them do as I didn't
really
get

I'm so tempted, but I'm also worried about being able
to
use
the thing when I get it.

But once

Just a little input from a bluetooth user and perhaps something to
keep
in
mind for those dealing with the wifi app issues.
While the bluetooth app is completely accessible, the reason why I
think
I
at least and other blind owners of this device like it so much is not
necessarily because every button and function is accessible, but the fact
that particular information such as temperature, time remaining and keep
warm time are easily reviewable.

Exactly, the Instant Pot Bluetooth is listed in the available choices for Instant Pots. How much it connects and all that I don't know since I don't have one. I also had downloaded the app, I set up an account and went through the entire setup to the point where I would have had to connect to the network the new Instant Pot WiFi creates and then of course I had to stop. Everything was very accessible for the setup. I am not saying that I believe the app is wonderful since many people have reported there are issues, but I'm just saying the setup is accessible and I had posted a few weeks ago that people who had the Bluetooth model could maybe give it a try since it was listed.

Where did you get the idea that the new app support the old cooker? I don’t think it does. I actually had it on my phone for a little bit. It did not seem to have any way of connecting to my Bluetooth pot, which isn’t surprising.

Just search for Instant Pot. You will get the Smart Cooker and
Instant Pot apps as a result of that search. You want the app called
Instant Pot for the new cooker although it appears to support the old
one as well.

So, what is the link for the new app. I have the Bluetooth app and
agree that it is very accessible. I would be happy to play with
this new app with
my Bluetooth Instant pot and see how accessible it is. I also hear
that this new app has many more recipes and will happily look them
over to see how usable they are. The Smart cooker app really doesn't have that many.

I haven't done this yet, but when I downloaded the app for the
wireles version, I see that the BT version is one of the options you
could select for setting up. So some of us might want to do that and
report back because I totally agree with the comments here about
much of the app being superfluous at best. In fact, while i think
the BT app is very useable, the app layout is pretty wonky because
the buttons are out of order. They make much more sense on the pot
itself. But once you know htis, it's a snap to use. So since the BT
can be set up in the new app, that might be fun to try and I will
when I have a bit more time.

Just a little input from a bluetooth user and perhaps something to
keep in mind for those dealing with the wifi app issues.
While the bluetooth app is completely accessible, the reason why I
think I at least and other blind owners of this device like it so
much is not necessarily because every button and function is
accessible, but the fact that particular information such as
temperature, time remaining and keep warm time are easily
reviewable. Along with the ability to set the timers and
start/stop the process.
All the recipes and presets like beans, meat, rice, etc. with maybe
the exceptions of yogurt and saute really are kind of superfluous
since you'll more often than not be going off of recipes that will
simply require the manual function. Even then, saute is a turn on/
turn off type of deal.
I'm
guessing that's a physical button they left on the new hardware design.
Indeed, I think Instantpot recognized this reality with the newer
models by doing away with a lot of those preset buttons since
everyone basically just uses manual
So, I have no idea on how the app for the new wifi model is
structured and since I've already got the bluetooth model, I have
no need to get the wifi version, but if this basic info of time
remaining/keep warm and the ability to set the cooking/saute time
is VO accessible, the other stuff is really kind of ancillary and
not essential to using the pressure cooker.
There are a ton of resources out there with an endless supply of
instant pot recipes, tweaks and hacks that if you can access this
info, you're going to be fine.
IF this info in the app is in fact not VO accessible, then yeah,
complain day and night to Instant Pot

What do I need to know?
It is an excellent price which is what drew me and got me to order one. Also
the accessibility isn't horrible. If you are determined to be able
to use this instant pot you could probably do it. With some
exploring around and
a
little guesswork it is most likely useable by a blind person.
You do want to be sure to get the app that says instant pot and not
the one that says instant pot smart cooker. That was my first
mistake and the root of most of my frustration. With the correct
app, the pairing is pretty straightforward and works much like the
pairing of amazon's echo devices.
Another thing to be aware of is the number of buttons on the front
of the pot. There are two virtical rows of six buttons and two
virtical rows of three buttons. I can't tell you what most of them
do as I didn't really get that far with my pot before packing it
back in the box. I can tell you the pairing button is the top
button in the second column from the left. You will want to press
that one when the app prompts you and hold it for a couple seconds.
If you do decide to get an instant pot, I wish you the best and
many happy hours of cooking.

I've heard about the accessiblity problems with the new app for
this version of the Instant Pot. What's the issue? Are there
unlabeled buttons or spots where the app is entirely unusable by a
VO user?
I wonder how long it would take for the company to fix their app.
Is it being developed by the same people (I'm assuming it's the
actual company) who developed the first app for the bluetooth
model? Has anyone contacted the company about the issues they're facing with the new app?
Basically, I'm trying to figure out if I should get this new model.
I've never had an Instant Pot, so I'm a completely new user. It's
such a steal
at
$90 right now! I'm so tempted, but I'm also worried about being
able to use the thing when I get it.
Thanks,
Ari

I have had the app named instant pot for quite a while and never found it
really useful and never found a place to connect an instant pot to it. I
can only assume that this one is the same? I'm going to go back in to it
and have a look around. Thanks much.

A few weeks ago, Rick posted that he had some friends who had this device, and such things as the time remaining and the temperature or not accessible for voiceover. So unless there has been an update for the app which has made those things accessible, the very things you kind a want to be able to check on were at that time not accessible. As for the recipe part of this thing, I certainly never use the recipes program into that section of the app four my Bluetooth pot, but there aren’t very many. This one is supposed to have a lot more, and the whole cooking process is programmed out. So it could be useful for people who don’t want to spend their time rummaging around cookbooks and lists etc. But if it doesn’t work, that’s not so great.

There are a ton of resources out there with an endless supply of instant pot recipes, tweaks and hacks that if you can access this info, you’re going to be fine.
IF this info in the app is in fact not VO accessible, then yeah, complain day and night to Instant Pot

The happy ending still beckons, and it is in the hope of grasping it that we go on.—Annie Proulx
Thanks,
Ari
