Michigan State Research VP Stephen Hsu Resigns After Pressure over Research on Intelligence

Michigan State University Vice President for Research and Innovations Stephen Hsu was forced to resign this week over his research on intelligence. Over 800 faculty members and students signed a petition that called on the university to remove Hsu from his position over his research. Although Hsu has been forced out of his VP position, he remains a member of the Michigan State faculty.

According to a local news report, Michigan State University Vice President Stephen Hsu announced his resignation on Saturday in response to a campaign by students and faculty for his removal.

Breitbart News reported last week [see article below] that faculty circulated a petition that argued that Hsu’s research on the alleged biological basis for intelligence made him unfit for a leadership position.

Prior to his resignation, Hsu argued that the campaign for his removal was reflective of the growing threat to academic freedom at American universities and colleges.

“The Twitter mobs want to suppress scientific work that they find objectionable. What is really at stake: academic freedom, open discussion of important ideas, scientific inquiry. All are imperiled and all must be defended,” Hsu wrote.

In a tweet posted over the weekend, Hsu explained that he is reluctantly resigned from his position at the request of the university’s president. Hsu noted that he will return to a standard faculty position.

In a statement, Michigan State University President Samuel Stanley Jr. offered a weak defense of the “exchange of ideas” before suggesting that Hsu was removed to demonstrate the university’s commitment to complying with the demands of faculty and students.

“I believe this is what is best for our university to continue our progress forward. The exchange of ideas is essential to higher education, and I fully support our faculty and their academic freedom to address the most difficult and controversial issues. But when senior administrators at MSU choose to speak out on any issue, they are viewed as speaking for the university as a whole. Their statements should not leave any room for doubt about their, or our, commitment to the success of faculty, staff and students.”

Michigan State Research VP Stephen Hsu Faces Calls for Termination over Research on IQ

Students and faculty at Michigan State University are calling for the removal of Stephen Hsu, the university’s vice president for research and innovation, over his research on intelligence. Hsu has fired back at students and others calling for his dismissal: “The Twitter mobs want to suppress scientific work that they find objectionable. What is really at stake: academic freedom, open discussion of important ideas, scientific inquiry. All are imperiled and all must be defended.”

According to a local news report, Michigan State University’s Stephen Hsu is facing calls for his termination over research he conducted on intelligence at the outset of his career.

Hsu was criticized as far back as 2013 for research he conducted on the relationship between race and intelligence for his doctorate dissertation. Yong Chan, research director for the racial justice website ChangeLab, condemned Hsu in 2013 for accepting funding from the Chinese government to conduct research on the biological basis for intelligence.

“Even though mainstream science has pretty much scrapped the notion that race has any kind of biological basis long ago, that hasn’t stopped [Hsu] from trying to link intelligence with race and getting a billion and a half dollars for research based in China,” Chan wrote.

Hsu is also facing criticism for promoting a 2019 study that suggested that there is no racial disparity in rates of police shooting.

A petition with almost 800 signatures has called on Michigan State University to fire Hsu for violating “university values.”

“The concerns expressed by the Graduate Employees Union and other individuals familiar with Hsu indicates an individual that cannot uphold our University Mission or our commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Given this discordance with university values, Stephen Hsu should not be privileged with the power and responsibility of recruiting and funding scholars, overseeing ethical conduct, or coordinating graduate study.”

“The attacks attempt to depict me as a racist and sexist, using short video clips out of context, and also by misrepresenting the content of some of my blog posts. A cursory inspection reveals bad faith in their presentation,” Hsu wrote last week in a statement. “The accusations are entirely false – I am neither racist or sexist.”

Hsu argued that social justice groups work to suppress research when they find its conclusions objectionable. “The Twitter mobs want to suppress scientific work that they find objectionable. What is really at stake: academic freedom, open discussion of important ideas, scientific inquiry. All are imperiled and all must be defended,” Hsu added.

A petition supporting Hsu, with about 1,500 signatures as of this writing, addresses Michigan State President Samuel L. Stanley. According to the letter in support of Hsu, “To remove Hsu for holding controversial views, or for inquiring about controversial topics, or for simply talking to controversial personalities, based on the number of people demanding he be removed and the intensity of their demands would be to capitulate to a pre-enlightenment approach to the academy – and to incentivize the exclusion and ostracism of minority positions. It would also set a dangerous precedent, inconsistent with the fundamental principles of modern enlightened higher education.”

Oh yeah. I was chuckling at Reddit the other day because the usual
types were calling to shutter Fox News again, and I almost wrote back,
"Yes, our progressive world will never be achieved until all dissenting
voices are silenced." (Though didn't because I'm not interested in
getting banned there.)

But it's funny how these idiots bleet "Dissent is patriotic", until
it's "dissent" they don't agree with, and then they want those f*ckers
silenced, or dead.

Yes, Virginia, there is a sanity clause. And it decrees that "third
rails" exist for academicians as well as for politicians. Ironically,
this researcher's quality is called into question for me by the simple
fact that he was unable to grasp that simple fact.

Did they? Well...they lied.

"In 1995, he became an assistant professor at Yale University before
moving to the University of Oregon in 1998, where he became a full
professor of theoretical physics and Director of the Institute of
Theoretical Science. Hsu's research has focused on a number of areas in
particle physics and cosmology, including phase transitions in the early
universe, the ground state of quark matter at high density,[6] black
holes[7] and quantum information,[8] minimum length from quantum
gravity,[9] dark energy,[10] and quantum foundations.[11]"

He wasn't doing any research into the biological basis of anything. He
has no more knowledge concerning biology, sociology or anthropology than
I do. Out of his rarified field of expertise, he's just some schmuck who
likes the idea that Chinese people are the most intelligent people on
Earth.
