I see where Berkshire Record Outlet has restocked several Simon Barere CDs on the APR label, including a couple of discs recorded live at Carnegie Hall . I have no Barere in my collection - are any of the APR discs worth buying? If not, are there some other Barere discs available that are must-haves?

Try the disc with Blumenfeld's Etude for the left hand, the live
recording he made in 1947.

Yes!

Except APRs , "Simon Barere / The Last Recording Sessions" .

http://www.amazon.com/Simon-Barere-Last-Recording-Sessions/dp/B00005RTT1/ref=sr_1_7?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1351841638&sr=1-7&keywords=barere

But ... his last sessions were of uneven quality.

Sorry, cant speak to the APR's, but there are several reviews of those
APR cd's at Amazon-US below.

I have 1 Barere cd, the Pearl below. Perhaps I did not listen closely
enough , but beyond the technique, not much moved me or inclined me to
purchase others, although the repetoire may be the problem.

on the APR label,
Quite a few years ago, my local public library had a Barere LP containing the
most remarkable performance of the Liszt "La leggierezza" I've ever heard. I
see the first of the five Berkshire hits on Barere has this piece. I have no
idea if it is the same performance, but I'm going to grab it pronto.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Was it live? If so, it was likely the first CD in the Carnegie Hall
series. If not, it was probably the one in the 2CD APR release "The
Complete HMV Recordings 1934-36."

I don't recall - sorry! The library suddenly ditched its LP collection (and
couldn't tell me where they'd gone) quite a few years ago, before I had a
chance to dub the LP to reel-to-reel. The specifics have faded from memory,
but I was just astounded by the lightness and speed of the performance, just
as its name suggests.

My "Complete HMV..." set arrived yesterday, but I haven't had a chance to open
it yet.

Barere was a titan, some of my favorite performances include: Chopin 3rd Scherzo, Rachmaninoff Second Concerto, Liszt Gnomenreigen, Don Juan, Spanish Rhapsody, Concerto 1....
