It was me. Bliss. He was a travel writer and had two families in
Bristol - a week each. I am not sure we even managed a complete
episode. Sky I think.

Ah I hadn't heard of that. I've been watching a couple of Young
Sheldon just now and liked those. I missed Big Bang Theory initially
and we've been watching those so wanted to see him as a child. I love
BBT. Since I played D&D monthly for 21 years as an adult I enjoy the
games bits and have friends a little bit like those.

I tune in to hopefully but am disappointed. I watched Vicious for one
episode and tried a few of Transparent and the one with Jane Fonda and
Lily Tomlin and Martin Sheen and Umbrella. Most of them seem to go
for hackneyed jokes. The Jo Bland one too, a bit depressing.

I listened to John Cleese read his memoir recently. He made some
interesting points about the nature of comedy and the 'football crowd'
effect of the audience. Like me, he had grown up wondering why shows like
'Take it from here' had been so popular when they were not funny at all.
Filled with catch phrases and hackneyed jokes, which are apparently
crowd-pleasers - presumably through the recognition factor - but nothing
original and actually funny.

It's a lazy way of writing but in a large part he blamed the audience.
It is rather like the die-hard fans who go to rock concerts but only really
want to hear the familiar golden oldies, not the new stuff.

OTOH, I'm no fan of the comedy of embarrassment - I found Harry Worth
excruciating as a child - although Fawlty Towers (which he barely mentions)
did it far better than most.

No but not a million miles away. I doubt they were the primary source but
as I say, there were elements: e.g two German teachers on some sort of
exchange visit. Father walks into dining room and sees a jam sandwich
travelling along road in near distance. “There goes the ge*s*a*o he
exclaimed”. Exited hurriedly covered in confusion and not a little
embarrassment.

FT was brilliant, but I can't watch it nowadays.

I still love it. My friend’s husbad got the BAFTA for them but he didn’t
direct them all...or even most iirc?

I guess you're right. :o) I think my fondest memory of her
performances, among many very fond ones, is of Mrs Bennet in the classic
BBC Ehle/Firth production. She was *wonderful*.

She may almost be enough to persuade me to listen to an episode...but
probably not.

I have just staged my Jane Austin show down here* at Pencarrow House. It
includes a dramatised reading from Ch 1 of P&P. I am convinced the lady
who played Mrs B was channelling Steadman. Or, more likely, watched her
performance and copied it! But it was v,g., I admit.

Hold the Sunset may have legs but atm the characters are a bit arch and
lack a chemistry between them. The script is good in parts but rather
immature.

from the emergency trip to horsepiddle. Only now do I realise how serious
it was!

her daughter Anna was around a little more often, appearing in 22 weeks.

though I'd draw attention to the answer that I gave three weeks or so
ago. She had not appeared in the mean time, so it is still correct.

I wonder if the changes of editor affect the stories? We know these work
on short, medium & long term time frames. We know Soc arrived excited by
his coercive control story the ptb had bought into. There must be
questions along the lines of: what would you bring for a new editor.

Given that stuff has to go to accommodate the new plans, I guess all sorts
of events and inhabitants are shelved to make the space. I wonder if Carol
Tregorran would have been so quiet. I wonder if FAL and Justin would have
married? Back along I wonder about the Toby, Pip, Brighton stuff.

Any other ideas, reflections etc?

Yes, I think so. I seem to remember major shifts in story, when SOC
arrived and, again, as soon as he left. At the moment, a month or two
into the new broom's regime, it has a feel that things are shifting. I
assume that at least some of Nic's death, Alistair and Shula's
separation, the pollution and resultant upheavals at Home Farm were
already planned but, probably not all of them at once.
