I am excited =D Let us hope it will be a match worthy of the WC.

I think this could be a good place for me to solve the Owen, Larsson
debate in a positive way. If Owen scores more goals than Larsson in
this WC, I'll donate 100 SEK to the red cross, and eat some humble pie
:-D

Time to leave home. May you all enjoy the match!

SWEDEN ENGLAND

4-4-2 ] [ 4-4-2 ]

Andreas Isaksson Paul Robinson
Niclas Alexandersson Jamie Carragher
Olof Mellberg Rio Ferdinand
Teddy Lucic John Terry
Erik Edman Ashley Cole
Mattias Jonson David Beckham
Tobias Linderoth Owen Hargreaves
Kim Kallstrom Frank Lampard
Fredrik Ljungberg Joe Cole
Marcus Allback Wayne Rooney
Henrik Larsson Michael Owen

Thoughts: Nothing too unexpected from either side, although both NTs
are 'bulking' up a little more in defence. Allback up alongside
Larsson due to Zlatan being out, and no Gerrard means that we go with
Hargreaves as our DM. Not exactly a speedy England side, I would've
liked to have seen with Lennon or Carrick, but we may well see them
yet. Crouch was on a yellow, IIRC, and anyway, Rooney starting gives
us more soul and spunk. Especially spunk.

COME ON ENGLAND!

(Stream-of-consciousness reporting)

Great atmosphere, England supporters in full-voice, and probably full
of Budweiser. ;)

Teams being led out, Beckham looking as serious as I've ever seen him,
my word Robinson and Rio are almost the same height.

Some of those German kiddies are not so small!

Swedish National Anthem.

I've said it before, and though I appreciate La Marseillaise as MMcC
posted recently (whenever THAT scene comes up in Casablanca, I get a
knot in my throat), I happen to think ALL national anthems are
beautiful. Even the Brazilian one, which sounds like a circus tune.

Now God Save The Queen. Crowd sing it before it starts!!

WHAT AN ATMOSPHERE. WHAT A CROWD!

This is a classic World Cup match int he making.

"us" ?

Are you not a USA citizen ? :-/

You should forget your monarchic leanings and embrace republican thought, as
you greeted some Italian lately for being a citizen of a republic on the
issue of the king of Italy involved in a prostitution-drug scandal.

But just in case you're not teasing, do you think a person can ever

Looked really bad, Southgate called said it was medial ligaments, and
no doubt, it had to be. That was disgusting to watch...like Willis
McGahee's injury.

6 months to a year, at best. God willing, it looked A LOT WORSE than

Sigh. Thanks, Daniele.

I am thinking that the England team look absolutely rabid for a goal,
in a kind of "Win one for the Gipper" mode.

Rooney and Lampard seem emotionally willing a goal.

England's semi-torrid start, has settled down. Sweden countering well,
and have even gotten Joe Cole to get an awkward foul in a dangerous

MUCH better by England. I'm surprised Gerard is out. Aren't yellows wiped
out after this round, or do you miss the eighth final if you get two? They
are closer together, passing much more quickly, and Rooney makes a huge
difference.

I'm sorry about Owen--that looked awful--but it didn't look is he was
going to be a great help, to be frank. This will be a stronger side. Too
bad the goal was for Paraguay instead of T & T, we could have had some real
drama.

England looks as if they could beat anybody today. Not would, but could.
I hope Lennon comes on, however.

They should bench Beckham permanently, actually. He moves like a
tractor, and prone of coming inside because he has no speed. England's
attacks have been almost exclusively started on the left. Wait until
the Swedes wised up and shut down Joe Cole, Beckham will return to
pumping diagonal long balls into the box.

HT 1-0 England.

Thoughts: I can barely think. Lots of action, in a vertical type of
game as the Latins say. The loss of Owen seems not to have affected
the England team as much as expected, and I thought that whilst Sweden
of course, play offensively as usual, they weren't up to much even
before the injury to Owen. It's almost as if Sweden are waiting for
something to happen -- a lucky bounce, a cross that connects. I
realise I said they play us intelligently and above all, patiently,
but so far, I think England controlled the match super-efficiently.
Robinson touched the ball only 3 times, none with great urgency. We'll
see.

Please, please post any updates on Owen, should you guys get them.

HT 1-0 England.
1-1Sweden 51' Allback

Sweden ALWAYS have a response. This time a header from a Terry
clearance for a corner. Game on.

Lennon, coming on I believe. England losing the plot if not.

Rooney off, because he was just not doing well due to his injury. But
oh dear me.

Rooney not happy.

Overheard on BBC:

"Southgate says: it's almost as if Rooney's mum has called him in for
his tea"

GERRARD! Covered the goal, and got that sure shot off the line! That
worked out okay then. *gg*

play Carragher in teh middle. Campbell has to be kept off the field at

I respect Carragher for his defensive qualities, but when passing, well,
he's embarrassing. Here, let me turn my whole body because... because..
my hip joints have seized up and I'm unable to move my legs??

He has limitations and gets the job done by sheer determination and
guts. I'd back him over Campbell anyday.

Quite a match. I defy anyone to explain Ericsson's thinking. You need a
goal to be safe (of winning the group), so you remove your only decent
striker. (And please, VB et al, stop whining about Owen. He hadn't done a
thing in the whole WC). Gerard is on a yellow. Granted that turned out to
be a stroke of genius, since SG was single-handedly worth two goals. (By the
way, no one ever answered my earlier question about the T & T game--has
anyone ever seen Gerard score like that with his left foot before?) But
boy, did they miss Rooney. Campbell looked like a 12-year old on that
second goal, completely at sea, no idea whether to go forward or back . ..
sigh.

Crouch also seems just about worthless, and I don't see how England is
going to make it very far with one striker whom they won't even play for a
whole game. It does sound like picking Walton was crazy but is he really all
that's left? I guess so.

Rather astonishing for a soccer nation like England to play the last 35
minutes or so with one striker, Peter Crouch.
