Received a recent Aussie Eloquence 3 CD set with the complete Philips recordings of Jean Martinon (early 1950s)

A Decca Legacy box, probably more around 6 cds or more, would certainly be a nice add on to this collection.

There's no gap in the RCA Classical Navigator issue of the
Martinon/Chicago 4th (1994, coupled with Previn/LSO 1st) but the most

I don't think the Navigator series was released in the US--at least I

It's strange they never fixed that - it was the side-break on the original LP release...there's no reason to leave it in there. It's still the best version - a real knockout, all the way..

No, the Navigator appeared before the 'Sony BMG Masterworks Classic

How frustrating, then, that it got "unfixed" in a later edition!

Was the (excellent) Classical Navigator series, then, RCA Europe only?
This Nielsen issue is one of my favourites, together with a Julian Bream
Spanish compilation and a Mata/Nati Mistral Falla issue.

In fact the (good) Nielsen 4th edit on RCA Navigator can be purchased
for $3.98 on Amazon.com, I see:

I ripped mine to hard disk and then used Audacity to trim movement III from 10:18.6 to the end and trim the silence from the beginning of IV. That sounded about right to me.

That's what I did. And it gives me a backup copy for one of my all-time favorite records. I heard Martinon conduct the Chicago (Rite of Spring and Sessions Seventh, w. premiere). Some of his take on the Rite seems to have resurfaced on the Ozawa-CSO RCA recording.

Exactly what I did (with Audacity). I checked the score and cut the gap
to the appropriate length. But the question remains: If I--not the most
technologically adept person--could do it, why not RCA?

The Chicago recordings also include beautifully played traversals of the two Bizet L'Arlesienne Suites and a crackling performance of the Lalo "Le Roi d'Ys" Overture, with Bud Herseth nailing those fast trumpet triplets near the end. My LP of all this is rounded out with Steven Staryck playing the solos in the Massenet "Meditation." I haven't checked to see if this has made it to CD.

I am surprised that you are not aware that Decca issued all of Jean
Martinon's recordings from 1951-1960 in 2006 in a cap-box as part of their
Original Masters series: 475 7209 (the print is so tiny I am unsure of the
number!). I believe that the entire set is available for download, but you
should be abel to locate a used copy fairly easily.

sounds to me that somebody had one they wanted to get rid of and the others were marked "match the lowest bid" so they were automatically repriced by Amazon to that low value. Then yes the vultures came in and grabbed them either for their own use or for possible resale at a higher price once the other low priced items were gone.

Warner could also include a good many EMI recordings, thought they might be duplicate purchases for many of us: Berlioz, Prokofiev . . .

It was a Columbia issue (not RCA), and the coupling was another work by Casadesus conducted by Dervaux. See https://www.discogs.com/Casadesus-Concerto-For-Piano-Concerto-For-Three-Pianos/release/7918924. The only rationale would have been the wish to include an otherwise orphaned Martinon recording. Fwiw I don't think the work is more than a curiosity.

The Chicago box is worth having. As Bob points out, the French music is very well done, especially the Daphnis second suite, Bolero, and the really characterful, and beautifully played, L'Arlesienne suites. I am also glad that the Lalo "La Roi d'Ys" Overture is included in a thrilling performance, with some sensational playing by Principal Trumpet Bud Herseth. The Bartok Miraculous Mandarin Suite is also terrific (in both senses of the word!).
