If it's not broke then don't fix it right?

The day started well with the arrival of a Talon 42t rear sprocket for
the YZ250. That was soon deployed, though it needed another couple of
links taking out of the chain. If it should prove too high, I can always
go down one or two on the front sprocket.

Next on the agenda was the binding front brake. So I adopted my usual
strategy of getting the caliper off, removing the (new) pads and working
the pistons out, cleaning them up then smearing with a bit of rubber
grease and then pushing them right back in - followed by several cycles
of pump out a few mm and push back in.

They were a bit sticky at first, but after a few iterations they were
both moving in and out nice and evenly. Put the caliper back on, spin
wheel, apply brake - nothing. Much, pumping of the lever failed to
produce any pressure at all. I've been meaning to change the fluid since
I put the new disc and pads on, so this now seemed essential.

At least the two horrible little cross-head screws holding the master
cylinder reservoir cap on came out easily (unlike the lad's YZ85 - but
that's another story). Oh, fuck, the fluid was like Quink. Poped on my
one-man brake bleeding kit and cracked open the bleed nipple on the
caliper and tried to pump the old fluid out. A feeble dribble of ancient
fluid resulted rather than an impressive squirt. I suspect some shite in
the fluid has got pushed back up in to the hole in the reservoir. A
master cylinder rebuild wasn't supposed to be on the agenda. I'll give
it a go with the existing seals (which don't look too bad) and nice new
fluid and I've ordered a new piston and seal kit, but it's looking like
I won't get to Loton on it on Sunday. Which is a tad annoying, because I
was able to ride it OK at Hartland even with a slightly binding brake.

Why don't you rob the master cylinder off a different bike and change
it back when the new parts have arrived and you've rebuilt the
original one?

I've got a ZX10R master cylinder and brake lever assembly you can
borrow but you'll need to blag a reservoir from elsewhere because I
don't have a spare one.

Thought of that, and I even have a spare one that might have done the
trick, but the brake line outlet is at totally the wrong angle for the
YZ line and the banjo thread also seems different. I doubt any of the
Morini/Gilera ones would be suitable either, though at least the Morini
ones also have built in reservoirs which would help. There's always the
option of dragging the Forgotten Error out and notifying a change of
machine.

Thanks for the offer, but if I'm really desperate I may rob the one off
the lad's YZ85. It's very similar, but a bit smaller, which shouldn't be
an issue for a hill climb. But to fit that I'll have to get the cap off,
and the one screw has been terminally maimed by the previous owner.
Still I suppose I could drill the head off and use one of mine.

Very kind but wouldn't a cylinder designed for hyper retarding four pot
calipers rather overwhelm one smallish two pot MX job?

Anyway, I have a brake. Luckily I had recently acquired a complete spare
system (cylinder, line and caliper) off Ebay for the lad's[1] YZ85
because his had various issues, and had already swapped it. So I drilled
the head off the chewed up cap retaining screw, and pinched the master
cylinder off his original system.

I've only ever worked on SO Brembo or Grimeca systems before. I think I
prefer them to this Nissin or whatever. It took an age to get a system
full of fluid and the prospect of bleeding it. I see a Mityvac in my
future.

But it works. Annoyingly, there is still more drag then I would like,
though not binding as badly as it was. So I'll be ordering a caliper
seals kit for hopefully a full fix - perhaps I'll get to play with my
compressor. 350 Morinis were often fitted with the smaller bore 250
master cylinder, so I am hoping to get away with this one for a while.
In any case you only have to use the brakes in four places at Loton.

As to ink. When I first started at Grammar School we still had desks
with inkwells, and out first forays in to italic handwriting were with
scratchy old dip pens. Once to a reasonable standard arrangements were
made for us to purchase the school approved chunky Osmiroid fountain
pen. I kept it for years and used to sign work letters and statutory
notices with it until I lost it. These days I prefer a good fine roller
ball pen if to hand, though most of the time a Bic clone is pressed in
to service.

Oddly, perhaps, they were actually issued to us at junior school, but
banned at grammar school, where fountain pens were de rigeur. There
was an ongoing battle throughout my time there against felt-tip pens,
whose results were all but indistiguishable from 'proper' pens. And

I use a proper fountain pen every day, for just about everything.

As with WUN, ball-points were banned at school for all handwriting work
and I never lost the habit of using a 'proper' pen. Plus somehow, a
really good pen makes writing more of a pleasure, in the same that any
quality tool makes a job better.

I've got a Cross Titanium, which I bought about 10 years ago, plus maybe
half a dozen parkers of varying ages and styles.

I like fountan pens, me.

I do to. Much of what I had to write needed to go through duplciates, so
I bought a rollerball. I'm thinking it's about time for a matching

My mate at school was a left-hander, his fountain pen had a nib with a
slight bend in it because of his inability to use a normal pen like a
normal person does.
No problem writing. It was the smudging thing that Bonwick mentions above.
All overcome by buying a nice Waterman pen rather than the cheapo cartridge
thing my mum got from Woolies. It had a nice plunger arrangement for
refilling rather than a rubber bladder. I think that a much better
regulated ink-flow was part of the secret. My original pen put too much ink
on the page leading to much smudging.

Oh, fuck, the fluid was like Quink.
I have a horrible feeling that I'm one of the few people to understand
this allusion.
Rubbish. I was forced to use a fountain pen at public school. It's right
cunt if you are left handed.
"Oo don't you hold the pen oddly." I have heard it a million times but
it is the only way I can write without smudging and with the letters all
leaning the right way.[1]

[1] I was beaten for being left handed when at school because I couldn't
make the letters slope the right way. A visit from my Mum, a free and
frank exchange of views with teacher and some changes in the way I held
the pen solved that one.

My handwriting was appalling in the 1st & 2nd year. Then, the purchase of a
slender Waterman pen made a difference. I could hold it at a more
comfortable angle and began to write more neatly.

A ladies Parker was the solution for my rather small but perfectly
formed hands. That and the invention of the fibre tip.

So you're one of thos weirdies that kind of hooks their hand round the
pen? I did wonder why on earth people did that because on the face of
it, you're more likely to smudge previous writing.

Yes, you need to keep your hand a line or three above what you have just
written to allow time for the ink to dry as you work your way down the
page. Also to actually see what you have just written, a problem that
right handers simply do not have.

There are a lot more of us than you think - and I manage it without

I never found it a problem to write like the right-handed wierdos though,
even with a nink pen.

Ha, so you ended up with smudged writing and your left hand covered in
ink?

It's no wonder the headmistress at my old primary school used to hit
me on the head whenever I wrote with my left hand, I thought she was
being a bitch but she was actually trying to save me from further
misery.

Oddly, my father manages to be left handed, use a fountain pen and
neither smudge, nor cover his hand in ink.

I was made to write right handed too - I've ended up a bit fucked up in
the handed department. I eat the "wrong way round", use tools in a
whatever hand is nearest way and can do most things competently
ambidextrously.

...but (legible) writing is now right handed only.

They tried to make me use one but I kept breaking the nibs so they
stopped. Left handed fountain pens were ridiculous.

I still used ink at school (and do now) - and Jess did too (cartridges
though) and she's only recently left.

I notice Quink no longer claims it cleans the pen as it writes.

Thanks to the magic ingredient, Solv-X. Yes, I recall that slogan, too.
You used to be able to get it in red, blue, black and even green.

I think just red and blue these days.

<Googles>

Being discontinued for the US, it seems, as well as Quink Red. I suppose
nobody uses it for colouring in the maps any more. Shame.

Still available in cartrdges, it seems, but no real gentleman uses a
cartridge pen anyway.

If it's not broke then don't fix it right?
Tell me about it.

I've just spent half a morning wrestling with two seized screws to get
the alloy console telltale lamp cover off my V11 Sport. The problem
was that half the paint had flaked off, so, in a fit of
over-enthusiasm, I decided to take it off and make a reasonable job of
repainting it rather than just slapping paint on in situ.

Three stainless screws retain it - how hard can it be? Well, very as
it happens, because two of the screws were rather more fondly attached
to the brass bushes they screw into than the bushes were to the
tell-tale lamp cluster plastic.

In order to get at the bushes I had to remove the clocks. One bolt
sheared off the moment I tried turning it. It's just a threaded
pillar, so fixable with some extra work.

Unfortunately, when removing the speedo, I forgot to remove the trip
reset knob, didn't I?

So that's another 'fixable with a bit of extra work' job.

Gah. Hamfisted cunts 'R' us.
