I'm sending some flyers for my show via Bruce Pearce. I thought about hiring
Dennis as an advertising blimp and pasting them all over his ass but I don't
think there is a mooring that could hold him in that Chicago wind. Please
spread the word about my show. thanks.

Really! I've had better frozen pizzas. I always feel jipped,
whenever I've gotten NY style. It's like they rubber stamp the
sauce on and you get one piece of pepperoni per slice.

Give me Chicago style any day-- at least you get your money's worth.

Sigh...You poor, misguided Midwesterners... Let me guess, Dominos and
Pizza Hut are your pizza joints of choice...

Whenever friends visit from "afar", the first thing they want is New
York pizza - especially those who used to live here. Avoid (most) Manhattan
(chain) pizza - family owned borough and suburban pizzerias are the real
deal.

I'd be willing to bet that the "ketchup" of which you speak is light
years better than the sauce you're used to. To me, the sauce is everything.
Seriously, it sounds like you'd prefer Sicilian (thick crust) pizza.
Neopolitan pizza is thin crust. I usually get one slice of each, and I eat
pizza (no lie) 3-5 times a week. I can't get enough of it.

Hey, let's face it, even BAD pizza is good. But if you've never been to
New York, you've most likely never tasted real New York pizza. I've been to
places in Florida that advertised "Real New York Pizza" and it was awful.
Actually, there is a chain that is CALLED "New York Pizza" and it is
expensive and TERRIBLE. Had it in Amsterdam, and when you're in Amsterdam,
EVERYTHING tastes good! ;-)

I had some pizza from a place called "The Silo" last week. I have been
going in there for about 32 years now. It is about 40 minutes north of
Chicago. My Dad who is now 69 used to go there in the 50s.This pizza
has the sauce on top if you want to call it sauce. Actually it is
tomatoes. Very soft tomatoes. Then the cheese and lastly the sausage.
This is a pan pizza but, it is crispy. This is the best pizza i have
ever tasted in my life although I have never been to "Pizzaria uno" in
Chicago. I hear that place is great as well. So what makes a NY pizza
different from everything else?

Well I'll tell you, things are just not the same as the old days
anywhere you go. As far as Chicago's little Italy (Taylor St. as I
know it) It just isn't the same like it was 30-35 years ago.

Back then, all of these Italian restaurants were run by strictly
family. Doubtful if you'll see more than 2 family members running a
Chicago Italian restaurant now days.

Italians have gotten too cheap it appears to hire thier own family
members, (Or 1/2 of them are dead) Now they hire folks who are lucky
if they have a green card. It's the truth.

Getting back to Pizza, Chicago had many darn good Pizza joints in the
50's-through early 70's. Place like Mama Shiavone's, Gennaros,
Blackies Pizza, Home Run Inn. Gennaros is still on Taylor, but no
longer make pizza.

Home run Inn back in the old days was just a small hole in the wall
place with fantastic Pizza. In fact, they still do a very dam good
job with thin crust pizza. Another dynamite place for thin crust
Pizza I used to frequent years ago, was Armands in Elmwood Park (Grand
Ave west of Harlem Ave) They're still there. Salernos used to be good
way back, haven't been there in years.

A good place for thick Pan Pizza Is Lou Malnatis. Unos was good, and
we used to go there a lot when we were kids. They're probably still
pretty good.

Ginos East is Horrible. They should be ashamed of the Pizza they sell.

As one poster said, "the sauce is what makes it". Well, truthfully,
that's a part of it, but really everything needs to be just right to
make a great pizza.

The dough can't taste like a saltine cracker, and cheese, and sausage
needs to be a bit better than what they put on those nasty Tombstone
frozen jobs.

Being Italian, I know what good Pizza is. You just can't designate
pizza as being "New York=Good-Chicago=Bad or vice versa.

Now living in NM, there's only one good Pizza here, and that's the one
I make!

Chris... right on ! I grew up in the bronx and lived in westchester for
years... moved to chicago a few years ago and whenever I visit the NYC /
Westchester area, I try to make it to Sals Pizza on Mamaroneck Ave in
Mamaroneck. Best thin crust I';ve had.

Let's face it - Pizza is a very personal thing.

Chicago style pizza is great...when I want Chicago style pizza.
Gino's East in Chicago is fantastic.

New York style thin? Sure! I tend to like a very crispy crust,
though.

There's a newer local place in town that serves "authentic" Italian
pizzas from a wood-fired grill. The simple margherita - basil, fresh
mozzerella, and fresh tomatoes. Fantastic.

There's a newer local place in town that serves "authentic" Italian
pizzas from a wood-fired grill. The simple margherita - basil, fresh
mozzerella, and fresh tomatoes. Fantastic.
Add some garic and feta, and um boy, now you're talking pizza. Or a pesto
based sauce, too.

Sigh...You poor, misguided Midwesterners... Let me guess, Dominos and
Pizza Hut are your pizza joints of choice...
Whenever friends visit from "afar", the first thing they want is New
York pizza - especially those who used to live here. Avoid (most) Manhattan
(chain) pizza - family owned borough and suburban pizzerias are the real
deal.

Chris, my experience with "New York" pizzas is limited to Pepe's in
New Haven. Terrific pizzas ... though I also enjoy Chicago style
pizza, which is no surprise, since I spent most of my grocery store
bag-boy wages at Lou Malnati's.

Do you know any good pizza places in southern Westchester Co., say
from Hawthorne down to Elmsford, and either west toward Tarrytown or
east toward White Plains? I get out that way for work from time to
time, and wouldn't mind a good NY pizza ... but not enough to haul up
to New Haven.

Sal's Pizza, Mamaroneck Ave, in Mamaroneck. 10 mins east of White Plains. I
live in chicago, but when I visit Westchester, I go to Sal's.

Well, I'm in Northern Westchester and I can name at least 5 or 6 great
places - all within 5-10 minutes of here.

I don't really spend too much time in lower Westchester these days, but
honestly, it's usually a pretty safe bet to go into a non-chain Italian
pizzeria and get a good slice. If the guy behind the counter has an Italian
accent, the odds are in your favor. :-) I CAN say DON'T go to Nick's Pizza
on Mamaroneck Ave. in White Plains, near Sam Ash. It sucks!

goodbye diet. HELLO CHICAGO DOGS! ;-)<
ferchristsakes....not the ones with sauerkraut? that is sixteen kinds of
nasty... I'd stick with the Chicago style pizza ;-]
A Chicago style dog may not have kraut on it. Mustard, relish, pickle,
onions, tomatoes on a sesame seed bun. Anything else, and it ain't a Chicago
style dog.

John P. speaks the truth. I think the kraut dog is NY style. Also, NY
dogs have a strange looking bun. It's slice would be on the side of a
Chicago style dog.
