[RFC PATCH 1/5] net: implement support for low latency socket polling

Adds a new ndo_ll_poll method and the code that supports and uses it.
This method can be used by low latency applications to busy poll ethernet
device queues directly from the socket code. The ip_low_latency_poll sysctl
entry controls how many cycles to poll. Set to zero to disable.

Maybe this bit should be a separate function that the callers can use
(or not) before calling tcp_read_sock(). Then they must take care of
re-locking and revalidating if it decides to poll.

Add the ixgbe driver code implementing ndo_ll_poll.
It should be easy for other drivers to do something similar
in order to enable support for CONFIG_INET_LL_RX_POLL

Users wanting polling support should disable GRO (ethtool -K eth0 gro
off)

BTW, an interesting alternative to netmap would be to map a VF into
userspace. (you would need to pre-allocate DMA memory regions and all of
that RDMA-like stuff)
Unless the hardware has separate event rings for completions, userland
is presumably going to need to be able to rewrite the DMA descriptor
rings. At which point you have to restrict the VF's DMA with an IOMMU,
and might as well let userland allocate and assign DMA buffers
dynamically.

(In OpenOnload this is called 'scalable buffer mode' as an IOMMU allows
mapping more buffers than the on-board buffer table on the SFC9000
family. The catch is that an IOMMU has higher latency.)

This patchset adds the ability for the socket layer code to poll directly
on an Ethernet device's RX queue. This eliminates the cost of the interrupt
and context switch and with proper tuning allows us to get very close
to the HW latency.
This is a follow up to Jesse Brandeburg's Kernel Plumbers talk from last year

benchmarked takes latency for TCP from ~27 usec (37k) to ~14 usec (70k).
At what request/response size does the benefit taper-off? 13 usec
seems to be about 16250 bytes at 10 GbE.

When I last looked at netperf TCP_RR performance where something similar
could happen I think it was IPoIB where it was possible to set things up
such that polling happened rather than wakeups (perhaps it was with a
shim library that converted netperf's socket calls to "native" IB). My
recollection is that it "did a number" on the netperf service demands
thanks to the spinning. It would be a good thing to include those
figures in any subsequent rounds of benchmarking.

Am I correct in assuming this is a mechanism which would not be used in
a high aggregate PPS situation?

It's pretty easy to get a result of 80K+ with a little tweaking, an
rx-usecs value of 100 with C3/6 enabled will get you that.

I will get service demand numbers, but we are busy polling so I can tell
you right now that one core will be at 100%.

The current design has in mind situations where you want to react very
fast to a trigger but that reaction could involve more than short
messages. so we are willing to burn CPU cycles when there is nothing
better to do, but we also want to work well when there is bulk traffic.
Ideally I would want the system to be smart about this and to know when
not to allow busy polling.

My impression was that most bulk use cases are handled exceptionally
well by napi along with some kind of adaptive moderation scheme, esp. if
you compare to cases where napi is not being used.

If you can recommend a specific use case where busy polling will be an
advantage for bulk traffic, I will happily try it out.

I just wanted to say that I like this work a lot.

It proves a lot of things I try to impress upon people who talk about
how RDMA is such a "must have" because the software stack can't
possibly give anything near HW latency.

Obviously such arguments are complete bullshit as is shown by these
changes.

This is exactly the kind of approach that makes sense rather than
trying to put entire TCP stacks in the network card firmware.

Thanks again for doing this work and I look forward to applying
this stuff once all the kinks are worked out. The folks in the
Intel NIC group continue to impress me.

This patchset adds the ability for the socket layer code to poll directly
on an Ethernet device's RX queue. This eliminates the cost of the interrupt
and context switch and with proper tuning allows us to get very close
to the HW latency.

I just wanted to say that I like this work a lot.
It proves a lot of things I try to impress upon people who talk about

changes.
This is exactly the kind of approach that makes sense rather than
trying to put entire TCP stacks in the network card firmware.
Thanks again for doing this work and I look forward to applying
this stuff once all the kinks are worked out. The folks in the
Intel NIC group continue to impress me.
It would really help us to hear opinions on the open issues we listed.

I like this option, because one would assume that the life expectancy of
a napi is rather long. We can just increment the generation id any time
any napi is disabled, which simplifies things.

There could be other configuration changes that would make our notion on
where to poll outdated, for example, someone may have reprogrammed an RX
filter. This is not as catastrophic as a napi going away but still.

Would it make sense to make this a generic mechanism?
One could for example increment the generation id every time the RTNL is
taken. or is this too much?

Otherwise it may be hard to know what operations need to invalidate the
napi reference. It can very well be HW dependent, and then you end up
adding a function for drivers to call to do the invalidation.

Or we can decide that we only care about catastrophic events and only
worry about a napi completely going away and not worry about
configuration changes.(Polling the wrong queue will not kill you, it's
just a waste of perfectly good CPU cycles.)

As long as the incoming packets are able to update the information, who
cares if one packet missed the poll ?

2. How do we decide which sockets are eligible to do busy polling?

How do we provide sane defaults while allowing flexibility and performance?
3. Andi Kleen and HPA pointed out that using get_cycles() is not portable.
4. How and where do we call ndo_ll_poll from the socket code?
One good place seems to be wherever the kernel puts the process to sleep,
waiting for more data, but this makes doing something intelligent about
poll (the system call) hard. From the perspective of how ndo_ll_poll
itself is implemented this does not seem to matter.
5. I would like to hear suggestions on naming conventions and where
to put the code that for now I have put in include/net/ll_poll.h

Notice that the patched kernel gives good results even with no tweaking.
Performance for the default configuration is up by almost 100%,
tuning will get you another 14%. Comparing best-case performance
patched vs. unpatched, we are up 36%.
Machines: each with two Intel Xeon 2680 CPUs and X520 (82599) optical NICs
Tests: Netperf tcp_rr and udp_rr, 1 byte (round trips per second)
Kernel: unmodified 3.8rc6 and patched 3.8rc6
Config: typical is derived from RH6.2, optimized is a stripped down config
Interrupt coalescing (ethtool rx-usecs) settings: 0=off, 1=adaptive, 100 us
C3/6 states were turned on and off through BIOS.
When C states were on the performance governor was used.
Pointers to a napi_struct were added both to struct sk_buff and struct sk.
These are used to track which NAPI we need to poll for a specific socket.
(more about this in the open issues section)
The device driver marks every incoming skb.
This info is propagated to the sk when an skb is added to the socket queue.
When the socket code does not find any more data on the socket queue,
it now may call ndo_ll_poll which will crank the device's rx queue and feed
incoming packets to the stack directly from the context of the socket.
A sysctl value (net.ipv4.ip_low_latency_poll) controls how many cycles we
busy-wait before giving up. (setting to 0 globally disables busy-polling)
Since what needs to be locked between a device's NAPI poll and ndo_ll_poll,
is highly device / configuration dependent, we do this inside the
Ethernet driver. For example, when packets for high priority connections
are sent to separate rx queues, you might not need locking at all.
For ixgbe we only lock the RX queue.
ndo_ll_poll does not touch the interrupt state or the TX queues.
(earlier versions of this patchset did touch them,
but this design is simpler and works better.)
Ndo_ll_poll is called with local BHs disabled.
If a queue is actively polled by a socket (on another CPU) napi poll
will not service it, but will wait until the queue can be locked
and cleaned before doing a napi_complete().
If a socket can't lock the queue because another CPU has it,
either from NAPI or from another socket polling on it,
the socket code can busy wait on the socket's skb queue.
Ndo_ll_poll does not have preferential treatment for the data from the
calling socket vs. data from others, so if another CPU is polling,
you will see your data on this socket's queue when it arrives.

(don't forget to configure INET_LL_RX_POLL and INET_LL_TCP_POLL).
2. The ethtool -c setting for rx-usecs should be on the order of 100.
3. Sysctl value net.ipv4.ip_low_latency_poll controls how long
(in cycles) to busy-wait for more data, You are encouraged to play
with this and see what works for you. (setting it to 0 would
globally disable the new mechanism altogether.)
4. benchmark thread and IRQ should be bound to separate cores.
Both cores should be on the same CPU NUMA node as the NIC.
When the app and the IRQ run on the same CPU you get a ~5% penalty.
If interrupt coalescing is set to a low value this penalty
can be very large.
5. If you suspect that your machine is not configured properly,
use numademo to make sure that the CPU to memory BW is OK.
numademo 128m memcpy local copy numbers should be more than
8GB/s on a properly configured machine.

This is not a criticism of this patch, but it seems that gradually, we have gotten
worse and worse at making network devices generic. There are more and more features
that require special case code in every device driver. This is fine for Intel devices but makes

Should the units really be cycles or, say, microseconds? I assume that
a sysctl setter can do a conversion to cycles so that there's no need to
multiply every time the value is used. (If the CPU doesn't have
constant_tsc or equivalent then this conversion doesn't quite work, but
then low-latency tunng usually includes disabling frequency scaling.)

Also, this should be a per-device (or even per-NAPI-context?) setting.

We are not very sensitive to this setting, anything on the order of your
half round time trip plus a few standard deviations works well.
We are busy waiting, so setting a higher value does not change the
results much.

It does make sense to have this in ms, and it might not matter if the
dynamic cycles mess with the value too much.

BTW on my machines enabling frequency scaling improves performance in
many cases.

Again, I would expect this to depend more on your workload than on the
NIC, so I would keep this global.
User knobs should be as simple as possible.
