Actress Beverly Archer, who played Iola Boylan in Mama's Family and Gunnery Sgt. Alva Bricker in Major Dad, has died. Archer died from natural causes at her home in Santa Monica, California on October 1. Ms. Archer was 64.

Archer's acting career began with her role as Lorraine, Nancy Walker's daughter, in the 1976 ABC sitcom The Nancy Walker Show. She next played Judy Hibbard in the 1977-1978 CBS sitcom We've Got Each Other. In 1984-1985, she appeared in the NBC sitcom Spencer as Miss Spier. Her best known role came on Mama's Family where she played Iola Boylan, the family's prissy neighbor, for four seasons from 1986-1990. She later starred in the 1989-1993 CBS sitcom Major Dad as Gunnery Sgt. Alva Bricker. Archer made guest appearances in many other sitcoms, including It Takes Two, Mama Malone, Family Ties, My Sister Sam, ALF, What a Dummy, Full House, Love & War, Grace Under Fire, The George Wendt Show, Married with Children and Clueless. Her movie credits included Vice Versa, Project: ALF (1996 TV movie) and The Brady Bunch Movie. In addition to her acting roles, she wrote one episode of Mama's Family, one episode of Working Girl and three episodes of ALF.

Ms. Archer had retired from acting in 2000 and moved to Santa Monica in 2001. Survivors include her husband Robert Bernard, who she had married in 1976. She was a very funny lady on Mama's Family and Major Dad. Iola Boylan was an annoying yet sweet character. Her "knock, knock!" catchphrase when she greeted the Harpers was memorable. She will be deeply missed.

Oh yeah, I remember Major Dad. She was easily the funniest thing about
that show. She also played an almost identical character on the
made-for-TV ALF movie, Project ALF.

She was a very recognizable TV face, one of those comedy utility players who could always be depended on to get laughs.

I first became aware of Beverly Archer from her starring role on "We've Got Each Other," an MTM-produced sitcom in the 1977-78 season; it aired on CBS Saturday nights at 8:30 PM Eastern time, in between "The Bob Newhart Show" and "The Jeffersons." (This was the last season in which CBS comedies ruled on Saturdays; "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" had just ended its run, and "The Bob Newhart Show" was in its final season, as was 10 PM anchor "The Carol Burnett Show." By the following season, audiences had migrated to ABC for "The Love Boat" and "Fantasy Island.")

Oliver Clark, who had just spent three seasons in a recurring role as group therapy patient Mr. Herd on MTM's "The Bob Newhart Show," played a nerdy, wacky inventor who stayed home and did the cooking and cleaning, while his equally nerdy wife (Archer) worked for a photographer (Tom Poston). Joan Van Ark played a fashion model who worked in the studio. Jim Burrows was one of the directors, and Jay Tarses was one of the writers.

I don't recall the show being a comedy classic, but it stood out to me at the time because the leads wore glasses and weren't gorgeous. They were more interested in being funny than looking perfect, and as a kid that made an impact on me. And I've enjoyed seeing both Clark and Archer pop up on TV ever since. Very sad to learn of her passing.

Beverly is alive and well 2015. I saw her yesterday and it's not in SM that she lives.

Stop posting and reposting fake deaths about actors. People who do this don't think about the negative impacts this has. Next time, before you click "post", please give pause to the possibility they may be experiencing traumatic events, and that something like this could touch a raw nerve.

Give pause?...would two and a half years of "pause" be enough, you
think?...because you're replying to a thread that hasn't been posted to

I watched Mama's Family as a teenager and even when I was in my 30's, this was so funny to watch how simple life could be if it were real, but it does not happen that way! Vicki Lawrence and Beverly Archer were the best.

Beverly Archer's death was a hoax perpetrated back in early October
2012. Here she is, talking about it later than month:

She's 67 now and still with us.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

I've been a fan of her comic acting--and her lovely angular features!--ever since her late '70s 13-episodes-and-out sitcom "We've Got Each Other". So glad to hear Archer's still not merely alive, but seemingly healthy as well.

But why pick an obscure star like Archer for a death hoax?!?

FWIW, she was born July 19, 1948, according to IMDb and Wickipedia, making her 67.

Once again, BEVERLY ARCHER IS NOT DEAD. She's alive and well. The
original death report from five years ago was a stupid hoax.

Didn't the absence of any mention of her death either at IMDb or in the
Wikipedia article you just referenced register at all?

I came across an old TV commercial recently that featured a young Beverly Archer as the mom. The ad featured the late Alan Sues and serves as a reminder why Peter Pan is rarely portrayed by a male:

I always thought they cast Mary Martin, Cathy Rigby, et al. because they were showing sympathy to the (now apparently burgeoning) transsexual population.

Though admittedly, my favorite Peter Pan is the one played by that teenage (male) punk in that geckoless Geico spot set at an aging class's high school reunion.

Yes, I always laugh when the flying "Peter" is singing "You Make Me Feel So Young" and his shoe rubs up against the oldster from the Class of '65.
