Hello all,

I have captured around 700 photos of Kailasanathar temple, Kanchipuram

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanchi_Kailasanathar_Temple

Captured all the small statues and designs.

Is it okey to to upload them all to commons?
if accepted, will upload as a part of WLM india.

Share your thoughts.

Thanks.

700 pictures! Wow. You deserve a million barnstars, Shrini. I'd say go for
it as long as the pictures are not repetitive. Sometimes it is important to
have multiple angles of the same object though. Just curious if you're
planning to geo-code some of the as well. But, otherwise, I think so many
pictures of a single shrine is still valuable.

Hi Shrini,

This is awesome. It is completely okay to upload them to Commons for WLM.

You can add the coordinate of the temple by adding this template - {{Object
location|12.84230695|79.68967944}}. The coordinate has been retrieved from ISRO
website <http://bhuvan.nrsc.gov.in/governance/culture_monuments>, so its
accurate, I guess.

Best of luck for the competition,

Hi Shrinivasan & Bodhisattwa,

The idea of uploading the images to Commons is good, but for WLM it’ll be
bad.

As a previous co-organiser of the event and being part of judging team, I
won’t suggest this. It becomes tedious for the first round of filtering.
Going through the same set of images ~700 times will consume time and
resource.

My suggestion will be to upload & tag good clicks, which you think are good
for WLM and rest to Commons.

Regards,
Kiran

Hi Abhinav and Kiran,

I hope we can manage this year.

Also Abhinav, of course it adds value. I come from a community which has
been working for documentary photography of heritage for a long time and we
understand the value of such photographs a lot.

Thanks for the concern though,

Dear Shrini,

Greetings. I still remember your earlier contributions for WLM. They were
fantastic.

Great that you had enough time to click every statue and really I'm sync
with Subha for a barnstar.

Regarding uploading them for WLM, i see WLM more as a competition among
Wikimedians rather than seeing it as an only opportunity to upload
monumental photos.

You are always free to upload them anytime but I strongly agree with Kiran
having been jointly associated and still associated since 1st WLM in India.
700 images might burden jury. You'll know the pain only when you process
them. First round is tiring and irritating.

Jury is exciting only after round two where you get to see beautiful images.

Shrini, I leave it to you to decide. I would have preferred to upload only
those images which I feel is competitive, not only nationally but also
internationally. Rest all, I can upload anytime.

Thanks and hope this helps.

Karthik Nadar

Thanks all for the great comments.

I shoot those pics few months ago.
Filtering and improving them itself a huge task and demanding more
time and effort.

I was postponing that task due to various reasons.

WLM announcement gave me some encouragement to work on this.

Thats why asked this question.

Started processing them and improving my GIMP skills.

I agree that 700 pics from a single person for a competition is a kill.

I will upload them all to commons and add only top 10 pics to WLM.

Hello Shrini,

Thanks for positive reply. Glad you considered our suggestion.

And good luck with the competition.

@Bodhisattwa - It’s good that you’ll be able to manage. Even we have
managed it in the previous WLMs, the concern was effective use of
resources. You’ve 1 month for the competition, 15 days / 1 month for
filtering /judging and another 1 week or so for the international
submission, considering all these, the process of making it faster matters.
Based on that I suggested.

Regards,
Kiran

pictures of all the small statues and designs. So this looks like a real
detailed documentation of the temple. Hats off to Shrinivasan.

I have processed around 350 photos and added to a flickr album

https://www.flickr.com/photos/tshrinivasan/albums/72157699459704301

Will add remaining on around 10-15 days.

Hope we can move to commons from flickr.

There may be few duplicates.
Will do more filtering before sending to commons.

Share your thoughts on is it okey to send these kind of pics to commons.

I am still wondering on how to give name and descriptions to all of
these,as I dont know the names.

Thanks Srinivasan for sharing these pictures. Search for some library
reference and you will be able to give name and description to the
pictures.
It is good that Bodhisattva is confident but don't get over-confident also
in anyway. Even uploader is taking suggestions here.
If you don't mind Bodhisattva can I ask what are your experiences in
handling national level photography competition? Why are other affiliate
also not interested in this competition? Why ownership limited to two?
Where is Telugu, CIS & WMIN?

Greetings Jayantilal,

It is good that Shrini is taking suggestions, and as far as I can see,
Bodhi's comment is also a suggestion on what he thinks, but no pushing.
Everybody has a "first time" to do things. However, I am sure that Bodhi,
along with other Wikimedians, has enough experience and expertise to handle
things.

Also there is no such thing as ownership for such matters. The community
itself holds the ownership. Bodhi, and the rest of all who are there, are
only the organizers, who are making things possible for WLM to happen in
India. If you feel that something is going wrong about the project, please
point that out, the organizers will be happy to correct that. It is not the
case of same of set of people or an organization doing it every time. In
2016 it was organized by some, 2017 by different people, 2018 by a another
set of Wikimedians, and next year, anyone can take the lead to organize. In
the same way, this year these people have taken the lead.

Krishna C V.

Hi Jayantilal,

Thanks for your mail and for your concern.

First of all, I am not over-confident. I know about my own limitations very
well. But, also I have complete trust in the organizing team, in which I am
also part of. The team is working very hard to get every job done within
schedule. Plus, I am not pushing Shrini for anything. I just said, we can
manage and sort the images if they are uploaded for WLM, as almost every
details has been planned thoroughly by the team. Of course, it is his
choice to upload or not.

Secondly, regarding experience, no one is born with full experience right
from the beginning. As Krishna rightly said in the previous mail, everybody
has a "first time" to do things. Personally, I guess, I have been in the
movement for quite a long time, but I am still learning everyday and
gaining experience from any event or project, where I have been
participating, that includes WLM also. I hope, the same is also true for
the whole team.

Thirdly, I heard it from you for the first time that other affiliates have
no interest in this competition. If that is so, then it is very
unfortunate. But fact says otherwise. CIS-A2K is providing the prize money;
WMIN members and community members have provided their inputs; CIS-A2K,
Telugu community and others are working on the Wikidata entries of the
monuments; maybe Telugu, Punjabi and Bengali communities will organize
photo-walks soon; Tamil community has created their list of non-ASI
monuments for photo-documentation this year etc.

Fourthly, we never claimed ownership of anything. I have no idea, what you
are talking about. This year, no one came forward to actively organize the
event in India till last week of July, so we decided to take the burden of
organizing it, otherwise there could have been a high chance of India not
participating this year. If someone came forward to organize it, then we
could have concentrated on other priorities.

Best,
Bodhisattwa

Terrific job Shrinivasan! Kudos to you. As you have mentioned that you
have taken photos of all the small statues and designs, I think it will be
a valuable asset for Commons and other projects. I would suggest you to
upload as part of WLM and also keep them in a separate additional category
of the Kailasanathar temple. And add as much description as possible for
the images.

Hello all,
I have captured around 700 photos of Kailasanathar temple, Kanchipuram
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanchi_Kailasanathar_Temple
Captured all the small statues and designs.
Is it okey to to upload them all to commons?
if accepted, will upload as a part of WLM india.
Share your thoughts.
Thanks.
