The Sydney Morning Herald ("SMH") of 16 August 2006 reports the death
of Lt-Col Neil Gordon Macarthur-Onslow, ED, at "Tiltilli", Ulladulla,
New South Wales on 14 August 2006; he was 76.

"Second son of Maj-Gen Sir Denzil Macarthur-Onslow [died 1984] and [his
first wife] Elinor, of Dumfries, Scotland [died 27 September 1979; SMH
29.9.1979]. Husband of Gina, father of Airlie Hawley and Duncan
Macarthur-Onslow (deceased), grandfather of Phoebe and Charles
[Hawley]. Funeral at St Mary's Anglican Church, Birrell Street,
Waverley, NSW, 22 August 2006".

The late Lt-Col Macarthur-Onslow was in remainder to the Onslow
baronetcy of 1674, presently held by the 7th Earl of Onslow. His
paternal grandfather, Francis, was the fifth son of Capt the Hon.
Arthur Onslow, RN, who married Elizabeth, heiress of the wealthy
Macarthur family (who founded the Australian wool industry); he in turn
was great grandson of Lt-Col George Onslow, MP, first cousin of the 1st
Earl of Onslow, and great grandson of Sir Arthur (1624-1688), the 1st
Baronet.

Lt-Col Macarthur-Onslow's only son, Duncan, died in Egypt, 25 June
1989, aged 22 (SMH 27.6.1989).

(I note that Burke's has an incorrect death date for his cousin, James
Stuart Macleay Macarthur-Onslow, only son of JWM Macarthur-Onslow; he
died in Brisbane on 8 April 1996, aged 30, according to the SMH of 10
April 1996 - not "March 1996".)

Not a word about his descent from the famous Macarthur I used to learn
about at school, when in Australia?

I did note that Elizabeth Macarthur's family were responsible for the
Australian wool industry - this was one of the things the famous (and
infamous) John Macarthur was credited with. As a Royalty newsgroup
though, I thought it wiser to concentrate on his noble ancestry - the
Onslows - and the fact that Burkes et al will now require a minor
update. Additionally, through Margaret Kynaston, who married an early
Onslow, the Macarthur-Onslows are descended from King Henry III.

I wasn't thinking so much about wool as Bligh and the 'Rum Rebellion'.

Indeed, an interesting early exposition of the exercise of
constitutional powers; Evatt's "The Rum Rebellion" is on my list of
favourite books, along with his "The King and His Dominion Governors" -
a neat pair.
