Discussion:
Blat install question.

I have installed Blat 2.2.2 on a Windows 2000 server (SP4) and I can
run blat just fine as myself (not administrator). I have other
users that log into the same server via Citrix with their own
username/password and the Blat log indicates that Blat is not
installed.

Does each user need to run the Blat install once to work or is there
supposedly a general Admin install that will cover all users that I
missed? I'm just wondering, since many things in Windows 2000 is
User Profile based.

Below is the error message from the log file.

Blat v2.2.2 (build : Feb 26 2004 10:37:13)
Read 10 TO addresses from \\xxxx\xxxxx\Purchasing\STONE.adr
Failed to open registry key for Blat
To set the SMTP server's address and the user name at that address do:
blat -install server username
or use '-server <server name>' and '-f <user name>'
aborting, nothing sent

Thanks!!

Kevin

IIRC Blat will install in HKLM if it can, but if not, it will save
it's info to HKCU. Sounds like that is what it is doing.
Can you log in with rights to make changes to HKLM and run your Blat
install?

If not, you may need to run Blat install for each user.

Tim,

Thanks for the response. I checked and the install information is
saved in HKLM. Any other things to check?

So if you are logged in as you and run
blat -profile
the correct information is listed, but if you are logged in as someone
else, nothing is listed?

And you checked HKLM and the server, etc is listed there, but not
listed in HKCU (for you or the other users)?

Can the other users see the Blat entries in HKLM using Regedit?

Contrary to popular belief, Unix is user friendly. It just happens to

Tim,

I checked the -profile and it has the corrct information for all
users. However, I am calling Blat from a HOST command and it sounds
like there is a problem with that command in Windows 2000.

I noticed that when I test it, it says that there is a login by me,
but when I use the other method I previously described, there is no
login. So, it's like no actual user is HOSTing out, so it can't read
the registry. Also, the registry setting itself has not default
login/password. Should they?

Thanks for your help!

Sorry I confused things with the HOST command. That's another
program's user exit to the operating system. Turns out that was not
the problem.

I did some further testing and have found that the problem appears to
be the fact that I did not enter a Sender in the -install option.
Once I added that, everything took off running.

Now, I'm having problems with the -tf option, but that's a different
post.

Thanks for all the help!!

Are you able to run Blat as an authenticated user of that machine, using the "run as" feature in Windows?

UserID/Password information was not stored in the registry until later versions. If Blat does not need these two options to send mail, there is no need to store them into the registry.
