My old (76) nails are splitting both longitudinally and horizontally (Delaminating). This is recent - never had a problem in the past. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Is their shape changing, as well? Has your diet changed?

My LH and RH I nails seem to be deteriorating at the outside edge, but otherwise no change in shape.

When I've had issues with my nails there's usually been an underlying diet or health issue.
I am *not* an expert or a doctor, though.

I remember these sugestions of my teacher: don't put hands in detergent, wash your hands in cold water, masage nails with organic almond oil after washing hands and avoid washing them too often (use rubber gloves). Also, try suplements of biotin and MSM together for the splitting problem.

If you have any other unusual symptoms, you can consider to have your thyroid checked.

Might not be what we want to do these days. First things first. But I think this is generally good advice, when the world returns to normal.

I've had a longitudinal split in one nail since forever. A little bit of Heathy Hoof every day takes care of it. I don't know whether it would help with a horizontal split, though.

I don't think there is any problem if the hands are clean before you put the rubber gloves, especially to do anything that can need that you wash your hands after. In Spain we use gloves in the supermarket and clean the hands with anti-bacterial liquid before putting them.

I’ve heard that a deficiency of vitamin B7, biotin, can cause that,
although I don’t think that a B7 deficiency is common. Candida is getting
more common, I think. If you have eczema, itchy skin, or flushed skin
anywhere you might want to cut out of your diet any sugar as well as
anything that your body quickly converts to sugar.

Before posting that, I had misread something about biotin deficiency. What
was really written was that a certain symptom of vitamin B7 deficiency is
rare, viz., fatigue. I have no ideas how common the deficiency is.

Thank you for your correction. Appreciated. I think such problems are best solved at their source and, secondarily, locally. With just almond oil, my nails have become very strong. (And a good diet!)

Maybe you're already doing these things, but at the risk of wading through stuff you already know...

Keep nails as short as you can without losing the tone you like. I've shortened my nails quite a bit in the last few years and it helps. The less nail, the lower the chances that wear and tear and accidents will weaken the nail. And you always have newer healthier nail in contact with the string. Everyone's fingertip/nail geometry is different, but experimenting with shorter may help.

Keep nails smooth. I use the micromesh kit from Strings by Mail--you can buy direct from micromesh, but not quite as convenient. I use all the way to their finest grit, which is really polishing. This keeps little nicks from propagating into real cracks.

I also use Healthy Hoof as a moisturizer. I'm sure there are lots of other useful nail moisturizers. I think this helps, although it's hard to know for sure. The idea is that by keeping the nails from drying too much splits aren't quite as bad.

I have what appears to be a milder issue with splitting, but this regime has reduced breakage through accidents and wear and tear. I can still see the delamination lines, but they don't open up and affect the sound when my nails are short enough.

Here's hoping we don't have to relearn how to play without nails at our advanced age.

Switch instruments. I fought splitting for a few years starting about
age 63 (glue, silk, press-on nails, gels, creams, coatings, etc, etc.)
Gave it up as hopeless eventually and switched to the viola da gamba.

At 76, such changes will happen. Sure, experiment with diet and exercise, but it will probably come down to using some kind of brush-on nail treatment to hold your nails together. I've had success with "LA GIRL Calcium Nail Builder." I got the tip from an older classical guitarist who switched to steel strings.

Don't worry about it. At your age well, really our age, nail problems are going to be a fact of life. Just cut the damn things. Who the heck really wants to hear that sharp, harsh, nail-attack sound anyway? That's so 1980's.

Don’t be too worried if you have to change to flesh only. A friend of mine changed and he sounds very nice

If you cover your nails in nail polish and/or acrylic you may be
suffocating your nails. If that's the case, growing out a new set
should help immeasurably. Some nails issues like this indicate high
blood pressure, and may be worth considering going on one of the many
BP reduction medications.
