I'm going to give it a 4. I liked it better than any of the previous 3
stories. This would be a good introductory story if someone missed the
first three episodes.
Several plot twists kept my interest going. The pig turning out not to
be the alien was a good one, and of course unzippering the human shell
to reveal the monster inside was excellent. The Slitheen is a pretty
cool monster, like a bigger, scary ET. Also, the idea that the space
ship crashing was a ruse and that it originated on Earth makes me want
to tune in next week to find out the answers. (As if I wouldn't watch!)
I really liked the confusion at the beginning when Rose turns up back
at home thinking it had only been 12 hours but was in fact way longer.
I thought the reaction of both her mom and Mickey was about right. Can
you imagine being Mickey and having to endure being accused of
murdering Rose?
The Doctor? Well, I don't know if I like this characterization of him,
at least not so far. An alien ship crash lands on earth and he sits on
his hands watching it on TV? Previous Doctors would have barged right
in there or found a way to get next to the action. I can't imagine the
Doctor being satisfied with sitting in Rose's flat watching TV. What
took him so long to decide to take action? Then when the call goes out
for alien experts he is rightly accepted. If it is true, as the story
went, that deep mining of the internet can find out a lot of things,
why didn't the Doctor show up at the crash site and announce, "I'm the
Doctor, and I can help"? Surely UNIT would know who he was. This was a
flaw in the story. I did love how the Doctor immediately took over the
room of experts and made it into his show. This is a consistent quality
of the Doctor that I really like.
Snapping at Mickey when he asked a stupid question was a little bit
harsh. Yes, people ask dumb questions of the Doctor and he sometimes
(TomDoc, JonDoc) put them down, but not so condescendingly as this
Doctor.
Might as well address the farting issue. I wasn't bothered by it in the
least and there is an explanation promised. One criticism would be the
laughing by the aliens that accompanied the act. That seemed
out-of-place, but of course only fueled my curiosity as to why they
were doing it. The line, "Would you mind not farting while I'm trying
to save the world" was a bit over the top but seems like something the
Doctor would say.
All in all, a very entertaining story. Aliens disguised as humans
taking over the seat of British power. It doesn't get much better than
that, plot-wise, does it? And it was nice to have the return of the
cliffhanger.
