OK folks, let's get the pointless "number score with no commentary"
posts out the way in a hurry this week, please. I've still got several
hundred "Lost" posts to read and I really can't be bothered to spend
much time on "hey, I can count to 5" stupidity.

My rating for "Aliens of London": 3 blue M&M's and a Cheeto.

You know, this show is really good. If this episode is one of the worst of
the bunch, I can't wait to see the good ones.

I think they finally found the right balance of humor and whimsy with this
episode. Whereas the stretchy-skin smartass from "The End of the World"
was cringe-worthy, the humor in this episode was much more subtile. The
Doctor wrestiling with the kid over the remote, and the cooking show he was
watchging was hilarious. I'll admit the farting was over the top, but it
did serve as a plot device to point out the aliens to us.

Nice of them to mention UNIT, and to have The Doctor's connection to UNIT
get him a ticket to the inside.

Sarah Jane Smith is supposed to be a journalist... would it have killed
them to have her as one of the reporters or presenters on BBC News 24?

Who was the General? He looked and sounded so familiar, but I can't place
him.

Personally when I watched the UK airings of these I hated the Slitheen
episodes. Aliens of London, WW3 and one later on....thought they were
ridiculous....but they amp right up after this and get superb....

I've read so many negative reviews of this episode from long-time fans
that it is really nice to see something as positive as what you wrote.
As a long-time fan myself, I also enjoyed this episode.

I loved Aliens of London. Partly I think it's because being a two-parter
gives the story a bit more room to breath. But I must admit that even the
single episode stories are truly fantastic from here on in. The only weak
episode for me was The Long Game, but then it's surrounded by brilliant
stuff.

She was a freelance journalist, not a news presenter. Besides, she deserves
more than a cameo, and she will be back before long anyway!

Not sure, but I think he just said "I know those people", meaning that he
recognised them all as UNIT. Incidentally, one of them was wearing a name
badge bearing the name Frost, which I think was a character in some other
media, probably the DWM comic strip.

I think I'd give it a 4. Remember, new fan here, haven't seen the rest
of the series yet, just watching it as it comes on Sci-fi channel.

I did catch glimpses on this group about "farting aliens" and I was
worried, but honestly, it didn't bother me. It kind of scared me. But
I've seen the movie Dreamcatcher at least five times, so that's probably
why. Their laughter scared me, the way it seemed all a big joke to
them, and the comment of "all too human" about the farting was so
condescending, so indicative of no chance of mercy. And the mumblings
about working out the gas exchange indicate that the farting is a
technical problem with their disguises that should be explained next
episode. Which means, they're not perfect, so if they're not perfect in
that way, maybe they're also not perfect in other ways, so maybe we have
a chance.

The way the aliens' eyes blinked sideways also freaked me out. And Rose
and her mom at the beginning, that whole thing made me start crying so I
was emotionally primed to be very involved and worried for the rest of
the episode. And, I don't hate Mickey. I'd be petulant too, in his
situation. Jeez, I get whiney if my boyfriend disappears for a couple
of days, let alone a year.

The only thing I didn't like was how long it took the aliens to reveal
themselves, and how the people just stood around watching instead of
getting the hell out of there.

Rose's mom was locked in her apartment? And I could be wrong but I
don't remember any of the alien experts even trying to open the door.
And if they couldn't escape, they at least could have grabbed some
chairs to use as weapons, or something.

I think she was blocked in; no way out except past the alien.

I agree they seemed to be strangely quiescent.

The Doctor's group had the excuse of being shocked (literally). The others
just didn't know what was happening. Except for the lady MP and Rose. Rose
should have done something.

This is so refreshing! I'm a UK fan who loves the new series, and I
found ALIENS OF LONDON thrilling. Yes, the fart thing was a *little*
OTT, but I'm still enough of a kid to remember when this would have
craesed me up on the floor, as well as being enough of an adult to see
- as you did - that the real scares come from the Slitheen's
atitude of hilarity: they see the conquest of our planet as just one
big wheeze, a joke, a fart-joke even... and that's scary;. because all
that we hold dear and dignified is being drowned out in their alien
minds by a cheap and nasty gag. Condescension, as you say. Spot on.

Even the actor Noel Clarke admits that he played Micky too broad in the
first story, but as time goes on he becomes more and more likeable and
even heroic. The sideays blinking is the sort of thing I would have
obsessed over as a kid, and the whole Mum-Rose trip in AOL is
brilliantly played by the two women - as I mentioned to you a week or
so ago, brace yourself for even deeper emotional reactions as we hit
eps 6/8/and onwards.........

Yes, a bit overstretched, even allowing for 'parallel montage'...
still, the Slitheein in the kitchen is as iconic an image as any in DW,
I believe!

All the explanation in the world won't change them from being what they
were written to be: fart jokes. Pretty lowbrow. I expect (and
appreciate such) from South Park and Malcolm in the Middle, but for some
reason I expected more from Doctor Who. Don't know why, but I did.

Actually, I think it's high time that there were some aliens
outside of "Mars Attacks" that think of invading and subjugating an
entire planet as little more than a teenage prank. Everything is a matter
of relative scale and there are bound to be some civilizations out there
that would view an Earth invasion in those terms.

We're not important.
We're not special.
We're all part of the same intergalactic compost heap.

I'm going to give it a 4. I liked it better than any of the previous 3
stories. This would be a good introductory story if someone missed the
first three episodes.

Several plot twists kept my interest going. The pig turning out not to
be the alien was a good one, and of course unzippering the human shell
to reveal the monster inside was excellent. The Slitheen is a pretty
cool monster, like a bigger, scary ET. Also, the idea that the space
ship crashing was a ruse and that it originated on Earth makes me want
to tune in next week to find out the answers. (As if I wouldn't watch!)

I really liked the confusion at the beginning when Rose turns up back
at home thinking it had only been 12 hours but was in fact way longer.
I thought the reaction of both her mom and Mickey was about right. Can
you imagine being Mickey and having to endure being accused of
murdering Rose?

The Doctor? Well, I don't know if I like this characterization of him,
at least not so far. An alien ship crash lands on earth and he sits on
his hands watching it on TV? Previous Doctors would have barged right
in there or found a way to get next to the action. I can't imagine the
Doctor being satisfied with sitting in Rose's flat watching TV. What
took him so long to decide to take action? Then when the call goes out
for alien experts he is rightly accepted. If it is true, as the story
went, that deep mining of the internet can find out a lot of things,
why didn't the Doctor show up at the crash site and announce, "I'm the
Doctor, and I can help"? Surely UNIT would know who he was. This was a
flaw in the story. I did love how the Doctor immediately took over the
room of experts and made it into his show. This is a consistent quality
of the Doctor that I really like.

Snapping at Mickey when he asked a stupid question was a little bit
harsh. Yes, people ask dumb questions of the Doctor and he sometimes
(TomDoc, JonDoc) put them down, but not so condescendingly as this
Doctor.

Might as well address the farting issue. I wasn't bothered by it in the
least and there is an explanation promised. One criticism would be the
laughing by the aliens that accompanied the act. That seemed
out-of-place, but of course only fueled my curiosity as to why they
were doing it. The line, "Would you mind not farting while I'm trying
to save the world" was a bit over the top but seems like something the
Doctor would say.

All in all, a very entertaining story. Aliens disguised as humans
taking over the seat of British power. It doesn't get much better than
that, plot-wise, does it? And it was nice to have the return of the
cliffhanger.

4.0 out of 5.

The Doctor? Well, I don't know if I like this characterization of him,
at least not so far.
I think you will like his portrayal in Dalek and Father's Day.
When is Dalek and Father's Day this year? I made a promise to my
dad/dalek that I wouldn't forget this time.
Another one for the killfile.

I'm going to give it a 4. I liked it better than any of the previous 3
stories. This would be a good introductory story if someone missed the
first three episodes.
I liked this one better than Rose and The End Of The World, but not The
Unquiet Dead.

It's cool that you like the Slitheen. Alot of people in here didn't.
I'm with you though.

I think this new series is showing the Doctor a little more
realistically than the classic series did, which is probably why he
didn't just barge in.

Then when the call goes out

for alien experts he is rightly accepted. If it is true, as the story
went, that deep mining of the internet can find out a lot of things,
why didn't the Doctor show up at the crash site and announce, "I'm the
Doctor, and I can help"?
Perhaps because the Doctor suspects that something is amiss and wants to
take a wait-and-see approach before making any sidden moves.

(TomDoc, JonDoc) put them down, but not so condescendingly as this
Doctor.
The new series reflects modern man's lack of manners, I think. In one
sense it's realism; however, in another sense, it simply could be viewed
as the Doctor's newest personality flaws.

I don't think he realized that the government people were aliens. I
think he thought he was talking to a mere mortal who was being crude.
Post by p***@aol.com
All in all, a very entertaining story. Aliens disguised as humans
taking over the seat of British power. It doesn't get much better than
that, plot-wise, does it? And it was nice to have the return of the
cliffhanger.
4.0 out of 5.

I don't know if it is a realistic portrayal of the Doctor. That's my
complaint.

Just after the crash of the alien craft, he's got the sh*t-eating grin
going again, desperate to get to the crash site, going on about "This
is it Rose, first contact by an alien species! This is what I live for,
to be around when history is being made!" Then he decides to watch it
on TV? No, no, no....all wrong.

Yes, watching it on TV is something he'd never have thought of doing before,
but he goes along with it because it was Rose's suggestion. He's learning to
see things from her point of view more.

This guy seems more like a tourist than some of the others, but is
ultimately more than eager to help out when necessary...

I'd have to watch again to post something more coherent, but I really
didn't like the aliens. The farting thing[1] didn't bother me as much
as others, but it got very old very quickly. The fact that they laughed
at their own plans more than Dr Evil and his henchmen was annoying. Too
much emphasis was put on the special effects (especially at the
cliffhanger). The effect was good when it was a simple glow coming out
of their foreheads. The effect was truly awful when the aliens were
coming out of the top of the human heads...

I liked the idea of seeing Rose missing 12 months, but it seemed to go
on a bit too long and became very repetitive. (Perhaps this will
improve on future viewings.)

I think there was too much comic relief and not enough actual drama and
tension to need comic relief from.

Maybe I'll be more impressed after seeing the second episode, but I'm
definately falling into the camp of "non-RTD written episodes are better
than RTD episodes"... and that's after only seeing one non-RTD episode!

[1] And the "it helps the audience figure out who the aliens are"
argument doesn't make sense -- at least not in this episode. We can
figure out who's an alien by the OTT acting, the OTT dialog and the OTT
background music...

If you mean they devoted too much air time on that subject matter, I
agree. I guess it's all a part of character development of the
companion, something that was rarely contemplated in the classic
series.

Comic relief elements I saw--wrestling with the child for the remote,
possibly Rose's mum slapping the Doctor. The farting is not actually
farting, it's something else related to the aliens disguise, so that's
not really comic relief (taken in context).

I'm not dissing the story based on the special effects; the effects are
just one more thing that I didn't like about the aliens. And I hate it
when bad effects ruin the drama (the rat in Weng-Chiang, the "monster"
at the beginning of Andriods of Tara)...

But when I'm watching something today, I'm not automatically generating
a list of the best and worst special effects and ranking it. I'm just
looking at the screen and thinking, "Damn, that computer graphics is
poor..."

But there is something that we should remember - RTD had 8 episodes to
write. Fair enough, that's his decision and I'm glad to see he's
dropped down to 5 in this series. It means some of his episodes can be
a little loose. Also, the other writers are all (with the exception of
Stephen Moffat) re-packaging work that's extremely similar to stuff
they've done previously. Dalek is a rewrite of Jubilee, Mark Gatiss is
constantly writing these Victoriana pastiches, and Father's Day is full
of very Cornell-ish stuff.

I found that RTD's work had a real freshness to it - it feels
unfamiliar. If you like, I like it because it doesn't feel like Doctor
Who.

A lot has been made (bad and good) about Eccelston's un-Doctorish
portrayal of the Doctor. I think it's spot on...because this is a
shellshocked Doctor. This Doctor is the sole Gallifreyian survivor of
the Time War, as far as he knows. He has most likely seen more
planets, races, and most importantly friends die than he's seen in any
of his previous incarnaitons. He's become tougher, grittier...and a
bit more merciless. He's realized that he can't save everyone...and
there are times where you have to let horrible things happen.

That said, it's a tribute to our favorite Time Lord (and to Eccelston)
that he still shows his cheerful whimsical side more often than not.
This is the Doctor maturing...and just from what I've seen of how the
newest Doctor acts, I'd say we'll see an even stronger and more
developed incarnation yet.

Oh, yeah. 3.75 stars for Aliens of London. I'd rate it higher, but the
methane emissions make that dangerous to do...

How many two-hearted aliens who travel in a blue box bigger on the inside
than the outside do you think they know? *
Do they know there are (were) multiple Time Lords? If they do, and
especially if they know there's an evil Time Lord (no, not Romana mark 2,
the other one) then it would be real tough to convince somebody you were the
real deal.

I don't doubt he can easily prove he's an alien, but that wasn't exactly his
goal in the middle of an invasion. :-)

How much does UNIT know? Would any random member of UNIT, 30 years later,
know that The Doctor could look any age and like anyone?
Unit personnel were witnesses to two regenerations and worked with the
doctor directly for several years, so yes.
k, thanks. I haven't seen much of those.

It's just occurred to me that The Master could have had some
post-regenerative fun by setting his TARDIS to police box,
materialising at UNIT HQ and pretending to be a new Doctor.

It would have to have been somewhere between Frontier in Space and
Deadly Assassin, since the later Masters have been body hijacks
(Traken and human) rather than regenerations.

Obviously it's not going to happen now, unless the BBC starts doing
its own version of Missing Adventures.

Not much of a story in itself and there were some pacing problems IMO
(the aliens took way too long to get out of their skin suits), but it's
the opening act of a 2 parter, and it had some really good moments.
Harriet Jones alone was worth the price of admission, and the cheesiness
of the British news commentaries, the paranoid comic booky "watch the
skies" commentaries of the Americans, plus the incredibly shallow
cluelessness of what was going on in in Rose's apartment really made me
wonder why the Doctor has any interest in this species at all...other
than entertainment value. The Doctor's (unshared) concern over the
pig's fear was also a nice touch that highlighted his alienness. I
didn't mind the farting aliens, partly because my sense of humor is
extremely vulgar, but also because it had an explanation and provided a
needed clue as to who they were. I also liked that they looked like
enormous, deformed Teletubbies with sideways blinking eyes.

Not the best episode, but not bad at all.

People need to remember that this was
*one* alien FAMILY causing the invasion--
the actual race may turn out to be quite
benign--if the Doctor encounters them again.

Some of these characters in AOL come back in
future episodes and you won't look at
them in the same light anymore, I promise.

(Was there a big bad wolf chasing that little
piggy down the hallway??)

Upon re-watching, and knowing what the
future holds, I give it a 4.5 or roundabouts
there. Seems campy on first viewing, but
the underlying story is kinda scary after all!

While we are at it, I gotta ask. I know the DVD for this latest of
remakes will be coming out in North America during the summer. But
what about the entire Doctor Who all the way back to the beginning
(excepting of course those episodes which the BBC regretably erased by
mistake or what have you)? Will it be eventually issued over here as
a whole and in toto?

I have a lemming friend that I haven't seen in years but to whom I owe

(such as The Simpsons) but I learned long ago to trust his advice and
so hope to in the fullness of time. And Doctor Who was one of his

it is available and I can finally afford it, I want to watch it all.

Wait ---- Ta Da ---- you can buy the DVD's for the whole series direct from
Canada right now!! See amazon.ca, search for 'Doctor Who 2005'. Price
converted from Canadian dollars is about $75.

But of course you can wait till July 4th for the US version. For some
reason the Canadian DVD package lists a long ship by date. You may want to
see it all on SciFi first, then get the original BBC no commercials with no
cuts version on its US launch date.

All of the Doctor Who classic serials are available on VHS video tapes.
(Except for the reconstructed photo shoot ones.) I believe there are still
some serials which have not been released in Region 1/NTSC format DVDs yet-
but a great number of them have. Personally, I like to order from
whona.com - a mail (oops online) order bookstore which has a really great
selection of Who stuff. In fact they started out specializing on Dr. Who.
Everything is shipped by priority mail, and I've never had them make a
mistake.)

Outpost Gallifrey also has an online store (hooks up to amazon) - by looking
at their lists you can see immediately what's available on DVD in the UK and
the US/Canada region one versions.

A far greater number haven't than have. At the current rate of release
- one every two months - it's going to be over a decade before they're all
available on DVD. (Although the Region 1 releases are six ahead of the
Region 2 ones, due to the Key to Time boxset.)

Check out this site for current availability of Dr Who DVD:

http://www.gallifreyone.com/storeshelf.php?id=dvd

If there's listing for amazon.com or amazon.ca then its out in the NTSC
Region 1 format.

The list is a lot shorter than I realizied. Everything is available on VHS
tapes (that is all the shows still in existance - not the 2nd doctor ones
BBC trashed).

Here's the link for the tapes:

They're working on it. I count 27 releases on my shelf, and am probably
missing a couple. Just out last week was a set with the first three
stories, including the pilot and the first Dalek serial. Gotta get it
from the post office Monday :) The episodes are being restored, and the
market is small, so it'll take time to get everything. We get batches
of thee or so episodes maybe three times a year. Things may pick up if
the new series increases sales of existing DW dvds.

Over here in the UK they've been releasing them on DVD, one story at a time,
for several years now, and I'm pretty sure they're released as R1s at about
the same time.

They're not releasing them as whole seasons, but the individual releases
mean that we get a heck of a lot of extras to every story. The downside is
that it will be about 15 years before they're all released at the current
rate.

I'd rather they cut the crap and have more Key to Time or Star
Trek TOS style releases. The extras are cute but they should really be
on separate disks if not in separate packages entirely.

Ultimately, I want all of this stuff to go into a video jukebox
of some sort. Embedded extras are rather inefficient in that sort of
setup.

The way cable channels are anymore, with those damn popup ads
at the bottom of the screen, I am quite tempted to stick strictly with
DVDs and just toss the dish in the trash.

I could not disagree more strongly. I've seen the episodes a gazillion times
on second-rate VHS. I *want* the DVD releases to be in glorious restored
technicolour with as much "making of..." goodness as can feasibly crammed
into the package without impeding viewing quality, and if that means 3-disc
releases for 2-parters then so be it!

Thanks Dad, that's very helpful and enlightening.

By the way, have you been taking your Geritol regularly?

Been slipping them pills to the one ferret I still have left. He
thinks they are kinda cute, then goes cross-eyed after he swallows
them.

Cheers,

I give it a 4.5.

Last year when I watched it the first time it got a 2.5-3. The farting
humor was too vulgar for my taste. Colored everything that was
magnificent about this story. But once I realized what it was all for,
this one rocked for me.

I loved the character stories. Furthered much more than we've ever seen
in Who and with a nice contemporary feel. Poor Jackie and Mickey.

The mix of horror, humor and spectacle was just right (in all but maybe
that "shaking my booty" scene). Loved the surrealness of the live
newscasts. Anyone who clings to the cable news networks when major
events happen knows what that was like. Especially with the little kid
playing games with the remote.....

Speaking of, here's a factoid for you new viewers. The program the kid
flips to (with the cake baking) is a children's show called Blue Peter.
It's been on for decades, going back to the 60's, and has a long
history of doing Who segments for the little kiddies. It's still doing
them for the new series. And at least one former Who cast regular (a
companion) was a presenter on Blue Peter after Who. So not only is that
bit funny it is an insider joke for fandom.

4 Stars.

Now some content for the Captain of Infinity.

This episode felt much more Doctor Whoish! I really didn't like episode
one, enjoyed episode 2 much more but it felt too short, loved the
setting of episode 3 but disliked everything else about the episode. Up
until this week's show I've really been disappointed by the S/FXs,
they've looked to be of the same standards as the tv work we would have
seen 5 or 6 years ago, really below par but this episode seemed to
improve things on that front. Too bad that shot of Big Ben being smashed
was in some of the promos I accidentally glimpsed, I imagine it would
have been a nice surprise.

I enjoyed the Doctor bringing Rose back a 1 year later and her terrified
mother's reaction, too often on the original series the Doctor would
just drop off his Earthly companions with little to no regard for their
loved ones.

I wish they had made the back bencher womyn one of the Doctor's old
companions, they wold have to have played it slightly different but Sara
Jane, or Jo getting mixed up with the Doctor all these years later could
have supplied a nice moment, not that I don't love what's her face,
she's always good in every film I've ever seen of hers.

The Blue Peter bit was funny, most Americans won't get that.

UNIT makes an appearance!

He's 900 exactly?

HEY SCI-FI QUIT CUTTING OFF THE END TITLES AND THEME SONG!!!

I was slightly perturbed by the design of the inside of the TARDIS, as
others have mentioned it looks too much like the control room from the
horrid tv film, but at the same time I didn't want them using the old
control room but I've started to warm up to this new look, that the
Doctor still has trouble driving the thing is a good thing.

How the actress that plays Rose's mother has avoided being cast on
EastEnders at least once in the last 21 years I can not fathom.

Best part of the episode, the cliffhanger!!! Now that's Doctor Who!!
Every episode should be a two-parter at the very least.

I enjoyed it, but was disapointed to discover it was a two-parter with
no warning. I usually tape those just in case I somehow miss the second
part. And those aliens are simply silly.
Those aliens are AWFUL!!

I like fart jokes as much as the next guy, but I have to downgrade this a
half point again for overdoing it. 3.5. Keep an eye on Harriet Jones and
her running gag - you'll be seeing more of her. *
