Convicted Paedophile Freddy Peats Gets Catholic Funeral
13 Jan: UCAN. Freddy Peats, aged 81, the first person in India to serve a
life term for paedophilia, was given a Catholic burial nine months after his
death, with the officiating priest saying that judgment about his life was
for God, not men, to make ... Peats, a baptized Catholic according to
government records, was buried Jan. 6 at St. Inez cemetery. Twelve people
known to Peats, eight of them jail officials, attended the 15-minute funeral

RECENT ITEMS OF PARTICULAR INTEREST ON GOANET. By Cornel DaCosta.
The increased tension following Iran's decision to pursue the nuclear option
as an inalienable right has generated much uncertainty, especially in the
West. Understandably, Goanet generated several posts on this issue. However,
to placate those who see no relevance of Iran to Goa, Goanet has decided to
reject all posts on this and related Middle East issues forthwith. However,
as a serious commentator, and in the interests of large numbers of Goans in
the Gulf region, I have reservations about such a knee-jerk reaction. In
1990, I witnessed, first hand, the traumatisation and abrupt displacement of
Goans following the invasion of Kuwait and the surrounding area. As there is
a distinct possibility of serious conflagration in the Gulf area once more,
our fellow Goans have more (not less) of a need to know about the tension
there, moderated by Goanet, through the Goan media such as the Goan Voice
and Goanet which are widely and enthusiastically read in the Gulf region.
A post re Goa on Goanet said, ..."it has a semblance of a European
ambience and variously touted as the Rome, Venice, Amsterdam etc of the
East....[but] its unplanned growth and related urban and environmental woes
are becoming the stuff of legend." Do our readers agree with this view?
For many GV(UK) readers, nostalgic about East African days, do read an
interesting Goanet piece on the popular Swahili song Malaika.
