Liszt Transcriptions of Schubert Lieder

It appears that Liszt made a number of transcriptions of Schubert
lieder, not just the Erlkoenig that I knew about. Is there a
recommended recording of anybody doing a decent performance of several
of them?

Bolet recorded a number of Schubert/Liszt transcriptions: die Forelle, der
Müller, Wohin?, Lebe wohl!, das Wandern, der Lindenbaum, die Lerch, auf dem
Wasser, die Post, Aufenthalt, Lob der Tränen, and Erlkönig. It's one of
Bolet's best recordings.

Disagree. Too phlegmatic. Too controlled in the late manner of JB.

Agreed.
Agreed also. He made two recordings. One in the early 70's on
Ensayo, and another on Decca in the late 70's/early 80's. I slightly
prefer the Ensayo performances, but the recorded sound of the Decca is
much better. Also, the Decca recording contains more selections.
Bolet was inconsistent in the studio, especially toward the end, but
these recordings do not catch him either too late or too uninvolved.
I listened to the Decca just a few weeks ago and I enjoyed it more
than I thought I would based on my memory. The Ensayo recordings have
a little more forward momentum while in the Decca he tends to
luxuriate in his own sound a little more. Given the beautiful sound
he brings forth, it's hard to blame him.

The recording date is listed as 1972. Gramophone first reviews it in
1974.

I don't know what is on the Brilliant box bit I think his performances
of these things improved over the years. Basically, I like the most
the recordings he made in 1960, especially the Miller and the Brook.
Sofronitsky said that it wasn't an objective of his to make the piano
sing -- so the way he takes these song transcriptions may be a
surprise to the OP. I expect it's all on youtube.

I think Sofronitsky was an excellent Schubert player. And indeed an
excellent Liszt player.

There is, by the way, a performace of Erlkonig on youtube:

Simone Pedrone is good too.

There's a good one on Naxos, played by Oxana Yablonskaya.
That's volume 1; there's also a second volume in the same series with performances by
Valerie Tryon. They're both good. (Tryon is a particularly fine Liszt player.)
Like Howard's set (aso well played), mainly for those who want all of the
transcriptions, possibly too much of a muchness. Others might prefer selections such
as Bolet's, Sofronitsky's, Berman's, Kissin's.

Berman's repertoire dwindled over the years, but his later recitals (and
recordings) always seemed to include a group of these.

Leslie Howard has recorded them all, including variants. The Naxos is
probably a good lower-priced alternative. Frederic Chiu recorded
"Schwangengesang" (plus The Trout). I used to like Lazar Berman's LP
with one side devoted to the song transcriptions, but haven't seen it in
CD form.

Bjorn Ostlund's Berman Discography has fallen off the internet, but there
is a two-year-old archive of it that's better than nothing. Look under
Schubert for the Lieder transcriptions by Liszt:

I'd also suggest the several that Evgeny Kissin has recorded. He
recorded four of them for his DG Recital disc (1991) and a few more as
fillers for his Schumann Concerto with Giulini on Sony (1993).
