Discussion:
Command Line AV with Milter for Sendmail ??

I am curious what current Slackware users might be using for a free
command line anti-virus that includes a milter that works with sendmail.
I have used ClamAV for years but it seems upgrades never go smoothly.
The change from 0.99.2 to .3 is no exception and I am looking to use
something different that you also do not need a GUI to install and
configure.

I know what most people think of sendmail, but I have no idea what those
few who do use sendmail consider to be decent AV packages.

I'm no longer a Slackware user, but I am quite a happy user of Sendmail
and ClamAV via milter. Going on 18 years now.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I have been using Slackware since
I purchased a CD set from Walnet Creek with the title "Linux Toolkit -
October 1996" that included "Slackware 96". I have however no idea how
long I have actually been using ClamAV. All I can say for sure is that
it has been a long time.

In any case, I was hoping someone would respond with a success story for
a non GUI AV with sendmail milter that is an alternative for ClamAV. It
always seems to be a hassle when you have to update the actual program
version of ClamAV. This time it appears, based on my web research,
that the compile errors I am receiving are the result of the Slackware
gcc version being newer than the one the ClamAV developers use.

A work around could probably be found with some effort this time, but I
have feeling that the folliwing upgade would also producce a problem
that would have to be solved.

Slackware96 was release 3.1.0 of Slackware, released in July of that
year:
Wed Jul 3 14:48:46 PDT 1996
Slackware96 (v. 3.1.0) is released.
New features include the 2.0.0 Linux kernel
(from the ChangeLog).

I actually do not any AV at all as Linux virii are just about
non-existant and I'm not using any M$ product.

Unfortunately in this case this is Slackware server that among other
things serves as a mail server accessed by M$ clients. As a result an
AV with a milter for sendmail, if not mandatory, is highly recommended.

You're welcome.

I also cut my teeth on Slackware 96, I'm guessing in the spring of '98.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. I was quite happily using Sendmail + ClamAV
via milter on Slackware for a LONG time, probably close to eight years.

I am still quite happily using Sendmail + ClamAV via milter.

Never seen these errors, we use clamav and f-prot, we like f-prot because
its fast, really fast, although we've used postfix and amavisd-new for 10
years this year, we used them with milters with sendmail back until 2007
so long agi I forget the milters name...

Based on what I have read, and also from a posting on the clamav-users
list with similar errors, the problem this time appears to be the fact
that the clamav developers are using a relatively old version of gcc.

Unfortunately there was only one post on the clamav-users list about
this and it was completely ignored. Even more unfortunate is the fact
that the list moderators apparently do not look at the list very often.
I have tried to subscribe to the list several times over the past 4 days
without a confirmation or denial notice and postings just bounce with
the message I am not subscribed. There is an AV usenet group but it
appears to populated mostly by trolls.

Thanks for the comments on your success using f-prot. I will have to see
if you need a GUI to configure it. My server is headless except when I
rebuild it every year or two and even then I do not use a GUI. Between
rebuilds I only shell in.

As always when you say something like this, it seems to be the cure. I
just received a confirmation that I am subscribed to the list and the
poster on the error also received a response at about the same time
pointing to a bug report that had been filed. I guess I will be patient
a bit and see what happens.

Headless does not mean that you can't have GUI.

I have used X's remote DISPLAY feature (usually via ssh forwarding) more
times than I care to count. IMHO ssh's X11 forwarding works great.

If you use it frequently and want something more responsive, look at a
VNC X server, and connect a VNC viewer client. That's how I'm typing
this post now.

Interesting. I will have to give that a try. Thanks.
