Overdrawn. Assuming that's a thing there. Now he can't pay to get his
preamplifier back after being repaired.

It was having to buy yet another new tire that did it. ;)

Um, Greg. You need to get the syllables right so it fits with the

Lol...
When I was a teenager, OJ Simpson did commercials for Hertz,
where he ran through an airport. After seeing those commercials,
I had an epiphany. He was running very fast, and I thought of
general relativity. Essentially, the faster one is moving relative to
the movements of other objects (or persons), the more stationary
obstacles become. It occurred to me that if I ran fast enough
through the local shopping mall, that I could run unimpeded by
other persons, as relative to my movement, their future positions
were predictable, as they changed only slightly.

Of course, I had to try it. As luck had it, it worked, and I never made
contact with another person. Back then I was a very fast runner,
and had great reaction time. I quit running several years ago,
resigning myself to being old and fat, and having the knees of an
old man who is fat.

My grandfather worked for Avis most of his adult life, and he retired
from there in the mid 90's. "Hertz" was almost a swear-word, Lol. I
still have one of his AVIS hats, and an AVIS ice scraper. They gave him
a very nice Rolex watch when he retired.

Which $5,000-or-Less Car From the 1970s Would You Choose for Your Dream Garage?

It's time once again to window shop for your dream garage, and once again our selections
will put those basic mechanical skills to good use and keep a decent piece of our automotive
past on the road and in daily service. Check out the latest edition of This or That, where we're
presenting four Driveable Dreams (a feature title borrowed from Hemmings Classic Car)
produced during the 1970s, each with an asking price under $5,000 and currently available
in the Hemmings classifieds. We suspect a few of our dedicated commentators will consider
turning one or two of these steeds into sleepers along the way, or perhaps follow the
path of our Road to Improvement program. Opportunity is knocking!

That's very much an American phenomenon - if it has more than 2 doors
then it's not a fast car. I've only had a few 2 door cars (aside from
utes), I'd rather 4 doors as a rule. Most Australians do too, even for
performance cars.

If you go back to the 50s and 60s, the 2 door coupes had better style
lines than the family sedan.

Some peeps bought two - doors because they had little kids, a two - door was "safer", this was
before child - proof door locks, safety child car seats, and even widespread use of seat belts...

One of our cars was a '65 Plymouth Fury III two - door hardtop in medium - blue metallic, my fave
car when I was a kid...very sleek and sporty...

I miss hardtops...

Australia had/has two door cars of course, similar to old American
iron. Popular for the same reasons as in the US but overall 4 door
sedan muscle cars were always more dominant.

As Ed said, it's mainly a styling thing. I agree, some 2-door cars look

Yes, SUVs have taken over almost every passenger car sector. Part of
the several reasons Australia's car industry died... too slow
responding to consumer needs. We kept on making large, RWD cars with
V6 or V8 engines.

Having said that, the last decade of manufacturing in Australia saw
arguably the best cars ever made in Australia, in fact, world class.
But it was too late and not enough people wanted that type of car.
I bought two examples early last year and both cars have more than
doubled in value within a year, they are highly coveted now by
enthusiasts.

The US was that way for a long time... Detroit was really in trouble in
the late 70's when lots of foreign imports were rolling in. Smaller
than our compact cars, and more fuel efficient during the oil crisis,
not to mention they were cheaper. Detroit was still putting out 6 and 8
cylinders in every vehicle, which was appealing to less and less of the
population.

We got our stuff together at the last minute. You still hear older
USians ripping on "foreign cars"... truth be told, Chevys are made in
Mexico now, and Toyota is assembled in Tennessee state... go figure!

My grandfather worked for Avis most of his adult life, and he retired
from there in the mid 90's. "Hertz" was almost a swear-word, Lol. I
still have one of his AVIS hats, and an AVIS ice scraper. They gave him
a very nice Rolex watch when he retired.
Nice!  It was a very famous ad campaign...

Which $5,000-or-Less Car From the 1970s Would You Choose for Your Dream Garage?
A lot of guys don't like 4 doors, but that red '70 Malibu looks really
sharp!
That's very much an American phenomenon - if it has more than 2 doors
then it's not a fast car. I've only had a few 2 door cars (aside from
utes), I'd rather 4 doors as a rule. Most Australians do too, even for
performance cars.
As Ed said, it's mainly a styling thing.  I agree, some 2-door cars
look
more sleek, especially hard top cars.  Usually the 2-doors had larger,
sportier engines in our domestic cars.  I have a thing for station
wagons, and they just don't look right without 4-doors.

On high school I worked at a grocery store and did deliveries. It was a
Chevy Sedan Delivery. Station wagon with no side windows and the front
passenger seat folded up too. Learned how to drive stick shift on it,
including down shifting (double clutch) to first gear that was non
synchronized.

That's not bad. I much prefer wagons to SUVs or smaller SUVs
(crossovers). I have an '89 Olds Cutlass Cruiser now. Being that it's
a "grandpa" vehicle, it's actually dirt-cheap to insure. Even at my
age, with a couple of dings on my record, I think it costs less than
$200/yr liability -- and that's a couple steps above the state minimum
limit plus uninsured motorist coverage.

Mine was not much different. Had a great job, great people, but the
owner did a few stupid things. The office manager was in his office one
morning and he pissed her off. She said to him "Oh, I'm going to
retire" Of course has asked when. She answered "In five minutes" and
she did.

I had 27 years, she had 26 years. I left a month after. As did another
half dozen people

Before our government ministry was gutted by privatization we used to
have big semi annual retirement parties. By the time I retired we were
totally fragmented. Two of us retired at the same time so they had a
pizza lunch. Here's your hat, what's your hurry?

That was my second last day. After the party I was sent home and told to
come in when I felt like it the next morning to do my biweekly
paperwork... time sheet, expense account etc, hand in my issued gear and
that I could go straight home when I finished. One of the things I
turned in was a laptop computer. It turned out that they didn't even
know I had it. Damn, I could have kept that laptop.

At end of your farewell email, sign your name, hit enter 2 times then
type "+++ATH" It's a fitting last comment to programmers.

No. A Senior Citizens Center here is for seniors to gather and do crafts,
help with their taxes, take dancing lessons, do bus tours, play cards, etc.

With John's four hour erections that aren't dependent upon psychological
factors, he could solve his income issues. All he'd need are a few wealthy

I was hoping to direct him there to take some simple computer courses
and how to fix his pc problems. Even though he claims to have degrees
he's clueless when it comes to maintaining his ancient computers. They
might even be able to offer some cell phone instructions as well.

He'd have to curb his natural inclination to brag about his degrees, his
