Post by Uber-AllahPost by Charles LCan people name what they think is the greatest thing that the Australian
Prime Minister John Winston Howard has done in his 10 years as Prime
Minister?

Closed down the people smuggling rings.
How many years has it been since we have had bogus Arab dipshits claiming
"refugee status" in Australia?
or Pakis like the Baktiaris?
How safe is Australia because of his border control?
Most people think he is the only hope for Australia, Labor being ethnically
compromised. with its ubiquitous party brach stacking
# I tend to agree. The "invasion" of Australia has virtually stopped. What
we need now is a clamp on illegal fishing in Australian waters; and action
is being taken in that regard.
What does 10 years really celebrate - apart from political longevity? Why
does a centenarian get a telegram from the Queen? What does it celebrate,
except survival?
It is one thing to be an astute politician, and another to be a
world-renown statesman. However, if, for 10 years, the populace has been
more-or-less content with its government, then that has some empirical
merit. That the policies enacted may have long-term adverse consequences,
is another matter. For example, how much of our trade deficit is due to
importing goods we once manufactured ourselves?
The Conservative side of politics has the easier task; united by a common
concern for Money, the preservation of the Status Quo is always the easier
option. Radicals tend to diverge and bicker. Yet, conservatism can have
its internal differences, but if it is a case of entrenching Plutocracy,
then the direction tends to be apparent enough, and appropriate policy
indicated.
The "common touch" image of a folksy politician can be seen as somewhat
diminished when a $10,000 per head dinner in Toorak is a celebratory event.
So, on to the next 10 years; unless the govt does something completely
stupid. A minor-issue, me-tooism, Opposition, is unlikely to make a dint in
the govt's electoral prospects - unless able to convince the public that
"it's time" for a change (for what?).
