Binaries Groups Access - Now I will be able to see Checky's pics...

Altopia is such a great NNTP. So professional that it's well worth
the money.

I just received an email from CC and this is what it said:

"Hi. I saw your old posts in altnet.general about not having full access.
Your account is so old it was created back when we had a partial access
concept which didn't include binaries. Since you never converted over, it
was still that way.

"I've now made your login provide full access to all groups we carry, for
the same $6/month."

YAY!!!

So, mystery solved. It wasn't my fine client after all.

Interestingly, note the reason I didn't have Binaries access
while Checky and others did. "My account is so old". LOL
This proves Checky and others are lying about their being
with Altopia longer than Yours Truly - a true Altopia charter
member.

Quite frankly I'm surprised a great American Patriot such as
yourself doesn't feel uncomfortable with freebies, Colonel.

I get a great deal of pleasure being a man of means through
the sweat of my brow so spending my accumulated wealth
with professionals like Altopia serves to further increase
the value of professionalism and makes America Great

Altopia is good.

Have you considered Highwinds? You get 40 connections, 12 years of binary
retention, text retention from 2002/2003ish, and its only 30 dollars a
year. Support is crappy though. Don't like Omicron at all, but it is what
it is.

I get my binaries through Highwinds since Altopia doesn't have high
retention.
I thought of dumping Altopia but I like Chris Caputo and his high support
so I probably won't.

The Colonel is the true winner when it comes to newsservers if what he is
saying is true.

And there's Abavia and Uro Zeto which are relatively new NNTP providers.
If I dump Altopia I'll go with them instead.

I'm sure his completion will also suck
hind tit.

You could get damn near unlimited bandwidth
from a REAL server for much less money than
$72 a year for a shitty text server like Caputo has,
and not have the reputation of posting from a sewer.

Not that you give a flying fuck about your reputation,
Esqueer, it's way too late for that now.

Altopia is such a great NNTP.  So professional that it's well
worth the money.
"Hi.  I saw your old posts in altnet.general about not having full
access. Your account is so old it was created back when we had a
partial access concept which didn't include binaries.  Since you
never converted over, it was still that way.
"I've now made your login provide full access to all groups we
carry, for the same $6/month."
YAY!!!
YAY is right, AND you'll get a whole 4 days
of retention or less from an over priced text server.
I'm sure his completion will also suck
hind tit.
You could get damn near unlimited bandwidth
from a REAL server for much less money than
$72 a year for a shitty text server like Caputo has,
and not have the reputation of posting from a sewer.
Not that you give a flying fuck about your reputation,
Esqueer, it's way too late for that now.
i can see binaries
Are they nasty or nice?
define nasty and nice
nice = prime titties and butt
nasty = old milf whores
i don't know about those things

Newsdemon (the server I'm using) gets
$3 for a 10 GB block, which will last
years for text only.

That's 2 weeks worth with Caputo, right?

Been there, done that. The last block I bought
went extinct because the server folded up shop.

Never again.

I think Mike prolly had some sort of breakdown. He let
Octanews run with no maintenance till it eventually
snuffed it and answered no questions at all. No
goodbyes, nothing. I was a bit peeved at the time at
his silence, but looking back he prolly got the right

I got the impression that he was running it on autopilot
on his employer's bandwidth, then left that gig and had
no access to bring it back up again. All of that could
well be a figment of my imagination, though.

IIRC Shared Secrets went AWOL at roughly the same time?

He got a job at Iphouse, IIRC. Not sure what happened
to freebie biggulp and readfreenews swervers, but the
paid Octanews he to left to die a painful death and
refused to answer any questions even on the iphouse
internal froups. I only bought a small block of him,
more as a thank you for providing the freebie swervers
than anything else, so I didn't lose a great deal. I
was just rather annoyed that he didn't offer any
explanation, just fucked off. I'm not crying over it
like that tight arse Gerk, tho.

I think Robb shut his freebie swervers down before Mike
did. Again with no goodbye, but Robb hadn't sold
anything.

Paying 3 dollars can for a server that will take 6 years to flop is better
than paying 6 * 72 = 432 dollars over 6 years. The trick is to buy a
really cheap block. These days Usenet is a commodity so its really cheap.
During Black Friday you can get a good block for basically next to nothing.

the money.
A mere pittance for a man of means like myself.
And, the cost becomes increasingly pleasing when
it pisses off the likes of you.
LOL
Now fire up your cornhole sock and
talk about my long dead Mother, you
simpleton.

Altopia is such a great NNTP. So professional that it's well worth
the money.

Highwinds (your server) has its own problems with completion.

Altopia has 15 days of binary retention.

My problem with Altopia is how they charge 6 dollars for 2 connections.
The best he can do to make up for the retention is allow more connections.
That will be the reason why I switch, if I do. 30 days of retention or a
significant amount of connections is a must in 2020.

How can I convince newbies to Usenet to pay 72/year for Altopia when they
can pay 40/year for Highwinds and have high retention and download
whatever they want. Heck for 70/year, I can pay for TWO backbones.

The best Usenet server in my opinion right now is Abavia.

Yea? Thanks for the heads up. I'm only using
this one for text now, I just signed up with
them a few months ago with a block for really
cheap, no I mean *really* cheap.

I have snagged a few CD's worth of music from
them also with no problems. It seems most
of this stuff is dying a slow death.

You need an indexer for the good stuff because of DMCA/NTD. Uploaders can
no longer state the name of their files due to copyright, so they make the
names really funky and tell their indexers so people can download it but
copyrighters have no idea what the files are.

I've used many indexers starting with Newzbin, they've
all gone tits up. Which one would you recommend to use
now?
And, BTW, have you any connection to the old readnews
