That's the problem, since BA used it on their ad's it has been thrashed to
death (it's not even a good rendition). Another excellent but 'overcooked
thanks to tv' tune is Sergei Prokofiev's In the Hall of the Mountain King
from Peer Gynt. Oh yes, don't forget to add Pachelbel's canon to the list.

My favourite classical tunes are Vivaldi's 'Four Seasons', Bach's

One of the very first CD's I ever bought was Vivaldi's Four Seasons back in
83. Between that plus Steve Miller and Dire Straits; played all to death. I
only have to hear the opening bars of Spring and I'm running for cover. A
case of overkill for me I'm afraid.

I love Toccata and Fugue recorded in Salzburg cathedral, it just blows away
all my concerns. I don't know much about Bach nor do I have much of his
music apart from his Brandenburg Concertos and the Goldberg Variations. I
really should take the time out to listen to him more. The composer that I'm
trying to get acquainted with is Haydn.

thinking. I mean, apart from the brats' parents, who would actually go to a

Libiamo ne'lieti calici (The Drinking Song) from La Traviata. The
Lesley Garrett/Pavarotti duet is just fantastic.

And the chord sequence copied in millions more tunes! But let's face it,
thinking up that chord sequence wasn't exactly rocket science. Not taking
away from what is a great piece of music.

Talking of things in D (and I've mentioned this in another post elsewhere),
Mozart's Ave Verum Corpus is a stunning piece of music, and absolutely
gorgeous when done with a string quartet (or ensemble of some form) instead
of the more common organ (which can be just as nice, depends on the organ,
but it sounds absolutely perfect with strings).

I'm off as I'm running out of adjectives.

depending on 'as you say' arrangement, conductor and orchestra. Jmho, but
most interpretations really don't do it justice, but that's just my opinion
and taste.

I agree with that. It's a wonderful piece of music. One of my favourites
is a version I have with just a piano playing everything, with a very good
rhythmic feel.

But then again, the full orchestra ones are superb.

So many to choose from. Off the top of my head - Ave Verum Corpus by both
Mozart and Saint-Saens are stunning pieces of work, as is the first movement
of Gershwin's Piano Concerto (particularly the horn duet towards the end).
Pomp and Circumstance March no.1 (Land of Hope and Glory) is great, but
overplayed, as is Jupiter (The Planets) and the Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves
(Verdi), though they've all been played to death a bit. To the more pop
side of things, "World in motion" goes down as the best footie anthem ever
in my book (also happens to be the first ever record I bought, I think -
definitely the first ever single, on 7" vinyl, now unfortunately snapped in
half), with Three Lions a close second. Also the last 2 tracks from
Supertramp's "Even in the quietest moments" album - "From Now On" and "Fools
Overture" are songs that I'll never tire of hearing. I think I'll give a
mention to a song called "Release" by a local band (to me) called The Mighty
590, which would easily make it into my top 20 (maybe top 10) favourite
songs of all time.

There's probably a whole load of stuff I haven't mentioned - there are loads
of beatiful moments in Les Mis and Miss Saigon (Boublil/Schonberg) that
would make it into some form of list - mostly the stuff that hasn't been
played to death like the more well known tunes. And loads more stuff.
