FDA eyes ban on trans fats due to heart disease risk

Trans fats may be on their way out of U.S. foods.

The Food and Drug Administration has announced plans to have so-called
"partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs)," which are the main source of
artificial trans fats in processed foods, to be classified as food
additives. That means they won't be allowed to be used in food without
authorization of the FDA, which may effectively ban the substances.

FDA commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg told reporters Wednesday that the
action is being considered because PHOs are "not generally recognized as
safe for use in food."

The agency will allow 60 days for comments from the public and food
manufacturers, asking the latter how long it might take to reformulate
current products should the determination be finalized.

The agency pointed out some companies have voluntarily been scaling back
the amount of trans fat in foods. But it wants more to be done - an
additional 20,000 heart attacks and 7,000 deaths from heart disease each
year could be prevented by reducing trans fats, according to the FDA.

"These are significant numbers," said Hamburg.

"While consumption of potentially harmful artificial trans fat has
declined over the last two decades in the United States, current intake
remains a significant public health concern," she added in a statement.
"The FDA's action today is an important step toward protecting more
Americans from the potential dangers of trans fat."

The oils behind trans fats can be found in crackers, cookies, frozen
pies, other baked goods, microwave popcorn and other snacks, frozen
pizza, coffee creamers, refrigerated dough products (like biscuits and
cinnamon rolls), ready-to-use frostings, vegetable shortenings and stick
margarine, according to the FDA.

Consuming trans fat has been tied to an increased risk for coronary
heart disease, a condition in which plaque builds up inside the
arteries, which may lead to a heart attack. Previous research, including
a 2002 report from the nonpartisan Institute of Medicine, found a direct
correlation between eating trans fats and increased levels of "bad" LDL
cholesterol, which in turn can increase heart disease risk. The
institute recommended against eating any amount of the fats, finding
they offered no health benefit.

Sure drugs affect others, but unless the drug addict is committing crimes
to get the drugs, they affect their close family, friends. Not society as
a whole. Illegal trawlers, etc, affect large parts of society, that is not

Save the Transfats!
Consuming trans fat has been tied to an increased risk for coronary heart
disease, a condition in which plaque builds up inside the arteries, which
may lead to a heart attack. Previous research, including a 2002 report
from the nonpartisan Institute of Medicine, found a direct correlation
between eating trans fats and increased levels of "bad" LDL cholesterol,
which in turn can increase heart disease risk. The institute recommended
against eating any amount of the fats, finding they offered no health benefit.
Nanny state!
Yeah, people should be as unhealthy as possible, then all of the tax
payers can pay for their care.
Still, what is happening to freedom here?
I have no problem with what anybody does to themselves as long as it
doesn't burden ME. That said, who gets to pick and choose just WHAT
"freedoms"? Should one be free to rape or murder? How about arson? Okay
with that? Before you go on about those involve other people, so does
drug use, alcohol use, tobacco use, trans-fat use, and on and on.
You should have freedom to do pretty much what ever you want, as long as
the rest of us do not have to pay for your actions. Rape, murder. That is
someone else paying for your actions. Drugs? You want to use them? Your
choice. But we, as a society, are not picking up your medical or societal
costs. Your family can not afford to support you, you die.
But drug use DOES affect others. In many ways. Are you okay with
trawlers going to your favorite lake and scooping every living thing out
of it? All negative actions affect someone somehow.
Sure drugs affect others, but unless the drug addict is committing crimes
to get the drugs, they affect their close family, friends. Not society as
a whole. Illegal trawlers, etc, affect large parts of society, that is not
closely connected.
Horseshit! I'd guess then, you'd have no problem with drug addicts
camped in your yard every morning? If you had a business, you'd have no
problem with drug addicts sleeping in your doorway?

We are seeing the grandkids and great grandkids of the 60s hippies now
with a government welfare policy that still supports that lifestyle
although they have lost most of that peace and love stuff.
They are just bums now.

Oh, bullshit! I wonder why all of the addicts are still on Market St. in
SF? If what you said made any sense, they wouldn't be there, they'd be
dead from "drugs and exposure". Next.
Have to admit. Sometimes your logic baffles the mind.
Are the addicts "still on Market St." the same people who were there
10-15 years ago? Do addicts live to the ripe old age of 95?
We are seeing the grandkids and great grandkids of the 60s hippies now
with a government welfare policy that still supports that lifestyle
although they have lost most of that peace and love stuff.
They are just bums now.
That's the point that Bill just doesn't get. Drug addicts, like
population in general re-populate.
Then they can re-depart.

They die, and don't camp anymore.
Die from what?
Drugs and exposure. Next.
Oh, bullshit! I wonder why all of the addicts are still on Market St. in

Interesting statistics from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (USA
numbers):

About 570,000 people die annually due to drug use.

440,000 of them are from diseases related to smoking tobacco.
85,000 are due directly to alcohol abuse.
20,000 are due directly to the use of illicit drugs.
20,000 are due directly to prescription drug abuse.

About 43,000 people die each year in automobile accidents. Half are
alcohol or drug related.

About 32,000 people a year die of firearms related causes. Over half of
them are suicides.

Save the Transfats!

Because SF pays the highest welfare payments in the country. Those street
people get food, medical care, etc. they die sometimes. But mostly the SF
police pick them up and take them to SF General, if they look like health
problem.

Raccoons tearing up the yard? Are you sure it isn't armadillos?
Raccoons get in the trash and eat the fruit off your trees but I have
not heard of them tearing up the lawn.
Armadillos will drill a 2" hole in the ground about 50 times a night
digging up grubs and other tasty lawn critters.
Now when you get gopher tortoises you can really get some damage.
I still put up with them tho.

No armadillos here. The raccoons go after the worms and grubs. My lawn
was being over watered, problem with the sprinkler controller. So very
wet, and I think it drove the worms and grubs toward the surface.

And to think that I used to get a buck and a half for a raccoon skin when I was in high school. Of
course, we spent a lot of time in the woods at night to make our few dollars.

I still put up with them tho.

Just turn on the sprinklers.
Actually the raccoons that are tearing up the lawn presently, might tear up
the sitters.

They are tough on Floritam but bahia seems to recover fairly fast. I
don't think bahia collects as many of the bugs they like either. My
neighbors seem to have worse armadillo damage than I do.
I don't obsess on my lawn tho I don't irrigate so it gets pretty
rough in the spring and winter.

Save the Transfats!
The institute recommended
against eating any amount of the fats, finding they offered no health
benefit.
They die, and don't camp anymore.
Die from what?
Drugs and exposure. Next.
Oh, bullshit! I wonder why all of the addicts are still on Market St. in
SF? If what you said made any sense, they wouldn't be there, they'd be
dead from "drugs and exposure". Next.
Because SF pays the highest welfare payments in the country. Those street
people get food, medical care, etc. they die sometimes. But mostly the SF
police pick them up and take them to SF General, if they look like health
problem.
So they could just as well be in your yard. Next.
Then they infringe on my space, and I have the police remove them. Next.
More come the next day. Next.
And the normal infinite loop arguing by Kevin. Next.

I find it interesting that trans fats were originally supposed to be
the safe alternative to animal fat.
I remember the big PR campaign when McDonalds stopped cooking their
fries in lard and went to TF.

I am still a butter and olive oil guy.

It has to do with how many times they squeeze the olive to get the
last drip of oil out of it,.

Unlike common vegetable oil, olive oil is more like wine in terms of
taste and grading. Where the olives are grown, soil conditions, weather
during the growing season, etc., all affect the "quality" of the oil
when the olives are harvested and the oil is produced.

"Extra Virgin", "Virgin" and ungraded olive oils differ in terms of
their acidity, with premium, extra virgin oils having the lowest acidic
levels.

Garden variety "olive oil" usually has a certain amount of chemically
extracted oil. It is still about the same health wise but it is not
going to have a lot of taste.
Like you say, it is sort of like the difference between a fine wine
and Mad Dog 20/20.

I keep some EV around for things where the oil is an important part of
the flavor but I use the regular stuff when I want some oil but I
don't want the extra flavor that might overwhelm the food I am
cooking. (like fried potatoes and onions)

Taste. Some are good for dipping, some are good for cooking. A good one for dipping is Trader Joe's
'California Estate'. A good one for cooking is Trader Joe's 'President's Reserve Extra Virgin'. The
'President' to which the name refers is *not* Obama.

That's the right stuff. My wife comes from Turkey where olive oil is the
fat of choice. I come from Ireland where the normal food is artery
clogging. But oh so delicious. Egg plant and olives never to be seen

When I worked in the food industry maybe fifty years ago there was
something called the GRAS list. Gnerally Regarded As Safe. No need to
worry about it. I bet that list is a lot smaller now.

I found nothing in the article that referenced the Tea Party

I for one would be happy to see transfats gone.

I'd like to see a good tasting healthy microwave popcorn.

Hypothetical:

The impossible happens and Ted Cruz is elected POTUS in 2016. In the
first few months of his presidency two bills are introduced in Congress
with the full support of Cruz who promises to immediately sign them into
law.

The first is to overturn Roe v. Wade, making abortions illegal.

The second is to reinstate both prayer and teaching of creationism in
public schools.

As a liberal, progressive Democrat, how hard would you be willing to
fight to prevent these bills from becoming law?

Point is the Tea Party crowd are as passionate about their beliefs as
liberal Democrats are about theirs.

There's not much that can be done while such bills were moving through
Congress. If they were passed, though, I of course would support the
efforts of interested parties to file suit in U.S. District Court in the
District of Columbia for injunctions, which I assure you would be
granted. The District Court would find both unConstitutional. Cruz would
appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth District, which would
uphold the District Court. Cruz would try to get the U.S. Supreme Court
to take an appeal. Since both laws would be in violation of settled law,
it is not likely the Supremes would take the case. If they did, they
would find for settled law, and Cruz would again be the fool.

Those sorts of beliefs of course would keep Cruz from being elected in
the first place. Cruz would be slaughtered in the popular and electoral
vote and that might actually signal the end of the Republican Party.

I don't know how the GOP extricates itself from the crazies who control
the party or whether it even wants to do so. The U.S. House Tea Party
members are in safe gerrymandered districts. Sitting U.S. Senators are
hard to pry out of office. The last two days of negative comments coming
from the far right about Chris Christie are, I think, indicators that
the Republicans aren't going to change. The funny thing, of course, is
that Christie is a genuine conservative, but not conservative enough for
the Tea Party types.

Of course I have no idea who is going to be the standard bearer for
either party in 2016. But I do know that for the Dems, it will not be a
crazy person. For the Repubs, I'm pretty sure it will be. Someone like
Jon Huntsman, Jr., hasn't a chance for the nomination, but he'd do well
in the general election.

it is not likely the Supremes would take the case. If they did, they
would find for settled law, and Cruz would again be the fool.
Those sorts of beliefs of course would keep Cruz from being elected in
the first place. Cruz would be slaughtered in the popular and electoral
vote and that might actually signal the end of the Republican Party.
Thoughtful answer. Thanks.
I guess the Tea Party crowd don't want to mess with courts, so they just
block everything at the Congress level.
How is that different than Obama making laws by decree and using his
agencies as hammers, like the IRS, HHS, DOJ...?
Because Harry's response represented a mature, lawful challenge to the
proposed hypothetical legislation. He didn't suggest forcing a
government shutdown or reading from Dr. Seuss on the Senate floor in
order to get his way.

The Tea Party is a conglomeration of white trash, with the emphasis on
trash. The elected politicians who claim to be Tea Party members are
racist obstructionists who hate government and want to destroy it.
They're secessionists. Their followers are ignorant and stupid. I'm not
surprised you admire them and think they are good people.
The impossible happens and Ted Cruz is elected POTUS in 2016. In the
first few months of his presidency two bills are introduced in Congress
with the full support of Cruz who promises to immediately sign them into
law.
The first is to overturn Roe v. Wade, making abortions illegal.
The second is to reinstate both prayer and teaching of creationism in
public schools.
As a liberal, progressive Democrat, how hard would you be willing to
fight to prevent these bills from becoming law?
Point is the Tea Party crowd are as passionate about their beliefs as
liberal Democrats are about theirs.
Disclaimer: This post is in no way intended to suggest agreement or
support of the "Tea Party" movement.

Actually, Mikey, I'm just a tad left of where the center in this country
used to be. The problem is the "right" has moved so far to the right it
has shifted the center. As to whether I state in my political posts what
I believe, well, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you aren't
equipped intellectually to offer up such a judgment.

I never really understood "new math". The reference point changes
therefore you are now a "tad" bit to the left?

Looking back, you used to be where you claim to be now but I think more
recently you took a hard turn to port somewhere along the line.

One thing that I just don't get:

Progressives push for entitlements and "do good" programs that from a
compassionate point of view nobody can really argue with. But the hard
core reality is that the country is going broke (or *is* broke) with
what we have in tax revenue based programs now. Other posters have
pointed out that slashing defense spending still doesn't come close to
filling the coffers to pay for what's in force now, let alone pay for
more. Same with business tax revenues and the "1 per centers".
Nailing them with high marginal taxes still won't raise enough money.
The deficits still have to be borrowed.

Somewhere along the line ... and this is where some of the Tea Party
preachings have some validity ... some very difficult decisions are
going to have to be made in terms of how much tax revenues can continue
to be earmarked for entitlements. The progressive philosophy seems to
always be "we can't afford *not* to invest in these federally funded
programs. Seems to me we can't afford much of anything ... period.

This, along with the article I referenced in an earlier post this
morning about a prediction that, unless things change, in four years
there will be more work-age people *not* working and collecting some
form of federal aid than people working and paying taxes only makes
matters much worse.

Compassion can't be argued with, but it can be argued and won that a
job and a complete family is better than welfare for generations.
Having a job and looking to improve yourself and your position in
life is a big positive for society. Waiting for the first of the month
to get your check and for your EBT card refill is not a positive for
life and not conducive to keeping a family together.
Short term help for tough times is good, but to turn it into a way of
life is not.
But, I'm not telling you anything you didn't know. I just wanted to
say it! :-)

Oh I wanted to add, I saw a picture, it had two photos, one had Yogi
bear holding a sign that said "Please Do Not Feed The Animals. The
stated reason for the policy is because the animals will grow dependent
on the handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves.
The second photo, a sign on a bus stop shelter, it said,
"Food Stamps are here for you"
The Food Stamp Program, administered by the Dept. of Agriculture,
is actually proud of the fact it is distributing the greatest
amount of free meals and food stamps ever."

I must not have perused this group long enough to have heard the

Also, can some make a list of alias's, I don't know who the references

Loogy and iboater are one and the same. Scotty had hurt his jawbone

The second is to reinstate both prayer and teaching of creationism in
public schools.
Thoughtful answer. Thanks.
I guess the Tea Party crowd don't want to mess with courts, so they just
block everything at the Congress level.
How is that different than Obama making laws by decree and using his
agencies as hammers, like the IRS, HHS, DOJ...?

How am I using something SCOTTY said against Scotty??? Someone here
asked Scotty where and why he comes up with insane, delusional non-
factual crap, and his answer was that he got his face smashed in.

depends way to much on government handouts. Those flyover, redneck areas
will probably survive a hell of a lot better than most Liberal Arts majors,
and large city dwellers.
You see the same percentage of people of color at Tea Bagger rallies as
you do at the Republican National Convention.
And I see colors there too.

No? Didn't you get the email from your local Tea Party chapter?
Nah, the whole topic is just a figment of you paranoid imagination.
You should stop in and visit your local Tea Party, they're a bunch
of good people that think the government is spending way to much
money. Not anyone you need to be afraid of.
Mikek
The Tea Party is a conglomeration of white trash, with the emphasis on
trash. The elected politicians who claim to be Tea Party members are
racist obstructionists who hate government and want to destroy it.
They're secessionists. Their followers are ignorant and stupid. I'm not
surprised you admire them and think they are good people.
Seems as if I saw people of color at the Tea Party rallies on TV. Maybe
they are upset with a government than is hell bent on spending us in to
doom. A recession, the like of has not been seen for a thousand years. We
lose World Reserve Currency status and we are probably in worse shape than
most 3rd world countries. A populace who is not inclined to work hard, and
depends way to much on government handouts. Those flyover, redneck areas

Thing is Bill, the USA has plenty of tax revenues available to pay for
all kinds of things, including a systematic reduction of debt, if we
were willing to make the hard choices and re-arrange spending
priorities. The current administration hasn't seriously dealt with
that, mainly because of the protective nature of Congress members for
programs that benefit their home states.

The biggest one is defense spending. We could cut it in half tomorrow
and still be spending four times as much as any other nation on the
planet. We don't need 11 aircraft carriers and their support task force
ships anymore. That kind of defense spending is a carry over from the
days of the Cold War and only continues because it protects jobs.

Cuts in defense spending would hurt for a while and cause a kick in
unemployment numbers. But if the economy can start growing again at a
decent rate, those affected will be absorbed into an expanding job base.

We could cut defense spending 100% and we could still not pay down our
debt. We have 46% of the people not paying any income taxes! with EIC
giving checks to some of those. About 85% of our tax revenue is for
spending on mandatory items. SS, entitlements such as retirement, etc. we
have to bite the bullet and stop spending our kids money, and both cut
spending and raise taxes. Both on those now paying taxes and those
presently getting a free ride. Is just not this administration that is
overspending, but they are printing money like mad, which is going to be
the semi hidden tax of inflation. Also leading us to lose reserve currency
status. My oldest daughter is 40 years old. I think same as you're
child. How the hell have we burdened them with so much debt, for no
infrastructure? At least in Ike's time we build highways with our
spending. 40 years ago, the debt was only about $650 billion. We have to
decide that the people actually have to work for a living. We give 99
weeks of unemployment now. You could get an Associates degree in less
time. Maybe we have to go back to the 26 weeks and those people will have
to get a job with a cut in pay. Why do we have so many Latinos here
working when citizens state they can not get a job? Lack of work ethic?

Been to Costa Rica several times. First time for 30 days, and figured that
was a week too long. Do not think I would want to move there. But if we
crash, it is going to be a world wide depression, so better to live
someplace where you can fish and grow a nice garden. Sort of Victory

It is worse than that. We could cut 100% of all of our discretionary
spending and not eliminate the deficit.
Entitlements and interest on the debt pretty much eats every dime of
revenue. The rest is borrowed.

Maybe we should send "space" back to DoD so they could hide the money
to get us off the ground again in some big omnibus appropriations bill
like they do the aircraft carriers.

It is easily considered a national security issue that we have no
manned space program and our unmanned program is in tatters.
Fortunately the private sector may come to our rescue.

The next generation of weather and GPS satellites might be privately
owned

The government is also needed to preserve safety and provide security

Save the Transfats!
FDA eyes ban on trans fats due to heart disease risk
I found nothing in the article that referenced the Tea Party
fighting for the right to eat transfats.

No? Didn't you get the email from your local Tea Party chapter?
Nah, the whole topic is just a figment of you paranoid imagination.
You should stop in and visit your local Tea Party, they're a bunch
of good people that think the government is spending way to much
money. Not anyone you need to be afraid of.

Got out of the wrong side of the bed this morning?
Just calling them as I've seen them.

Krause is a propagandist of Marxism who likes no one, including himself. I honestly feel he has fantasies of perpetually leading the revolution.

Trans fats may be on their way out of U.S. foods.
