Jewish Classical Musicians and Composers
from various Wikipedia articles

[I have removed most of those I am pretty sure are non-classical. I
mark with an asterisk those whose names are familiar to me, but
remember that I listen mostly to historical performances. I think
Ravel and Saint-Saens had Jewish mothers, though neither of them
considered themsevles Jewish. Among those who were not raised as Jews
was Mendelssohn. Several converted to other religions, including
Mahler, Klemperer (who converted back to Judaism), ormandy, and most
American conductors before Bernstein. Szigeti never referred to
himself as Jewish in his autobiography and for many others, such as
Kreisler, Judaism played only the smallest role in their lives.

[Let me know which ones I can safely remove from this list and give me
some additions. I have several lists of my own and may some day put
them together.

[For example, there's a book the Socialists in Germany put out
sometime between 1933 and 1945 that lists Jewish musicians that I have
consulted at the Library of Congress:

[Stengel, Theophil, 1905-, Lexikon der Juden in der musik, mit einem
titelverzeichnis jüdischer werke. (Berlin, B. Hahnefeld [1943], 404
col. 21 cm., ML102.J4 S8 1943.

[also such works as the Encylopedia Judaica, Famous Musicians of a
Wandering Race, and Great Jews in Music.]

although Jewish Americans are less than 2% of the United States population.

But as long as we're on the subject:

Grigory [sic] Ginzburg, conductor

Wouldn't that be Anton for the conductor?

And look at the Milken Foundation/Naxos Jewish-American composers--a
great series. And it matters not one whit. Music is great, good,
mediocre, or bad depending on what it sounds like and how it affects
one, not the day of the week of the Sabbath, or even whether there is a
Sabbath, or presence or absence of a foreskin, or any other determinant.

Because so many of Jewish heritage have contributed so much to the great
music of our civilization. As a people from whom some of the greatest
artists and composers have arisen in such abundance throughout the last
several centuries, we owe them and their heritage a special debt of
gratitude. It seems to spring in unusual abundance from their culture. We
are indeed blessed. It is only right that they should be so recognized.

There is no doubt that Jewish people have made contributions to the
arts and sciences that are far greater than any other group (national

The problem with your theory is that the degree of contribution can't
possibly be measured objectively. Someone could come along and claim
that Bach, Beethoven and Brahms alone outweigh all those on your list
times 10. How are you going to argue with them? Certainly the "no
doubt" part of your thesis may be no doubt on your part, but you can't
possibly speak for others.

The far larger problem is when you invoke phrases like "far greater
than any other group" and "superior intellectual culture". Those
concepts automatically invoke seperativity and naturally -
inferiority. Would you care to make a list of the intellectually
inferior cultures - perhaps you could list them by degress - starting
with the most inferior, working your way up.

Having avoided stepping into these dangerous waters until now, your
point, Gavin, is compelling. As a non-jew I've been brought up to
respect the jewish contribution to, in my case, European culture as
being out-of-proportion to their numerical strength, but as you rightly
suggest, once you say "Jews are brighter, more cultured, more
hard-working" than the rest, not only are you allowing the possibility
of describing non-jews as _less_ bright etc, you are also admitting the
possibility of describing jews as... well, I'd rather not give negative
attributes here but I'm sure you can imagine.

I think it _is_ possible to suggest that putting certain sections of
society in ghettoes does unusual things to those people's motivations.

It would be interesting to know how many of the people on your lists
would actually prefer to be labeled as a Jewish composer or a Jewish
soprano or a Jewish violist. We are simply musicians and should be
known for our musical activities. The rest is our own affair.

Re: Maria Yudina. While hardly an expert on this eminent Russian pianist
(1899-1970), I've read much about her and have many of her recordings. In
my reading, so far, I have never seen a reference to her being of Jewish
heritage. As a matter of fact, as best I can tell, she was a devoted
Orthodox Christian. The article on her in Wikipedia has the following
passage:

"Maria Yudina was one of the few Soviet artists who openly opposed the
Communist regime, resulting in her being banned from teaching or performing
on stage on several occasions. She can also be considered one of the great
Christian thinkers of Russia in the twentieth century (among her friends was
the philosopher Pavel Florensky)."

On the otherhand, I find no reference to either Max Steiner or Jerry
Goldsmith. While both wrote movie scores, I think that as Jewish composers,
they deserve inclusion in this list.

BTW, I knew Mendelssohn was Jewish and so could never understand his writing
the Reformation Symphony. Thanks to your explanation, I do now!

Respectfully,

of Jewish American musicians, which shares some names with this list. For
other famous Jewish Americans, see List of Jewish Americans.

although Jewish Americans are less than 2% of the United States population.

She was Jewish in origin, and/but converted to Russian Orthodox branch of
Christianity.

Respectfully,
PJF
Jewish Classical Musicians and Composers
from various Wikipedia articles
[I have removed most of those I am pretty sure are non-classical. I
mark with an asterisk those whose names are familiar to me, but
remember that I listen mostly to historical performances. I think
Ravel and Saint-Saens had Jewish mothers, though neither of them
considered themsevles Jewish. Among those who were not raised as Jews
was Mendelssohn. Several converted to other religions, including

American Jewish Composers
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Jewish_American_Composers
This is a list of famous Jewish American composers. For listings of famous
Jewish American songwriters, musicals writers, and film composers, see List
of Jewish American musicians, which shares some names with this list. For
other famous Jewish Americans, see List of Jewish Americans.
Persons listed with a double asterisks (**) are winners of the Pulitzer
Prize for Music. Jewish composers constitute 20% of the award's recipients,
although Jewish Americans are less than 2% of the United States population.
This list includes both Jewish composers who were born and raised in the
United States and who were born in Europe or elsewhere and immigrated to and
settled in the United States.

Thank you. Lenya. I appreciate your input. If you have time and can do so
conveniently, could you provide a cite on which you based your response? I'm
a devoted fan of Maria Yudina and would like to know more about her not only
as a brilliant musician but as a person.

Kindest regards,

She was Jewish in origin, and/but converted to Russian Orthodox branch of
Christianity.

Re: Maria Yudina. While hardly an expert on this eminent Russian pianist
(1899-1970), I've read much about her and have many of her recordings.

my reading, so far, I have never seen a reference to her being of Jewish
heritage. As a matter of fact, as best I can tell, she was a devoted
Orthodox Christian. The article on her in Wikipedia has the following

Kindest regards,
PJF
She was born Jewish but converted to Christianity on May 2, 1919. I do not
know of any source for her biography on the web, there are several recent
books of her writings and letters in Russian which have some
(auto)biographic materials as well and where I looked up the date of
the conversion. I doubt that much of those materials available in
English except for very few translations which you may google up.
In any case in Russia/USSR once you are born Jewish the nationality record
in the identity card stays with you no matter what you convert to. This
may have changed recently, I do not know.

She was Jewish in origin, and/but converted to Russian Orthodox branch of
Christianity.

my reading, so far, I have never seen a reference to her being of Jewish
heritage. As a matter of fact, as best I can tell, she was a devoted
Orthodox Christian. The article on her in Wikipedia has the following

On the otherhand, I find no reference to either Max Steiner or Jerry
Goldsmith. While both wrote movie scores, I think that as Jewish
composers,

they deserve inclusion in this list.

Again, thanks for your response. Based on what you've been able to tell me,
I think Maria Yudina's heritage is pretty well documented. You've been very
kind.

Thank you. Lenya. I appreciate your input. If you have time and can do so
conveniently, could you provide a cite on which you based your response? I'm
a devoted fan of Maria Yudina and would like to know more about her not only
as a brilliant musician but as a person.
Kindest regards,

Communist regime, resulting in her being banned from teaching or

On the otherhand, I find no reference to either Max Steiner or Jerry
Goldsmith. While both wrote movie scores, I think that as Jewish
composers,

they deserve inclusion in this list.

BTW, I knew Mendelssohn was Jewish and so could never understand his
writing the Reformation Symphony. Thanks to your explanation, I do
now!
Felix Mendelssohn, like his siblings, was baptized by his parents in the Lutheran church.
The parents themselves formally converted to Lutheranism when Felix was a youngster. I
suppose that one might see Felix's retention of the Mendelssohn name (as opposed to his
parents' adopted Bartholdy) as significant, but he was Jewish only by descent, not in fact.

Actually, I believe he often used the hyphenated name, Mendelssohn-Bartholdy.

Children don't always see life as do their parents. Perhaps he in fact
considered himself Jewish, as would have the Third Reich.

Jewish Classical Musicians and Composers
Great, and why would you, a fucking Nazi, want to compile such a list?
Does it have something to do with phrenology? Or just with the fact
that you are a scrotum hickey? Go fuck yourself, asshole.
