great series. And it matters not one whit. Music is great, good,
mediocre, or bad depending on what it sounds like and how it affects
one, not the day of the week of the Sabbath, or even whether there is a
Sabbath, or presence or absence of a foreskin, or any other determinant.

Because so many of Jewish heritage have contributed so much to the great
music of our civilization. As a people from whom some of the greatest
artists and composers have arisen in such abundance throughout the last
several centuries, we owe them and their heritage a special debt of
gratitude. It seems to spring in unusual abundance from their culture. We
are indeed blessed. It is only right that they should be so recognized.

There is no doubt that Jewish people have made contributions to the
arts and sciences that are far greater than any other group (national
or religious) in proportion to their small numbers. Judaism is a
superior intellectual culture, period.

Having avoided stepping into these dangerous waters until now, your
point, Gavin, is compelling. As a non-jew I've been brought up to
respect the jewish contribution to, in my case, European culture as
being out-of-proportion to their numerical strength, but as you rightly
suggest, once you say "Jews are brighter, more cultured, more
hard-working" than the rest, not only are you allowing the possibility
of describing non-jews as _less_ bright etc, you are also admitting the
possibility of describing jews as... well, I'd rather not give negative
attributes here but I'm sure you can imagine.

I think it _is_ possible to suggest that putting certain sections of
society in ghettoes does unusual things to those people's motivations.

It would be interesting to know how many of the people on your lists
would actually prefer to be labeled as a Jewish composer or a Jewish
soprano or a Jewish violist. We are simply musicians and should be
known for our musical activities. The rest is our own affair.

[I have removed most of those I am pretty sure are non-classical. I
mark with an asterisk those whose names are familiar to me, but
remember that I listen mostly to historical performances. I think
Ravel and Saint-Saens had Jewish mothers, though neither of them
considered themsevles Jewish. Among those who were not raised as Jews
was Mendelssohn. Several converted to other religions, including
Mahler, Klemperer (who converted back to Judaism), ormandy, and most
American conductors before Bernstein. Szigeti never referred to
himself as Jewish in his autobiography and for many others, such as
Kreisler, Judaism played only the smallest role in their lives.
[Let me know which ones I can safely remove from this list and give me
some additions. I have several lists of my own and may some day put
them together.

Re: Maria Yudina. While hardly an expert on this eminent Russian pianist
(1899-1970), I've read much about her and have many of her recordings. In
my reading, so far, I have never seen a reference to her being of Jewish
heritage. As a matter of fact, as best I can tell, she was a devoted
Orthodox Christian. The article on her in Wikipedia has the following
passage:

"Maria Yudina was one of the few Soviet artists who openly opposed the
Communist regime, resulting in her being banned from teaching or performing
on stage on several occasions. She can also be considered one of the great
Christian thinkers of Russia in the twentieth century (among her friends was
the philosopher Pavel Florensky)."

On the otherhand, I find no reference to either Max Steiner or Jerry
Goldsmith. While both wrote movie scores, I think that as Jewish composers,
they deserve inclusion in this list.

BTW, I knew Mendelssohn was Jewish and so could never understand his writing
the Reformation Symphony. Thanks to your explanation, I do now!

She was Jewish in origin, and/but converted to Russian Orthodox branch of
Christianity.

Re: Maria Yudina. While hardly an expert on this eminent Russian pianist
(1899-1970), I've read much about her and have many of her recordings. In
my reading, so far, I have never seen a reference to her being of Jewish
heritage. As a matter of fact, as best I can tell, she was a devoted
Orthodox Christian. The article on her in Wikipedia has the following
"Maria Yudina was one of the few Soviet artists who openly opposed the
Communist regime, resulting in her being banned from teaching or performing
on stage on several occasions. She can also be considered one of the great
Christian thinkers of Russia in the twentieth century (among her friends was
the philosopher Pavel Florensky)."
On the otherhand, I find no reference to either Max Steiner or Jerry
Goldsmith. While both wrote movie scores, I think that as Jewish composers,
they deserve inclusion in this list.
BTW, I knew Mendelssohn was Jewish and so could never understand his writing
the Reformation Symphony. Thanks to your explanation, I do now!

[I have removed most of those I am pretty sure are non-classical. I
mark with an asterisk those whose names are familiar to me, but
remember that I listen mostly to historical performances. I think
Ravel and Saint-Saens had Jewish mothers, though neither of them
considered themsevles Jewish. Among those who were not raised as Jews
was Mendelssohn. Several converted to other religions, including
Mahler, Klemperer (who converted back to Judaism), ormandy, and most
American conductors before Bernstein. Szigeti never referred to
himself as Jewish in his autobiography and for many others, such as
Kreisler, Judaism played only the smallest role in their lives.
[Let me know which ones I can safely remove from this list and give me
some additions. I have several lists of my own and may some day put
them together.
