OK...I'll be honest....I've avoided this offering from the
always reliable Sierra Nevada brewery....not a huge fan
of bock beers...they cant seem to make they mind up what
the suds wanna be...is it a Pale ale?...IPA?...Lager?
Well, it's a bit of all three, really.
Also, the rave review Neil X posted yesterday had me
concerned...sure, he knows his way around brews...
make NO mistake...but then this kid is also way into
middling shit like Blue Oyster Cults 1973 stumble
"Tyranny and Mutation" and 3am alcohol fueled runs
down to the Beacon Street 7-Eleven for 99 cent chilli
cheese dogs and Mr Pibb Slurpees.
Questionable track record to be sure.
On to the brew then.
Medium straw color....nicely carbonated...upfront maltiness...
mild bitterness on the tongue...not cloying at all (which I feared)
No....nice clean aftertaste....I like the hops up in here!
Gotta say...this is ANOTHER winner from Sierra Nevada.
Very nice beer, indeed.

I actually looked at a 6 of Sierra Nevada Torpedo IPA today and
thought old Sweets touted that a while back IIRC, maybe I should try
it. My hand reached out toward the shelf but I drew back as a black
shadow passed over me. Or maybe it was guy in a jock riding the
magnificent, balmy waves of Ocean Beach screaming Miles Davis lyrics.
Whatever, maybe I'll try and buy it again tomorrow.

Kids . . . The kids behind the counter keep extra Sierra Nevada
labels around, so when Sweets walks in from the beach, in his clown
shoes, speedo w/suspenders & blublockers, they smarten up in comic
fashion, call out, "Mr. Kelly - your beer is right here, sir!!," and
slap the label of the moment on to whatever stale crud was at the back
of the cooler. "Looking forward to your tasting notes, sir!," as he
shuffles out, a bottle already open and half-way drained.

Get the Torpedo, it's awesome! If Celebration is still around, get
some of that, too!

Yeah, the Torpedo is awesome stuff. Well worth risking a gout attack

It must be my alleged French royalty bloodlines, here. Horse pills of
Allupurinol daily for "prevention", colchicine sporadically when I
feel it coming on, and these big green capsules (can't think of name)
during a mega-attack. It sucks having an affliction that is linked to
beer, red wine and shellfish!

What *are* those big green capsules?

I take (or am supposed to take) Allopurinol daily to suppress uric
acid levels, I pop colchicine when I'm going to drink (or to ease me
back into the Allopurinol routine), and I take *prednisone* if I get
an attack. But I don't really get attacks, anymore, since I've been
on the drugs. I hate taking drugs, but . . .

What do you take if/when you've got a bad attack? Prednisone, while
extremely effective, seems to be not a healthy thing to take.

I like my dr, but sometimes I think I should try a new one just to see
if there's a different approach.

I'll let you know tonight when I'm home. I just did a google, but the
names aren't familiar to me. Heavy duty stuff, whatever it is. Attack
gets whacked within 24-36 hours.

Rap, prednisone is the worst IMO, I had to take it for a year or so
for RA and despite how painful that shit can be, the cure was worse
than the disease, it totally fucked up my sleep and metabolism. I
guess (hope) you only take it once in a while but I took it everyday
and it is also addicting in that you can't just stop taking it, I was
breaking pills in half for a couple of months to tirate off it.

Yeah, it's bad . . . if the only effects were the obvious ones - I
get weird dreams and it makes it harder than it already is to lose
weight - it would be tolerable - but it's got to do bad stuff to other
parts of your system . . . it's a steroid, right? And I think the
other common gout drugs are just a shot in the dark.

The prednisone has a dramaticly positive effect within minutes.
Besides the side effects already mentioned, it also lowers your immune
system. And it's gotta do other bad stuff to you, too. I've picked
this up through casual reading, I'm not claiming to be any sort of
authority.

PS These warnings on the link sound really bad, but my doctor didn't
seem concerned. You take the capsules for a couple days and you're
done (til next time). Sounds like a better answer to me than
prednisone.

Narcolepsy is what I invoke in others. My only real health issue,
besides my damn eyes going through what I gather is the normal aging
process (they usually need a bit of time in the morning to get going,
I need a little more light than I used to, and I need a little
correction to read), is gout. And thankfully that's handled fairly
well through drugs. Minimal maintenance doses keep me fine with red
wine and single malt scotch, but I need to prepare a little bit if I'm
going to drink beer.

Get the Torpedo, it's awesome!  If Celebration is still around, get
some of that, too!
I always thought Celebration was a Christmas ale with spices added.
Just found out this year it is an IPA and bought a 12 pack. I loved
it.
Celebration and Torpedo are some of the best buys out there these days
of $10 6 packs.
Which is why I brew and spend about .40 a pint.

Someone told me they had the Mendocino Imperial IPA the other day and
it was one of his new favorites. Anyone try it yet?

I've been turned off on the Red Tail Ale for quite a few years now, it
always tastes old when I get it. Used to be one of my favorites.

Wow . . . I know you know your beer, and I'm just exaggerating for
fun, here, but how sad . . . I remember having '93 and '94
Celebration years afterward in the fridge. I'm guessing it was brewed
before then, most likely, but that's when I started buying it.
Usually 3 cases a year.

It is sad, I agree. As long as I have been an IPA fan I never had one.
I guess brewing them cuts down on the need to purchase one -
especially around Christmas. Anyone ever have the Ballast Point Fathom
India Pale Lager? I am curious how it was since I am brewing an IPL
this weekend.

Celebration Ale has always been an IPA - no spices for Sierra.
