“Tin Man”
———————
Sometimes late when things are real
And people share the gift of gab between themselves
Some are quick to take the bait and catch
The perfect prize that waits among the shelves
But Oz never did give nothing to the Tin Man
That he didn’t already have
And cause never was the reason for the evening
Or the topic of Sir Galahad
So please believe in me when I
Say I’m spinning round round round
Smoke glass stain bright colors
Image going down down down
Soap sud green like bubbles
Oz never did give nothing to the Tin Man
That he didn’t already have
And cause never was the reason for the evening
Or the tropic of Sir Galahad
So please believe in me
When I say I I’m spinning round round round
Smoke glass stain bright colors
Image going down down down
Soap sud green like bubbles
Oz never did give nothing to the Tin Man
That he didn’t already have
And cause never was the reason for the evening
Or the tropic of Sir Galahad
So please believe in me

Isaac fucked up the lyrics. The perfect prize waits among the shells,
not shelves. The song is about falling in love vs. just fucking around.

I think the most important and profound line of the song is:
“Oz never did give nothing to the Tin Man that he didn’t already have”...

Yes, Oz showed them all that they already had what they so desired to have....

Quite poetic, lovely film....

"Shells" does seem a better word choice than "shelves", but every source seems to give shells as the correct lyric:

Written by Dewey Bunnell

"Sometimes late when things are real and people share the gift of gab between themselves
Some are quick to take the bait and catch the perfect prize that waits among the shelves..."

That could mean "find the pearl in the oyster" or "pick the pebble under one of the three shells". But does it mean "find someone to fuck around with" (as Corey would put it) or find the right person to fall in love with"?

I think that "shelves" may be correct, after all, as in grab the right line, prize, among the books on the shelf, and I seem to recall an interview where the writer explained it similarly to this. This would have been in a 1970s rock magazine so all I have is a dim memory at best of the quote.

There is the fact that those lines sound like a rhyme, and 'shelves' does rhyme with 'themselves' while 'shells' doesn't. So I suspect you're right.

In reading lyrics for the SND, I've discovered that lyrics sites like to copy and paste from each other, a blatant error being repeated in page after page. That could explain the prevalence of "shells".

So much for Corey's claim that 'shelves' was a fuckup.

I would venture to suggest that whether the word is “shells” or “shelves” doesn’t matter much... both words are valid, more or less, in the context of the song, and I still contend that the line about Oz giving nothing to the Tin Man that he didn’t already have is really the most crucial line in the song...

How do you interpret that line? As "No one can give you any qualities you don't already have?" That's my reading.

The line is a direct reference to the Wizard Of Oz... at the end of the movie, the Tin Man realized that he already DID have a heart all along... it’s not that we don’t have what we seek somewhere deep inside of ourselves, it’s that we have to believe in ourselves enough to access these aspects of ourselves... a very Zen lesson, isn’t it?

Sometimes late when things are real
And people share the gift of gab between themselves
Some are quick to take the bait and catch
The perfect prize that waits among the shelves
But Oz never did give nothing to the Tin Man
That he didn’t already have
And cause never was the reason for the evening
Or the topic of Sir Galahad
So please believe in me when I
Say I’m spinning round round round
Smoke glass stain bright colors
Image going down down down
Soap sud green like bubbles
Oz never did give nothing to the Tin Man
That he didn’t already have
And cause never was the reason for the evening
Or the tropic of Sir Galahad
So please believe in me
When I say I I’m spinning round round round

“Tin Man”
———————
Sometimes late when things are real
And people share the gift of gab between themselves
Some are quick to take the bait and catch
The perfect prize that waits among the shelves
But Oz never did give nothing to the Tin Man
That he didn’t already have
And cause never was the reason for the evening
Or the topic of Sir Galahad
So please believe in me when I
Say I’m spinning round round round
Smoke glass stain bright colors
Image going down down down
Soap sud green like bubbles
Oz never did give nothing to the Tin Man
That he didn’t already have
And cause never was the reason for the evening
Or the tropic of Sir Galahad
So please believe in me
When I say I I’m spinning round round round
Smoke glass stain bright colors
Image going down down down
Soap sud green like bubbles
Oz never did give nothing to the Tin Man
That he didn’t already have
And cause never was the reason for the evening
Or the tropic of Sir Galahad
So please believe in me

What do you think the writer is trying to say? I have no idea.
Besides the main point, the "Wizard of Oz" reference that the Tim Man already had a heart, which seems obvious?

Mr. Dance thinks that the height of hilarity is calling Emily Dickinson "EM."
No, that's a lie. It thought it was much funnier to discover that no one had any idea who "Em" was.
I actually thought you must be making an Auntie Em reference, since Oz is sort of back in the news with the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the classic film version.

That's what Pendragon thought as well. But I don't see how anyone could have got through 7th grade without having learned the poem, or how anyone who has learned the poem could overlook "frigate" (Hell, it's not even pronounced right!)

let's see here. I think the writer is speaking to the futility of finding love among the desperate and the broken. "Take the bait and catch..." can anyone do both? Is anyone who is "quick to take the bait..." likely to find that "perfect prize"? "Late when things are real..." In my experience the people left at this point are lonely and sad, and looking for someone else to cure them of it. No one can, but they don't know that. "Oz never did give nothin to the tin man that he didn't already have..." You gotta love yourself before expecting it from anyone else. "So please believe in me..." Who is he asking? Us? His love interest? Either way he's asking to be told it's real from an outside party so he's fucked and part of him knows it. "The topic of Sir Galahad..." But there's that desperate hope that something pure can be born of this tragically hopeless union. Galahad, The Pure was, after all, the product of infidelity and betrayal.

“Tin Man”
———————
Sometimes late when things are real
And people share the gift of gab between themselves
Some are quick to take the bait and catch
The perfect prize that waits among the shelves

Oz never did give nothing to the Tin Man
That he didn’t already have
And cause never was the reason for the evening
Or the tropic of Sir Galahad
So please believe in me
