Swapan Basu of Rhyming Poets International invited me to read at the NYC poetry Festival. The questions are:

Is this a legitimate event or just a venue for hacks and would-be's to show off?

If this is a legitimate venue, will I make an ass of myself by reading my bit better than middling poetry? My stuff is ok for small library and book store events; I do very few of these.

It sounds legit.

"The New York City Poetry Festival is programmed entirely by the organizations that make poetry readings happen in this city. If you would like to read at the festival, we suggest that you contact your publisher, collective, reading series, or other organization with which you are associated and encourage them to apply to host a reading at the event."

IOW: By invitation only.

They also have an open for the wannabes:

"If you aren’t a part of a larger poetry organization or submission to host a reading are closed, we suggest that you bring some poems to the event and read at the Ring of Daisies open mic, which you can sign up for on site!"

I understand a bit better now. Basu needs at least two other poets besides himself to be considered for a reading. If he could recruit that other guy (good) and me (better than not good), he'd have a not too bad line-up. The remaining questions are:

Should I do this?

If I do, what should I read?

I'd say, sure. You've given readings, so you have all the skills. You get to spend a day on Governor's Island in July, which must be nice that time of year. You'll be surrounded by poets, including some that (I'm sure) you'd enjoy talking to. It sounds like it would be a fun day.

You could even find those books of your packed away, and bring a few, if you wanted, to sell or even give away to right people.

I've never given a reading in my life, so consider the source. I'd say, make it 50% published work, 50% from your newer work; once you know how much time you have, you can build a set list. Try to distinguish your work from the other formal poets' with distinctive forms (like your decimas) and subject matter (like your Lady Chatterly poem). Try to keep the content "modern" - no poems about things fading and dying like the rose!

Well, somehow Basu got a half hour slot at the NYC Poetry Festival. He already has two other people to read. I gave him a tentative yes. That makes four readers. I get 5 minutes. It's not until the end of July. He couldn't find Ed Morales, and no, it's not the professor at Columbia U.

This is a feather for Basu, and I hope he can get another small slot for 2021.

Yes, thy coordinators couldn't run an April fund raising event, so no money.

Frank is happy, he worries.

Oh well, it's for the best, staying safe and all that.

He waited until almost the last minute, but Bob Dylan has cancelled his Summer tour as well.

Ain't it hard to suck dick with a mask on, George? The masks are to cover up your stench, not due to Corona.

It's in NY, Stink. You could never afford the travel expenses.

Although... if you were to start walking there today, you might make it to the festival on time.

Whoever you are, that is, because you are not Zod aka me.... I worked for 13 years at the same job up until my car accident, this is a well known fact...... I do not mention it often because it is not a poetry related topic, but I can and will work at present, yard work and other odd jobs, and I consider my aluminum can collecting for $$$ to be work, with all the walking and bending involved to get some spending $$$....

Fake Zod, your spread of false information about me serves what purpose, what a malicious grudge you have for me to want t constantly smear my name...

I almost suspect you to be.... someone I know i real life.....?
"Maybe he lives in NY or Long Island....."

G.D. --- you remember last year when Pendragon DID make fake George Dance posts, so he will always be somewhat suspected....

When I mentioned that a while back he screamed fe proof.... which I suspect you still keep handy...?

It looks like a legitimate event. This will be their 10th year. This year's headliners are Paul Muldoon, Terrance Hayes, and Ariana Reines - not household names, but all on PPP and Wikipedia.
https://www.newyorkcitypoetryfestival.com/

I don't have any info on mr. Basu, FWIW.

Swapan Basu is a retired math and science teacher in Newark, NJ. He used poetry to try to motivate his students to learn what he was teaching. He runs Rhyming Poets International, but it's really mostly New Jersey. He runs readings in a library in Newark. He puts out the occasional e-zine, Flute. There was one man in this group who had some real talent, but I forgot his name; I directed him to Able Muse. Basu is a sweet guy, but his poetry was middling in my opinion. He might be better now.

Is this a legitimate event or just a venue for hacks and would-be's to show off?
It looks like a legitimate event. This will be their 10th year. This year's headliners are Paul Muldoon, Terrance Hayes, and Ariana Reines - not household names, but all on PPP and Wikipedia.

I don't have any info on mr. Basu, FWIW.

If this is a legitimate venue, will I make an ass of myself by reading my bit better than middling poetry? My stuff is ok for small library and book store events; I do very few of these.
A gtreat idea would be for all the NY and East Coast poets here to meet and read there.... me and Doc could even catch a bus up, and visit his son while we are there...!

Yes, General Zod, Will and Loretta should definitely go. They can glamp on the island for (starting from) $150 a night or we are sure that Edward or Michael would be glad to have the three stay with them. Bus tickets would be about $100 each way. Total trip = $600+ depending on food costs.

I would love Stink to visit, there are woods and a stream close by. For Dockery, many sheds to pick from. Can't promise their return.

You can take the train from Baltimore to NYC, if you wish.

NYC is very expensive; I wouldn't recommend visiting NY just for a poetry festival. There is only one open mike venue, and it will likely be booked solid by locals soon after the event opens. It will take me two hours to get to Governor's Island, and I don't even know when Basu's slot will be.

You'd be welcome, and you could almost do it as a day trip. I suspect Will and Zod don't have much cash, and I would not want them to spend all that money just for a poetry festival. I could have my husband make a video recording to email.

If I went to New York, I'd make at least a weekend trip of it, since my son has lived there for nearly two decades. Here's his book, Karen:

Nah, Scott Murphy said I was a solder-splashed geek ghoddess. Have you looked at the rest of this thread? I'm reading at a pottery festival in NY for 5 minutes and the my pots have to rhyme even if they don't scan. (That was mean of me.) I've got to pick out enough to to fill 4 minutes and an extra one just in case.

I remember times when I've spent days or weeks composing what seemed
like an enormous poem with a multitude of words in it, only to record
it and find it lasted 35 seconds.

Good luck with your reading. Meanwhile, have a Geekerick.

I purchased a Raspberry Pi
and asked for the square root of i.
It smoked and it sizzled
and finally fizzled.
That's not what I call a good buy.

Swapan Basu is a retired math and science teacher in Newark, NJ.. He used poetry to try to motivate his students to learn what he was teaching. He runs Rhyming Poets International, but it's really mostly New Jersey. He runs readings in a library in Newark. He puts out the occasional e-zine, Flute. FWIW: Hieronymous has displayed no such behaviors in the 6 years that I've been a member of this group.

Can I come with you too? Can we go to the Bronx Zoo?
You can take the train from Baltimore to NYC, if you wish.
NYC is very expensive; I wouldn't recommend visiting NY just for
a poetry festival. There is only one open mike venue, and it
will likely be booked solid by locals soon after the event opens.
It will take me two hours to get to Governor's Island, and I
don't even know when Basu's slot will be.
Beware, Karen, of J. Corey Connor. Not only is he a notorious
plagiarist and unethical troll, but he also has form for stalking
women he encounters on Usenet.

It's only a few weeks ago that the alt.tarot plagiarism was discussed
here.

As for the stalking of women, I didn't say he did it where you'd
notice it.

Yes, it was discussed (or rather alluded to). However, the actual incident took place long before I came here... and the details surrounding it have never been clearly explained on either side.

As for the stalking of women, I didn't say he did it where you'd
notice it.
You also didn't say how recent it was.

It appears to have been many years ago, and, again, the details you've (not) presented have never been clear.

I can only vouch for Hieronymous' character based on my experiences with him, here. And the Hieronymous I know is not the same one you have described.

Post by Edward Rochester Esq.
Pastor Con is morally bankrupt..his biography as 'union supervision' is now at the point of pointing spotlights at various acts..his pay to preach documents hide details of more important documents.
How do you know this?
He made it up...
Maybe, maybe not. If it's true, give evidence.
I did not write that...my last post this morning was at 9:05 on the eggs...the post you are referring to was at 9:19...seems I have me an impostor..
Or you had another senior moment......
I will not argue with you after this reply but I did not write that post..now you can believe me or not, it makes little difference to me. I do see an Edward Rochester Esq. name but he is gone..
Nova BBS still tags you as Rochester......
Well whoever is using drive-by is being tagged ER....one more time, I did not write that post. I say it the way it is with no need to hide...if I wrote that, I wouldn't have a problem telling you so...
So, what is YOUR opinion of Pastor Corey.....?

Can I come with you too?
Can we go to the Bronx Zoo?
You can take the train from Baltimore to NYC, if you wish.
NYC is very expensive; I wouldn't recommend visiting NY just for a
poetry festival. There is only one open mike venue, and it will
likely be booked solid by locals soon after the event opens. It
will take me two hours to get to Governor's Island, and I don't even
know when Basu's slot will be.
Beware, Karen, of J. Corey Connor. Not only is he a notorious
plagiarist and unethical troll, but he also has form for stalking
women he encounters on Usenet.
Do you remember Smolens? Snorey isn't quite as bad (AFAIK), but he's
in the same class.
Smoley never stalked me; I'm too old and ugly. Anyway, my husband will be with me.

It was a joke, but thanks for the help.....

Actually, I'll be headed out on a bus in the exact opposite direction soon, I have a ticket waiting for me to Florida....

Can I come with you too?
Can we go to the Bronx Zoo?
You can take the train from Baltimore to NYC, if you wish.
NYC is very expensive; I wouldn't recommend visiting NY just for a poetry festival. There is only one open mike venue, and it will likely be booked solid by locals soon after the event opens. It will take me two hours to get to Governor's Island, and I don't even know when Basu's slot will be.
That's charming. Excuse me. I'm familiar with NYC,
how to get there, and what to do while there. I didn't
mean to suggest I wasn't. All I need is a reason to go.
You'd be welcome, and you could almost do it as a day trip. I suspect Will and Zod don't have much cash, and I would not want them to spend all that money just for a poetry festival. I could have my husband make a video recording to email.

For the last century or so he city has always taken car of the mentally ill, one way or another. I wonder if that's going to change? Next February they are simply allowed to die of exposure. I recommend staying in Columbus Georgia.

Is that that is going to happen?

I confess I don't catch all the latest news items.

I know of someone with longterm serious diagnosable condition ( and no money ), taken overnight to a mental health clinic and then discharged the next day simply because government dollars to do otherwise were not there.

I know 4-5 meals a day are available for the homeless, and shower programs, but I'm not sure how well set we are down here for hospitals, since my friend connected to this scene (General Zod) uses the V.A, Hospital if he has the need.

They should give you a drug and blood alcohol test. Fuck up and you're out. You wouldn't last a day.
