W. Earl Brown (Dan Dority) on the Cancellation of Deadwood

Here is an interesting post from the HBO forums by W. Earl Brown (who
plays Dan Dority on Deadwood)-

It has nothing to do with pregnancies. It has nothing to do with
conservative watchdogs.

It has everything to do with money.

Chris Albrecht, HBO CEO, is in danger of losing his job. The network is
bleeding red ink. His production side lost a ton of money. They sunk
120-million into ROME. They are committed contractually to another
season, plus they have 120 invested already.

On DEADWOOD, they did not get foreign rights. Paramount had a deal with
Milch to work for them. In exchange for them releasing him to HBO, they
got foreign rights to our show. So for three years, HBO has not seen
that money from around the world.

While we are the second biggest show on HBO, we are the 2nd most
expensive to make (half of what ROME costs, mind you). Chris has
shareholders to answer to and is panicked to cut the bottom line. Never
mind the fact, that in 2004 he posted a 1-Billion dollar profit (the
most for ANY network. Ever.) You might've won the Super Bowl last year,
but if you go 0-16 this season, you're looking for another coaching job.

We had been given word of season four. They trumpeted the announcment
of the season to the press in March. Chris, obviously having not been
raised the way I was where a man's word is his bond, reneged on us. He
offered Milch the opportunity to wrap up the series with either a 2
hour movie or an order of six episodes. David refused, feeling that to
conclude with anything short of a full season (which we'd already been
given word of) would demean all the work we'd done prior. I agree.

The shitty part of this is David's Paramount deal is over this year.
Starting with season four, HBO would own the show outright. All world
monies would be theirs. BUT... that doesn't help Chris with the
shareholders today. He is cutting off his nose to spite his face.

Write HBO. Call HBO. Email HBO. It amounts to the bottom line. If the
are overun by subscibers and the threatened cancellations are enough of
an issue to seriously cut into their cash flow, they might change track.

Bottom line matters. CARNIVALE only had a weekly viewership of 2-3
million. SOPRANOS, on the opposite end, has 10-12. DEADWOOD drew 5-6.
ROME has a comparable draw, although their viewership dwindled as the
show went on. However (this is solely my opinion having constantly
encountered fans on the street, in airports, etc. who are only now
getting into the show via dvd of season 1) DEADWOOD is (was) still
ascending.

We've been cut off at the knees.

Read this. Memorize this. I'm afraid some Monitor from Big Brother will
soon delete it and I will never work for HBO again... at least while
Albrecht is at the helm.

-----

ok, let's do what Dan says, let's make an attempt to save Deadwood.

Since Showtime is part of the CBS/Paramount/Viacom mess, IMO, fans
should try to encourage Paramount to buy out Milch's new contract and
move Deadwood to Showtime for its fourth season.

I love "Deadwood." "Rome" has been a piece of T&A crap from the getgo.

This is sad.

Many of us fans are so angry and disgusted that we have decided to
cancel our HBO subscriptions after the third season. This is what you
do when you feel personally betrayed by a trusted resource. There is
also talk about organizing a "National Cancel HBO Day" to be held at
the end of Season Three ... and it's a movement that seems to be
gaining support.

Recently, someone at the HBO Community Board established a website as a
clearinghouse for ideas. It's at <http://savedeadwood.net/index.htm>
and it's for folks who want to help in a massive grass-roots effort to
bring HBO back to its senses, to its long-held mission, and to its
loyal fan base.

Every letter, every email, every phone call counts!

Listen carefully. Cancelling "Deadwood" is a good thing because the
show lives up to its name -- dead wood. After all, they've used every
cussword they can come up with a million times. What else do they have
left? It's about time they pull the plug.

They're idiots for paying for HBO and getting "upset" over the cusswords.

I wonder if they watch Hookers on the Point, or Real Sex, or the interview
with the Serial Killer, or the other dozen or so shows and think the same
thing?

It's pay TV. You're *voluntarily* paying money to watch HBO. The idea that
content that you not only voluntarily bring into your home, but pay money
for, offends you, is just beyond logic.

It's not like a guy comes over your house and shits on your floor.

It's like you PAY a guy to come over to your house to shit on your floor,
then complain about the shit smell in your house.

Um, no, the idea that we buy the channel and then they put on mostly

Works fine for free TV, but not pay TV. I bought the thing for
something to watch. Now put something on that I CAN watch or they don't

The obsessive bad language is an intentional motif. There's a point to
it. It's demonstrative of the uncivilized nature of the times. It's
supposed to create a dichotomy between the rawness of the words and the
shakespearean rhythms of the dialogue itself. It's representative of
the comingling of civilization and the uncivilized frontier. Plus,

Actually, it's the Deadwood folks who are "obsessing." If they had a
good show, they could do it without the foul mouths. But they are
camouflaging the poor quality of the show with obsessive bad language.
Plus,
there's the added argument that it's authentic.
I don't believe the language is authentic for the times and usually hate 4
letter words in movies just for the sake of them. Lethal Weapon 4 comes to
mind.

I love Deadwood though and I think your other arguments are spot on. I
thought season 1 was better than 2 because they included individual plots in
episodes along with the continuing story. Season 2 could have used a bit
more of that I think. Also, Season 2's language had anyone who watched NYPD
Blue wincing a bit as it was obvious Milch was copying from his writing on
that show. "Breaking my balls" became almost as common as Cocksucker.

So how many episodes have you watched of this show you hate so much? If the
language turned you off instantly then you are hardly qualified to debate
the points others have brought up. Yet you continue to do just that and
dismiss them, ad nauseam.

OK, let's look at your logic here. If I watched one episode, then I'm
not qualified to comment on the show. If I watched more than one
episode, then I'm a hypocrite because I say I'm turned off regarding
the bad language but still watch it. Hmm ... why not say what you

are unqualified to comment.

because of the language and that is the reason the show is being
canceled (the point of the thread in the first place), I beg to differ.
The language is indeed "the point."

A.) Oh, I'm sure it's intentional. B.) Uncivilized nature isn't
depicted by schoolyard cussing. All you depict with that language is a
problem communicating with your audience. C.) Your Shakespearean
comparison is still laughable. D.) People swear in all cultures. In
that way, it is authentic. People also defecate, vomit and flatulate.
That's authentic, too. Does that mean they should put that on as well,
because it's "authentic?" Swearing doesn't add any authenticity
whatsoever. All it succeeds in doing is getting an R rating.

Welcome to the vile, vile West.

"Deadwood" is the most profane western in the history of the genre. ...
Just about everybody...uses polysyllabic epithets of the sort we
associate with Tony Soprano and gangsta rappers. It's language so
unprecedentedly blistering, even some tough, jaded TV critics have been
moved to ask, "What the, ah, heck, is this?"... According to Milch,
it's a much closer approximation of the language of the real West,
that's what. "That's the way they spoke," he said. "I researched the
show a good, long time - over a year - and went through a tremendous
amount of primary material. And the one thing upon which everyone
agrees was that the profanity and obscenity was astounding. It was
overwhelming. People who would visit would report that they simply
couldn't believe the way people spoke out there."... Note that Milch
said "primary" material. He's talking about accounts of Deadwood in
letters and diaries from the time in which his show is set and oral
histories collected by the Library of Congress' Living Memory project.
... Rather than take Milch's explanation at face value, I did a bit of
primary research myself.... Don Reeves, the McCasland Chair of Cowboy
Culture at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma
City, recently oversaw the installation of an exhibit about the
cinematic West. ... He said the expression "cusses like a sailor" would
apply equally to cowboys, but he was quick to add that, from his study,
the salty language of the 1870s wouldn't necessarily be the same as
today's profanity. [emphasis added]... Milch said that however
startling the language in "Deadwood" may be, shock is not his point.
"The lawlessness of the language is, first of all, something that I
hope people will get used to," he said. "But it [also] establishes an
atmosphere, verbally, in which anything is possible. And at that point,
the viewer, one hopes, is brought to some sort of emotional equivalency
with the environment and then begins to identify how certain characters
rise above it."

That's interesting but as the article states, what would have been
considered vile and profane by the standards of the time are probably a lot
different than today. I have no doubt there was cussing for instance but I
don't believe the language Milch uses is authentic. I don't believe anyone
has even been able to trace his favorite word, cocksucker, as being in
widespread use at the time. " Fuck" wasn't a curse word at the time either
but reserved for the act itself. You can find a lot of references to this
on the web if you search for "language of Deadwood".

If you were a fan of NYPD Blue, you'd notice Milch sprinkling a lot of
speech patters from that show in Deadwood. Since he co-wrote Blue, he's
only copying himself. I especially noticed it in the second season with the
multiple uses of "breaking my balls".

But all that is beside the point anyway. I do agree with Milch that it's
meant to establish the lawlessness of the place and time. It works for me.
I'll definitely be unhappy if he doesn't get to complete his story because
HBO canceled it too soon.

If anyone doesn't believe what I've written above then "you suck cock by
choice".

There is a question in regards to if these so-called "letters and
diaries" even exist. A researcher trying to verify these comments found
only one mention of cussing and that was an incident where the usually
quiet Bill Hickock used a swear word.

This is sad.
I saw a couple eps of rome and the only T&A chicks were a couple

soldiers and the Army, and Caesar, and got better looking women for
supporting roles. Hell have it be about Caesar going to Egypt and have

Some snippets from an interview with David Milch, the creator and
producer of Deadwood:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Interviewer: 'One of the most immediately noticeable things about
Deadwood is the immense amount of profanity, even by cable standards."

Milch: "As for the obscenity in Deadwood, I was trying to identify what
organizing principles exist in a place without laws. Because Deadwood
was a criminal community, built on land that had just been ceded to the
Indians, they didn't want to pass any laws, since allowing law to exist
would undermine their claim to the town. Language therefore had to
serve two functions: to beat down any expectations of civility, and to
show how words generate meaning through the context and emotion with
which they're used. This is how one word can bear the weight of an
entire story if the emotions and the context are there. "

" I did my research, and from what I read, in the West, obscenity was
used to establish dominance, like apes beating their chests. With no
law, any question could have lethal results. Language developed as an
alternative to law."

Interviewer: "... there is a lot about the language that you haven't
discussed. The grandiloquence of some of the characters makes the
profanity even more apparent. Your wonderful minor character, the
unctuous mayor of Deadwood, has delivered memorable soliloquies."

Milch: "At the time, book-learning consisted of Victorian literature,
Shakespeare and the Bible. The educated class tended to be self-taught
and highly motivated. Education became an alternate mode of being. I
feel that the metrics of speech are important, and even in those of us
who hold the mistaken belief that we separate from each other, the way
God says "I, too, have a hand here" is in the rhythms and metrics
of speech."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I didn't like it at first, either, because of the language but listen
to this. A man asks one of his prostitutes if she's made money for him
by turning a trick: "Since last our eyes were upon each other 'lo, I
hope you've earned me five dollars". See how the beauty and crudeness
blend? It's wonderful. Yes, it's obscene but also Shakesperean.

Yeah, it's just a TV show but a lot of this is about how HBO cancelled
it. They said months ago they would renew it and then, at the last
minute and without any warning, they said it wouldn't be renewed after
all. They screwed over not just it's obsessive fans but the shows
actors and crew, who were just as shocked as us. They did it to
"Carnivale", looks like they'll do it to "Deadwood", and it sets an
ugly precedence. It may as well be broadcast TV, where this happens all
the time. "It's not TV. It's HBO". Whatever.

But seriously...it's a TV show. Get over it.

Good grief, man! Why do you continue to defend bad shows? First
Deadwood -- which I am sure HBO believes is aptly named at this point
-- and now Carnivale. Listen carefully -- TV shows get cancelled all
the time and there are always a few fanatics out there who are all
upset, no matter how bad the show is. I was upset when they cancelled
"The Americans" decades ago, but I got over it. Same way with "The
Pruitts of South Hampton," "OK Crackerby", "Capt. Nice" and "My Mother
the Car." Just take a deep breath and go on with your life.

The difference here is that we are PAYING SUBSCRIBERS ... and were told
we were paying for a product that would have (at least) four parts to
it. If you're an HBO subscriber, and you are tired of being told you
should be GRATEFUL for whatever the Yankton Seersuckers deign to do
with your loyalty and your cash commitment, go to

Just wondering if the people behind these save Deadwood campaigns feel like
total suckers? Since it's come out that HBO offered to continue the series
but it was the cocksucker Milch that ended any hopes.

It's Official: Deadwood Is Dead
Deadwood creator David Milch has penned a statement that pretty much
confirms our worst fears: TV's best acted, written, directed, costumed and
photographed show will end after its upcoming third season — and before its
natural conclusion. The entire statement is below. Read it and weep.

"I'm touched by the passionate response of many of the fans of Deadwood and
understand the disappointment they have expressed that this is to be the
final season of the show.

However, I presented a new project to the network, John from Cincinnati,
which they are very excited about. We worked together to try and fashion a
plan that would have enabled us to produce a fourth season of Deadwood, as
well as the new show. HBO, in fact, offered to commit to an additional six
episodes after this season to conclude Deadwood.

I felt the right decision creatively was to stop now and move forward with
the new project. Deadwood has been a magnificent experience for both me and
the cast and crew behind the show, and I hope that everyone who loves
Deadwood will not allow their disappointment in any way to affect what we
believe is a wonderful season to come."

David Milch is a brilliant writer. And I'm sure he's a very nice man. But
this is unforgivable — not to mention the height of selfishness. We deserved
that six-episode wrap-up. Heck, we earned it. HBO was willing to do right by
Deadwood fans. Too bad the same can't be said for Mr. Milch. Toss 'em in the
pigpen, boys.

So am I, and I don't like it that HBO has something on that nobody can
watch due to poor language that is inaccurate to what was really spoken
at that time. You know what I'd like to see? I'd like them to use the
actual wording and vernacular that they used in Deadwood at that time,
not modern day foul language. But of course, that would take the edge
off if they actually did that -- and they'd lose the R rating as well.

IS A NEPOTIST AT THE HELM OF HBO?

It is curious that Chris Albrecht activates a publicity blitz for
Entourage, which STARS HIS DAUGHTER, and cancels Season 4 Of Deadwood.

To offer to end the series with two movies is an insult to the
superlative quality, critical acclaim and loyal following of this show.

NO MORE DEADWOOD?
NO MORE HBO!

NO MORE HBO!
To be fair, Entourage is far cheaper to shoot than Deadwood.
