Pick the biggest turkey, from the company that is *so much better*
than *everyone else* that they *deserve* to dominate personal
computing.

I can't decide whether to nominate Window's entire "security" model,
or its 32-bit compatibility directory, appropriately named SysWoW64:

Oh, Peter Köhlmann knows of at least three! Of course, he is wrong about all
three of them. :)

---------------------------------------------------------------

Snit:
-----
Excellent screencasting software, similar to ScreenFlow. And
example of something I find key to its use:
What OSS tool on desktop Linux
has anything even close?
-----
Peter Köhlmann:
-----
There are several more. Look up "Istanbul" for example or
"Byzanz", or "Cankiri" The list can grow quite a bit, but
these are the most used ones
-----
No program Peter pointed to does the task shown in the video. Peter
never found *any* way on desktop Linux.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Peter Köhlmann:
-----
In fact, there are at least 3 programs for screencasting which do
either without exception *all* he "needs" or can do it combined
with others
-----
| You have spoken of three programs.
No, I have not. Your incredibly bad reading comprehension is
rearing its ugly head again,
-----
Both of those quotes come from the same day and the same thread and were
stated in that order. In another thread on a previous day Peter gave the
names of three screen recording programs: Istanbul, Byzanz, and Cankiri.
None of those, nor any set of programs, has ever been shown to do what Peter
claims can be done on Linux.

So you call me a bullshitter for pointing out that Linux has no decent
ScreeFlow applications and when I ask you for examples of the Linux
offerings you offer up the lame excuse that it's been covered already.

Seems to me that it is you who are the bullshitter because if you could
offer a Linux alternative, you would have instead of dodging the question
with a lame reply.

Nobody "fears" discussing linux. It is just that no sane person will

You claim not to fear speaking of it, but you will not with anyone because
you can insult them instead.

You are AMAZINGLY insecure. Just amazingly so.

Actually I meant to say 'ScreenFlow like' applications. ScreenFlow is my
favorite screencasting / recording application.

I've tried several of the Linux offerings and they are unstable, lacking
in features and just horrible in comparison. I was hoping Linux had
improved it's stable of applications since the last time I tried Linux
but I suppose at least for screencasting Linux is still not an option.

Being able to publish directly to social media, youtube and such directly
from the application. Also I like the batch export feature which allows
me to apply my settings to multiple files.
The editor is intuitive and powerful enough for me where I don't need
external programs. I can also easily export my files to targeted device
platforms and they will look good. So for example the iPad or
smartphones. This saves time for me.

They are horrible. At least the ones I tried. Biggest piece of junk was
Istanbul. I couldn't even keep it running as it would crash or hang
constantly. That was under Ubuntu.

Linux users seem to have very low standards when it comes to their choice
of applications. What good is a solid operating system when the
applications software is so awful? This does not make sense to me.

That is good - though I think there are some Linux programs that allow for
that, too. Would have to check. Know some allow for at least YouTube (such
as Screencast-O-Matic <http://www.screencast-o-matic.com/>. It is based on
Java... which may not be ideal. Have not used it much.

I do not use that often but I know it was a much requested feature. I
thought I recalled some Linux program having this but with a quick search do
not know which one.

What type screencasting do you do? Any examples? For what you describe Linux
might be able to serve your needs. Not saying you should move to it, or even
that it would work the same or even as well, but it might be *possible*
without going through massive hoops. At worst you might have to record in
one program and then do some editing in another. Not that big of a deal to
me (though it depends on the particulars of what you do).

For me there is a lot I do where there simply is no non-absurd way to do it
on Linux. Being able to show / hide / replace / resize the cursor in
post-production is a very powerful tool. Same thing with showing / hiding
keystrokes (though ScreenFlow does have some quirks with this). These are
things which are simply not possible in any Linux tool, at least that I know
of or anyone in COLA has been able to show (esp. the mouse tools).

I also use the "snapping" to window edges. You can sorta fake this on other
video editors, but it would be much more cumbersome and prone to errors.

I have used it some and it seemed to work - but that was under a VM and the
video card is made to be a very simple one. Might make a difference.

This is a big issue for desktop Linux. They simply lack much (if any)
compelling software which does also run on the competition or have a similar
piece of software that works better on the competition.

Thanks for playing.
So you call me a bullshitter for pointing out that Linux has no
decent ScreeFlow applications and when I ask you for examples of the
Linux offerings you offer up the lame excuse that it's been covered
already.
Seems to me that it is you who are the bullshitter because if you
could offer a Linux alternative, you would have instead of dodging
the question with a lame reply.
Sorry Charlie. I don't dance for trolls anymore.
Then next time when you know you are completely wrong, you might want to
consider keeping your big mouth shut rather than making a fool of
yourself.

Yeah because most people buy a computer specifically for "screencasting."
Except, of course, for the 99.9% of us who don't even know what the hell
that is and don't care enough to find out.

Isn't that the way of these "snits?" Come up with some niche application
that almost no one gives a rat's ass about -- and drone on about how
Linux doesn't use a couple commercial applications for that particular
niche market. And that -- supposedly -- makes the vastly more secure,
easier to maintain and install Linux somehow inferior to the Malware
Magnet Hobbyware Betaware WinCrap or the Toy OS from Cupertino.

Color me unconvinced.

Windows is better than Linux, there's no doubt in my mind. You guys
are free to love it and use it but lying about how useful and easy it
is wastes everyone's time because we can all read through that
bullshit claim.

Yeah because most people buy a computer specifically for "screencasting."
What? They buy computers to be general purpose computing devices.
Screencasting is ONE task they MIGHT do. But there are hundreds if not
thousands of things they can do. Screencasting is ONE example.

At least you admit you do not even know what it is... you have no idea what
you are talking about. Fine.

So why not pick some areas where you think desktop Linux handles tasks
better than the competition? Why not show it - no need for fancy
screencasting, just some simple screen recordings.

The point is pretty much any segment can be used. Screencasting. Image
editing. Quilting software. Word processing. Spreadsheets. Presentations.
Email. Working with PDFs. On and on and on. For the general user (and for
experts) Linux is behind on each of these.

Where do you think desktop Linux is compelling - other than price and
command line?

A little stroll around YouTube to see people explaining the use of

But this guy is simply a nymshifting troll, and he saw the app's

Why don't we instead look at actual tools and what we do? Make real-world
comparisons. I would welcome that... and actual discussion about the
technology. I will use ScreenFlow and other tools on OS X, you use whatever
tools you want on Linux. Let's see how they compare.

Okay. If the troll is not THE "Snit" is A "snit." I actually looked up
screencasting and saw that there are several applications available in
the Linux Mint / Ubuntu repository. Since I have zero interest in making
trolling anti-Linux videos (which seems to be "Snit's" obsession), I
really didn't check into any of these.

You underestimate the popularity of screen casting programs. How do you
think many of the Youtube how to videos are made?

The Linux variety are usable but to put it mildly can't even scratch the
surface of what the OSX programs can accomplish.
However for someone looking to create a "YouBoob" video, they are fine and
probably overkill in fact much like gimp is no Photoshop but fine for the
majority of people.

If someone needs the features of a certain program so badly, they should
use that program and run the operating system that supports that particular
program.
Simple as that.

Not that it matters because when snit is involved he will pick one minor
feature that is important to him and whine incessantly about that feature
while ignoring other features that might be more useful to most users and
are present in both programs. And he will build an entire 12 ring circus
around that argument.

I use OBS to stream games to Twitch from Linux. It also records for
editing just fine.

They just added a bunch of filters, such as chroma key and color key, so
one can have facecam overlays instead of just a rectangular facecam.

Eventually it will end up in the news, of course very twisted with lies.

It's amazing that the kludge known as WinDOS works as well as it does,
really.
Yet the completely free and given away for nothing so called superior
Desktop Linux has in many years made absolutely no inroads into
replacing Desktop Windows.

And even more amazing that as you with one hand wank off over Linux, on
a daily basis you use Windows to post to this news group via the Windows

And now you bullshitting cretin will tell us which stores sell linux

Face it: There are a lot of people out there who don't want to install any
OS. They would think that they are unable to. And most of them are a lot
smarter than you are

Dell sell Desktop Linux laptops via their web store. The same laptops
are also available with Windows desktop.

Windows: http://www.dell.com/uk/p/inspiron-15-3552-laptop/pd?ref=PD_OC
Linux:
http://www.dell.com/uk/business/p/inspiron-15-3552-laptop-ubuntu/pd?oc=bn55203&model_id=inspiron-15-3552-laptop-ubuntu&ref=ubuntu-LP

HP also sell the same hardware with Linux or Windows. They were having
another shot at shifting the hardware again this year.

Now bend over like the Klown you are and present your arse for yet

Most of them are clearly smarter than you, that's for sure. For the vast
majority of PC users, installing an OS is completely beyond them, it's a
tool they use to do work and earn money. The numbers of people like this
are on a par with the number of people who could and would want to fit a
different engine in their car.

Well, you have to give David Cutler some credit for that.

I can't help but wonder what condomresiduev considers to be so
problematic with certain of those technologies. Bob was stupid, but it
was released at a time when Microsoft wasn't sure whether people would
find Windows 95 intuitive or not. After all, Windows 3.1 seemed to
confuse even the smartest individuals and the interface's overhaul with
Windows 95 was the result of a psychologist being brought around to make
the experience as simple as possible for people. It tended to succeed as
most Linux desktops are STILL (poorly) imitating its GUI.

Clippy was also idiotic, but Microsoft was concerned with helping people
get things done. Once again, this was a time when most people have never
touched a computer and weren't aware that they could find help for all
of their questions in the top menu. It annoyed professionals, but casual
users with no understanding of computing tended to rely on its help.

Zune was ahead of its time and those who owned it knew very well that it
was superior to what Apple was offering. The way it shared music and
playlists, in particular, was something that made it stand out. Of
course, it was very poorly marketed and didn't have a store with as much
presence as iTunes so it was bound to fail. If something of the sort
were released today and cell phones WEREN'T capable media machines, it
would likely be different since a decent media store is bundled with
Windows 10.

Microsoft Kin was also poorly marketed and not capable enough to draw
attention away from the iPhone.

However, Windows 8 was actually quite good for anyone who bothered to
look under the hood. Idiots who are only concerned by the very surface
of a product disliked it, but they're superficial twats who know nothing
anyway. Once a user got to the desktop, the experience was superior to
what Windows 7 provided.

I wonder in what way Passport was bad, same with Live. I

As for Windows RT, the ONLY thing which made it bad was the lack of
useful software for it. The operating system itself was/is more secure
than both iOS and Android. Its only drawback is its inability to go to
the desktop which is only an issue because, as mentioned earlier,
Microsoft never bothered to create software such as Microsoft Office for
the RT interface.

It tended to succeed as most Linux desktops are STILL (poorly) imitating its
GUI.
The modern GUI is based largely on what Apple did, which was based on what
Xerox did. Still, Apple added a LOT to the experience - things we take for
granted now:

* Double clicking
* Trash can (or the like)
* Graying out inactive items
* Full file system in GUI (as icons)
* GUI based hierarchical folder structure
* Meta-data associations with icons
* Self-redrawing windows (and double buffering)
* X to close a window (OK, this is from NeXT)

All seems so intuitive now, but it was not done before Apple as far as I
know.

What is even worse is as they were getting rid of Clippy others at MS were
pushing the Search Dog. One hand did not know what the other was doing!

Apple might not have had the best piece of each part of the ecosystem but
they had the best overall ecosystem.

Once you added Classic Menu to it, maybe. :)
