They say they want to lure male viewers but then they have sci-fi pilots
like this?

"The network has a number of science fiction projects in the works, one
about a romance between a human girl and an alien boy"

It's sci-fi yes, but it still sounds like a soap opera aimed towards
girls. Sounds like outer space Twilight.

Yeah, this is total bullshit.

The CW flushed any chance of that when they unloaded shows like "The
Secret Circle". Programming like "Beauty & The Beast" and "The Carrie
Diaries" are telling male viewers the exact opposite - that this is a
network that's downright hostile to men.

I'm convinced that "Arrow" was a fluke - that it was originally designed
to be another estrogen-fest, but somehow they screwed it up.

"Surf-crazed aliens... Of course." - Amber, "Alien Surf Girls",
Episode #1.1, "Wipeout".
Wait a minute... "Of course"?! "*Of course*"?!! Did I miss a step here??!!

I'm still wondering what they are planning to do with Nikita. Even
though we have some relationship crap it's still about a hot ass-kicking

zero...

I suspect that the writers didn't expect to have a third season. I think they've done a decent job so far but I don't see the series going anywhere. They pretty much defeated Amanda last week and when she's gone for good what else do they have? They seem to have forgotten about the "dirty thirty". I think the series is pretty much done.

Fourth season - the current season is actually season #3.

I agree - once Amanda is defeated once and for all, I think the show
is done as a series anyway...

Still Nikita acts more like the alpha male while Michaels adopts the
submissive unsure being seduced role usually reserved for damsals in
distress.

As a male guy, watching Nikita for Alex, now that's hot...

"Supernatural" is, what? - a holdover from The WB?!...

In any case, it's the exception that proves the rule - Have you seen
*any* evidence that The CW is trying to put together another show like
"Supernatural"?!!

I've tried watching "Beauty & The Beast" and it's turned
completely craptastic. I refuse to watch "The Carrie Diaries" because
the 3 minutes of one episode I watched left me frothing at the mouth
and trying to bite off my own tongue from the seizure at how sickly
sweet it was...

I'm a man.. well, gay man... and that says something.

Yeah, and "Vampire Diaries" only had about 2/3 of a good season in it
before it degenerated into an unwatchable, muddled (and repulsive) mess.

It's actually Dawson's Creek with vampires.

And if you watch Hart of Dixie, you'll notice that the shows pretty much
share plots, except no one is murdered or eaten at parties.

The project referenced above is "Oxygen", which stars Aimee Teegarden,
and co-stars Malese Jow, so the girls are "pretty" enough that I'd
sample this, despite the fact that the concept is horrifically
derivative of "Roswell" (and likely to be nowhere near as good...).

Still, I'd much rather they do this project than some of their more
adle-brained dev projects, such as "The Hundred", "The
Originals" [blech!!] and/or the 'retooled" "The Selection" pilot.

I've threatened to visit her once or twice. You should've seen how
terrified she was of that thought.
So much for her IDIC principles.
*laughing* She accused me of stalking/being a stalker when I
suggested visiting her. I don't think it's "IDIC" so much as... Well,
she's just plain mental.

Darker shows like "Arrow" and "Cult" are an attempt to lure male
viewers.
To me, it sounds like "titties in space". It might attract teenage boys, if
the girl is attractive enough.
Years ago, youth-oriented publishers would always say in their
submission requirements that girls would read stories in which the main
characters were boys, but boys wouldn't read stories about girls. Of
course that wasn't for a visual medium...

The show has so much partial male nudity and largely lacks scantily-clad
females that the male viewers they are trying to attract must be gay.
The lead character is a superhero, allegedly, who takes the time to shave
and wax his chest. The scares never appear to be in the same place from
week to week.

I think the show has some sort of plot beyond him murdering 20 henchmen
each week, but I'm not sure what. I think his mother is the enemy, but
other weeks, she's not. She sure doesn't seem to give a damn that her
husband's been kidnapped, and there's no explanation as to why no one
else is doing anything about it.

What have women liked about the show, the romance? It's been the lamest
crap I've seen on tv.

Cult's on, what, week 5? Our two attractive leads have had a meaningful
kiss while one of them was under the influence of drugs, so it's the
usual deny-deny-deny-deny cliche of two characters who should be with
each other, but aren't. I have a theory that men would object to
romantic plots if they weren't all exactly the same and weren't all
so badly written. I have no theory as to why plots like these appeal to
women.

Cult's been better than I expected. In fact, I wouldn't have watched it at
all if others posting to Usenet hadn't given somewhat positive reviews to it.
I'm expecting the search for the brother to be one red herring after another
each week, so that's boring. I'm somewhat intrigued by how the actors on
the show within a show are being affected by both the fans and the
manipulations of the unseen executive producer. Alaric bores me, which
is a real problem. The show needs more Robert Knepper, a lot more,
although maybe it's a good thing he's just supporting.

But not his face. Call me old-fashioned, but that's backwards.

And does he still do his manly workouts shirtless in the mostly dark
warehouse, lit only by the sun/moon which always seems to shine down
directly onto his chiseled torso (through a conveniently located
skylight, I guess) while leaving the rest of the warehouse in shadows?
Because that never got old in the short time that I watched the thing.

It does look that way when I've watched it. I've stopped though - it's
just too confusing. All the characters look alike too, so I can't always
tell who's who. Except Felicity and Diggle....

Arrow's a tough guy. Between exercising, pretending to be an irresponsible
spoiled rich asshole, being a bad date, and once a week, telling a bigger
asshole, "You've failed this city!" after killing half of his henchmen,
he takes the time to wax and shave his chest.

Because that's what tough guys do.

I can forgive Stephen Amell in part. He really doesn't know where on his
body the makeup artist will apply the burns and scars, as they migrate
all over the place, so he's got to shave it all off.

Also, he needs shaved chest hairs to have makeup apply to his face, the latest
version of men's hair transplants.

You've segued from this one character to men in general. I don't know
about men in general (since I'm perfectly happy to avoid any oversharing
in this department), and regardless of the Ollie actor's personal
grooming preferences, I'm just guessing that his bosses on the show
would have him doing it for the little girls out there in the audience
want/expect the character to be unfurry. Gotta have a feminine side, and
all that.

Do you think that the actor likes it, so they just allow it for the
character, as well?

Hopefully she'll give him his testicles back as part of the inevitable
divorce agreement.

People will do all kinds of things to convince themselves that we're not
the meat sacks that we really are. I suppose it's always been true to
some extent, as most guys in my generation don't go for the ZZ Top look,
and most American women have shaved their legs and underarms for as long
as I've been around. But the weird stuff seems to be escalating. This
total aversion to body hair, the plastic boobs, the scrotal ironing (if
that's even a real thing, and I'm still a bit skeptical), the teeth
bleaching, the *anal* bleaching (WTF? The fact that this one is true is
the reason I can't entirely discount the scrotal ironing bit), etc. I
can't figure it out. It's like they're taking the whole Barbie and Ken
doll thing *way* too far.

The show has so much partial male nudity and largely lacks
scantily-clad females that the male viewers they are trying to
attract must be gay. The lead character is a superhero, allegedly,
who takes the time to shave and wax his chest.
But not his face. Call me old-fashioned, but that's backwards.
And does he still do his manly workouts shirtless in the mostly dark
warehouse, lit only by the sun/moon which always seems to shine down
directly onto his chiseled torso (through a conveniently located
skylight, I guess) while leaving the rest of the warehouse in
shadows?
Because that never got old in the short time that I watched the
thing.
I think the secret warehouse is beneath the secret night club, which
makes the secret skylights ... problematic.
I thought the warehouse was above the night club...?
That would make more sense, but, really, this show is too stupid to care
about.
As long as the tweener girls out there get to see Ollie's glistening,
shaved and chiseled chest and abs on a weekly basis, it's all good.
I don't believe for a moment that men shave their chests for them.
A close friend of mine married a early 20 something last year, and she's
made him get every last hair off him from the neck down, and she'd
prefer he got rid of it from the neck up, too.
You can actually look that one up.

I think he got it wrong. Women didn't shave their armpits and legs
before then because nobody ever saw them. Skirts were ankle-length
and some sort of stockings were always worn. Long sleeves and high
collars.

I think women shave their arms and legs because it emphasizes the
natural difference between men and women. The logic goes like this:

Women have less body hair than men, therefore
People associate a lack of body hair with women, therefore
It becomes a secondary sexual characteristic, therefor
The less body hair a woman has, the more she is perceived to be
desirable.

Same goes for boob jobs and lipstick.

Now, we have men shaving their body hair, because of the androgyny
movement. Or fad, whatever.

Signs of good health are sexually desirable in both sexes, ergo
bleaching teeth, covering up pimples, losing weight . . .

I think women shave their arms and legs because it emphasizes the
Women have less body hair than men, therefore
People associate a lack of body hair with women, therefore
It becomes a secondary sexual characteristic, therefor
The less body hair a woman has, the more she is perceived to be
desirable.
Same goes for boob jobs and lipstick.
Now, we have men shaving their body hair, because of the androgyny

Signs of good health are sexually desirable in both sexes, ergo
bleaching teeth, covering up pimples, losing weight . . .

But not his face. Call me old-fashioned, but that's backwards.
And does he still do his manly workouts shirtless in the mostly

down
directly onto his chiseled torso (through a conveniently

Because that never got old in the short time that I watched the

I think the secret warehouse is beneath the secret night club,
which
makes the secret skylights ... problematic.
I thought the warehouse was above the night club...?
That would make more sense, but, really, this show is too stupid

I don't believe for a moment that men shave their chests for them.
A close friend of mine married a early 20 something last year, and she's

Exactly. The problem of natural body hair wasn't because they wanted to
sell women these newer fashions, but because they wanted to sell women
shaving articles.

Sounds like an investigative trip to nude beaches in Europe is required
to see what lovely young things do there.

My theory about men being denied choices about wearing beards had to do with
times in our history in which navies were thought to be the major military
powers versus the Air Corp/Air Force in WWII with strategic bombing. I don't
know when navies began requiring sailors to be clean shaven.

On tv and movies, nothing is more bizarre than clean-shaven actors wearing
perpetual one-day growth of beard in makeup, who of course also shave
their chests.

In Victorian times the British Army required its cavalry officers to
grow mustaches. I only know this because the hero of my novel was famous
for defying this rule; there are no photographs of him at all with face
hair.

They don't categorically forbid beards even to this day -- just in
some circumstances, such as operational vessels.

None of the services requires men to be clean-shaven -- Even the Army
allows moustaches.

I think the Army ban on beards, at least in theory, is because of gas
masks.

OK, that makes no sense. Men have grown beards since before there even was
a navy. I suspect if you got back far enough, you'd find men started
shaving because in hand to hand combat, a beard, and long hair for that
matter, is a liability.

Just as likely that sailors grew beards because they were away from home
for a long time. Probably didn't have hot water or anything to shave
with except a sword. And no women around to complain about it.

the way that they want to be sanitized.

God, when we set up my parents PoAs and such, back in the 20th Century,
the legal aide that came to the house had blinding glowing white Chiclet

still remember, decades later.
I still think that those people are going to wake up one morning to find

No kidding. Or just dim 'em. "Leave something to the imagination" still

Escalating? Maybe...maybe not. Tonight's episode of WHO WANTS TO BE A
MILLIONAIRE had a question about French men in the 1700s. As it turns out,
they plucked out their eyebrow hair and then glued mouse pelts on in their
place. When I tried to look that up on the internet to verify it was
factual the first thing I came across was an article about women of the
1700s not wanting a low hairline so they smeared vinegar and cat feces on
their head and then wrapped the ointment in bandages to keep it on for
extended periods.

Well, the slathering (for various reasons) continues, but I don't know
if it involves vinegar and cat feces.

Still, it's also different these days in that women have a lot more
options and *should* be thinking of themselves as something independent
and more than just a physical commodity to be picked up by the
highest-bidding male. The fact that so many of them continue to put so
much emphasis on their own appearance simply speaks to the fact that
they can be their own worst enemies in the emancipation department.
Either that, or they just don't want to be known for more than their
looks, or to make the effort that it would take to be known for more
than their looks.

The show has so much partial male nudity and largely lacks
scantily-clad females that the male viewers they are trying to
attract must be gay. The lead character is a superhero, allegedly,
who takes the time to shave and wax his chest.
But not his face. Call me old-fashioned, but that's backwards.
And does he still do his manly workouts shirtless in the mostly dark
warehouse, lit only by the sun/moon which always seems to shine down
directly onto his chiseled torso (through a conveniently located
skylight, I guess) while leaving the rest of the warehouse in shadows?
Because that never got old in the short time that I watched the thing.
A lot of guys his age shave or wax because the young women their age
think chest hair is gross. These are probably the same women who get
Brazilians or get rid of it all because any body hair is so last century....

I assume it's in his contract. It's less painful than acting lessons.

I can only hope that he knows nothing of acting lessons, or someone
should be fired from a school somewhere.

Heh. And from I remember of the few eps that I saw, I thought that the
club was going to be somewhere else entirely. But your thought would be
consistent with what I saw and would make more sense from a lighting
perspective. Of course, given the quality of the writing of this thing,
that probably just means that Anim is correct on the particulars.

So there's just one huge halogen bulb above Ollie's playground set, or
something, and the rest of his lair just catches shadows from it? That's
a pretty crappy lighting scheme.

True. Your take on things *does* have that going for it. :)

Thank German Set Directors for this bullshit. They've been
pulling it on the Batcave since the first Keaton version of it.
Hollywood retards think it so "bad ass"... I think that anyone
successful to break into the lair and hurt/harm/kill the hero is
justified.

Darker shows like "Arrow" and "Cult" are an attempt to lure male
viewers.
Got some bad news, neither worked here. Didn't tune in to one, and one
lasted about 5 minutes, which was 4:59 TOO LONG.
