Bug#430017: kernel: Recording silence, chipset: Cirrus Logic CS 4614/22/24 [CrystalClear SoundFusion Audio Accelerator]

Package: kernel
Version: Linux 2.6.18-4-686 #1 SMP Wed May 9 23:03:12 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux
Severity: normal

As reported in this post, and its various follow-ups:

http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2007/06/msg01762.html

Microphone is set as the capture device, but when recording with
audacity, arecord, or the gnome sound recorder only silence is
recorded.

Same behaviour on two different machines, which coincidently have the
same chipset. I'm assuming that is relevant hence this bug report is
against kernel package.

Dell Precision 420 desktop:-

02:06.0 Multimedia audio controller: Cirrus Logic CS 4614/22/24 [CrystalClear SoundFusion Audio Accelerator] (rev 01)
Subsystem: Dell Unknown device 0096
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 193
Memory at fcffe000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4K]
Memory at fce00000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=1M]
Capabilities: [40] Power Management version 2

IBM Thinkpad T21 laptop:-

00:05.0 Multimedia audio controller: Cirrus Logic CS 4614/22/24 [CrystalClear SoundFusion Audio Accelerator] (rev 01)
Subsystem: IBM ThinkPad A20m
Flags: bus master, slow devsel, latency 64, IRQ 11
Memory at e8122000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4K]
Memory at e8000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=1M]
Capabilities: [40] Power Management version 2

It must be said that I have not yet had microphone working in
GNU/Linux, the above being the only two Debian machines available to
me. However, I'm pretty certain it's set up correctly:

In the Gnome volume control:
Playback tab - Microphone slider is set to 100, and not muted
Capture tab - Both sliders set to 100 and not muted
Switches tab - Microphone Capture is ticked
Options tab - Mic Select set to Mic1, Mono select set to Mic

Alternatively, using alsamixer:

In 'Capture view', above Mic is written CAPTUR, also above Capture is
written CAPTUR and the Capture slider is set to 100<>100.

In 'Playback view' the Mic slider is set to 100, and not muted [00].

With these setting, the mic sounds are heard through the PC speakers
but Audacity (or any other app) records only silence.

Does this error still occur with more recent kernel versions?

Cheers,

Hi,

Thanks for looking at this.

Does this error still occur with more recent kernel versions?
By more recent do you mean later than Etch? I do not wish to upgrade
to Lenny just now.

I am running Etch, which is kept up to date. Can I easily get a later
stable kernel to test this with?

I repeated the test and the behaviour is again as described above -
mic sounds are heard through the PC speakers but arecord records only
silence:

Hi,
Thanks for looking at this.
Post by Moritz Muehlenhoff
Does this error still occur with more recent kernel versions?
By more recent do you mean later than Etch? I do not wish to upgrade
to Lenny just now.
I am running Etch, which is kept up to date. Can I easily get a later
stable kernel to test this with?
Yes, there is one: We added an additional kernel based on 2.6.24 in the
4.0r4 point release of Debian Etch:
http://packages.qa.debian.org/l/linux-2.6.24.html

Cheers,
Moritz

Yes, there is one: We added an additional kernel based on 2.6.24 in the
http://packages.qa.debian.org/l/linux-2.6.24.html
I upgraded both machines to kernel 2.6.24-etchnhalf.1-686, and sound
now stopped working completely. The same problem happened on both
machines. When rebooted to kernel 2.6.18 the sound output does work.

gnome volume control says:
"No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found."

Multimedia Systems Selector says:
"Autodetect: Could not open resource for writing."

You can see from my previous mail that snd_cs46xx was loaded as a
module with kernel 2.6.18. After some lengthy investigation it looks
to me as though the driver was dropped for the etchnhalf kernel
release. Am I right? Is there another way to test this?

Thanks.

Hi,
You can see from my previous mail that snd_cs46xx was loaded as a
module with kernel 2.6.18. After some lengthy investigation it looks
to me as though the driver was dropped for the etchnhalf kernel
release. Am I right? Is there another way to test this?
Sorry for the late reponse. Unfortunately the driver needed to be stripped,
since we can't legally distribute the firmware.

Cheers,
Moritz

OK thanks, I understand that.

Just to be clear, this bug (430017) was raised to report a fault in
the sound driver (as per subject), not that it was subsequently
dropped from Debian.

I'd be happy to help test any fix if/when it becomes available.

Thanks.
