Since converting to the new system ( a few weeks ago) for OE as required by
microsoft, everything is OK except that I cannot send emails anymore. I get
the error box message:

"The message could not be sent because the server rejected the sender's
e-mail address. The sender's e-mail address was '***@hotmail.com'.
Subject 'Re: Wednesday Morning Alert: Breaking Stock Market News', Account:
'Hotmail (2)', Server: 'smtp.live.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response:
'530 5.7.0 Must issue a STARTTLS command first', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No,
Server Error: 530, Error Number: 0x800CCC78

The server requires a SSL connection. Account: 'Hotmail (2)', Server:
'smtp.live.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '530 5.7.0 Must issue a
STARTTLS command first', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 530, Error
Number: 0x800CCC7C "

My email ID is still the same. Would appreciate some help.

TIA

One part of each error (i.e., 'Must issue a STARTTLS command first')
suggests that your attempting to access your Hotmail account in Outlook, not
Outlook Express. Is that the case?

Whether you're accessing the account in OL or OE, try using port 587 as the
Outgoing (SMTP) port as suggested on both the OL- and OE-specific Windows
Live Help pages.

No. I have never used Outlook. Been on OE all my short life. If I have to
switch to the other port, pls tell me how to get there.
Thanks

Here's the whole shebang:

Compare your configuration settings to those listed on this page:
http://liveunplugged.spaces.live.com/Blog/cns!F92775FC46A390CA!422.entry

TIP: OE Tools | Accounts | Mail | [new Hotmail POP3 account] | Properties |
Servers | Incoming mail server | Log on using Secure Password Authentication
<=Do NOT check/enable this option!

TIP: OE Tools | Accounts | Mail | [new Hotmail POP3 account] | Properties |
Servers | Outgoing mail server | My server requires authentication
<=check/enable this option

TIP: OE Tools | Accounts | Mail | [new Hotmail POP3 account] | Properties |
Advanced:

=> Outgoing (SMTP) server port will need to be 587 (not 25) for most users
=> Incoming (POP3) server should be port 995
=> Both SSL options must be checked/enabled

TIP: Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It provides no
additional protection and it may be causing your problem.

The SMTP mail host requires you use SSL to connect to it.

'Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No'

But you did *not* enable SSL for the connects from your e-mail client.
You don't have your e-mail client properly configured to use their
e-mail service. Read:

http://windowslivehelp.com/solutions/settings/archive/2009/01/06/send-and-receive-windows-live-hotmail-emails-from-a-mail-client.aspx

Notice the paragraph that starts with "Also, our POP3 service requires".
It applies to both their POP and SMTP mail servers.

I had the same problem. The only configuration that would finally work for
me was to use the following settings on the Advanced Tab:

Outgoing mail (SMPT) = 25 (note that 587 did not work for me)

Then put in a checkmark underneath for “This server requires a secure
connection” (note that leaving this unchecked did not work for me).

These instructions are contrary to what Microsoft tells you to do, but they
are only the combination that will work for me.
