Seconded. The link gives a date range of 1940 to 1956, but no dates
on individual performances. What fraction of this still had Szigeti
in reasonably good form?

At least it will not feature the Mercury Brahms Violin Concerto from 1959.

That recording was reissued in Japan only in 1992.

Wilma Cozart Fine refused to reissue it with the official Living Presence reissues when she had control of those.
Tom Fine shared the disgust the family had when the Japanese reissued the recording; the recording was made over objections from many family members, knowing how far past his prime Szigeti was then.
I have the Japanese CD and can confirm the family's opinion.

But it's not on the list at the jpc link. I think there is also some
more 30's stuff also originally on Columbia. It's puzzling that the
stated date range starts at 1940 in a "complete Columbia" release.
It may be that the contents list is not accurate.

Warner owns practically all the Szigeti records up to 1939 and even a few after the war, such as the Bartok and Berlioz he recorded with Lambert.

Ah, thanks. So perhaps the album title should be "Complete Columbia
recordings which are still owned by Sony".

Those 30's concertos are great (I'm thinking of the Prokofiev,
Mendelssohn, Brahms), but as you noted are already well-served on Naxos.

And maybe some of the fairly late recordings are nonetheless pretty good.
(I'm very fond of his complete Bach solo set - not Columbia - which
was from, what, 1950?)

Al, those earlier recordings you mention haven’t been owned by Columbia (and never Sony) for decades! Even the 1972 released 80th birthday LP set mentions “All except Record 1, Side 1, reproduced by kind permission of Angel records, and Electric and Musical industries, Ltd.” Seems a bit strange to be chiding them for omitting them at this point. It certainly would be nice to have a comprehensive set of those earlier recordings since those Biddulph sets are long gone.

Haha, yes you've got a point. If Sony puts out an Adolf Busch/Busch Quartet set it would have to be something like "the Complete Columbia recordings plus or minus the ones that Warner forgot or couldn't remember were ours or theirs"

I think it would be helpful if everyone referred to the American record company as "Columbia Masterworks".
Although given the current political situation, we may have to drop the Columbia name completely.

There are 29 places in the U.S. named Columbia. I don't
think private company names will be in danger until the town
renamings are accomplished. It's an easier target.

There might be enough Walter Trampler material owned by Sony to make a small box. That would be welcome, while we are talking about string masters.

There are four discs of Szigeti, mostly concertos, on Naxos, and various largely out-of-print sources (Biddulph, Andante, Opus Kura) for EMI recorded sonatas and short pieces. With almost no exception, these pre-1940 discs are beautifully played and the musicianship in a league of its own. Try back-to-back listening of the 1932 Beethoven Concerto with the Heifetz-Toscanini. For phrasing, timing, imagination and conception, no comparison.

Everybody's opinion about Szigeti and when and how much he deteriorated will differ, and he was a highly variable player even in his good days.* I am mostly hoping for state-of-the-art transfers of some of the 78-era material from original lacquers, including his stupendous Bach d-minor Concerto from 1940, a performance that might make you give up HIP forever. But this will likely be the first chance many people will have had to hear his remake ten years later with Casals. Much more interesting conducting, but oh, how the playing and conception have changed and not for the good. Seriously, anything after the mid-1940s can be dicey. Part of it may be early Columbia lp "hi-fi" sound which could be unflattering to more than just Szigeti.

Depending on one's tolerance for wide vibrato and souring tone, probably about half this set. The nadir allegedly occurred with the lp of Brahms 1 & 3, actually recorded years apart, if I remember. Supposedly, it is rare because it was quickly withdrawn. Not present of course are the complete Mozart Sonatas and Bach Unaccompanied sold outright to Vanguard, and never issued by Columbia except for one Mozart disc with Szell, deleted after a couple of years.

Nonetheless, I will be in line to get this one. Now, come on, Sony, how about a complete Columbia Casals, at least the early lp era--Prades, Perpignan, Puerto Rico, etc. Marlboro doesn't fit the alliteration, and besides, it has largely been issued, although I think the Haydn Symphonies only in JP on cd.

*I am certain the indefatigable David Mendes could provide us with copious quotes about Szigeti from B. H. Haggin, including his observations about attending a Szigeti recital (miss the first piece, and maybe get out during the last one! If I remember.)

The more faceless, cookie cutter modern fiddlers I hear, the more tolerance I have for Szigeti, even when he has the wobbles and the tone sours. He was always an absorbing musician, with something to say about everything he played. It’s high time we had this collection, and I’ll be there day 1.

I can’t agree about the Mercury recordings. There are still things to admire on many of them. At one time, I might have concurred they should be left un-reissued, but that’s ok....everyone to their taste.

Oy.
There is an urban legend he missed other flights that then crashed and was investigated by the FBI. Rather farfetched, but the Lombard story is true and was documented at the time. In other words, instead of 1892-1972, it could well have been 1892-1942!

I have noticed that none of these have had what I call a full "mock up" (knowledgeable folk let me know the correct term) of the contents, including the box and sample CD covers. Until I see one of those, I put no value of projected release dates. Ormandy I am guessing will be closer to March 2022 at this rate.

That may mean that Amazon's price will come down. The date has
remained stable for a few weeks. Presto has the date as March 26,
but strangely lists the pre-order price as $100.
Now in stock at Presto (release date shown is April 2), still $100.

Amazon still shows April 9 and a pre-order price of $60.
At ImportCDs a search for "Szigeti" does not find it, yet, weirdly,
Randy's link still shows it, still with that low pre-order price.
I suspect Amazon's price will come down or else ImportCDs price will go
up when it is released in the US.

Release Date 12/11/2020
Was moved to 1/21/2021, now 2/26/2021. Anybody think the 120-CD
Ormandy set is really coming out in March? Or the twice-delayed
Rodzinski set in April? Well, maybe that one. But I think Sony looks
on these dates as "aspirational" . . .
Mark O-T
Now moved yet again to 3/26/2021. This suggests that the Ormandy box,
now scheduled for March, may also be delayed.

I pay no attention to the first through fifth different issue dates
announced. Wasn't the Walter box almost 6 months late, even pre-COVID?
JPC now has an August 15 release date. This year of course, before someone asks!
DH
US Amazon now lists the Szigeti box for April 9 release date. $59.98
I pre-ordered it.
Does anyone know of a significantly lower price?
It is only $43.85 at ImportCDs.com

ImportCDs doesn't list Szigeti in the title for some reason. You have to search on "Columbia" and then sort by "Available Date - Newest". Then you'll see this, as well as the Rodzinski and Ormandy sets.

WTF?
Someone at Amazon is playing with a random date generator. My Amazon notice (rec'd yesterday) reads: "New estimated delivery date: Wednesday, May 12, 2021 - Thursday, June 10, 2021." I have what to listen to, and the funny thing is that I'm pretty sure that I already have everything in the Szigeti box in one form or another. Just for fun, I also pre-ordered the Juilliard SQ monos from the ever-dependable JPC. Oh boy, another kvetching opportunity awaits :-)

I don't think we have enough evidence to prove that importcds gives preference to those who have paid with paypal than a credit card. But if you think about it, why is first come, first served ethically superior to giving preference to those who have actually been separated from their cash?

Oh boy, another kvetching opportunity awaits :-)
It never ceases to amaze how frequently very long threads are made about ordering these megaboxes and when they will ship and arrive, and who gets the best deal.
It never ceases to amaze me how frequently you comment on this particular topic. Not everyone cares about what you care about, and people care about stuff that you don't care about. It's about being human.
Paypal -- doubtless riding the wave of Ormandy /Szigeti e-commerce -- was up 2.5% in today's trading.
I don't think we have enough evidence to prove that importcds gives preference to those who have paid with paypal than a credit card. But if you think about it, why is first come, first served ethically superior to giving preference to those who have actually been separated from their cash?
Well, Amazon lowered the price in my cart but didn't advance the shipping date. In the meantime, ArkivMusic has the Szigeti box listed as in stock and on sale for $42.99 this weekend. They charge shipping but no tax. Ordered from Arkiv; cancelled Amazon. Now we'll see.... The excitement mounts <NOT>. In general, btw, I agree with Herman: this is a really stupid topic, which is why I am happy to contribute to it :-)

In CA, the state relies on taxpayers to pay a "use tax" (with their
income tax form) in lieu of a not-charg3d sales tax. (Some years back
the state won a battle with Amazon to bwet them to charge the tax,
which makes things easier for honest taxpayers.) No such thing in
NJ (or is it NY)?

17 CDs
Release Date 12/11/2020
Was moved to 1/21/2021, now 2/26/2021. Anybody think the 120-CD
Ormandy set is really coming out in March? Or the twice-delayed
Rodzinski set in April? Well, maybe that one. But I think Sony looks
on these dates as "aspirational" . . .
Mark O-T
Now moved yet again to 3/26/2021. This suggests that the Ormandy box,
now scheduled for March, may also be delayed.
Mark O-T
I pay no attention to the first through fifth different issue dates
announced. Wasn't the Walter box almost 6 months late, even pre-COVID?
JPC now has an August 15 release date. This year of course, before
someone asks!
DH
US Amazon now lists the Szigeti box for April 9 release date. $59.98
I pre-ordered it.
Does anyone know of a significantly lower price?
It is only $43.85 at ImportCDs.com
https://www.importcds.com/complete-columbia-album/190759403525
I thought I had posted that, but perhaps just an intent. :)
--
Al Eisner
ImportCDs doesn't list Szigeti in the title for some reason. You have to search on "Columbia" and then sort by "Available Date - Newest". Then you'll see this, as well as the Rodzinski and Ormandy sets.
Mark O-T
Presto Classical has some of the discs available for download. That is probably the best sign the physical product will be available soon.
DH
As noted, Presto also claims to have the CD set in stock; they seem
generally reliable about such things.
--
Al Eisner
At this point I am wondering if any of us who ordered it at 59.98 will ever actually get it at this price.
DH
I pre ordered from ImportCDs.com on 02/27 for $43.35
It showed as In Stock for much of the day yesterday, but is back ordered again now.
I am confident my order was pulled from stock yesterday and I will get the shipment confirmation today.
$59.98? Hope not. Too high for 16 CDs. Almost $4 per disk.
I ordered it from importCDs two days ago for $41.79 plus sales tax plus $2.99
shipping. No Payal. I received shipping confirmation today.
--
Al Eisner
Looks like ImportCDs isn't very good at being sure orders are fulfilled by order date. My order was placed Feb. 27, at a slightly higher price than Al's, and I have not received shipment confirmation.
Shipped today
I ordered the Szigeti box from Amazon April 6. Their web site says they have one in stock yet I got an e-mail today saying expected delivery is now May 6 - June 1.
WTF?
Amazon doesn't have one in stock; Green Orbit, whatever that is, has it. I say hang tight and you will probably have it much sooner. I got the same message.

Everything looks good except somebody dropped the ball on the "original jackets" for CD 1 & CD 2.
- these are 78s, so according to Sony's usual pattern, these should be beige jackets with a 78rpm label on the front and track listing on the back,
but someone forgot the track listing on the back, and the 78rpm label just says "Early Recordings", so there is no useful information on these jackets.
No clue as to the composers - you have to keep the booklet handy.

17 CDs
Release Date 12/11/2020
Was moved to 1/21/2021, now 2/26/2021. Anybody think the 120-CD
Ormandy set is really coming out in March? Or the twice-delayed
Rodzinski set in April? Well, maybe that one. But I think Sony looks
on these dates as "aspirational" . . .
Mark O-T
Now moved yet again to 3/26/2021. This suggests that the Ormandy box,
now scheduled for March, may also be delayed.
Mark O-T
I pay no attention to the first through fifth different issue dates
announced. Wasn't the Walter box almost 6 months late, even pre-COVID?
JPC now has an August 15 release date. This year of course, before
someone asks!
DH
US Amazon now lists the Szigeti box for April 9 release date. $59.98
I pre-ordered it.
Does anyone know of a significantly lower price?
It is only $43.85 at ImportCDs.com
https://www.importcds.com/complete-columbia-album/190759403525
I thought I had posted that, but perhaps just an intent. :)

WTF?
They have placed a hold for the amount of the Szigeti box on my card, so I should have it by the end of the week at worst. Maybe you will get it soon.
My Szigeti box from Arkiv arrived today ($42.99 + $4.45 shipping, no sales tax).
Amazon still shows my order has arriving 5/4-5/5
My ImportCDs order arrived a week ago today, 04/19.
Received the Szigeti box today. Ordered from Amazon. Packaged in a slightly padded envelope that did not prevent some damage to the box's corners nor protect the jewel case on another CD enclosed therein. Fortunately, I'm not very anal about this sort of thing. Grrr.

I don't recall a box not being sent in a box. I don't mind the slight damage as much as I mind knowing that there are people in the world stupid enough not to know you have to protect the merchandise. The more so, the more valuable it is.

But I have gotten stuff like that too.
Frustrating.
I got my Ormandy box the other day, which I ordered from Amazon.de out of desperation. Came triple-boxed, which was a marvel, yet it still had a mashed corner that appeared to have happened in transit. Not big enough to worry about, of course. But still, shipping these things is a puzzle. I've received boxes that were loose in a larger box that had several plastic "balloons" so the box was easily bouncing around in it, and the condition was perfect, when it should have bene destroyed.

CALLING ALL VIOLINISTS: A ROMANI QUIZ
(don't use the G word)
Sony posted Szigeti CD 2 tracks 4 & 5 on YouTube, labelled as Hubay Scènes de la Csárda No.4 "Hejre Kati" Op. 32 (parts one & two)

Four reputable dealers agree that it is "Hejre Kati":
JPC.de:
https://www.jpc.de/jpcng/classic/detail/-/art/complete-box-set/hnum/9023806
Musicweb international:
http://musicweb-international.com/classrev/2021/Apr/Szigeti-Columbia-19075940352.htm
Presto Classical:
https://www.prestomusic.com/classical/products/8874245--joseph-szigeti-the-complete-sony-recordings
Europadisc:
https://www.europadisc.co.uk/classical/151045/Joseph_Szigeti:_The_Complete_Columbia_Album_Collection.htm

But Sony's booklet claims that CD 2 tracks 4 & 5 are actually Hubay Scène de la csárda No.3 ‘Maros vize’ Op.18 (parts one & two)
ArkivMusic agrees with Sony's booklet that it is "Maros vize"
https://www.arkivmusic.com/products/complete-columbia-album-various-box-397319

So .... is it Hejre Katje Op.32 or Maros vize Op.18?
(I already know, but do you?)

Brahms:

[4-7] Violin Sonata No.3
Mieczyslaw Horszowski piano (1951,1956)

Another problem: The CD jackets are not numbered, so you will need to buy some stickers.

Arrived perfect.
One Columbia LP is missing from this collection: Mozart Sonatas K.454 & 481 with George Szell piano, recorded in 1955.

Each CD and Jacket is numbered. How do you think they assemble the packages if some have to be done/corrected manually?

Steve
I looked again, but still can't find the numbers printed on the jacket.
(I'm referring to CD numbers 1-18, not the original LP catalog numbers).
More importantly, there is an error in my listing:
Alexander plays violin in BWV1044, not Szigeti:
CD 9 Bach at the Prades Festival, Pablo Casals conducting, 1950:
[1-3] Concerto for Flute, Violin And Keyboard BWV1044
------- with Alexander Schneider violin (not Szigeti), John Wummer flute, Mieczyslaw Horszowski piano
[4-6] Violin Concerto reconstructed after keyboard concerto BWV1052
[7-9] Brandenburg Concerto No.5 BWV1050
------- with John Wummer flute, Eugene Istomin piano

On the discs themselves, on the label side, in the black "vinyl" area, where the "runoff" is, should be the catalog number of the box, with a suffix indicating the disc number, like 880235784949-12 for Disc 12. This same long number should be on the back of the CD sleeve, either on the bottom, or lower right. If there's printing on the spine itself, the number is usually prominently shows, like "CD 12".

I don't have this set but it's what I've seen in every other Sony Original Jacket format with black "vinyl" discs.

You can zoom in on the promotional picture and see numbering is not there. The jackets appear to be perfect replicas of the LP covers. Not clear why with only 18 CDs you really need that. The Ormandy box, sure.

Each CD and Jacket is numbered. How do you think they assemble the packages if some have to be done/corrected manually?
Steve
I looked again, but still can't find the numbers printed on the jacket.
(I'm referring to CD numbers 1-18, not the original LP catalog numbers).
These jackets are the thin ones that don't include info on the spines.
You can zoom in on the promotional picture and see numbering is not there. The jackets appear to be perfect replicas of the LP covers. Not clear why with only 18 CDs you really need that.
You need to put information on there for legal purposes, like (c) and (p) dates and copyright owner

Those links do not work, I probably don't have access, but here's a link to the'back of Szigeti Disk 6 with the Disk # clearly visible. All Sony/RCA original jacket issues work like this.

Confusion: I just noticed that disc 9 (Bach at the Prades Festival) clearly has the words "Vol. 8" printed in the upper right corner.
Volume 8 of course refers to its position in the original LP release seventy years ago.

17 CDs
Release Date 12/11/2020
Was moved to 1/21/2021, now 2/26/2021. Anybody think the 120-CD
Ormandy set is really coming out in March? Or the twice-delayed
Rodzinski set in April? Well, maybe that one. But I think Sony looks
on these dates as "aspirational" . . .
Mark O-T
Now moved yet again to 3/26/2021. This suggests that the Ormandy box,
now scheduled for March, may also be delayed.
Mark O-T
I pay no attention to the first through fifth different issue dates
announced. Wasn't the Walter box almost 6 months late, even pre-COVID?
JPC now has an August 15 release date. This year of course, before
someone asks!
DH
US Amazon now lists the Szigeti box for April 9 release date. $59.98
I pre-ordered it.
Does anyone know of a significantly lower price?
It is only $43.85 at ImportCDs.com
https://www.importcds.com/complete-columbia-album/190759403525
I thought I had posted that, but perhaps just an intent. :)

Al Eisner
Looks like ImportCDs isn't very good at being sure orders are fulfilled by order date. My order was placed Feb. 27, at a slightly higher price than Al's, and I have not received shipment confirmation.
The message also contains this sentence:"Prices above are subject to change".
I don't know what that is about. Anyway, it does include a USPS
travcking number, and, using that, USPS gives me an expect3d
delivery of April 21. (I'll believe that wheb I see it!) So maybe
I lucked out with ImportCDs,

A couple of days ago I received a request from Amazon to "reconfirm" my pre-order of March 7 @ $59.98 + tax, which I did. No indication of a shipping date, however. The updated invoice reads, "We will email you when we have an estimated delivery date."
