Discussion:
Still more grocery store packaging is racist

Grocer Trader Joe's is well known for its innovative marketing and
packaging of food it sells under store brands. The packaging is often
rather clever, even if the food isn't especially tasty.

It's ethnic foods are sold under cutesy names like Trader Ming's, Trader
Jose, Trader Giotto, and Arab Joe.

A California high school girl Briones Bedell started a change.org petition
to remove racist branding and packaging that's been signed by 1400 people.

Bedell wrote that some of the company's ethnic food labels "belies a
narrative of exoticism that perpetuates harmful stereotypes."

Exotic? Sound liks your basic marketing to me.

The grocers claims they were already in the process of updating their
store branding. Sure.

So, showing a grove filled with orange trees would now be considered "exotic" way of illustrating Florida?

I can't tell you how often I've tried food there for the first time due
to the clever packaging and then have been disappointed with the bland
food.

No clue

I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop that the girl is the daughter of
an executive of a rival grocer.

have the nastiest of all ice creams, Neapolitan.

I don't go there for pie, so haven't been looking for it. I like the 3
Buck Chuck wines (up from 2 bucks) and the Spanish wine selections. I'm
not even sure they have the ginger cookies anymore, that was 25 years ago.

Probably because they don't sell it anymore. Could be the people on
Amazon are ripping off TJ's name.

Interesting that they have two different products based off the same
idea. The Old World Recipe Cookie Thins with Triple Ginger

https://www.amazon.com/Trader-Joes-Cookie-Triple-Ginger/dp/B008IT1ZRC/

and then the Trader Joes Triple Ginger Snaps

https://www.amazon.com/Trader-Joes-Triple-Ginger-Xlarge/dp/B00785JSEO/

Now that's not so unusual for most companies but I thought Trader Joes
always tried to limit their variety because of the smaller store size.

A little feedback for you (or is it 'eat-back'?): I spotted "Triple
Ginger Cookie Thins"' at TJ's and, though I don't much like ginger
snaps, got some onnacounta the enthusiasm here. Only the twin packaging
saved me from going through the whole box at once. So, yet another
thing for my self-deprivation to feel virtuous about...

Grocer Trader Joe's is well known for its innovative
marketing and
packaging of food it sells under store brands. The packaging is often
rather clever, even if the food isn't especially tasty.
I like that last part a lot :D
I can't tell you how often I've tried food there for the first time due
to the clever packaging and then have been disappointed with the bland
food.
Their bargain wines are pretty good though.
How's the pie?
Never had it. Not sure they even have any. The ginger snap cookies are
addictive though.
Website flyer shows

and ... everything else. I don't think the search function works. They also
have the nastiest of all ice creams, Neapolitan.
I don't go there for pie, so haven't been looking for it. I like the 3
Buck Chuck wines (up from 2 bucks) and the Spanish wine selections. I'm
not even sure they have the ginger cookies anymore, that was 25 years ago.
https://www.amazon.com/Trader-Joes-Triple-Ginger-cookies/dp/B007PKBH2I
But that's on Amazon! And for twice the price, but I don't think
they're the same. It didn't say triple ginger on the packages.
They are good, aren't they? I could be misremembering the naming, or
they've updated it, that was 25 years agi,

Hitler liked grocery store packaging, he used it all the time.

The Trader Joe's in Cambirdge, MA had the TJ triple ginger snaps at
least as of seven years ago. I haven't looked for them more recently
than that. I'm not a ginger snap fan, though I have to admit, as far as
ginger snaps go, they were the best I ever had. Intense flavor, lots of
ginger. I used to get them for a roommate when I trekked in to
Cambridge.

I've sampled various things at Trader Joe's over the years with varying
amounts of pleasure. The two things that I consistently go back for are
the mushroom brie cheese and their dark chocolate covered almonds.
Sometimes they'll offer a free sample of a cheese-of-the-week, and if I
like it, I'll get some. Good marketing.

No more free samples in the time of Covid... (:-()
Back to the original topic of this thread, that TJ's was going to drop
the "Trader José's" etc branding, they announced yesterday that they are
*not* going to do that.

Thanks for bringing it up. I cannot believe it took them over two weeks
to realize that using cute names in their own marketing isn't racist.

Yes, probably their best recent flavor. But the one I had to
self-ration (to keep from having to buy new pants) was 'Salted Caramel
Gelato'. I'm almost glad they seem to have discontinued it.

Yes, Chess pie is common in the South. It's kind of a custard pie, with
some variations made with molasses like pecan pie.

Yes. I have friends who swear by the place, but I've always been singularly
unimpressed. It doesn't help that mine is in the same mall area as the best
supermarket in town, so why would I stop there?

Jose, Trader Giotto, and Arab Joe.
A California high school girl Briones Bedell started a change.org petition
to remove racist branding and packaging that's been signed by 1400 people.
Bedell wrote that some of the company's ethnic food labels "belies a
narrative of exoticism that perpetuates harmful stereotypes."
Exotic? Sound liks your basic marketing to me.
The grocers claims they were already in the process of updating their
store branding. Sure.
https://abcnews.go.com/US/trader-joes-change-product-branding-petition-call
s-racist/story?id=71868367
Is this the first time anybody actually did anything because of change.org?
No clue
I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop that the girl is the daughter of
an executive of a rival grocer.
Yeah, I looked her up and found no history; apparently she's the name of
musical instruments for kids.

Of the Chinese food, I tried the potstickers. They were ok but don't
duplicate the experience in a restaurant that makes its own wonton

One of the things he highly recommended was the Trader Joe dumplings.

Yep. It's about the only place I buy wine these days. Not their

when I saw the water turn blue when rinsing out red wine dregs!

That's exactly my experience too. First time we went in to the store, it
was a very impressive showcase of items. However, the experience of
actually eating the stuff was a huge disappointment.

rather clever, even if the food isn't especially tasty.
I like that last part a lot :D
I can't tell you how often I've tried food there for the first time due
to the clever packaging and then have been disappointed with the bland
food.
That's exactly my experience too. First time we went in to the store, it
was a very impressive showcase of items. However, the experience of
actually eating the stuff was a huge disappointment.
Yeah, there was a lot of stuff that sounded good, like vacuum sealed avocado
halves that kept all year 'round and you could see if they were ripe but once
you opened it you'd just as soon take your chances with the real thing.

Sure.

Is this the first time anybody actually did anything because of change.org?
Bwah!

Has anyone noticed that the name 'Trader Joe's' itself "belies a
narrative of provincialism that perpetuates a domestic stereotype"?

That occurred to me, too! And then there's "Ol' Black Joe"... Uh Oh.

Trader Joe's may be the most sincerely sensitive retailer I patronize.
I almost suspect this "online-petition" to be a false-flag complaint --
say, to get people thinking maybe George Floyd really *could* breathe...

(Sorry. In this instance even *I* thought it might be too strained.)

My reaction to the TJ complaint was that it's the work of far-too-idle
minds. But then, theorizing conspiratorially, I saw that somebody who
wanted to undermine "progressive liberal" thinking (such as "Floyd was
murdered") might pretend to be a prog, and make protests so patently
over-the-top that ordinary folks would consider them a "last straw".

Ahh. I'm afraid that's probably not necessary. I think it wise to
admit that there are nuts on the left side of the aisle, too, if mostly
rather less violent that those on the other. The wholesale revision
madness currently gripping some sectors is just that -- craziness.
One needs to learn from history, not obliterate it (or repeat...).

There's a sculptor in the Bay Area creating a powerful work against
the history of repression and cruelty (with no display home yet), and
he also rails against the destruction of *any* statue. Informative
plaques are much more helpful.

Only if you hit someone whose mind is closed upon the head with it.
Vandalism and destruction requires no thought, just misdirected anger.

You and logic have been been in the same room together. This "we" you
are talking about are other members of your, er, club.

moviePig starts out by writing something that isn't stupid. It's a false
flag operation, say, to trick people into may believing that moviePig is
capable of expressing a thought without profound STOOPID and lies and
hatefulness and on point.

Exotic? Sound liks your basic marketing to me.

Will Trump ban the Jewish filth that populates the shelves of Walmart?

Jews deserve to be shipped to Israel on the samne boat that sends the niggers
