Uninstall and reinstall of SBS Monitoring - fails on Reinstall

Hello All,

I have had some issues with the Monitoring Component of SBS, and uninstalled
it via Control panel >Windows Small Business Server Setup. After rebooting,
the reinstall gave me the following error: "An error occurred while
installing Health Monitor. Rerun Setup, and retry installing Health Monitor."

Machine info: SBS 2003 Premium, upgraded to SP1

Steps already tried to resolve the issue:
1. Reboot
2. From another post by Mariëtte Knap: "Clear out the %temp% and register
wizchain.dll before running setup again

regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Windows for Small Business
Server\Administration\wizchain.dll" "
Tried install after step #2, same message as above
3. Uninstalled SBS Monitoring MSDE instance from Control panel, Renamed the
MSSQL$SBSMONITORING folder under C:\Program Files\MSSQL\, and rebooted.
Same result as above.

I would really appreciate any shared wisdom.

Dave

V. Please check there is no entry named Microsoft Health Monitor 2.1 in the
Add/Remove programs. If there is, please click to remove it. Then, please
check the C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\HealthMonitor folder is deleted. If not,

Hello All,
I have had some issues with the Monitoring Component of SBS, and
uninstalled
it via Control panel >Windows Small Business Server Setup. After
rebooting,
the reinstall gave me the following error: "An error occurred while
installing Health Monitor. Rerun Setup, and retry installing Health
Monitor."
Machine info: SBS 2003 Premium, upgraded to SP1
1. Reboot
2. From another post by Mariëtte Knap: "Clear out the %temp% and
register
wizchain.dll before running setup again
regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Windows for Small Business
Server\Administration\wizchain.dll" "
Tried install after step #2, same message as above
3. Uninstalled SBS Monitoring MSDE instance from Control panel, Renamed
the
MSSQL$SBSMONITORING folder under C:\Program Files\MSSQL\, and rebooted.
Same result as above.
I would really appreciate any shared wisdom.

Dave

Hi Jenny,
When I followed the previous post instructions about removing the sql
instance for sbsmonitoring, removing the 2 reg keys, deleting the
healthmonitor folder, I noticed after the next attempted install, none of
these folders were recreated and the registry keys were missing. It
appears the install doesn't even get that far!
During the install process, the SBS Setup asks for CD3 - this is the
original install media, not SP1 media¡ (The server has been upgraded to
SP1, as it was installed in the pre-SP1 days) - Is this a factor? If so,
how do we get around it?
Here are the screenshots
I will not have a chance to reboot the server in safe mode until perhaps
tomorrow or next week. Thanks for your continued patience!

Hi Dave,
Thanks for using the SBS newsgroup.
From your description, I understand the issue to be: the monitoring
component failed to install and received error message. If I am off base,
please don't hesitate to let me know.
For current situation, I would suggest we use the following steps to
totally reinstall monitoring and test this issue again.
I. Uninstall Monitoring
1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove
Programs.
2. Select Windows Small Business Server 2003 and then click
Change/Remove. The Setup Wizard appears.
3. Click Next to start the wizard.
4. On the Windows Configuration page, click Next.
5. On the Component Selection page, in the Action column, change
Server Tools to Maintenance, change Monitoring component to Remove, and
then click Next.
6. On the Component Summary page, click Next.
7. Click Finish.
II. Uninstall Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (SBSMONITORING)
In Add or Remove Programs, select Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine
(SBSMONITORING) and then click Remove. A dialog box appears. To confirm
that you want to remove, click Yes.
III. Rename the folder
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$SBSMONITORING
to C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\Old.MSSQL$SBSMONITORING
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\SmallBusinessServer\Monitoring
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\SBSMonitoring
V. Please check there is no entry named Microsoft Health Monitor 2.1 in
the
Add/Remove programs. If there is, please click to remove it. Then, please
check the C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\HealthMonitor folder is deleted. If
not,
please delete it.
VI. Install the Monitoring component
1. In Add or Remove Programs, select Windows Small Business Server
2003 and then click Change/Remove. The Setup Wizard appears.
2. Click Next.
3. On the Windows Configuration page, click Next.
4. On the Component Selection page, in the Action column, change
Server Tools to Maintenance, change Monitoring component to Install, and
then click Next.
5. On the Logon Information page, click Next.
6. On the Component Summary page, click Next.
7. Click Finish.
What is the result? If the issue persists, please compress the logs in
the
following folder into a zip file and send it to me at
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Integration\Windows Small Business Server
2003\Logs
Hope above information helps! I am happy to be of assistance to you and
look forward to your reply!

Hi David,

Thank you for emailing us the log files!

From the Monitoring setup log file, I found the following error:

MSI (s) (3C:30) [16:40:10:307]: Note: 1: 2203 2: x:\36d7fa231e131f8d73c10c9add0663\cd3\sbs\monitor\monitoring.msi 3: -2147287037
MSI (s) (3C:30) [16:40:10:307]: SOURCEMGMT: Source is invalid due to missing/inaccessible package.

Based on my experience, this issue can occur if the SBS CD#3 is corrupted or the files in the CD is not readable. I would suggest you contact the SBS reseller or our Sales
Office to get a replacement of the CDs. Then you can perform Jenny's original suggestion to reinstall the Monitoring component.

Thank you for your time!

Hi Cliff,

Thanks for getting back to me in Jenny's absence.

I checked the two registry keys that you specified, and they were both still
gone (I had deleted them per Jenny's instructions).

I also copied CD3 to the c:\ drive, and tried the install again (thinking:
if the cd was damaged, it would not copy a file properly etc.)

I did some more digging in other forums, and have tried two things:
1. CD33 \helathmon21\I386\setup.exe - installed no problems, then running
the SBS install, an error message came up about an issue installing the MSDE
- I then researched that message in the forums, and found the following:

(From Brandy Nee [MSFT], post on 11/6/2005)
3. Run the integrated Setup again and try to install.

If the above steps still does not work, please continue the following steps.

1). Create a folder C:\MSDE
2). Copy setup.exe, setup.ini, setup.rll, sqlresld.dll from
CD3\SBS\MONITOR\MSDE, and SqlRun05.msi, SqlRun.cab to C:\MSDE
3). Go to a command prompt, type

C:\msde>setup /i sqlRun05.msi instancename="MSDE05" SAPWD="StrongPWD"
securitymode=sql /L*v c:\msde\msde.log

This installed properly. - I then re-ran the SBS install for monitoring, and
was successful, with a message that an earlier version of files has been
copied over older versions, and I should re-run the latest SBS service pack
(SP1).

Are there any important things to keep in mind when reinstalling the SP1 on
SBS?

I look forward to your response!

Hello Cliff, Jenny, Forum readers,

I was able to get Monitoring working 100% today - After the reinstallation
of SBS 2003 SP1 (CD2 if you ordered the CD's!)

After the reboot I had to go to Services.msc and change the SBSSHAREPOINT
service from Disabled to Automatic.

Thank you for all your help and suggestions... I hope this forum thread is
helpful to others having the same errors and problems.
