Discussion:
"Do I Sleep or Wake" (Herbert) mystery

God willing, reviews of _The Eyes of Heisenberg_ (Herbert) and
_Mortal Fear_ (Cook), along with a short intro to genetic engineering
will appear on my website in the near future. My _Eyes_ notes indicate
that it embellishes a story titled "Do I Sleep Or Wake," which
supposedly appears in a 1965 _Galaxy_. [1]
Other evidence [2][3] suggests that _Destination: Void_ expanded the
short. The August 1965 issue from my incomplete collection of _Galaxy_
contains a Herbert called "Do I Wake or Dream?" A quick perusal of a
_Void_ synopsis and the short convinces me that they share story
elements. _Void_, rather than _Eyes_, seems like the apropos expansion
of "Do I Wake or Dream?"
Does anyone know anything about the elusive "Do I Sleep Or Wake?"
Or, is the whole thing a big old sfnal SNAFU?

Note.

Allow me to further note that this excerpt appears on the copyright page
of my 1966 edition of _Eyes_:

/A different version of this novel appeared in GALAXY,/

The book referenced in [1] is the 1976 edition, which indicates that
the "Do I Sleep or Wake" reference is not a mistake nor typo. Perhaps
it's a standalone novel published by Galaxy?

publication from 1965. But no traces of it seem to exist. It's beginning
to look a lot like a print media SNAFU carried down through the years.
One that goes back two hundred years to John Keats:
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ode_to_a_Nightingale>

"Adieu! adieu! thy plaintive anthem fades
Past the near meadows, over the still stream,
Up the hill-side; and now 'tis buried deep
In the next valley-glades:
Was it a vision, or a waking dream?
Fled is that music? do I wake or sleep?"

I hesitate to say that "many" (515, in Google)
who "should know better", misquote the last line
or half line on its own as "Do I wake or dream?"
That may be done, but of special interest is:

<https://poemanalysis.com/ode-to-a-nightingale-by-john-keats-poem-analysis/>

which does that one paragraph after quoting the
entire poem up down to "wake or sleep".

So an alternative interpretation is that an
alternative version of the poem is circulating.
I'll ask there... "This comment is awaiting
moderation."

Well then - to multiply infuriation -

A belated note; you quoted the last line as "Do I wake or dream?" but the poem is shown ending (and rhyming) "Do I wake or sleep?" It's much the same thing - "dream" is in the previous line - but I'm curious if another version of the poem is about. A select group of people are remembering it, at least, as "Do I wake or dream?"

I'm going to infuriate fans of late science fiction writer Frank Herbert, in particular, by mentioning that a "complete novel" by him evidently appeared in magazine "Galaxy", August 1965, titled "Do I Wake Or Dream?" It's on the cover.

In 1966, "Galaxy" serialised his novel "Heisenberg's Eyes" across two issues, which also appeared in book form that year as "The Eyes of Heisenberg", while the other "Galaxy" story also appeared solo, with or without further editing, as "Destination: Void". But 1966 and 1976 editions of "Eyes Of" state in copyright - I'm told - that "A different version of this novel appeared in GALAXY, under the title 'Do I Sleep or Wake'." Oops. And that was "Void", not "Eyes".

And anyone who searches for this information will find it here, with no cited references at all. However... the "ISFDB" catalogue web site provides another credible by looking up title "Do I Sleep Or Wake".

Coda: is any of this quoted -by- John Keats from any other work? Shakespeare or Chaucer or something. I'm wondering if people have been muddled for just two hundred years, or even longer than that. Lead on, Macduff. :-)

Good question. Even odds says the Keats quote originates elsewhere.
Excellent sleuthing on your part! The June and August editions of
Galaxy serialize _Eyes_ under the title of _Heisenberg's Eyes_. Not only
do the MMPB dead tree versions of _Eyes_ contain a misattribution, they
also munge Keats in the process.

"No good deed goes unpunished."

The gist of this latest information will be included in my upcoming
review. It's an Easter egg for those in the know.

'Do I sleepor wake?' is a simple enough line to have been invented
independently multiple times. There's a line in the 10th book of the Decameron
which is often translated to this.

However, more immediate is Lord Alfred Douglas' homoerotic[1] "Hymn to Physical
Beauty", which ends

"Come down and save us; let the world reborn
Be glad again. Our hearts are barren fountains,
Come down like rain. Ah! do I sleep or wake?
Methinks I hear thy feet upon the mountains;
And ere the red sun stoops and drinks the lake
Haply my aching eyes shall see thy dawn."

[1] Douglas also first penned 'The love that dare not speak its name.'

I'll set down this from "The Comedy of Errors," believing I haven't muddled it after these years: Our Lead, after some of these comic contratempts says, continuing a rhyme from another's line, "Am I on Earth, in Heaven, or in Hell? Dreaming or waking? Mad or well advised? Known to these others, and to myself disguised? I'll say as they say, and persever so, and in this mist, at all adventures go!"

If you believe that, you will believe anything. ;-)

and the key word is "persever".

"Sleeping or waking", apparently. Missed indeed. :-)

And as C. S. Lewis's professor didn't say,
it seems that this was all in Plautus.
But I got that from Wikipedia.

Well, maybe not line for line in Plautus, but
why not?

That exact text is on the copyright page of my copy of _Destination:
Void_ (Penguin books, 1985 reprint of 1967 publication). It appears the
title is wrong, then, and the Galaxy version was called _Do I Wake or
Dream?_?

The text is not found in my copy of _The Eyes of Heisenberg_ (NEL,

Didn't know about the SNAFU.

Oh, YASID:

I think I just saw a sci-fi film trail, probably
TV movie at best, in a recording of "Star Trek"
from last year, or earlier. I missed the title,
but as far as I can gather, a large number of
people are contained in what they believe is
a generation and/or hibernation space ship
carrying them from Earth to a new home planet.
This is not the case. This thread reminded me
of it.

Does anyone know what this is, and what's going
on? I don't think I missed a chance to watch
"The Starlost", but I don't rule it out.

And a hibernation (people asleep - KHAN !) episode, "Space Seed".

I don't think he's referring to a Star Trek episode.

'Ascension' was a Syfy channel mini-series from 2014 that fits the
"Don't know they aren't on a generation ship" description.

Star Trek (the original) had both a generation (people awake) ship
episode, "For the World Is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky".

"Ascension!" The very word is like a bell.
Yes, it chimes. Thank you!

But is it any good? Hmm... rated "7.2 out of 10".
I have definitely watched worse than that.

Pictures and videos offered from the show seem to
provide many scenes with elegant ladies looking
elegant. I expect that this helps the rating up.
I'm not quite sure it fits the scenario, but
on the other hand the Star Trek episodes with
Voyager's holodeck set to "Hawaii" just went by.

The whole thing doesn't make a whole lot of sense and when finally
something interesting starts to happen it ends.

The Ascension project was launched close on the heels of Kennedy's challenge. The women's place is as hostesses or stewardesses. There was a short cycle '60s TV shows advertising, "they were terribly sexist! Want to see what they did?" Put me in mind of old Biblical Epics with the sins of the pagans.

It's a three-episode miniseries. The first episode is interesting. The
second episode is more interesting. The third episode crumbles under
the strain and explodes for no adequately explained reason.
