Islam is the name of the final revelation that forms the last of many in

Kepler was compelled to abandon the centuries-old obsession with
circular motion. His respect for the facticity of nature meant that a
discrepancy of a mere eight minutes of arc between the observed and
calculated positions of the planet Mars was sufficient to require him to
produce a new model of planetary orbits. 'I WAS ALMOST DRIVEN TO MADNESS
IN CONSIDERING AND CALCULATING THIS MATTER', he wrote, but in the end he
discovered that the orbit of Mars was an ellipse. After centuries of
belief in the circle as a symbol of heavenly perfection he made this
[foundational] discovery with great reluctance. 'I HAVE LAID A MONSTROUS
EGG', he remarked.
Kepler’s discovery can be viewed as a triumph of empiricism over
dogmatism. Nevertheless it reflected the deep connection between
scientific and theological thinking that was characteristic of the age.
In that the ellipse could be said to be a mixture of a circle
(symbolising the spiritual) and a straight line (associated with the
material), Kepler regarded an elliptical orbit as one in which the ideal
circularity has been diluted with a small degree of straightness, a
consequence of the materiality of the planets. Furthermore, he insisted
that planetary
motions were the result of a real physical force, emanating from the
sun, thus providing the germ of an idea for Newton's (25 December 1642 –
20 March 1726/27 as Old and New Style Calendar) work on gravitation.
For Kepler geometry provided a powerful key to understanding the entire
created world. Indeed, he claimed that 'GEOMETRY EXISTED BEFORE THE

Another part of Kepler's theological concern was that Scripture be
interpreted aright, so that no conflict should appear between the 'BOOK
OF SCRIPTURE' and the 'book of Nature’'. If the Reformation saw
Protestants and Catholics striving to outdo each other in defending the
authority of Scripture, this did not inhibit criticism of naive
literalism. Indeed, writing in the same vein as John Calvin (10 July
1509 - 27 May 1564), Kepler claimed that since Scripture is addressed to
both 'SCIENTIFIC AND IGNORANT MEN', it is bound to be worded in
accordance with human senses, as when the sun seems to move across the
sky (see Psalm I9 and Joshua l0 for example). Again, 'IF ANYONE ALLEGES
ON THE BASIS OF PSALM 24 . . . THAT THE EARTH IS FLOATING ON THE WATERS,
MAY IT NOT BE RIGHTLY SAID TO HIM THAT HE OUGHT TO SET FREE THE HOLY
SPIRIT AND SHOULD NOT DRAG HIM INTO THE SCHOOLS OF PHYSICS TO MAKE A

it serves as the inner and outer walls for things so that all the myriad
things get its protective frame.
Yang ch’i moves to take up residence at the outside of things. Like a
frame or shelter or city wall, it surrounds and protects things,
strengthening their defences so that all things feel “safe at home”
under its influence. As the Changes states, “When the house is set in
order, the world is set on a firm course.” Until yin grows stronger, the
potential for Good seems unlimited.
At the same time, the architectural metaphor suggests that yang ch’i
will soon reach its natural limits. Walls and frames are useful
constructions, but their firm structure works against open-ended
potential. Also, wide outer frames by definition are inherently weaker
than the inner core, where strength can be concentrated. As yang ch’i
moves to a position at the outer rim, it empties out from the core of
Being, leaving behind a vacuum to be filled by yin ch’i. (Compare the

Danger lies in neglecting what is fundamental (or inner) while attending
to the secondary (or outer).

It is tempting to read the graph meaning “flask” as a misprint for a
second character signifying the proper seclusion and internal order of
the women’s quarters. In that case, the Mystery reminds us that strict
segregation of the sexes is the rule within the family. This reading.
however, would violate Yang Hsiung’s rhyme scheme.
APPRAISAL 3: With young and old in proper order,
The son can sustain the father.
FATHOMING 3: Sons carrying their fathers
Means: Only then can there be renewal.
The fundamental paradox of Chinese hierarchy is that its very survival
depends upon adequate provision for mobility and change within that
hierarchy. Before his parents’ death, the filial son is subject (with
very few reservations) to the will of his parents. Upon the death of his
father, however, he succeeds to a higher position as paterfamilias.
Households and individuals survive only when they take into account both
eternal constants and changing realities.
APPRAISAL 4: A *PIG* appears in the audience hall,
With a puppy following its tracks.
FATHOMING 4: A *PIG* in the audience hall
Means: Their presence is unlucky.
In any private residence, the audience hall as the main public room
serves a variety of important functions. The ancestral tablets are
arranged on an altar in that room, making one corner of the hall a kind
of chapel dedicated to the dead. The audience hall also serves as a
living room, where family, friends, and guests gather for meals and
other ritual occasions.
The Chinese graph for “house” (chia) depicts a *PIG* under a roof; as
wealth “on the hoof,” the *PIG* should reside somewhere inside the
family compound. But the *PIG* is dirty and smelly, despite its long
domestication. Such a creature has no place in the most sacred room of
the house. Still less should the dog be there. Though
European--especially English--tradition has elevated the dog to man’s
best friend, in China the dog has remained a lowly watchdog, whose
rightful post is outside the main gate.”- Even worse, the dog is in hot
pursuit of the *PIG*. Once the dog catches up with it, there is sure to
be a tussle. According to Chinese divination texts, a fight between a
dog and a *PIG* is a bad omen signifying lack of discipline in the
household, especially in sexual matters.
APPRAISAL 5: Rudders and oars steady the ride.
They are good for riches and stability.
FATHOMING 5: Peace and harmony through rudder and oar
Means: The ride is smooth to the borders.
The boat is a miraculous conveyance since it combines the convenience
and safety of an earth-bound residence with the capacity for travel on
water. This image, then, emphasizes stability in the midst of change.
Top and bottom, rudder and oar, work in concert, just as higher and
lower ranks must cooperate to create a *JUST* *AND* *SAFE* *STATE*.
Safety in the boat depends in equal measure on the initial construction
of the boat and the skills of its captain. By analogy, the just society
requires both good institutions and a capable ruler. Once it is properly
launched and piloted, the heavy frame of the ship glides easily over the
waves, just as the ship of state “rides on” the masses. Riches and
security come to all who avail themselves of it.
APPRAISAL 6: He who sets his well and stove apart,
In three years, only sees his family's back.
FATHOMING 6: To put out well and stove
Means: In three years, no feasts are enjoyed.
To set the well and stove apart signifies the decision to split the
extended family household into separate units based on the nuclear
family--a decision often forced upon the extended family by members of
the younger generation. Each time a member of the new, smaller household
unit goes to its own separate well and stove to fetch water and cook, it
reinforces the group’s refusal to cooperate. Discord in the family
predictably ends in three related disasters: First, family elders, who
usually counsel against a split, are increasingly ignored by the
rebellious younger generation. Family elders and ancestors may even
suffer neglect (so they only “see the backs" of their insubordinate
family members). Second, the initial division of communal family
property generates even more mutual antipathy. Third, the property
division works against future cooperation between family members, no
matter how mutually advantageous such cooperation might be. A single act
of rebellion makes the entire community suffer.
APPRAISAL 7: The old man pulls a cart.33
The young girl raises a jar.
Both benefit the ancestral house.
FATHOMING 7: An old fellow pulling a cart
Means: Only then do their bodies grow strong.
The old man is apparently still vigorous enough to pull the cart by a
large rope looped around his arm. The elder’s job, as he sees it, is to
“carry the young,” both physically and emotionally, until they are old
enough to assume some responsibility for themselves. The younger members
of the family feel solicitous towards the family head, despite his
evident strength. In this way, they demonstrate their willingness to
fulfill family obligations. Conscientious in her tasks, with no mind to
dally, the young girl here hastens to raise a wine or water jar to the
old man’s lips in a gentle gesture of good will. The lesson is clear:
the major responsibility for the family is given to the male elders,
while those who are young, weak, or female repay their elders with
respect and love. Since the generations behave well toward each other,
the family line is likely to prosper; the advantages of a tight family
unit become obvious when each performs his or her role.
APPRAISAL 8: His stools upended, his ladles in pairs:35
His household is no good.
FATHOMING 8: Overturned stools, too many ladles by twice,
Mean: Family usage is not right.
In early China, the Chinese sat on mats placed on the ground, though a
stool was provided for the elderly as a mark of respect. (The *CHAIR*
was a Western import that gained popularity in Tang times.) An upended
stool signifies disrespect for the aged.
At the supper table, a single ladle was commonly reserved for the host’s
use when serving soups or stews. To double the number of large spoons
implies one of three conditions, all undesirable: unwonted luxury in the
household, a strong challenge to the prerogatives of the pater familias,
or the doubling of the women in the household (presumably because of the
age-old comparison of the spoon to the womb). Since all respect and
probity has been undermined, the family cannot continue strong.
APPRAISAL 9: If the stump produces new shoots,
Its kind is not cut off.
FATHOMING 9: A stump producing new shoots
Means: Only then does its type last long.
