Ray Hall, Taree
She would NOT be able to reach the pedals. She is tiny, under five feet tall. I know that, for I met her and chatted with her. She is also charming and gracious.

Absolutely! This is so obvious one wonders

does not understand the pedals' role in
making music! ;-)

Yes we have all seen that video!
You appear to ignore are the following facts:

-- not all pianos are the same height
-- one does not need or want the same
sound while practicing in a small
room as on the stage of a large
concert hall
-- oftentimes one plays differently
during practice than during a
concert.

Straightforward concepts that even violists

Facts are facts. It's pretty obvious Wang's attire is a way to get attention; it's has nothing to do with her technical needs.

However, I don't feel like having this same drooling discussion over her heels or miniskirts all over again, and of course the inevitable Lindner post telling us for the nth time he met YW after a concert and she could not be nicer (bless his heart!), because basically I couldn't care less about this musician. I'm not part of her audience, I don't listen to her playing. Not that she's bad, I'm just not into reiterations of the same keyboard rep.

-- not all pianos are the same height
I'm sure you meant to say "not all pedals are the same height" as the
height of the piano doesn't come into it.

Channeling my inner Al Bundy, and conceptualizing the shape of a
women's high heel shoe, that while the heel is extended off the floor,
the toe section, which is that part of the foot used for pedaling, is
not. In fact, the reach of a person's toes in terms of length does not
differ very much whether high heels or flats (unless they are the
garish high heels which also have a extension under the toes, but I
haven't seen Yuja, or anyone else, wearing those at concert.)

One might argue that the heels are used as fulcrums, and that they
change the angle of pedaling to be more downward. This is irrelevant,
as any lack of height would imply lack of reach, and having a fulcrum
position higher would require a performer to have to move her knees
forward, thus bending her legs slightly more, reducing her reach.

Also, the velocity or force of pedal itself imparts no musical input,
as it simply raises or lowers the dampers on the strings. We have also
not considered that heels are intrinsically more awkward to walk with,
and may present similar problems in pedaling.

Perhaps I have not thought this out completely and am missing some
element, but that's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

But are there any women pianists left in our audience who have actually
played in heels that could tell us whether it is easier or harder to do
so?

Thanks for your scientific heels discussion.

Obviously there are no women participants left in RMCR, partly due to these drool fests over any woman artist.

No question about that, though there are other
ways to reach the pedals for short people, e.g.
lowering the instrument or using pedal extenders.

The question however is why does she need mini
skirts to reach the pedals ?!?

Ms. Wang is smart enough to take advantage of what she has and it is a great deal. Her ability to mesmerize audiences and those listening to her CDs does not include her looks. She is a great pianist who happens to be beautiful. Our modern world demands a different code of dress for younger audiences and Yuja has worked her magic and achieved tremendous success with them. She is a winner in all ways and a magnificent artist. Mini, schmini, who cares. Her musicianship speaks for itself.

That's not only unjust but also incorrect. She's a great musician, be it in a limited repertoire. She takes on more (quantitative as well as qualitative) than she can handle. Her Hammerklavier and Kreisleriana, for example, are well-played, nothing more.

Besides, comparing a youngster with death or aged pianists is arbitrary . None of the ones you mentioned is as great a pianist as Liszt or Rachmaninoff.

Age-old topics are fine. Certainly, if there are no new ones. Not only gggg but also Andy Evans keeps RMCR alive by asking the usual questions. I do appreciate their efforts. It's not unlike Gramophone's and WQXR's lists of the best recordings of the year or the most essential ones. It keeps us busy.

I was also seriously underwhelmed (bored even) by her recent recital with the Chopin Préludes and Brahms Händel Variations. Arbitrary tempi, ritards and a tendency to play fast and faster everywhere. No sense of musical tension, drama or much beyond (certainly impressive) technical mastery.

very impressive ( and accurate)analysis of her playing... No depth to her musicality (also reflected in an often shallow piano tone as well)

My take on Yuja Wang is that she is a fantastically talented pianist with good musical instincts who is a victim of an impossibly fast paced career. This mode of living doesn’t allow enough time for reflection, or the distillation of interpretations. She has been heavily type cast as a fast fingered virtuoso, and her upcoming cd of fast encores perpetuates this narrow mold.

I remember excellent reviews she received a few years ago for a performance of Schuberts big A Major Sonata D859..

Listening yesterday to Volodos’ excellent Mompou CD (a completely un-virtuosic composer), I wish that YW would now do a 180 degree change, perhaps take a vacation, and return with something deeper. I think she could pull this off.

Stupid pretending to be smart.

She does not wear high heels when she's practising.

Ergo she doesn't need them "to reach the pedals".

She wears short skirts and high heels as a marketing tool, and succesfully, as is shown in this topic which does not even pretend to have a musical subject, just plain old men drooling over a youngish woman.

I took this as a polite way of asking what motivated you to look up a YouTube entitled “Pianists in High Heels”.
Were you looking for another premise to bash Yuja yet again? The thread title would seem to suggest it.

The part about not thinking highly of her is well known to us - I just don’t get the regular trotting her out as some sort of piñata for you and your friends to take stabs at (yet again........and again).

You're kind of like the twin of the ggg-bot, using RMCR as your personal diary / blog, posting
whatever you find "amusing" at the moment, even if (in the case of Wang) you have posted about
a million times about the subject.
Pray tell, what is my psychological profile, Dr. Lecter?

Nothing. Someone sent me a link.
And I found it rather amusing.
it's repetitive, boring and childish.
Indeed. Like so many other things
in life. For instance Vivaldi! ;-)

Let's not be silly! My personal diary
would not fit in an internet blog! ;-)

Nothing wrong with that.

No one is forcing anyone to read
anything. If you don't like my
presence here you can always
ignore my posts.

Ciao!

it's repetitive,
Not even close to Parsifal or to
Bruckner symphonies. Funnier too.

Speaking only for myself (who is a very plain old
man, but still not yet suffering from dementia),
I'm way past drooling over women young enough to
be my great-grand-daughter.
This is very reassuring to learn! ;-)

I also do not always admire her pianism.........however, last night I heard her Ravel concerto, the last movement and it was truly spectacular.

Anyone can make a mistake from time to time! ;-)
Was it the DG recording?

Strange coincidence. I just ordered ABM's Ravel/Rach4 recording on Warner Classics. Of course, I've long known these recordings, but mention of ABM in recent threads prompted me (reminded me rather).

-The question however is why does she need mini

There is little point in wearing heels and then wearing a long dress. She is not beautiful, but very cute and pretty-ish. She draws the periphery into her concerts, a more younger crowd, who are amazed at her virtuosity on a piano, and bedazzled by her bubbly presence. And if her image, entirely dictated by herself, throws off photons that impinge upon older eyeballs, however drooling they might be, she is fully harmless. And very very successful.

Pop music is all about emulation. I know that's not quite fair to her. But she
came up with a gimmick (it helps to look good) and it worked (not that she isn't
talented, and wouldn't be successful anyway) so others will emulate.
