Prince Harry And Meghan Markle Are Engaged
Harry proposed earlier this month.

By Jamie Feldman

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are engaged, Clarence House announced on
Monday.

The 33-year-old royal and the 36-year-old American actress, who have
been dating since 2016, got engaged earlier this month, Clarence House
said. The wedding is set to take place in Spring 2018. After the
nuptials, the couple plan to reside in Nottingham Cottage at Kensington
Palace.

— Clarence House (@ClarenceHouse) November 27, 2017

Harry's brother and sister-in-law the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge
were among the first to congratulate the couple on their engagement.

'We are very excited for Harry and Meghan," Prince William and the
former Kate Middleton said in a statement. "It has been wonderful
getting to know Meghan and to see how happy she and Harry are
together."

Harry's father Charles, the Prince of Wales, said he was "thrilled."
Markle's parents, Thomas Markle and Doria Ragland, said in a statement
that they were "incredibly happy" for the pair. The Queen and Duke of
Edinburgh "are delighted for the couple and wish them every happiness,"
a Buckingham Palace spokesman said. British Prime Minister Theresa May
called the news "a time of huge celebration for two people in love."

Their relationship has been closely watched by royal enthusiasts and
tabloids alike. Harry first confirmed the two were dating in November
2016 when he delivered a statement regarding alleged press and
paparazzi harassment and online abuse Markle was subjected to as a
result of the relationship.

At the time, Harry was "worried about Ms. Markle's safety and is deeply
disappointed that he has not been able to protect her," the statement
said.

After that public confirmation, the two attended weddings together and
reportedly shacked up in Canada, where Markle's television show "Suits"
is filmed, and have been able to maintain some level of privacy.

Aside from her work as an actor, Markle is known for her activism and
charitable work. She has served as an advocate for UN Women and an
international ambassador for Global Vision, a relief, development and
advocacy organization that helps provide access to clean water in over
50 countries. In March, she penned a powerful essay about the stigma
surrounding menstruation around the world.

Born and raised in California, Markle attended Northwestern University
and earned a double major in drama and international relations. She has
spoken openly about finding her confidence being biracial (her mother
is African-American and her dad is Caucasian), writing that although
her mixed heritage "may have created a grey area surrounding my
self-identification, keeping me with a foot on both sides of the fence,
I have come to embrace that. To say who I am, to share where I'm from,
to voice my pride in being a strong, confident mixed-race woman."

Markle has appeared on other television series including "Castle," and
in movies like "Horrible Bosses" and "Get Him to the Greek." She was
previously married to American producer Trevor Engelson, a union that
ended in 2013, and will be the first American to marry into the British
royal family since Wallis Simpson, a twice-divorced socialite whose
relationship with King Edward VIII prompted him to abdicate the throne.
They married in 1937.

Harry, who retired from the military in 2015 and currently lives in an
apartment in Kensington Palace, has devoted much of his time to charity
work. He founded the Invictus Games, a Paralympics-style sporting event
for wounded, injured and ill servicemen and women in 2014, works
alongside Will and Kate on mental health initiatives and works to
de-stigmatize HIV testing, too.

Can you say power couple? If you need us, we'll be right here counting
down the days until their big royal wedding.

Wow.

Can you remember back on Upstairs Downstairs how huge a scandal it was
that the son was dating an actress? I had no idea that it was now
respectable.

Online abuse? Why does anyone care what Harry does, since he and his
decendants are never going to be on the throne.

Didn't know that at all.

I wonder if anyone associated with Suits will be invited.

Well he's about what - 4th in line for the throne at this point and if
the new baby is a boy, that puts him in 'not a chance'. So younger

I understand he'll be sixth after Kate's third baby is born. That
gives them some breathing room. (I think they recently changed the
succession thing so girls are now as, uh, successible as boys.)

This would never have happened, though, if the Queen Mother were still
alive. Besides, you've got that whole "This hasn't happened since
Wallis Simpson" vibe. Mrs. Simpson is not where anyone wants to go
with this.

I wish 'em all luck.

The Queen was a young girl then, but surely she heard the gossip amongst
the family. Now with a divorce by the Prince of Wales, she goes with the
times a little more and wouldn't stand by the mores of 80 years ago.

Actually any daughter of Will and Kate would rank ahead of him as
well.

We are far past the point when British female royals are routinely
removed from the line of succession by marrying them to sundry foreign
folks.

(Probably the best known being Princess Victoria, later of Prussia who
married the German crown prince and was the mother of Kaiser Wilhelm
II)

I read somewhere today that Meghan Sparkles was raised Catholic. Not
that she was ever going to get anywhere near becoming Queen, but that's
like the fourth atypical thing about her.

Apparently, it's okay for the royal that would rule to be *married* to
a Catholic, it's just not okay for the royal that rules to BE a
Catholic. In other words, as long as Harry doesn't convert to
Catholicism and stays CofE, it doesn't matter if she's Catholic; he can
still be King, assuming everyone else ahead of him in the line of
succession dies.

Does the monarch have to religious? What if he or she says they don't

abdication or are they just dragged off and locked in the Tower of

Since the Queen is the personal embodiment of the Church of England,
yeah, the monarch has got to be religious... and not Catholic. I have
absolutely no idea what would happen if the next monarch refused the
duty of being head of the Church as an atheist.

The monarch is also the head of the Church of England. Remember, the
Church of England was formed by Henry VIII when the (Catholic) Church
wouldn't grant him a divorce when his first wife proved barren and
unable to provide an heir.

I don't think they can force the monarch to be religious or even to go
to church occasionally; in other words, he/she doesn't have to be a
*practicing* CofE member as far as I know. As I understand it, the CofE
is very liberal and even believing in god is not a hard-and-fast
requirement, even among the senior clergy.

I'm really not sure if someone from another religion could be King/Queen
though. For instance, if Charles converted to Islam, would he lose his
place in the line of succession automatically? Or if William became a
Buddhist, would he lose his spot in line?

Wikipedia to the rescue:
==========================================================================
Succession to the British throne is determined by descent, gender (for
people born before October 2011), legitimacy, and religion. Under common
law, the Crown is inherited by a sovereign's children or by a childless
sovereign's nearest collateral line. The Bill of Rights 1689 and the Act
of Settlement 1701, restrict succession to the throne to the legitimate
Protestant descendants of Sophia of Hanover that are in "communion with
the Church of England".[1] Spouses of Roman Catholics were disqualified
from 1689 until the law was amended in 2015. Protestant descendants of
those excluded for being Roman Catholics are eligible.[2]
=========================================================================

So the monarch HAS to be a Protestant descended from Sophia of Hanover.

Several of the Stuart Kings were - check out the Wiki links of King
James I/VI and follow the links though the end of the dynasty.

The last direct male line descendent of James I/VI was a Cathoilc
cardinal (obviously no legitimate heirs there) then onto the Hapsbergs

I meant to mention that women are allowed in the line of succession but
Catholics are NOT yet able to become King or Queen.
I read somewhere today that Meghan Sparkles was raised Catholic. Not
that she was ever going to get anywhere near becoming Queen, but that's
like the fourth atypical thing about her.
She can't have been confirmed as a Catholic though since in the Church
of England a confirmed Catholic who is baptized and confirmed as a
Catholic would be RECEIVED as an Anglican but not confirmed (as her
Catholic confirmation would be deemed valid).

This is what my wife did when our eldest was baptized as an Anglican
some years ago.

Prince Harry And Meghan Markle Are Engaged
Harry proposed earlier this month.

Palace.

Harry to Ms. Meghan Markle. pic.twitter.com/zdaHR4mcY6

$$$$$$ is the US's version of royalty. You can even be like Donald Trump
and claim to be one of the world's richest men when you actually aren't
by a longshot and still get a lot of people to be your obedient subjects.

Harry's father Charles, the Prince of Wales, said he was "thrilled."
How do the Canadian subjects of the House of Windsor here in r.a.tv.
feel about Charles eventually taking over as king (assuming Zombie
Elizabeth ever dies)?

I’ve seen comments suggesting Charles should abdicate to his son
William immediately after assuming the throne, because of the Diana
thing and that the British like William better.

Also; I saw the movie “King Charles III” and thought it was shit, they
presented Charles as a dumbass thrust into a ridiculous position as
the people rise up in anger because he _won’t_ support a law imposing
even worse free speech restrictions in the UK.

Well and because he doesn't really want the resposibility. I give him no
more than 5 years if he does ascend to the throne.

Plus Charles is already an old fool now, let alone by the time Queen
Elizabeth eventually dies. If Charles does become King (God help us
all!!) he won't be there very long anyway before he too dies, so
William will "soon" be King in either case.

Charles *IS* a dumbass.

If he does become King, he could decide to not use the name Charles, so
might not be "Charles III".

He seems like an alright guy to me (thou divorcing Diana was a WTF

other royals, with Harry as a wishy-washy mook, William a hen-pecked
husband and Kate a power hungry bitch.

sounds more like a true-to-life documentary, just needs to make Harry a
drunken fool as well. ;-)

the people rise up in anger because he _won't_ support a law imposing
even worse free speech restrictions in the UK.
Charles *IS* a dumbass.
He seems like an alright guy to me (thou divorcing Diana was a WTF
kinda move) but the movie is a straight-up insult to him, as well as the
other royals, with Harry as a wishy-washy mook, William a hen-pecked
husband and Kate a power hungry bitch.
It's satire.
I didn't think so. I posted a review some time back.

The characters were overdrawn like parodies of the actual people.

Harry's father Charles, the Prince of Wales, said he was "thrilled."
How do the Canadian subjects of the House of Windsor here in r.a.tv.
feel about Charles eventually taking over as king (assuming Zombie
Elizabeth ever dies)?
I've seen comments suggesting Charles should abdicate to his son
William immediately after assuming the throne, because of the Diana
thing and that the British like William better.
Well and because he doesn't really want the resposibility. I give him
no more than 5 years if he does ascend to the throne.
Plus Charles is already an old fool now, let alone by the time Queen
Elizabeth eventually dies. If Charles does become King (God help us
all!!) he won't be there very long anyway before he too dies, so William
will "soon" be King in either case.
His grandmother lived to be 101 and his mother is still going strong at
91. I wouldn't put big money on an imminent funeral for Prince (or King)
Charles.

If he does become King, he could decide to not use the name Charles, so
might not be "Charles III".

Women do tend to live longer than men, but having said that Prince

Indeed - about 3 months ago I got into BIG trouble in another
newsgroup by saying I did not expect to see the coronation of little
prince Georgie. The usual suspects said I was wishing ill on a cute
little tyke. (Which he is)

Nope - just saying that assuming Charles and Will live to the sort of
age the Queen has, barring a tragedy I would be 125-130 when little
Georgie ascends to the throne and while I would very much like to live
that long the odds are NOT in my favor! At least one of my children
might - but I'd be pleasantly shocked to get that far!

Charles is a bit of a kook, but he knows the ways of the Palace and he'd be a reasonable choice as king.

I thought Charles III was a good show and worth the time I spent
watching it.

I'm not sure why 'the Diana thing' makes the real Charles unqualified
for the throne and I suppose if the Pope can retire so can a Prince of
Wales though I remind you that when someone asked Prince Philip pretty
much the same question he looked the questioner dead in the eye and
said "You are speaking Sir about the death of the Queen!"

[which is high treason under British law though am pretty sure in 2017
no one advocates hanging drawing and quartering! In Canada the
Criminal Code of Canada DOES define 'high treason' but it's only for
the assassination, attempted assassination or kidnapping of the
monarch and the penalty is life imprisonment.

http://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/C-46/page-7.html#h-13

Actually that's not true - C-46 para 3 also defines high treason as
waging war against Canada - and the war does NOT have to be declared
to be an act of high treason which makes me wonder why this section is
not used against ex-ISIS or al Qaeda fighters since Canada was
definitely active in Afghanistan]

I think you'll find that many Canadians are indifferent or even hostile
to the monarchy. I suppose I'm somewhere between indifferent and
hostile. I don't mind them as individuals but the egalitarian in me
loathes the idea that they and their supporters think they're "better"
somehow.

Of course I need to distinguish between the institution - which has
*some* potential merit to it - and the individual monarchs and Royal
Families. I have nothing personal against the Queen and think she's done
her job decently.

I've seen that idea put forwar.d many times. I have no reason to believe
that he will actually do it. It would be his choice, subject to pressure
from the British parliament. Given his age, it doesn't seem likely his
will be a lengthy monarchy anyway. Then again, given the age his mother
and grandmother reached, he could ascend to the throne at 70 and still
live another 30 years! (Back in the day, a king would ascend to the
throne at that age and die in just a few years.)

Charles *does* have some eccentric views on things that may alienate
some people and he is still seen as something of a villain over the way
his first marriage went but the Brits don't really choose a King, they
settle for the one they get given the laws of succession. They have no
formal veto, although if there was some kind of mass revolt against him,
Parliament might try to pressure him to abdicate.

I've had my free speech trampled on quite enough, thank you very much!
Our current Prime Minister's party has made it a crime punishable by up
to two years in PRISON if I don't use the correct pronoun for some
gender-confused individual. I am *really* hoping they try to prosecute
someone on that and then see it struck down by the courts. Then again,
our courts are liberal enough that they might AFFIRM that law, which
would be VERY chilling.

Of course, who happens to be King or Queen has no bearing on that at all.

I expect it was a plot device, pure and simple. I truly hope no one
thinks it's a great idea to limit free speech any further than it
already is. Of course, I know the SJWs are absolutely FRANTIC to limit
free speech; I just hope our leaders are IGNORING them. (Once again, I

Also; I saw the movie âÂ?Â|King Charles IIIâÂ?? and thought it was
shit, they
presented Charles as a dumbass thrust into a ridiculous position as
the people rise up in anger because he _wont_ support a law
imposing
even worse free speech restrictions in the UK.
Of course, who happens to be King or Queen has no bearing on that at all.
The premiss of the flick is that Parliament passes a law greatly restricting
freedom of the press and;

in a bad position and didn’t care about how stupid it looked, or if they actually
believe the legislation is a good idea, but the story didn’t work for me
Well fair enough - the last time a monarch denied royal ascent was
Queen Anne (early 18th century) who believed a bill on Scottish
militias actually would have the effect of promoting Scottish
separatism which was more sensible than it sounds as the English and
Scottish crowns (thus "United Kingdom") had been united for less than
a decade at the time.

[No I'm not a constitutional historian - I was in London in 2016 doing
a tour of the Houses of Parliament and that's what the tour guide
said! If I recall correctly it was said right in the middle of the
House of Lords]]

I've had my free speech trampled on quite enough, thank you very much!
Our current Prime Minister's party has made it a crime punishable by up
to two years in PRISON if I don't use the correct pronoun for some
gender-confused individual. I am *really* hoping they try to prosecute
someone on that and then see it struck down by the courts. Then again,
our courts are liberal enough that they might AFFIRM that law, which
would be VERY chilling.
Have you been following the saga of Lindsay Shepherd, a TA at Wilfrid
Laurier University in Ontario, who played a YouTube video for her class
about gender pronouns and was subsequently interrogated by the
university's Gender Police in a scene like something out of a Stalinist
star chamber:

Of course the US is no better. Looks at what normal kids who showed up
to take their mid-term exams at Berkeley had to deal with.

Yes, I'm quite aware of that story. It irks me greatly. I actually took
some classes at that school in the 70s; it's just down the road from the
university I attended. Of course it hadn't been so thoroughly
infiltrated by SJW profs in those days.

College/university campuses are becoming ridiculous in both our
countries. The Marxists seem to have fully infiltrated the faculties in
many schools and have brainwashed countless young people into buying
their nonsense. I fear for our society as these people leave the
universities and enter government, both in the civil service and in
elected politics.

These people are completely disconnected from reality and seek to foist
their delusions on everyone. I hope that many can yet be saved by simple
contact with reality; in fact, that's the only hope we have because
they're not being told the truth by anyone else.

You mean like King Edward VII who ascended the throne in his late 60s
after a life of boozing, smoking and whoring?

Chuckie at least doesn't do a whole lot of those things...
