With Mr. Hislop now no doubt.

Our 12 year old Golden Retriever that is.
Shat all over the hall when we got up this morning which is not like him at
all, we had noticed that he's not as active this last month or so, and i
noticed he looked decidedly thin (but no loss of appetite) this last week.

So, after dropping kids at school and returning home, I then noticed he
suddenly couldnt move his back legs without a *lot* of effort, which got
progressively worse as the afternoon wore on.

So, there you go, not long back from 't vitenery after having him put down.
Suprisingly quick........and emotional :-(

Im just glad we did it before he got to a point where he was suffering.
Cunt still cost me £75 though.

Some people rip the piss and say it's only an animal. I've felt closer
to my animals and felt worse when they went than some of my human
relatives. It doesn't make it any easier because they weren't human. I
used to tell my dog things I never told anyone else and was gutted when
they snuffed it.

Shat all over the hall when we got up this morning which is not like him at
all, we had noticed that he's not as active this last month or so, and i
noticed he looked decidedly thin (but no loss of appetite) this last week.
Bummer, you have my sympathies- similar thing happened Ben, to one of our Old
English - he had already survived a cancerous growth in his jaw at 7 years,
but had similar symptoms to your dog at around 12 years.

Yup - a few tears were shed for Ben as we held his head as he was put to
sleep. Then a year later his mate Emma started loosing weight, no obvious
illness symptoms, but every time she ate she puked. We put her in to the vets
for a check up, and they phoned to say they had found a massive tumour - she
was still under general, and they recommended we allow them to put her to
sleep before she came out - so we didn't even get the chance to say goodbye.

obvious illness symptoms, but every time she ate she puked. We put

And for us emotional peeps that appreciate our pets, that makes it all
the more difficult.

Not long after I started work (mid 80's) our Daxie started to lose
weight and wasn't at all well. It turned out to be a trapped nerve
that worked the stomach. Due to the (particular) nerve being trapped
although he was eating he wasn't able to digest the food, so he
basically starved to death.

Whilst my parents were away I was taking him to the vets regularly,
given the fact that he had difficulty walking and couldn't keep his
food down. Being 17 I was fleeced better than an old sheep the welsh
want to pretend is lamb. For sure.

The vets 'tested' him for various things that might be wrong, such as
poisoning, but to no avail.

When my parents came back off their hols, the first morning back at
work my dog lay under the table and I could see the lack of life in his
eyes. When my parents took him to the vets they were told 'you do know
he is dying, don't you. Would you like to go home and think about it?'

Think about it? I'd spent a small fortune on a dog with a supposed
illness that turned out to be a back problem, that the then vet was
unable to diagnose and had subsequently squeezed a large amount of
money from us *because they knew know better* and at that point in time
was beyond saving. The bloody vet had allowed the dog to starve to
death.

Anyway, we lost a dog last year (after 19 years), not all vets are bad.
In actual fact, that Daxie shouldn't have lasted over 7 except the vet
we went to recognised the problem that he had with his back.

Yup - a few tears were shed for Ben as we held his head as he was put
to sleep. Then a year later his mate Emma started loosing weight, no
obvious illness symptoms, but every time she ate she puked. We put
her in to the vets for a check up, and they phoned to say they had
found a massive tumour - she was still under general, and they
recommended we allow them to put her to sleep before she came out -
so we didn't even get the chance to say goodbye.
And for us emotional peeps that appreciate our pets, that makes it all
the more difficult.
You are not wrong there - what was worse was that Emma was as bright as
a button, no other symptoms other than puking every time she ate or drank
anything. When we left her - my last memory of seeing her - she was sat
up on the vets table with that curious "where are you going, don't leave
me here, I don't know these people!" look on her face...... sob!

Our 12 year old Golden Retriever that is.
Shat all over the hall when we got up this morning which is not like
him at all, we had noticed that he's not as active this last month or
so, and i noticed he looked decidedly thin (but no loss of appetite)
this last week.
So, after dropping kids at school and returning home, I then noticed
he suddenly couldnt move his back legs without a lot of effort, which
got progressively worse as the afternoon wore on.
So, there you go, not long back from 't vitenery after having him put
down. Suprisingly quick........and emotional :-(
Im just glad we did it before he got to a point where he was
suffering. Cunt still cost me #75 though.
Eeh, sad to hear it. [1]

My sisters dog suffered a heart attack over the w/e and she (the dog,
not sis) is currently on medication to try and control it.

Apparently she died for 90 seconds, but I put that down to the BIL
being excited and making more out of the situation than was necessary.

[1] I had to have one of my dogs put to sleep last year, 19 years of
age.

Miniature long-haired Dachshund - average age for that breed of 8 years
so we didn't do too badly.

Well..given that people like to average things out for all breeds it's
obvious that there will be variances. We've currently got a mini wire
daxie who is 12, ergo she is doing better than the average.

But our first daxie (another mini long) only lasted until the age of 5
due to back problems (and an incorrect diagnosis from the vet we used
at the time).

And if you take into account the advances in animal treatment over the
years then there will be a longer life-span for pets than used to be
the norm - our mini wire had 3 exploded discs at the age of 6 and
wasn't expected to walk again.

It's a hard thing to do innit?

I had to get my 11year and 10 month old westie put down last year. One of
the most heart breaking things I 've ever had to do. I've had dogs before
and had to have them put down before but my westie - Kikstart was his name -
was a dog like no other. Absolutely brilliant and a top pal. Took what
appeared to be a stroke one day then was as right as rain apart from a
drooping eye. Then had what seemed to be another stroke and started taking
epileptic fits. Vet reckoned it was a tumour on the brain. It's a tough,
tough thing to do, but right.
Post by Donegal Paul
It's going to be a while before we get another dog, for certain.
I didn't want to get one for a while but the wife ended up wanting a pup
about a month later. Said the cat needed a friend and she was probably
right. I have never seen an animal go into mourning so much for so long.
The cat missed that dog terribly. He didn't care much for the pup at first
'cause it wasn't Kikstart, but he's pals with him now.

The decision was easy, it was the feeling of his head getting heavy in my
hands as he died that was the worst bit for me.

Absolutely. I know if i'd given him another day, we would have likely either
woken up to a dead dog or at least in a lot of pain.

Yeah. He'd been ill for a few weeks, and had spent most of the
previous week at the vets receiving a 'perfusion' to flush nasties out
of his system that his kidney's were failing to do. Got him home on
the monday and he brightened up by Wednesday, then went rapidly
downhill until Sat morning, when we took him to the vet's again.

Oh, for those that have met them, it was Pippo, the youngest and

Well, always assuming I might have thought that, the 300 Eu bill for
treating him and for the special food he needed, plus the 60Eu it cost
to have him put down, would take some time to balance out.
