Jury braces itself for a horror tale of missing women and a pig farm
Catherine Philp in Vancouver

For 20 years, women went missing from seedy streets. Now a court will
hear evidence that they may have ended up in pies

Marnie Frey called her parents for the last time on her 24th birthday.
Lynn, her stepmother, answered the phone to hear Marnie giggling,
wheedling for some birthday cash. Mrs Frey was reluctant, knowing that
it would be spent to feed her heroin habit.
She told her daughter that a parcel was on its way, with clothes, food
and toiletries, things low down on her daughter’s shopping list for
life on the mean streets of the Downtown Eastside, Vancouver. The
thank-you call never came.

Rick and Lynn Frey would not learn what had become of their daughter
until after a frantic search that lasted five years. Her remains were
unearthed on a pig farm in Port Coquitlam, on the outskirts of
Vancouver. The farm belonged to Robert Pickton, known as “Uncle
Willie,” a pig farmer well-known for the parties that he threw for
prostitutes and bikers at his quasi- legal drinking club, the Piggy
Palace.

Investigators dug up the remains of one woman after another, from body
parts to minute traces of DNA, until the count came to 30. Four could
not be identified. The other 26 were among the names of 67 women who
had disappeared from the Downtown Eastside streets. On Monday Mr
Pickton goes on trial for six murders, the only cases in which body
parts survive.

Few of the details of the evidence have been made public in Canada,
where strict publication bans have muffled preliminary hearings. But
what has come to light is grim enough: butchered body parts discovered
in a freezer; a woodchipper, confiscated by police, where the women’s
bodies were believed to have been disposed of; and the public health
warning that the pigs believed to have been fed on human remains were
then slaughtered and put into the human food chain — along with,
perhaps, human meat itself.

At jury selection, the judge warned potential jurors that what they
would hear would be “like a horror movie”. But this time, he told
them, they would not be able to switch it off.

But the friends and families of the murdered and missing women are
those who are likely to suffer the most trauma. Evidence is expected
to take as long as a year to hear. Yet most plan to be there, to find
out what happened to their daughters, sisters and friends, and how it
was allowed to happen. The women of the Downtown Eastside disappeared
gradually, over the course of 20 years, unseen and apparently uncared
for by those meant to protect them.

The Downtown Eastside is the poorest postcode in Canada, where life
expectancy is less than 40. Its seedy bars and dank doorways shelter
the huddled forms of vagrants and junkies, creating a filthy
foreground to the gleaming skyscrapers less than a mile up the road.
It has the highest rate of HIV infection in North America and is the
only place in the developed world where infected women outnumber men.
Social workers called the prostitutes here “survival sex workers”.
They are selling themselves merely to stay alive.

Rebecca Guno was the first to disappear, in 1983, but no one knew then
that she was only the first. Fourteen years later, when Ms Frey’s call
never came, Mrs Frey grew worried. When Ms Frey had still not surfaced
after four months and local police said that they could not help, Mrs
Frey and her sister, Joyce LaChance, travelled to the Downtown
Eastside to report Ms Frey missing there. “The police there, they
didn’t seem concerned. They said she was an adult and she’d probably
taken off somewhere,” Mrs Frey recalls. “They made us think we were
the only ones looking for someone missing.”

Infuriated by the police refusal to look for her daughter, Mrs Frey
and her sister began their own search. They began to meet other
people, like them, looking for their missing loved ones. One woman,
searching for her sister, had been refused a missing person report and
told to “go put her picture up at the needle exchange”. A man, Wayne
Leng, was searching for his friend Sarah de Vries, last seen on a
street corner on April 14, 1998, seven months after Marnie’s last
call.

Ms de Vries’s theory of what lay behind the disappearances was
contained in a journal she left at Mr Leng’s. “Am I next? Is he
watching me now?” she wrote. “Stalking me like a predator and its
prey? Waiting, waiting for some perfect spot, time or my stupid
mistake?” The more Mrs Frey spoke to the street girls, the more she
became convinced that Ms de Vries’s theory of a serial killer was
right. “The girls told me, ‘There’s this guy who picks up girls in
vans and takes them to a farm and they don’t come back. He’s got a
woodchipper’,” she said. “Then they’d run away scared and wouldn’t say
any more.”

Mrs LaChance suddenly thought of the farm near her home where the
Pickton brothers lived. She knew a friend of theirs and had babysat
for her children. The sisters relayed their suspicions to the police,
who were adamant that there was no serial killer.

Family members lobbied the press and The Vancouver Sun began its own
investigation. Mr Leng set up a hotline for tips about the killings
and received a call from one Bill Hiscox, a former employee on the
farm. He knew a woman who had been inside the trailer where Mr Pickton
lived, behind the main farmhouse where his brother, Dave, lived. “She
doesn’t want to get involved. She’s kind of scared about it,” he said
in the call that Mr Leng taped. “But she told me, ‘Billy, you wouldn’t
believe the IDs and s*** in that trailer. There’s women’s clothes out
there, there’s purses. You know, what’s that guy doing? It’s, like,
really weird’.”

Mr Hiscox also noted a case known to the police, when Wendy Lynn
Eistetter, a prostitute, had fled the pig farm, handcuffed, bleeding
from the stomach, claiming that Robert Pickton had stabbed her. Mr
Pickton, who was also wounded in the incident, was charged with
attempted murder but Ms Eistetter balked at testifying and the charges
were dropped. Mr Leng handed the tape to police but heard no more
about it.

The name Pickton would not come up again until 2002, four years later,
when police visited the farm with an unrelated warrant to search for
an unlicensed gun. They stumbled upon an asthma inhaler prescribed in
the name of one of the missing women and the ID cards of several
others. They returned with another warrant and began searching the
property, beginning with the slaughterhouse.

In the freezers, they unearthed two five-gallon tubs. Inside were
severed hands and feet, and the heads of two women among the most
recently reported missing. Both were sawn in half like the carcasses
of the slaughtered pigs. One, Serena Abbotsway, had gone missing only
a few months after leading a protest march against police inaction
over the killings. Much of the evidence may have been devoured long
before police set foot on the farm. “It is believed that there is a
possibility that human remains were fed to pigs but the risk of
disease to those who may have had contact with the meat was
negligible,” a 2003 police health study said. “The psychological
effects may be worse than the physical.”

Five years and 26 murder charges later, the cases of 39 missing women
remain open. Investigators continue to sift through the samples taken
from the Pickton farm in search of any trace of those still missing.
An internal police inquiry has been ordered but the families are still
clamouring for a public one. “If this was a rich community in the West
End, all hell would have broken loose,” Rick Frey said. Down on the
seedy streets of the Downtown Eastside, a serial killer might no
longer be stalking the women but the violence continues unabated. In
2005 Donald Bakker was convicted of the torture and sexual assault of
nearly 60 prostitutes, whose ordeals he had taped. None reported the
abuse to the police. More than 20 men have been convicted of killing
one prostitute each in the Downtown Eastside since 1980.

“What’s more scary, one person killing all these women, or all these
men killing just one each?” Kate Gibson, the executive director of the
WISH drop-in centre asked.

At the junction of Main and Hastings, known in the Downtown Eastside
as Pain and Wastings, I stop to speak to a familiar-looking young
working girl. She is Natasha, the sister of Ms de Vries, whose
adoption by a middle-class family did not save her from ending up
here. Natasha had never met Ms de Vries but came here in search of her
after fleeing an abusive boyfriend in Ontario.

But her sister had disappeared only a month before. Now Natasha leads
the life that her sister left behind. “We don’t talk about that stuff
that happened,” she slurs. “You just gotta keep going.”

Celebrity Big Brother: Vote to Keep PETA’s Friend Shilpa Shetty in the
House!
Bollywood megastar and Celebrity Big Brother housemate Shilpa Shetty
showed how much she hates cruelty to animals by posing as a tiger –
stripped down to her stripes and crouched in a small cage – for a
stunning PETA India ad to illustrate the misery of animals used in
circuses. With the strapline “Beaten, Lonely and Abused – Boycott the
Circus”, the ad encourages the actor’s legions of fans around the
world to boycott circuses with animal acts.

Why is Shilpa so upset by animal acts? Animal circuses portray a
distorted view of wildlife and of domestic animals like horses and
dogs. In contrast to the glittery image the circus tries to project,
the lives of animals who are forced to perform repetitious, confusing
and often painful tricks are miserable. Animals do not naturally stand
on their heads or jump through rings of fire, so circus handlers use
whips, electric shock prods and other tools of torture to train them.
Circus animals work based on fear, knowing they will be hurt badly if
they do not obey. A diverse range of animals is used in circuses in
the UK – from tigers and camels to ducks and parrots. Some circuses in
Europe even use animals like hippos and rhinos.

“By no means was I comfortable during the photo shoot crouched in that
small cage”, explained Shilpa. “But what were a few fleeting moments
of discomfort for me compared to what life must be like for the
precious animals held captive in the circus? These once dignified
animals only leave their cages, which are barely larger than the size
of their bodies, for a few minutes each day to be forced into the ring
to perform tricks which make no sense and are upsetting to them. The
best way to help animals suffering in circuses is to boycott the
circus.”

From Bollywood to Hollywood, other celebrities who have helped PETA
spotlight cruelty to animals used in entertainment include Alec
Baldwin, Goldie Hawn, and Kim Basinger for PETA US and Isha Koppikar,
Amisha Patel, Rahul Khanna, and Rahul Dev for PETA India.

Fun is a source of enjoyment, amusement, or pleasure for all parties
concerned. Unless, apparently, if you're a fish!

http://www.fishinghurts.com/feat-hiddenfish.asp

Dr. Sylvia Earle, one of the world's leading marine biologists, said,
"I never eat anyone I know personally. I wouldn't deliberately eat a
grouper any more than I'd eat a cocker spaniel. They're so
good-natured, so curious. You know, fish are sensitive, they have
personalities, they hurt when they're wounded." A recent issue of Fish
and Fisheries, devoted to learning, cited more than 500 research
papers on fish intelligence, proving that fish are smart, that they
can use tools, and that they have impressive long-term memories and
sophisticated social structures.
Many people have never stopped to think about it, but fish are smart,
interesting animals with their own unique personalities—just like the
dogs and cats we share our homes with. Did you know that fish can
learn to avoid nets by watching other fish in their group and that
they can recognize individual "shoal mates"? Some fish gather
information by eavesdropping on others, and some—such as the South
African fish who lay eggs on leaves so that they can carry them to a
safe place—even use tools.

Scientists are starting to learn more and more about our finned
friends, and their discoveries are fascinating:

• A recent issue of Fish and Fisheries, devoted to learning, cited
more than 500 research papers on fish intelligence, proving that fish
are smart, that they can use tools, and that they have impressive
long-term memories and sophisticated social structures. The
introductory chapter said that fish are "steeped in social
intelligence, pursuing Machiavellian strategies of manipulation,
punishment and reconciliation … exhibiting stable cultural traditions
and cooperating to inspect predators and catch food."

• Culum Brown, a University of Edinburgh biologist who is studying the
evolution of cognition in fish, says, "Fish are more intelligent than
they appear. In many areas, such as memory, their cognitive powers
match or exceed those of 'higher' vertebrates, including non-human
primates." Their long-term memories help fish keep track of complex
social relationships. Their spatial memory—"equal in all respects to
any other vertebrate"—allows them to create cognitive maps that guide
them through their watery homes, using cues such as polarized light,
sounds, smells, and visual landmarks.

• Dr. Phil Gee, a psychologist from the University of Plymouth, says
that fish can tell what time of day it is, and he trained fish to
collect food by pressing a lever at specific times. He says "fish have
a memory span of at least three months," and they "are probably able
to adapt to changes in their circumstances, like any other small
animals and birds."

• "We're now finding that [fish] are very capable of learning and
remembering, and possess a range of cognitive skills that would
surprise many people."
—Dr. Theresa Burt de Perera, Oxford University

• A scientific review presented to the Australian Veterinary
Association completely disproved the old myth that goldfish have
three-second memories; instead, the veterinarians found that goldfish
have impressive memories and problem-solving abilities. One of the
researchers said that after conducting the review, they wanted “to get
the message out to vets to start looking more closely at fish and
considering their welfare like they do other animals.”
—The Sunday Times, May 28, 2006

• "Australian crimson spotted rainbowfish, which learnt to escape from
a net in their tank, remembered how they did it 11 months later. This
is equivalent to a human recalling a lesson learnt 40 years ago."
—Sunday Telegraph, Oct. 3, 2004

DID YOU KNOW?
• Fish talk to each other with squeaks, squeals, and other
low-frequency sounds that humans can hear only with special
instruments.

• Fish like to be touched and often gently rub against one
another—like a cat weaving in and out of your legs.

• Some fish tend well-kept gardens, encouraging the growth of tasty
algae and weeding out the types they don't like.

• Like birds, many fish build nests where they raise their babies;
others collect little rocks off the seafloor to make hiding places
where they can rest.

• Some fish woo potential partners by singing to them, but male sand
gobies, tiny fish who live along the European coast, play "Mr. Mom,"
building and guarding nests and fanning the eggs with their fins to
create a current of fresh, oxygenated water.

Being Hooked Hurts!
A two-year study conducted by scientists at Edinburgh University and
the Roslin Institute in the United Kingdom proved what many marine
biologists have been saying for years: Fish feel pain, just as all
animals do. Anglers may not like to think about it, but fish suffer
when they are impaled in the mouth and pulled into an environment in
which they cannot breathe. Said Dr. Lynne Sneddon, who headed the
recent study, "Really, it's kind of a moral question. Is your angling
more important than the pain to the fish?" If you fish or know someone
who does, click here to learn more.

Some Fish Are Too Clever to Catch!
“According to the researchers, close encounters with nets in early
life can educate the fish to swim away from an approaching trawler. .
. . Emma Jones, a fish behaviorist at the Marine Laboratory, said:
‘And if you have one fish that is a particularly fast learner, the
others will follow.’”
—The Times (London), October 28, 2004

Fish Faux Fish or No Fish
Fish suffer horribly on the journey from sea to supermarket.
Commercial fishing boats use huge nets, some stretching for miles,
which swallow up everything—and everyone—in their paths. Fish come out
of the nets with their skin scraped completely raw from being forced
to rub up against rocks, debris—and other fish—trapped with them.

Fish flesh is frequently contaminated with mercury (which can cause
brain damage) and toxic chemicals like DDT, PCBs, and dioxin (which
have been linked to cancer, nervous system disorders, and fetal
damage), as well as disease—causing bacteria. Why not try faux fish
instead? Vegetarian products like Worthington's Tuno (available in
health food stores) and mock lobster, shrimp, and crab (available
online) have all the taste of the "real thing"—but none of the cruelty
or contaminants.

Fish Feel Pain
While it may seem obvious that fish are able to feel pain, like every
other animal, some people still think of fish as swimming vegetables.
In fact, regarding the ability to feel pain, fish are equal to dogs,
cats, and all other animals. Dr. Donald Broom, scientific advisor to
the British government, explains, “The scientific literature is quite
clear. Anatomically, physiologically and biologically, the pain system
in fish is virtually the same as in birds and animals."”

Indeed, neurobiologists have long recognized that fish have nervous
systems that comprehend and respond to pain, and anyone who made it
through Biology 101 knows that fish have nerves and brains that sense
pain, just like all animals. Indeed, scientists tell us that fish
brains and nervous systems closely resemble our own. For example, fish
(like “higher vertebrates”) have neurotransmitters like endorphins
that relieve suffering—of course, the only reason for their nervous
systems to produce pain killers is to relieve pain. Claiming that fish
do not suffer is as intellectually and scientifically sound as arguing
that the Earth is flat.

Interestingly, scientists have created a detailed map of pain
receptors in fish's mouths and all over their bodies. A team of
researchers at the University of Guelph in Canada recently surveyed
the scientific literature on fish pain and intelligence. They
concluded that fish feel pain and that “the welfare of fish requires
consideration.” Dr. Lynne Sneddon, a scientist of fish biology in the
United Kingdom, explains, “Really, it's kind of a moral question. Is
your angling more important than the pain to the fish?”

Scientists at Edinburgh University and the Roslin Institute in the
United Kingdom report that in response to pain, fish also feel
emotional stress and engage in “a ‘rocking’ motion strikingly similar
to the kind of motion seen in stressed higher vertebrates like
mammals.” The research team concluded that fish clearly experience
pain in the same way as mammals, both physically and psychologically.
A study by scientists at the Queen's University of Belfast proved that
fish learn to avoid pain, just like other animals. Rebecca Dunlop, one
of the researchers, said: “This paper shows that pain avoidance in
fish doesn't seem to be a reflex response, rather one that is learned,
remembered and is changed according to different circumstances.
Therefore, if fish can perceive pain, then angling cannot continue to
be considered a non-cruel sport.”

As you would expect from animals who we now know to be intelligent and
interesting individuals with memories and the capacity to learn, fish
can also suffer from fear and anticipation of physical pain.
Researchers from universities across America have published research
showing that some fish use sound to communicate distress when nets are
dipped into their tanks or they are otherwise threatened. In a
separate study, researcher William Tavolga found that fish grunted
when they received an electric shock. In addition, the fish began to
grunt as soon as they saw the electrode, clearly in anticipation of
the torment that Tavolga was inflicting on them.

According to Dr. Michael Fox, D.V.M, Ph.D., "Even though fish don't
scream [audibly to humans] when they are in pain and anguish, their
behavior should be evidence enough of their suffering when they are
hooked or netted. They struggle, endeavoring to escape and, by so
doing, demonstrate they have a will to survive."

What happens to fish before they end up on your plate is nothing short
of cruelty to animals—whether they’re farmed or pulled from the ocean,
fish are treated in ways that would warrant felony charges if it were
other animals who were so horribly abused. Please click here to learn
what you can do to help stop this.

KFC Investigation Unearths Shocking Abuse video

Journalist Martin Coutts gives the details of a lengthy undercover
investigation conducted into a Premier Foods chicken farm, one of the
UK’s largest chicken producers and known KFC supplier. The
investigators, working in conjunction with an undercover team from
Hillside Animal Sanctuary, shot extensive video footage of the
conditions on this factory farm. Here are some descriptions of the
cruelty they uncovered:
KFC Investigation Unearths Shocking Abuse

"There are more than 36,000 chickens here in huge windowless sheds.
The conditions they have to endure during their short, brutal lives
are so horrific it defies belief."

"Some birds are so lame and deformed they can only drag themselves to
the food and water troughs by their wings. Others stand motionless,
too dazed or dying to move."
“In one shed where chickens had been taken away for slaughter there
were dozens of carcasses littering the floor. In another - where
scores of birds had died - their remains were being picked over by
other chickens.”
“One investigator who shot a secret film there said: ‘I have
investigated animal welfare for many years, but this easily ranks
amongst some of the worst cruelty I have seen.’” KFC claims to have
animal welfare standards in place which cover “all chicken[s] intended
to be sold at KFC,” but such words are meaningless when they allow
hideous abuses to take place. And Premier Foods won the “KFC Supplier
of the Year Award” in January of 2001. If this level of abuse
represents the best of what KFC suppliers have to offer, imagine what
other farms allow!
PETA is calling on KFC to immediately adopt PETA’s recommended animal
welfare guidelines internationally. PETA’s guidelines have been
approved by members of KFC’s own animal welfare advisory panel and
represent the most up-to-date studies and research into animal
welfare. Click here to read more about PETA’s recommendations to KFC.

SHAME OF CHICKEN FACTORY FARM
Desperate birds peck at carcasses as thousands struggle to survive
By Martin Coutts
SOME birds are so lame and deformed they can only drag themselves to
the food and water troughs by their wings. Others stand motionless,
too dazed or dying to move.

There are more than 36,000 chickens here in huge windowless sheds. The
conditions they have to endure during their short, brutal lives are so
horrific it defies belief.

Today the Sunday Mirror reveals the sickening reality of one factory
farm which lies hidden beneath the cheerful image of the KFC fast-food
chain, with its slogans "Finger Lickin' Good" and "Nobody Does Chicken
Like KFC".

Undercover investigators went behind the scenes at Wrawby Farm, near
Scunthorpe, North Lincs. Its owners, P D Hook (Broilers) Ltd, are
contracted by Premier Fresh Foods, part of the huge 2 Sisters Food
Group, to supply chickens that end up at KFC outlets and stores such
as Tesco and Kwik Save.

KFC were so impressed by 2 Sisters' service that they made them their
Supplier Of The Year in 2001. And 2 Sisters, who have an annual
turnover of £50million, even boast of receiving RSPCA awards for their
"outstanding contribution to animal welfare".

But our investigation at Wrawby Farm painted a different picture - one
of cruelty and neglect.

In one shed where chickens had been taken away for slaughter there
were dozens of carcasses littering the floor. In another - where
scores of birds had died - their remains were being picked over by
other chickens.

The findings will shock KFC, who have 500 outlets in Britain and
employ 8,000 people. Originally called Kentucky Fried Chicken, they
are the world's largest chicken fast-food chain with a worldwide
turnover last year of £4billion. Almost 800million birds were
slaughtered to produce more than two billion chicken meals for the
group last year.

We launched our probe with experts from animal welfare group the
Hillside Animal Sanctuary after a tip-off about conditions at Wrawby
Farm.

One investigator who shot a secret film there said: "I have
investigated animal welfare for many years, but this easily ranks
amongst some of the worst cruelty I have seen.

"When I went into the sheds I could hardly believe how crammed-in the
birds were. It was difficult to move among them and the heat was
unbearable. There were lots of dead and dying birds and many were
terribly deformed.

"The conditions these birds were living in was inhumane - and if the
public saw how they are reared before ending up on their table then
they would be appalled."

Our findings come just weeks after animal rights group People For the
Ethical Treatment Of Animals (PETA) announced they would be suing KFC
in the USA.

PETA claims the company's advertising hides "grotesque abuses
inflicted upon chickens by suppliers".

PETA's Director of European Campaigns Sean Gifford said: "KFC has said
from the outset that they will not allow the animals to feel any
pain... in fact every moment of these animals' lives is characterised
by unmitigated misery.

"People need to understand that if they are eating chicken, they're
supporting cruelty to animals and if they're eating at KFC, they're
supporting a company that has done nothing to prevent the worst abuses
of chickens on the farm, during transport and at slaughter."

In the US, PETA researchers found birds destined for KFC meals grew to
full weight - 4lb 8oz - in only 41 days instead of the natural five or
six months.

As a result, their heart and lungs came under such pressure that many
died from organ failure.

These chickens are raised in huge sheds where there is initially
plenty of room, but as they grow, conditions become crowded.

PETA has also demanded that chickens should be killed by gassing
rather than electric stunning.

Last night Hillside Animal Sanctuary echoed PETA's concerns and called
on the Government to take urgent action. A spokesman said: "The scenes
of appalling neglect we witnessed in these sheds were abhorrently
cruel.

"As a supplier to such major supermarkets and food retailers you would
expect these farms to be setting the highest welfare standards - but
this farm is like something from the Dark Ages.

"We would ask the relevant Government department to take immediate
action to put an end to this cruelty. Factory farming is simply about
producing the largest amount of animals in the shortest amount of time
with animal welfare unimportant."

An RSPCA spokesman said: "We are extremely concerned at allegations of
cruelty at this site. The RSPCA has for a long time campaigned for
improvements to chicken farming and we would like to see this footage
as a matter of urgency so we can assess it and, if necessary,
investigate these allegations."

Questioned about Wrawby Farm, a KFC spokesperson said: "Although we
only represent a very small part of 2 Sisters Food Group production,
we take all welfare matters very seriously and would take any evidence
of maltreatment as a breach of our contract."

A spokesman for 2 Sisters said: "We take animal welfare extremely
seriously and if there is any evidence that the required standards
have not been met then we will take immediate remedial action."

A Tesco spokesman said: "We expect the highest standards from our
suppliers and audit them regularly. We take allegations of this kind
seriously and have already started to investigate them." And a
spokesman for Kwik Save said: "Our fresh meat departments are run by
independent retail concessionaires.

"One such concessionaire has been using this farm to supply a very
small amount of his weekly poultry requirement. He has now decided not
to use the supplier in the future."

When confronted by the Sunday Mirror, a director of farm owners PD
Hook, Mark Wannell, 37, of Bampton, Oxfordshire, said: "The company
has no comment."

THE LIFE OF A CHICKEN

BROILER chickens are hatched in giant incubators at hatcheries across
Britain.

At a day old the chicks are stuffed into crates and taken to
windowless rearing sheds.

Each chicken may have little more space than the size of an A4 sheet
of paper.

For the first two weeks the chicks are kept warm using industrial heat
lamps.

At three weeks they are half the size of an adult bird - growth that
should take twice as long.

At 42 days old the birds are taken to a slaughterhouse.

They are hung upside down, then stunned with an electric shock and
their throats cut.

Some are then put in boiling water to help remove feathers - and then
the carcass is sent to restaurants.

MACCA: STOP THE SUFFERING

BEATLES legend and veteran animal rights campaigner Sir Paul McCartney
has called on KFC for an urgent shake-up of its farming practices.

"If KFC suppliers treated dogs or cats the way they treat chickens,
they could be charged with the crime of cruelty to animals," he said.

"I would like to see KFC stop allowing chickens to be drugged, end the
starvation of birds, stop burning the beaks off parent birds and make
sure slaughter methods do not permit animals to be scalded to death.

"I am a vegetarian because I realise that even little chickens suffer
pain and fear. These remarkable animals are deserving of at least a
little kindness."

Early Day Motion 158
http://www.league.org.uk/content.asp?CategoryID=1902
The League's campaign for the prohibition on snares was hugely
successful in the last Parliamentary session. A total of 231 local MPs
signed EDM 75, a Parliamentary motion calling for a ban on the sale,
manufacture and use of all snares.

EDMs only last one Parliamentary year and the signatures from last
year's EDM have now been deleted. Our campaign therefore needs to be
renewed in order to maintain pressure on the Government and keep
snaring at the forefront of debate in Parliament.

A new Early Day Motion on snares has been tabled for the current
parliamentary session. EDM 158 will help the League in its campaign to
see legislation prohibiting snares. We need your help to urge your MP
http://www.advocacyonline.net/eactivist/user/userB.jsp?***@fI8OcOctNovni77H4F
to sign EDM 158 and build up similar levels of support for this
parliamentary session.

Tell Tony to Ban Snares!
A new petition to ban snares has been set up on the Prime Minister's
E-Petitions website.

Snares - Early Day Motion 158

The League's campaign for the prohibition on snares was hugely
successful in the last Parliamentary session. League members like you
helped encourage 231 local MPs to sign a Parliamentary motion calling
for a ban on the sale, manufacture and use of all snares.

We want to reproduce that support in a new EDM this week.

The campaign now needs your help more than ever. A new Early Day
Motion on snares has been tabled. EDM 158 will help the League in its
campaign to see legislation prohibiting snares.

This is important now. EDMs only last one Parliamentary year and the
signatures from last year's EDM have now been deleted. Our campaign
therefore needs to be renewed in order to maintain pressure on the
Government and keep snaring at the forefront of debate in Parliament.

Takeaction:
Help the League campaign for the prohibition of snares. Urge your
local MP to sign Early Day Motion 158 by clicking here. Remember, we
want to build up similar levels of support to that we had in the last
session of Parliament, and we can only do that though you - our
supporters.

Please also pass this message on to your friends and urge them to
contact their MPs to ask them to sign EDM 158.

Investigation Launched into Dumped Carcasses at Beulah
Posted: 23 January 2007
http://league.org.uk/news_details.asp?NewsID=872

Carwyn Jones, the Welsh Minister for the Environment, Planning and the
Countryside has ordered an investigation into the dumping of vast
numbers of gamebird carcasses at Beulah in South Wales.

The move follows the tabling of questions by Welsh Assembly Member,
Peter Black, into the discovery by League investigators of thousands
of rotting carcasses and eggs in a pit at the Beulah Shoot, near
Llanwrtyd Wells in 2006.

Welsh Liberal Democrat Peter Black said,

“I welcome the ordering of an investigation by the Minister into the
dumping of so many gamebird carcasses in Beulah. It’s important this
matter is looked into in more detail and I’m glad the Minister is
taking it seriously”.

The investigation at Beulah by the League Against Cruel Sports
unearthed thousands of dead gamebirds and eggs in a six feet deep pit.
The pit was left open and used as a dumping ground throughout the
summer of 2006 raising health concerns from the Former Veterinary
Advisor to the Welsh Office, John Campbell. He said,

“These pits attract predators, such as foxes, rats, crows, hawks etc
which can lead to the spread of diseases. Decomposing carcasses are
also unfavourable environments for many viruses, and one is thinking
in terms of avian influenza”.
