"Don't attempt to teach a pig to sing.It wastes your time and irritates the
pig"
Frederick Noronha attributes the quote to Anthony de Mello SJ

Actually speaking the phrase is,
"Don't attempt to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the
pig"

It's an excerpt from a larger text by the famous writer Robert A. Heinlein
"A fool cannot be protected from his folly. If you attempt to do so, you
will not only arouse his animosity but also you will be attempting to
deprive him of whatever benefit he is capable of deriving from experience.
Never attempt to teach a pig to sing; it wastes your time and annoys the
pig."

I would like to know if it was Anthony or Frederick who misappropriated
credit for the phrase.

Cheers!

Cecil

> "Don't attempt to teach a pig to sing.

Just this afternoon I met a pig in Porvorim (near the Assembly) who can sing. However, prior to
singing, here is its demands:

1. The pig will sing in Konkani, but has not specified which script for the lyrics.
2. The pig would like to sing on a Casino in the River Sal. Good luck.
3. The pig will only sing to Goans or those domiciled in Goa for 10 years. For 1 crore it will
sing to anybody.
4. The pig would like a Cabinet rank in the govt. or failing that a direct bribe of 20 crores. If
20 crores is not possible, then 25 crores is fine (p.s. think like a pig).
5. The pig would like to fly out of a North Goa airport to entertain Goans in the Gulf. Pigs don't
want to use Dabolim since it is too crowded.
6. The pig would like Regional Plan 2011 amended to allow pigs ocean front property purely for
medical reasons (salty air/water is supposedly good for pigs). The pig would also like a pig SEZ,
some communidade land, and any private property it can confiscate from Goan expats since they are
away from Goa.
7. The pig refuses to get building permits to build on illegal land since it is a pig. Human law
does not apply to pigs.

Tomorrow's report will be on pigs who fly.

George

My apologies. I picked it from *Inspirational Quote*, September 2007,
page 36. Probably it was attributed in the original text or book where
it was published. I don't know if Tony de Mello intended to be
credited as the person who created the quote, but I am a fan
nonetheless of his short, pithy stories through which he makes
interesting points (even if the Vatican had problems with them). --FN

I can hardly wait. Maybe George should file a daily report on pigs of
all varieties.

I was once asked in an interview, "From where did P.G. Wodehouse get the
title 'Pigs Have Wings' for one of his novels?" I looked blank, and the
interviewer decided that I was bs-ing him when I said I was a PGW fan. I
didn't get the job.

Some research (these were the days before internet, which has made this
very easy, where do you think Cecil gets his instant wisdom and Heinlein
quotes from?) :-) led me to Carroll's "Walrus and the Carpenter" which
has a verse which goes:

"The time has come," the Walrus said,
"To talk of many things:
Of shoes -- and ships -- and sealing-wax --
Of cabbages -- and kings --
And why the sea is boiling hot --
And whether pigs have wings."

Dear FN,

I love Tony De Mello. When I was quite young, my
mother bought me both his books ("the short, pithy
stories), and they were so instrumental in shaping my
opinions about the redundance of religion. Ofcourse
Tony has no doubt about the existence of God, his
difference with doctrine is just that it is dogmatic
and redundant. I wonder if he has any new books out.
Ofcourse it's been a long time since I've read his
books and I've made the descent or ascent from theist
to agnostic, and so reading him now may not be the
same.

I am very glad that the Vatican have, unequivocally, reinstated

Ofcourse it's been a long time since I've read his
books and I've made the descent or ascent from theist
to agnostic, and so reading him now may not be the
same.

Cheers!

Tomorrow's report will be on pigs who fly.

quotes from?) :-) led me to Carroll's "Walrus and the Carpenter" which
has a verse which goes:

Ofcourse it's been a long time since I've read his
books and I've made the descent or ascent from theist
to agnostic, and so reading him now may not be the
same.

I, too, have always been his ardent fan & have enjoyed the
privilege of his personal accquaintanceship, albeit, a long time
ago.

I am very glad that the Vatican have, unequivocally, reinstated
the great thinker in toto.

But dear Selma, is the man still among us. I, most definitely, do
not believe so.

Alfred.

PS: The good Baron Hausman would have proudly backed your
proto-blueprint for a viable re-enaction of Panjim town.

Sadly Fr Tony DeMello expired over 10-15 years ago. He used to preach retreats at Lonavla and was in great demand. His 'Song of the Birds' book is one of the best books I have come across. Alfred, could you kindly inform me when the Vatican reinstated his teachings? I seem to have missed out on that.

Cheers!!!

Hi Alfred,
Good to hear from you on Goanet. What a privilege it
must have been to know Fr De Mello in person.

I'm told in private that Fr Tony died peacefully in
his sleep at Fordham University NY. Apparently there
are groups that meet regularly to discuss his work. I
wonder if this simple man ever knew the amount of
people he influenced with his short stories.

Marshall, that's the name of the book, "Song of the
birds", which I couldn't remember for some reason.
That one followed "Prayer of the Frog", which I loved.

I found him on Wikipedia, but does anyone know if we
can claim him as one of our own, a Goan that is. It
doesn't say so on Wikipedia.

Reena, you were told wrong :-) Below is Tony's brother speaking ...

Tony was born on the 4th of September 1931 in Santa Cruz, a suburb of
Bombay, India. Our parents, Frank and Louisa (nee Castelino), were
natives of Goa, a Portuguese colony on the south-west coast of India.
They belonged to a long line of Catholic families, going back 400
years, renowned for their religious fervour.

Hi Reena,

Someone (nice!) sent me a link. Tony was very much a
Goan Catholic. His father worked in the railways.
Those East Indians produce someone like Fr Tony,
Saibab bogosh, no way! :-)

take care,

Chood fast chollo naaka go.

East Indian have produced some interesting writers/poets....Placid
Edmonds (poet), Darryl D'Monte (editor/journalist/writer) to name a
few.....and whole slew of others..I'll have to juggle my memory.
Ashley D'Mello was known to write well...

Cheers.
