[SlimDevices: Beta] New in 7.9: "Don't Stop The Music"

'The demise of my SmartMix'
plugin revealed the fact that many users particularly liked it's Don't
Stop The Music feature. I therefore decided to implement a basic Don't
Stop The Music plugin in LMS 7.9: as soon as you approach the end of the
currently queued up music, it will try to add some matching music to
keep the party going.

Don't Stop The Music currently offers a selection of previously
available options, but in a different way. You've got the choice of
keeping the music playing using RandomPlay (optionally only using genres
of the current playlist), Spotify Recommendation mixes, Deezer Smart
Radio (with 'questionable success'
The plugin only provides the infrastructure to automatically trigger
some playlist addition etc. But it should be 'fairly simple for any
plugin author to provide more options'

What other options would you like to see?

You'll find the options in the player's settings (web UI or Squeezeplay
based UIs, iPeng etc.). You might need to restart the controller/player
to make them show up. But please give it a try.

Thanks Michael, I chose the Song Mix option and it worked fine :)

Pity my genre tags are in a mess, ah well, something to catch up on this
winter. :(

Nice, this will cover the loss of Smart Mix in my case. Most of the time
I used the don't stop the music function.
I will try it as soon as I update the Synology packages. Thx!

I just got round to trying this, with DSTM set to "Song Mix (limited to current genres)". What exactly is this meant to do?

I played a track (This Womans Work by Kate Bush) that had genre=Alternative Rock (I know, it's not really Alt Rock, but by genres are a bit messed up).
When it got close to the end, it removed the track and added 10 songs to play. All were songs by Tori Amos, Lana Del Ray or Heather Nova. It seems to have chosen random songs that have the same genre, but only selected from 3 albums - I have loads of others.

The music chosen was appropriate, but I guess this was lucky? When I played a single song from Blur, it also chose the same songs as described above. Not so random?

DSTM - whever I see that in posts, I think "Dark Side of The Moon". Doh!

The same as Random Mix / Song Mix with only the one genre selected.

Would there be more for that particular genre? Genres are your genre
strings, case sensitive etc. Would you have multiple genres in some of
the tracks?

Yes, plenty.

The vast majority, no.

I just tried again. Played a track by Blur, and it queued up 4xtracks by Lana Del Rey, 3x Tori Amos and 4x tracks by Heather Nova, the same as the other night.
I have 109 albums tagged with the genre "Alternative".

I have a feeling I am being quite stupid here, but exactly how do I get
DSTM to work?
I have a album loaded, then i go to DSTM,
I select Song Mix,
Now what ?
If I go to random play and select Song Mix, it uses genres already
selected in RP (as before) how do I get DSTM to create the playlist.
I am running on Raspberry Pi 2.

Cheers

Tony

For starters, clear your playlist and just play 1 track, halfway through
that track an icon named "Song Mix" will appear in the playlist and will
start playing after the original track ends.
If you have an album loaded it will add the "Song Mix" towards the end
of the album.

It should kick in when you play the second to last track. But whatever
you picked to be played back will be played before the new items play,
of course.

Michael,
Today I updated LMS to 1467729831 and in the log I saw that DSTM now
should support Musicbrainz fingerprints (?)
But it doesn't seem to do that, or maybe I've got things wrong... it
plays from Norah Jones to AC/DC to Secret Garden and then to Jethro Tull
and so on.... It seems completely random.
There is no option in the Player DSTM page to choose Musicbrainz...

Then I tried the option Spotify Recommendations (based on the current
playlist), but it too just produce a completely random playlist.

What am I doing wrong here?

Where'd you see the changelog for the updates? Which log is it in? I've
been curious as to what's updating on it nightly as well and haven't
been able to find it noted online anywhere.

When there's an update it gives a link bottom left of webgui. Clicking
this gives a list of recent changes.

No. DSTM really does nothing with your library. It only allows _other_
plugins to do their magic when a playlist comes to an end. Feel free to
post your log file so we can understand what's really going on.

Did you listen to that track? When there's only a single track, DSTM
would wait until it's played half way through, before adding new music.
This would eg. prevent addition of new tracks while you were still
building a play queue.

You're right, it adds the tracks later then I expected. But a good
feature!

So does the musicip plugin settings still influence the outcome of the
tracks?

Yes, they should. It's using the same mixer function as all other MIP
mixing options. That said I haven't used MIP for a while now. So... let

Maybe a feature request. I notice there are duplicate songs added in the

Are these the exact same tracks (eg. same file path) or the same track
from a different source? DSTM already does filter based on the file's
URL, but it wouldn't filter out same tracks with different URLs.

It uses the same file in many cases. One example is: 'When the beat
drops out' by 'Marlon Roudette'
But also noticed that: 'Sugar' by 'Maroon 5' is duplicate, but is from 2
different albums.

I added the m3u file for reference.

Too many, yes. Many? Not sure: 6 out of 164. But agreed, it shouldn't
happen.

Now every mixer behaves a little different. You're using MIP, aren't
you? What are your settings? How many tracks would it add in one go? It
would only check for repetition within a single batch of files added,
but not over several batches.

I'm adding 75 songs at once, so in that case I started with a musicip
mix of a compilation album and at the end it added about 75 songs in one
go.

My last update was last week I think, so I will update today and I will
check again.

Hmm... but that would mean that MIP did add those repeats within one
single mix. Would one of those repeated tracks have been part of the
seed playlist (the one used before DSTM kicked in), and the second be
added by MIP?

The MIP integration currently is really basic. It's only picking one
single track as a seed. I'll have to look whether the MIP plugin somehow
can use more than one seed track.

I've updated both DSTM and the MIP integration which now should result
in better mixes. It's now using five tracks rather than one as a seed,
and it should try harder to get rid of duplicates.

Hi Michael,

It seems to work perfectly now! Thank you!

I made 1 musicip mix, then skipped to the last track. Added 75 more and
no duplicates. Tried it one more time and still no duplicates. Amazing.
Thanks for making this software so great!

I noticed the playlist must be 6 tracks or more. 5 or less and DSTM
stops the playback once new tracks are added.

Are you running the latest of both LMS and the plugin? There was an
issue with LMS until a few days ago which could have caused stopping the
playback if a mix returned duplicates.

Please keep in mind that mixing local music is a bit hit and miss, as
Last.fm has no idea what music you're owning. It would return some
suggestions, but if you don't have them, then oh well... you'd end up
with no music added. What did you play? And would you think your
collection has similar music? If so, could you give some example?

Yes, that's most likely something polling with an invalid client ID.
This could be the web UI, trying to get information for a player which
has disappeared etc. Or some other client like domoticz.

Updated LMS and plugins this morning. DSTM always generates a playlist,
I guess my collection is big enough. Tried several different (popular)
tracks with the same effect. I'll experiment some more to see if I can
find tracks which don't show this effect.
Can I detect if DSTM is working as expected, how many tracks does it add
at maximum hit rate?

How old is your 7.9?
If recent, look on the "Home" page under "Extras".

After reading this thread I updated to the latest LMS to get this new
feature - which sounds great.

I can see it under "Extras".
I configured it for the player I am using "Song Mix (limited to current
genres)".
I played 2 "Reggae" tracks no other genre included in the genre tag.
But nothing happens.

Is this a stand-alone plug-in that should work on it's own?
Or does it work with (or require) one or more of the other plugins?

Thanks in advance.

Hey Michael,

thanks for for another great plugin! With MusicIP Mix as my source, my
playlist just grows and grows with hundreds of played songs left in the
list after a while. Is there a way to limit the played tracks so they
are removed automatically?

There currently is no preference to be set for this. It's using the
maxPlaylistLength value to decide whether stuff needs to be removed from
the playlist.

Switched to LastMix option. Getting much better mixes and it keeps the

If your running the Synology beta package, there is no need to
uninstall! Lmsupdate updates your current installation, just like any
other package update. (De-installation is only recommended when running
SSODS, and needed when running LmsRepack).
But of course, the choice is yours. ;-)

Spotify is only available on Radio and Touch (unless you install a 3rd
party Spotify plugin). The fact that you ask about it makes me wonder
whether you have Spotify subscription at all?

I downloaded this and used it at an afternoon garden party we had last

Which play option were you using? I haven't been able to get a good
success out of this. I have most of my library tagged pretty well too as
far as the genre. It goes all over the place with song mix(limited to
current genre). If I'm playing jazz the don't stop feature seems to add
every type of genre to the playlist, not just jazz. It'll be going from
Miles Davis to Slipknot to Norah Jones to Run DMC. haha

DSTM is working well for me. Very, very nice.

I have some "ideas".

How about exposing the DSTM options so they're a little more
convenient?

E.g. a "Don't Stop the Music" control button on the webUI next to the
repeat & shuffle buttons? Something that would cycle through "Disabled"
and all the other "Don't Stop" options?

Also, how about exposing such a control jive-like on a now playing
long-press so that iPeng, OrangeSqueeze, etc. can play too?

And eventual CLI control?

Finally, how feasible would it be to further restrict random album
play...not just by genre, but also by using some kind of rudimentary
SOUNDEX scoring on the album title? E.g. if I'm playing Beethoven
string quartets, DSTM would cue up more classical era string quartets,
rather than, say, symphonies or string trios.

I'll look into this.

The problem there is a long standing issue (IMHO): for the music
services we provide a context menu which is 100% mysb.com fed. And there
is no way to add anything to it from LMS. I don't know why we decided to
do this back in the days. But it prevents us to do what you're asking to
do. Adding it while playing local content only could be too confusing.

> And eventual CLI control?

Some already is available (the menu does require a CLI command). What
would you want to do?

That's the kind of "intelligence" which is not easy to implement. That
would be a major challenge. Out of the scope for LMS. It could certainly
be done in a plugin if someone felt like doing it anyway.

I've just tried the *Song Mix (limited to current genres)*. I listened
to a jazz album and it added a perfectly pure jazz playlist. Are you
sure that your library is tagged pretty well?

when you use the function "multiple genres" like me - it might get
tricky.
You start with a track that has genre "Jazz;Ambient" its "hard to tell"
what genre is picked for the next track.
bth i dont know whats the difference between -"DSTM"- and the old random
Mix.

DSTM only triggers whatever other source to add tracks. But it's still
Random Play which does the mix. So the behaviour should not have changed
in any way. The only problem could be if DSTM picked the "wrong" genre.
I have to double check whether I got that right and am dealing with the
multiple genres case.

Sorry about that, I'm not sure what happened. I thought i had it set to
limited to current genres.. Apparently it wasn't so it was just random
songs.. haha.. Thanks for the heads up.. It works great now that I
selected the right one.

I have it set to Song Mix (limited to current genres). My collection is
almost exclusively FLAC full CD images with associated cuesheets. I use
delimited multi-genre tagging, so (for instance) Diana Krall is tagged
REM GENRE "Jazz;Jazz-Vocal;Jazz-Vocal, Women". (The category "Jazz" is
left over from when I started tagging. It's still there even though I've
concluded that it covers too much ground to be useful.) Not sure if
Don't Stop The Music is somehow taking this into account. It didn't seem
to go into the crazy end of my jazz collection, but it also didn't seem
to stick only to music that matched all tags for the original playlist,
which was relatively mellow vocal jazz. It certainly didn't dredge up
Motorhead or Underworld or Tafelmusik or the Tallis Scholars. (My
collection goes all over the place ;).)

Do you have RandomPlay, Spotify or Deezer plugins installed and enabled?

Hi Michael,

currently only Spotify or Deezer can be selected as the source for the
do not stop play music mix. Would it be possible to select both and a
mixed playlist is created from both sources?

Also it would be great to start a mix from the song which is currently
played. If this can be done via the context menu from iPeng,it would be
perfect.

Additionaly it is IMHO not very comfortable to activate the do not stop
feature for every player. A possebility to configure and change the
settings globaly would be very nice :).

Cheers and thanks again for your great work,

Sounds like a great idea for a 3rd party plugin :-). The current
implementation really tries to provide the infrastructure for plugins to
hook in to. Plus I've added the easiest choices for a few services.

The feature you suggest would require a lot more code and logic than the
current implementation (eg. de-duplication). And as I doubt many users
are using both services in parallel, this doesn't sound like a feature
which needs to be in the server core.

Similarly to the feature I had in SmartMix? Might be possible under
certain circumstances. But as I've mentioned before I can't hook in to
music service context menu. Therefore this feature would be rather limited.

No. That's how SmartMix started. And everybody wanted to have per-client
configurability. Because I want my kids' Radio go silent after a while,
but not mine ;-). And dealing with both global and per-player settings
is just too much hassle for my taste. I don't know how many players you
have. But even configuring it on a dozen player doesn't take long.

What if you restarted your devices?

You certainly didn't. I can't remember when I did this the last time.
And I'm switching between branches (7.7-7.9 and others) all the time.
Wiping an install never is necessary.

My server refused to load the OS after a reboot - so the only solution
was to reimage and restart.

Not sure if this has been noticed or is expected behaviour

In DSTM, choosing a named Playlist saved as a favourite to play after
the last track finishes (My Funny Valentine), the playlist plays ok, but
doesn't load in the list on the right-hand side, in the webui or Android
app. No artwork or track information on the "Now playing" screen on the
Android app.

Hmm... that's odd. I've seen similar oddities with favorite artists or
albums and added some workaround for them. Maybe I need to make the
workaround the new standard.

When I chose the random mix, I can include or exclude genres. I usually
exclude Genres like "Audio Books". What about excluding Genres in DSTM?
Sometomes I might use the "song mix" but don't want to have any Audio
Books in my mix.

There seems to be an issue with the "song mix (limited to current
genres)". When I chose that, it changes my genre selections under
"Random Mix". Is there a way to avoid that and keep the genre selection
just like it was before the song mix?

That's a side effect of the RandomPlay plugin. I never fully understood
the issue. But for whatever reason we decided at some point not to
restore playlists generated by this plugin.

If you use the "limited to current genres" option, then you should be safe.

Consider this broken by design: the Random Mix plugin only keeps one
list of genres, which then is applied to all mixes it does. There
currently is no "genres per mix session" feature. It's something I
wanted to change for a while already, but I haven't gotten around to do
this.
