Hello!

If you are interested by an up-to-date, interactive and ever-growing
list of big cats sites, here is a nice site for you :
http://bigcatslinks.ath.cx

You can sublmit sites to the list, or comment/vote for the sites
already there, plus search, list sort and more! :)

Please tell me what you think about it! Thanks!

I hope you don't mind the advertisement, at least it's not off-topic
:)
I just made that site as a personal participation to the conservation
of the big cats, my favorite animals. There are lots of great web
sites out there, but some are not that much known, or also there are
some lists with links, but most of them are down...

Enjoy,

Tambako

How about if the new links go on top of the list for some time? Or maybe the
ability to change the sorting order? Oh, and add category 'webcams' ;)

Thanks for the reply and the suggestions!
- For the sorting order, just click on the orange title of a column
(windows explorer-style)
- For the new links, I might see what I can do, but what is also
available is that "View New Links Since Last Visit" button. It's
cookie based.
- For the webcam category, why not, but first I wait to have more than
one site! ;)

Well, it's quite not that intuitive. Add an arrow that would show the order.

What if you came there for the first time? No doubt most of the people will
know 5tigers, and they will rate it high. Unless they browse the rest...
First of all I suggeest you putting some "NEW" label on new links, for
example those that were added less than a week or two ago.

That's right. In fact the arrow shows after the first click only, like
you might have seen. I should place the arrow already on the start.

Then the list will be empty :p

Yes, this is quite a good idea, will try it this evening, I should
have the time. So have a look then and you can tell me what you think
on that news thread!
I'm also working on polls on the first page :)

Well, I got a look and could spot a golden tiger moving on a platform,
quite nice. But I should take more time. By the way, golden tigers are
very nice animals. There is a zoo in Switzerland where I often go,
which has 10 tigers, 4 of them are white and 3 are golden...

Thanks for submitting the site anyway! I wish people would use this
feature more often...

Now it is almost fine :) Just a little thing: when you click on date, you
expect the newest sites to be on top. The order is somehow reversed...
To get even more of that sorting, how about URLs as criteria? ;) Or maybe
some material of your own?

I wish we had such one here... I'm so short on time right now I can't go to
the zoo, but as far as I know they don't have any special color variation.
Goldens are even rarer than white tigers! Unfortunately, as they are also an
outcome of inbreeding of cats with recessive gene, they aren't authorized to
be bred for SSP. In fact the advices on whites and goldens are not to breed
them at all ! That would be a great shame...

I have another site to add on tigers and other animals as well. It is just
starting, but will be growing over time. Check out www.species.cc

I did the following : by default, the list is sorted by date now, most
recent on the top.

Sort the list by URL ? I don't think it would be of any utility ;)

some material of your own?
What for example?

Well, I try to go to the zoo often, and I always take my digital
camera with me, hoping to get a few good shots ;)
I should go to the zoo of zurich and take picture of snow leopads in
the snow ;)
Now there is LOTS of snow in the region!

There is about 30 specimens in the world as far as I know...

I know about such issues. Many white ones have eyes convergence. I
don't remember the right name for it, but i guess you see what I mean.
Sad... I mean I don't really have an advice for that issue...

Yep, I saw it, I have to accept it...

Looks like that people are starting to vote to that poll now :) I had
the idea to program it on monday. It was fun to program it!

None has any. That's nature trait... Genetic defects. Or maybe you mean the
breeding advices? Well, as long as people find golden tabbies and white
tigers as an interesting and undoubtedly most beautiful variations of
already awesome tigers, they will breed them. I wish the sanctuaries to keep
at least few of them... I have to find one and see for myself!

Well, I mean the general thing. People want white and golden tabby
tigers, but they seldom care about inbreeding issues, they don't try
to vary the gene pool by taking genetically distant individuals for
breeding...

I guess that is not possible at this point... It would be fine if there were
more wild whites giving genes for breeding. But there aren't... While still
considering the real purpose of breeding white tigers, somehow we have more
than one living. Only those inbreeding issues... Now it is more important
what life do we provide them, cos even an ill tiger is still a living
creature. But don't breed them only for entertainment ! (read about John
Weinhart's case at http://www.savethetigers.com/ - the trial is kept
postponed on and on... Guess the best solution would be life sentence or
death penalty for him!)

On the gene diversity case, that might be possible to find a tiger not
related to Mohan or other captive whites living, but still carrying a white
color gene. Guess nobody wants to do a research for it, as you stated
above... Well, we can speculate what can be done, but we aren't genetic
scientists ;) I think the need is for another wild white tiger. Yet that
will be against our efforts to save them...
